one of the main players of the Pirates is POL SANTIAGO, formerly from Univ. of Manila.

2-way guard, around 5-10, money from 3pt area, very physical defender and is tough as nails. IIRC, played very well in their lone game in the last CCL. Needs to have more exposure to get into the PBL.

Kung masasama sila sa NCAA siguro hindi agad agad at ang daming nagaapply na schools but they are still being studied by the league.

Maiba naman, Lyceum also has a great womens basketball team champion na ilang beses sa WNCAA. Sila Matchiko Matsuno at April Lualhati ang key players doon.

Lyceum University survived a late game surge by Mike Cabangon to edge STI College 88-86 in the first day of the Metro Manila wild card of the PCCL. STI displayed awesome shooting and crisp ball movement to go up by as much as 14 points midway through the third period and looked headed to a smooth win. Cabangon however came alive in the fourth quarter as he strung up eight points in the last two and a half minutes. He nearly sent the game into overtime as he got his third steal in the last minute with still three seconds to go. He fumbled the ball however and time ran out on STI.

Lyceum got quite a break when the table officials failed to sound the buzzer on an expired shotclock with time down to around two minutes. STI coach Vic Icasiano was livid as was the rest of his coaching staff. Lyceum put in a shot when the clock had clearly run out and the referee counted the shot. It was then 84-80 and STI was mounting that furious rally behind Cabangon.

BEAUTY OVER MUSCLE

Ever Bilena-UST gave themselves enough of a cushion to survive a furious rally in the payoff fourth period to beat Muscle Tape-Lyceum 66-62 at the new Ynares Sports Center last night.

In a game where the Amazons never led, the Gandang Pinay were up by as much as 22 big points midway through the pivotal third period.

Marichu Bacaro, the reigning UAAP most valuable player, ran the Gandang Pinay offense with aplomb and was a first class pest on the defensive end. The 5-foot-2 pointguard played the passing angles excellently and disrupted a lot of outlet passes and entry passes to negate the advantage of the Amazons in the post. She got Ever Bilena off to a hot start at 14-4 in the opening period and the Gandang Pinay never looked back.

Recruit Aiyumi Ono, reportedly a Filipina-Japanese now undertaking residency at Santo Tomas, was a revelation with her ability to handle the ball, distribute, rebound and slash. Ono, a 5-foot-4 swingman, was nearly unstoppable on the high pick and roll and on the drive and draw, finding post players Anne Gregorio and Paula Bombeo with ease along the baseline.

April Lualhati, the brawny national team forward of Lyceum, insisted on handling the ball during the critical stages of a Lyceum rally and subsequently wound up with 11 turnovers. Most of those came when she rushed passes and tried to drive in against the Ever Bilena match-up zone instead of giving up the ball to her guards.

With nothing working for the Amazons, the Gandang Pinay poured it on behind Bacaro, Ono, forward Ramia Buenacosa and swingmen Nikki Leonardo and Elaine Orillana. With Gregorio and Bombeo controlling the boards, Leonardo and Orillana helping with the ball distribution and movement, Bacaro, Buenacosa and Ono had a field day on the firing end. It got so bad that Arlene Gesalan, the tough girl guard of Lyceum, was already roughhousing Bacaro and got warned by the referees. Bacaro however kept her cool and continued to keep the Gandang Pinay in the lead by being a one-woman press break.

Pointguard France Cabinbin, the hero of Lyceum's recent WNCAA title romp, and former Lady Pirates star forward Liegel Ortencio instigated a searing fourth period rally that brought Muscle Tape within 65-61. Lualhati muffed a three-point try at this juncture but was blunted. Lualhati was incredulous that no foul was called when she hit the floor on that attempt. Ortencio then split a pair of charities and Ever Bilena was able to use up the clock all the way to the final buzzer with serendipitous offensive rebounding in the last 30 seconds.

Bacaro led all scorers with 21 points while Ono had 18 markers to go with 10 rebounds.

Cabinbin and Ortencio had 14 points each for Muscle Tape; Ortencio had a near double-double pulling down nine rebounds. Lualhati had 12 markers and nine boards herself.

This marked the second straight game that Muscle Tape allowed itself to get down big in the third period and come up short in the end-game. Ironically they dropped an identical 66-62 decision to Smart-UP over the weekend in their own home court.

Machiko Matsuno, the beautiful Filipina-Japanese center, made a return to her Lyceum home but was clearly not in game shape - she was short on all four of her freethrow attempts and looked easily winded.

Joescoundrel
11-21-2008, 06:00 PM
April Lualhati seems to have too much leeway in playing as she pleases. She may be a talented player but she has to accept her limitations: for all her talent and skill she is nowhere near as good a handler and passer as her guards Arlene Gesalan and France Cabinbin. She should attack like a forward but be patient enough and trust her guards to get her the ball. She should not force the action and do too much. In this loss against Ever Bilena she tried to outplay Marichu Bacaro as a guard. The problem - Bacaro is a guard, arguably the best in the country now, and Lualhati is a forward.

i hope this will not hurt.... from a reliable source... AU , AUF and EAC are slugging it off for ranking (whos gonna be 1-3) for the ncaa 2009 and 2010 season... isa sa 2009 and two the following year..

lyceum got minus points with its adoption of don bosco makati as their highschool teams....dapat daw binili ng lyceum and don bosco which is impossible...

the mancom members dislikes the athletic director of lyceum MR TANNY GONZALEZ due to reasons that i think is very sensitive.... he used to be asst. commissioner of the ncaa under coach chito narvaza... as what the mancom says "kung wala si tanny dyan sa lyceum baka may pag asa pa..."

lastly, the marketing side of the school business... lyceum is between mapua and letran... so its just sop to protect the interest of each school in terms of potential student market....

i think AUF has the edge due to a big influence from above..... CHED Chairman Manny Angeles owner of AUF...

