Liga slates pre-season games

_________________________________________________
WITH just more than a week before tip-off, Liga Pilipinas is set to begin regional basketball action with a pair of pre-season tournaments this weekend.

Southern teams composed of Bacolod, Iloilo, Misamis Oriental, Ozamiz, Pagadian, Zamboanga, Davao and host Cebu open up hostilities starting tomorrow at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Northern teams composed of Baguio, Ilocos, Pampanga, Laguna, Quezon and host Taguig begin their own pre-season event at the Taguig Sports Center starting on Sunday.

Both tournaments, sponsored by ML Kwarta Padala, will be for four days, with the teams in each division to be grouped into two. They play a single-round robin elimination, with the top two teams meeting in the championship on the final day.

The pre-season tournaments will be the first official activity of the newly-created regional basketball league.

Liga basketball operations chief Butch Antonio described the pre-season games as a "dry run" for the maiden season of Liga Pilipinas.

"Not only are the teams given the opportunity to gauge their level of preparedness for our inaugural season, the pre-season competition also gives Liga a chance to test our officials, referees and operating systems," Antonio said.

Double headers will be held every day, starting with the Zamboanga vs. Misamis-Oriental and Cebu vs. Iloilo games in Cebu on Saturday. Ilocos opens up against Quezon and Baguio goes up against Taguig in Taguig on Sunday.

Liga will strictly enforce FIBA rules and will tap a pool of 46 referees selected after a nationwide tryout conducted by Liga technical head Perry Martinez.

"Liga is glad to be providing so many young players and budding referees this chance to be part of a truly competitive league to hone their skills for long term growth," Martinez said.

Liga Pilipinas hostilities unwrap this weekend

The Southern teams composed of Bacolod, Iloilo, Misamis Oriental, Ozamiz, Pagadian, Zamboanga, Davao and host Cebu open up hostilities starting Saturday, May 24 at the Cebu Coliseum.

On the other side, the Northern teams composed of Baguio, Ilocos, Pampanga, Laguna, Quezon and host Taguig begin their own pre-season event at the Taguig Sports Center starting on Sunday, May 25.

Both tournaments, sponsored by ML Kwarta Padala, will be a short 4 day championship where the teams of each division will be grouped into two. They play a single round robin elimination phase after which the top two teams will meet in the championship on the final day of the tourneys. The pre-season tournaments will be the first official activity of the newly created regional basketball league.

Liga basketball operations chief Butch Antonio described the pre-season games as a "dry run" for the upcoming maiden season of Liga Pilipinas. Double headers will be scheduled every playing day of the pre-season tournaments starting with the Zamboanga vs Misamis-Oriental and Cebu vs Iloilo games in Cebu on Saturday, while Ilocos opens up against Quezon and Baguio goes up against Taguig in Taguig on Sunday.

"Liga is glad to be providing so many young players and budding referees this chance to be part of a truly competitive league to hone their skills for long term growth," Martinez said.

The fledgling community based league is set to launch its maiden season on May 31 in Cebu and begin its first two legs on June 11.

Liga Pilipinas debuts in Taguig

A preview of what form "pride and passion basketball" will take unfolds today at the C.P. Tinga gym in Taguig with the staging of the pre-season games leading up to the inaugural launching of Liga Pilipinas.

Six provinces divided into two groups make up the north division of the presseason tourney, with Ilocos, Quezon and Laguna bracketed in Group I and Baguio, Taguig and Pampanga in Group II.

The pre-season southern swing in Cebu was ongoing at press time.

Ilocos and Laguna break the ice with their 4 p.m. game, followed by the 6 p.m. encounter between Baguio and host Taguig.

"Liga Pilipinas is excited to begin the pre-season games in Cebu and Taguig as this event is part of the small strides we have taken to realize the vision of taking regional basketball to the next level," said Liga Pilipinas CEO and president Noli Eala.

"As we continue to work on perfecting our system tournaments, we invite everyone to a sneak peak of what pride and passion basketball is all about."

Under the same time slots, Laguna faces Ilocos and Pampanga battles Baguio on May 26, while Quezon meets Laguna and Taguig clashes with Pampanga on May 27.

The second-ranked teams from the two groups meet for third place at 4 p.m. on May 28, while the No. 1ranked teams square off in the final at 6 p.m.

Dondon Tadena had 18 points and Ramil Tagupa 17 to power the Misamis Oriental Meteors to a rousing 103-84 victory over the Pagadian Explorers Saturday, kicking off the Liga Pilipinas pre-season tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Six-foot-seven center Jojo Omandan had 22 points for Pagadian but failed to get vital support from the rest of the Explorers, who appeared to get lost after the furious first quarter.

The Cebu Niños, on the other hand, crushed the Iloilo Warriors, 124-94, posting a 49-point lead, 113-64, with eight minutes left on a 3-pointer by ex-pro Danny Aying.

Ronald Capati led seven other Niños who scored in double figures with 19 while Tex Pelopero, who nailed six triples, led the Warriors with 20 points.

Meanwhile, the northern games pitting Ilocos against Quezon, and Baguio versus Taguig at the C.P. Tinga gym in Taguig were also ongoing at press time.

Pagadian was within 21-20 at the end of the first quarter. But Misamis Oriental outscored the Explorers, 26-15, in the second period behind Ramil Tagupa, Franklin Nailon and Alano Caputolan to break the game open.

* * *The Meteors were well in control for majority of the game until veteran Ronald Saracho single-handedly carried the Amores back into contention by unloading 12 markers in the fourth quarter.* The Amores flubbed a chance to tie the game when Peter Naron split his free throws at the nine-second mark, 77-78.* Naron then fouled Ronnie Zagala who made his first but missed his second free throw to pad the Meteors’ edge, 79-77.* Edter Chua grabbed the defensive rebound and fired an outlet pass to a streaking Junnie Navarro, who was then stopped by a wall of Meteor defenders at the buzzer.

Bryan Faundo quickly fouled Yee, who could only make one free throw, 78-75, and a good 11 seconds remaining.* The Explorers did not place any rebounders on the key so possession quickly went to Meteors but Ronnie Zagala mishandled the ball to seal their fate.

Another trophy for M. Lhuillier & Yayoy.....what else is new? From the looks of it, Cebu is almost a lock for at least a championship berth in the Liga. I just hope the other teams become more competitive so that the league will be attractive. Ozamis has always been a tough opponent for M.Lhuillier/Cebu in the south, but they didn't play inthe pre-season tournament. Negros didn't participate but they're not known to have strong teams in the past (in the MVBA, NBC).

CEBU CITY — The M. Lhuillier-backed Cebu Ninos edged the Pagadian Explorers, 88-74, to bag the ML Kwarta Padala Liga Pilipinas preseason tournament championship Tuesday at the New Cebu Coliseum .

The Ninos of multi-titled coach Raul Alcoseba banked on a blistering 16-0 run to finish the first half, 51-36, behind the forays of Richard Ian Saladaga and Ronald Capati.

The Explorers, however, threatened briefly in the third quarter, 57-61.

But veteran Danny Aying cooled the Explorers’ rally with a triple and Jayford Rodriguez added six points to push the Ninos comfortably ahead after three quarters, 72-61.

Saladaga then sank a triple followed by a Marlon Basco basket to deliver the knockout blow entering the final two minutes, 87-69.

The Explorers never recovered from there.

The victory thus gave the Ninos their first championship trophy of the Philippines’ newest community-based league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

The Batang Global leaned on the 23 points of Marvin Ortiguerra to seal the win for the wards of Coach Jude Roque.* Key baskets in the fourth period* by Ortiguerra and Noy Javier signalled Taguig's pivotal breakaway.

The visiting Victory of Coach D'jalma Arnedo gave the hosts a tough time as RB Mangahas set the tone early with 10 points in the opening period.* However, the Victory failed to sustain their attack in the second half.

Cebu Niños win Liga Mindanao pre-season games

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños streaked past Montana Pawnshop of Davao, 91-85, to rule the Mindanao pre-season games of the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Second Conference the other night in Bangangga, Davao del Norte.

The Niños of team owner Michel J. Lhuillier and decorated coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba , who swept all four legs en route to claiming the First Conference title of Liga last month, barged into the final after escaping past the gritty Misamis Oriental (MisOr) Metros of Gov. Oscar Moreno, 77-72.

The Niños actually finished as second seed at the end of the classification round with a 2-1 win-loss record. They beat MisOr via a 67-66 cliffhanger and Lipa-Batangas Barakos, 92-72, but bowed to Montana Pawnshop, 78-82.

The Niños will host the Visayas swing of the Liga pre-season games on November 13 to 16 at the Cebu Coliseum. Aside from Lipa and MisOr, also joining in are Taguig-Batang Global and Smart-Pampanga Buddies.

Cebu Niños top pre-season event

THE M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños continued their dominance as they scored another championship finish in the 2008 Liga Pilipinas Mindanao Pre-Season game in Davao Oriental last Sunday.

The Niños defeated the Montaña Pawnshop-Davao, 91-85, in the knockout championships for their first championship title after winning the First Conference title last September.