Anyway, if that is the case of Lyceum, all the more that Lyceum should be commended for it. Lyceum knew that they do not have a chnace of getting into the NCAA without a Junior team, but they went out of their way to forge a partnership with a good High School program which does not evolve in basketball alone but in all other sports.

i think lyceum operated a gradeschool & a highschool during the 70's
it was discontinued ata for economic reasons
sana i-resurrect ng mga laurels ang gradeschool & highschool
so that the university could join one of the major collegiate leagues soon

the university will open a new campus in cavite in '09
the manila campus & batangas campus will also expand
the law school is located in the central business district of makati
impressive di ba

but the bosconians there are not limited to makati
meron din galing manda, pampanga & tarlac

Has Chris Acqualiful finally gotten his papers in order?

That was the problem he had: he could not prove he was already a high school graduate.

He had that problem with NU according to head coach Manny Dandan. Acqualiful was even seen on the bench in an NU uniform in last year's Fil Oil, and he even took part in the warm-ups and the shoot-arounds.

Acqualiful then found his merry way to STI College, where he again failed to produce his high school papers, much to the consternation of head coach Vic Icasiano.

He tried to pull a fast one by then going to STI's NAASCU rival St Clare College, but he was blunted during the screening held at CEU prior to last season, again because he did not have his high school papers.

Last Fr Martin conference he suddenly surfaced on the Informatics bench in the middle of the eliminations, which of course reduced Informatics to guest team status, having brought in a foreign player not originally on their roster.

Now Acqualiful is with Lyceum? Hmm...

Sounds like Derrick Rose and his posse at Simeon High School. Three members of the back to back champion state high school basketball team had their grades changed for a month when their transcripts were presented to their division I school. Rose is smelling like the proverbial flower by hitting the NBA lottery but his posse members are either in college limbo or in jail. Memphis may pay the price for consorting with a known street agent, kapatid ni Rose.

Ian Sangalang asserted his might inside the paint, while Ronald Pascual broke out of his slump as San Sebastian dumped Arellano, 79-71, last night to vault into solo second in the 88th NCAA basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The 6-foot-6 Sangalang played the entire game and finished with 22 points and 14 boards to help the Stags survive the absence of the suspended Calvin Abueva.

Pascual, who just recovered from flu, shot 18 points that went with nine rebounds.

The Stags looked in control until early in the final period when the Chiefs went on a 10-0 blast to tie the game at 63.

But the Stags figured out a way to solve the Chiefs’ fullcourt press and Pascual fired two triples sandwiched by short jumpers from Sangalang as the Stags, pulled away at 73-63.

In the second game, St. Benilde arrested a four-game slide with an 87-73 trouncing of Lyceum.

The scores:

SAN SEBASTIAN 79—Sangalang 22, Pascual 18, Juico 9, Miranda 9, Maiquez 8, Dela Cruz 7, Gusi 6, Binuya 0, Balucanag 0, Antipuesto 0.

ARELLANO 71—Hernandez 21, Forrester 13, Pinto 10, Zulueta 8, Caperal 8, Cadavis 4, Acidre 4, Salcedo 2, Bangga 1.

Quarters: 24-25, 41-35, 63-57, 79-71

MANILA, Philippines - Jose Rizal fed on an explosive first half offensive and bucked repeated rallies by San Sebastian for an 82-74 victory that kept the Bombers Final Four hopes afloat in the 88th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.

Byron Villarias unleashed a game-high 28 points he spiked with a season-high tying eight triples as the Bombers snared their 10th win against seven losses to move just half-a-game behind joint third running Perpetual Help Altas and Letran Knights (10-6).

Jose Rizal survived a second half explosion by Calvin Abueva, who struggled in the early going but finished strong and wound up with 26 points, 20 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

But the Bombers, who nearly squandered a 20-point bulge at the turn, made the right plays at the right time on both ends down the stretch to preserve the victory while dealing Stags their fifth defeat againt 11 triumphs.

“I’m just happy the players showed character in the end,” said Jose Rizal coach Vergel Meneses.

JRU’s win likewise gave reigning champion San Beda the top seeding with a 14-2 card.

Earlier, Fil-Canadian James Forrester fired 24 points as Arellano U trounced an undermanned Lyceum side, 58-49, in a non-bearing game.

Forrester highlighted his scoring binge with five triples as the Chiefs took control in the second quarter and went on to dominate the Pirates to hike their record to 6-10.

Although out of the Final Four race, Arellano U coach Koy Banal still told his players to play their best.

“Whether it’s a championship game or just a practice match, I always tell players to give it all,” said Banal, who hopes to figure well in the semis race next year with an intact roster.

The Pirates, who have played without Chris Cayabyab, Vence Laude, Mark Francisco and Floricel Guevarra for the third straight game due to academic deficiencies, fell to 3-14.

In juniors’ play, San Sebastian fought off a furious challenge by Jose Rizal as it carved out a 79-70 victory to seize the solo lead and clinch the first twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four with a 15-1 record.

Arellano U routed Lyceum, 125-36, in another non-bearing contest to improve to 7-9.

Jose Rizal fell to 6-11 while Lyceum took its 16th straight loss.