The Niños finished No.2 in the three-day elimination round of the four-team field that also included Lipa-Batangas Barakos and Misamis Oriental Meteors.

The Niños escaped with a 67-66 win over the Meteors last Wednesday. They suffered a humbling 78-82 loss from the hands of Montaña-Davao before pulling ahead 92-72 in their final elimination round game last Friday to settle for the second place after the classification round.

Cebu again dominated the Meteors, 77-72, in the semifinals to forge a championship showdown with the Davao squad. (RCM)

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

By Marian C. Baring

THE Liga Pilipinas Conference 4 pre-season tournament will kick off on Feb. 15-18 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Two-time Liga Pilipinas champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños will host the Trace-Laguna Stallions, the Taguig Batang Global and the GenSan-MP Warriors in the tournament.

The Niños made history last conference when they won 21 straight games on their way to claim the Conference 3 title.

The pre-season tournament will also give Cebuano fans a chance to catch the newest members of the team--Nat Cruz and Hafer Mondragon.

Meanwhile, as part of the Niños’ preparation for the upcoming Liga Pilipinas, they will host the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas on Feb. 26 and 27 at the Cebu Coliseum.

This will be the second time the coach Rajko Toroman-mentored squad will face the Niños.

THE REINGING Liga Pilipinas national champions M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños are bracing themselves for yet another run of perfection when they host a preseason tournament against three other Liga teams next week before capping it off with a couple of games against the Smart Gilas RP team later this month.

Coming to Cebu to test the mettle of M. Lhuillier are the Trace-Laguna Stallions, the Taguig-Batang Global and the GenSan-MP Warriors of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao. The mini-tournament kicks off on Feb. 15 and will last until the 18th.

The Niños of famed head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba are raring for some action after coming away with the championship in the third conference of the Liga Pilipinas last year, winning 21 straight games in the process. Doing it for another straight year remains a daunting task for the Ninos but Alcoseba said that they are more than up to the challenge.

“We have to see. You never know with the Liga since the league is so balanced. But we have been practicing for weeks already so we'll use this preseason tournament to see where we stand,” said Alcoseba in an interview yesterday.

Capping off their busy month will be two games against the formidable Smart Gilas RP Team on Feb. 26 and 27 at the Cebu Coliseum. Correspondent Jonas Panerio

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños kept their undefeated run going but had to sweat it out a little against a tough Trace-Laguna Stallions, 68-61, in the preseason tournament of the Liga Pilipinas yesterday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Niños, who went amok in the third conference of the Liga Pilipinas last year by winning 21 games in a row on their way to the championship, were pushed to the brink by the Liga third placers and had to turn to crucial baskets by point guard Mark Ababon and center Marlon Basco to eke out the win.

M. Lhuillier led by 10, 54-44, at the onset of the fourth but complacency along with Laguna's red-hot shooting gave the driver's seat to the Stallions, 55-54, after a 11-0 run spearheaded by baskets by Glenn Bolocon, Marlon Legaspi, Ricky Ricafuente and Jay-R Estrada.

The Niños got a reprieve and led, 61-57, after a three-pointer by Basco and an inside shot by Abby Santos, but the Stallions got to within two after a fastbreak lay-in by Bolocon.

It was then when Ababon broke free for a lay-up along the baseline that pushed the lead up to four once again.

Ricafuente's shot on the other end was then matched by Basco's undergoal stab that came off a nice assist by Bruce Dacia with 23.1 ticks left in the game. Ababon and Dacia then sealed the win with free-throws.

The Niños of team owner Michael J. Lhuillier and decorated coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba last night completed a three-game elimination round sweep with an easy 88-73 disposition of the GenSan Pacman Warriors of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

The Niños, who topped the Liga Conference 3 unbeaten in 21 games, raced to a blistering 18-4 start and the best Warriors could muster was to pull within six points, 16-22, on back-to-back triples by Apol Coronado and Christian Nicdao.

Bruce Dacia hit a buzzer-beating triple to close the first period and later Eliud Poligrates, a collegiate standout from the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, drain three successive 3-pointers in a 19-6 splurge that put the Niños comfortably ahead by 19 points, 41-22, with still three minutes left before halftime.

It was an all-M. Lhuillier show from there onwards and the Niños built their biggest lead at 28 points, 65-37, with 5:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Niños pound Warriors for third win
Wednesday, February 17, 2010

By Rommel C. Manlosa

THERE is no stopping the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños as they picked their third straight win, 88-73, over the MP-General Santos City Warriors for the first finals slot in the 2010 Liga Pilipinas Conference 4 Pre-Season tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

Today, the Niños will gun for their first trophy for 2010 as they play for the title today.

The Niños will likely face the Trace-Laguna Stallions, who were shooting for its second win against the Ave Maria Sanctuary Park at press time.

The Stallions, who also defeated the Warriors, 77-70, last Tuesday evening, were headed for the win as they built a 51-26 lead at half time.

Eluid Poligrates wowed the crowd as his basketball antics and fancy moves earned him 12 points to lead all Niños.

The Niños started the game on a high note, building a 25-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Jonathan Parreño tried to rally the Warriors in the final quarter but the 27 points that GenSan had in the fourth period was not enough to get past the resilient Niños.

Aside from Poligrates, Mark Abaon had 11 points and Stephen Padilla scored 10 for MLKP, while Parreno was the lone Warrior who scored in double digit with a game-high 17 points.

The championship match will be at 7 p.m. while the game for third place will be at 5 p.m.

Games today (Cebu Coliseum)

5 pm – Ave Maria vs GenSan-Pacman (for third)

7 pm – M. Lhuillier vs Trace-Laguna (for championship)

IT was yet another day at the office for the reigning Liga Pilipinas national champions M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos, who demolished the GenSan-Pacman Warriors, 88-73, at the end of the elimination round of the Liga preseason tournament, yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Niños will now be gunning for another title when they go up against the Trace-Laguna Stallions today in the championship game. Though they beat the Stallions, 69-61, in their earlier meeting, Trace-Laguna gave them plenty of trouble all game long.

Yesterday's match against the Warriors however, was reminiscent of the rout that the Ninos had against Ave Maria, as they led by as much as 28 points and were in full control from the opening tip to the final buzzer. The win continued the Ninos’ incredible winning streak dating back to the third conference of the Liga Pilipinas.

Eliud Poligrates, a star of the Southwestern University Cobras before getting banned from the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) late last year, topped the Ninos with 12 points, in his best scoring game since joining M. Lhuillier. Mark Ababon, the team's starting point guard, added 11 markers.

M. Lhuillier dominates again
By Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (The Freeman) Updated February 19, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - Although it was only a tune-up tournament of sorts, defending National champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala displayed a superb performance to win the Liga Pilipinas Conference-IV pre-season competition at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

MLKP of coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba sealed the four-day action with an 83-63 victory over the Laguna Trace Stallions.

Aside from winning the pre-season title, the Cebu Niños kept its record unblemished. The Niño’s have a streak of 25 games now.

Unlike its second and third games in the elimination round, when coach Alcoseba was not there the entire time due his other obligations at Cebu City Hall being a councilor, this time, he was there for his wards right from the start down to the final buzzer making sure the players from Laguna won’t steal the show away from them.

As a result, the Niños had no time to relax and went hard all throughout the game to the delight of their loyal supporters.

Wasting no time, the Niños grabbed every chance possible to score, posting an eight point lead at the end of the first quarter, 21-13 with Abby Santos, Marlon Basco and Bruce Dacia leading the team.

The Niño’s doubled their lead to 16 at the half, 45-29.

Alain Musni and former MLKP dribbler Ron Capati tried to rescue Laguna, but the suffocating defense of the Niños was too much to handle that it was only when the likes of Frank Nailon, Mark Magsumbol, Ariel Mepaña, and Woodrow Enriquez left the court that the Laguna got the chance to score anew.

From as much as 26 points, coach Nomar Isla’s team was able to cut the lead to only 17 points, but there wasn’t much time left for the visitors.

Earlier, the Pacman Warriors of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao left with the third place honors after beating guest team Ave Maria Sanctuary with an 86-72 win.

Ave Maria of coach Edito Salacut fought hard to make its guest appearance in the Liga Pilipinas more memorable, but could only do as much as leading the first half at 38-37.

Realizing that Ave Maria is out to spoil their day, the Warriors worked harder, grabbed the lead and never looked back to claim the win.

The scores:

Battle for third:

PACMAN(86) – Gonzaga 14, Mendoza 14, Sagad 12, Daja 10, Callo 9, Parreno 4, Coronado 3

THE M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños showed glimpses of the things they can do this season as they humbled the Trace Laguna Stallions, 83-63, to win the pre-season tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

Armed with brand-new shooting prowess, the Niños started a 9-2 blitz and never looked back despite the tremendous efforts of the Stallions to put up a good show.

“We emphasized shooting, especially by our big men, in our practices. We gave them a lot of shooting drills with emphasis on Abby Santos and Nat Cruz, and tonight they showed it and I think we are ready for the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas team next week,” said Niños coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba after the game.

While the Niños played the game with much gusto, it was the Stallions who were surprised by the quickness and agility of the Cebuanos.

“Our big men were agile, that’s why we can switch most of the time. Still we are about 75 to 80 percent ready for the Liga Pilipinas Conference 4 opening,” said Alcoseba.

With the fourth conference of the community-based regional basketball set to open in April yet, the Niños need to be in tip top shape, so they will play a series of
matches next week against Smart Gilas on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27.

The quickness and tenacity of the Niños completely overwhelmed the Stallions. However, unlike the previous years, the fans stayed until the final buzzer to see what more the Cebu squad can do against a limping opponent.

Santos scored the game high 14 points, Richard Ian Saladaga contributed 12 and Bruce Dacia had 11 for Cebu.

In contrast, no player from Laguna scored in double digits.

The Niños dictated the game from the start and never looked back en route to the title.

Cage teams brace for war
Wednesday, March 10, 2010

THIS doesn't look like an excursion for the visiting teams of Liga Pilipinas. This looms like a war.

"Every team vowed to go all out to win this one, the teams committed to play all out," said Bong Go, executive assistant to the Mayor and head of the sports committee of this year's Araw ng Dabaw festivities.

All four squads--Cebu's M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala, Gen. Santos City's MP Pacman, Laguna's Team Bida and hometeam Montana Pawnshop--bring to town their formidable line-ups and impressive records. These teams dispute the Mayor Rody-Inday Sara 73rd Araw ng Dabaw Invitational basketball tournament which gets going this Sunday at the Almendras Gym.

Although the teams' final line-ups will not be known until Saturday when they check in on the eve of the tournament, it looks like the cast is all square at this point. Montana Pawnshop for sure will enjoy the hometown edge and a big crowd rooting for them, but even that is no assurance that the local franchise has the tactical edge.

Manny Pacquiao's MP Pacman will be hoping to ride the crest of their chief backer’s glory most especially if the Filipino world pound-for-pound champ wins his fight also this Sunday against Joshua Clottey. That should rub intensity to the team whose pride will be put to a severe test.

The Cebuanos, as usual, are expected to flaunt their physical game which has been their trademark. Coach Yayoy Alcoseba’s charges could well enjoy the advantage in experience having been consistently taking part in various tournaments in and out of Cebu.

But focus will be on Team Bida. The Laguna-based franchise may yet fly in with an intriguing line-up formed out of a vast pool of basketball talent in Luzon.

Even then, no team enjoys a distinct advantage over the other and this should make the tournament more exciting. Gamedates will be from March 14 to 17 and will be free to the public courtesy of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte.

The tournament is organized by the CMO-Sports Development Division and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP)-Region XI. (NJB)

Saturday, March 13, 2010

By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

MONTAÑA Pawnshop Davao and MP Pacman of General Santos will try to shove off stiff opposition to win the title as the Mayor Rody and Inday Sara 73rd Araw ng Dabaw Invitational Basketball Tournament unfolds at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Almendras Gym.

Montaña beats Kwarta Padala
Monday, March 15, 2010

By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

MONTAÑA Pawnshop Davao and Team Bida Laguna turned back separate rivals in the opener of the Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte Invitational Basketball Tournament before a full-house crowd at the newly-refurbished Almendras Gym on Sunday night.

The Montaña Jewels, fresh from winning the Kaamulan Festival title in Bukidnon, edged visiting M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala (MLKP) of Cebu City, 91-87, while Team Bid Laguna tamed Manny Pacquiao (MP) Pacman Gensan Warriors, 87-77.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte opened the tournament with Davao City Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta and Purefoods assistant coach Ronnie Magsanoc.

The mayor also used the occasion to award cash incentives to Davao City athletes who bagged medals in the Laos Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. The parents and siblings of the Manila-based medalists received the awards.

MLKP raced to a 27-18 lead at the 8:57 mark of the second quarter but struggled to keep momentum as the Jewels of coach of Nick Serafica rallied to snatch a 41-40 lead at halftime.

Mighty six-foot-nine Fred Canlas went on a shooting spree, scoring 10 points, six of them coming off on one-one-one plays, in the early third period as teammates Michael Maniego, Donald Tadena and Ronald Lamocha helped in the offense department.

MLKP, however, hanged on as Bruce Dacia, Abe Santos, Ian Saladaga and Mark Magsumbol combined efforts to force a deadlock at 66-66 at the end of the third quarter.

The Jewels then tightened their defense to break away, 82-78, barely 2:16 left in the final period with the heroics of Paul Guerrero, who opened with a three-pointer, Maniego, Tadena and Lamocha.

Lamocha finished with 17 points while Maniego and Tadena added 16 and 15, respectively for the Jewels.
