Preseason Tournament now in the works
by Mike Abasolo
Wednesday, 13 February 2008

The Philippine Collegiate season is just around the corner. FilOil Flying V will once again organize a preseason tournament slated to start on April 13, 2008 at the Arena in San Juan.

“FilOil is committed to sports development. The NCAA and UAAP carries within a natural sense of school spirit. And with that brings a sense of competitiveness that only both these leagues can offer to all the Collegiate Basketball fans”, according to Dave Dualan, the man behind the FilOil Flying V preseason tournament.

16 teams have been invited but only 15 will join. Last years suspended NCAA member school, Philippine Christian University (PCU) is the lone team that will probably skip the tournament.

First Group:

1. Ateneo Blue Eagles
2. FEU Tamaraws
3. JRU Heavy Bombers
4. Mapua Cardinals
5. NU Bulldogs
6. San Beda Red Lions
7. UE Red Warriors

Second Group:

2. CSB Blazers
3. De La Salle Green Archers
4. Adamson Falcons
5. UP Fighting Maroons
6. Perpetual Altas

As a Maroons fan, I believe that this will be the litmus test of Coach Aboy Castro as the new head coach of the very depleted UP team. ;)

Mabuti naman at sa San Juan Arena ang venue, malapit-lapit At sana mas reasonable ang price ng ticket. May kataasan yung last year. >:( >:( >:( Minsan lang ako nanood ng live di na ako umulit. :(

Okay nga na The Arena in San Juan ang venue. Hindi naman kasi ganun karami ang nanonood ng Fil-Oil Games so it is just reasonable enough to select a smaller venue like The Arena for the event. :)

Buhay na naman ang college basketball sa Metro Manila. Mas ok ang Arena sa akin kasi isang sakayan lang papunta sa venue. Hope UST will fare well this year. Malakas ang mga kalabang team. Matira matibay dito!

^ Personally, I'd rather have the Team A players sit this out. There's just too much basketball for the boys and they may suffer from burn out even before the next UAAP Basketball season. Sana yung Nike Summer League nalang ang last league fpr them.

I am very happy for this league.
They established themselves as the pre-season tournament before the real game sbegin and most especially they had the opportunity bring both NCAA and UAAP together.

Parang merge league na din but less bragging rights dahil pag natalo ang isang team they can claim that it is just a pre season tournament.

The clause invitational rings again and does this mean it could be snubbed? :'(

Heard that UST might skip this tournament pala. So far, team officials have not yet decided if they will join the Fil-Oil Summer league dahil sunod-sunod na ang mga pre-season tournaments na sinasalihan nila. Baka this might take its toll sa mga bata. ;D ;D ;D

I just wonder if this time the teams invited will field their A-list players. Since this is probably the premiere off-season tournament now, I feel the teams better send their best players. I've never really seen the wisdom of all this "hiding" of players. For cryin' out loud, how long can you keep a really good player a secret? And if its a veteran, how much of his game do you have to hide? I say let all the teams put together their best lineups and let's see who really comes out on top, no holding back and no more hiding.

There is a strong chance na ang makikita nating line-up will be the same just like sa Fr. Martin Cup. ;D ;D ;D

I believe that the coaches will use their new recruits more often as possible to sharpen their skills pagdating ng UAAP at NCAA. Anyway, excited nako dito kasi at least yung ibang teams na hindi nakasali sa Fr. Martin Cup eh makikita na rin natin.

Looks like San Beda was placed in the tougher group. San Beda will battle FEU, ADMU, JRU and UE in Group 1.

Group 2 seems to be a lot easier. From the looks of it, the FilOil Finals will be DLSU or UST vs. Ateneo or San Beda or FEU or UE or JRU.

Pareng LION, crossover elimination yata ang format. That means the teams will not be playing against the teams in their group during the eliminations.

Tila malalakas ang nasa Gr 1, kawawa ang karamihan ang nasa Gr 2 dahil yung Gr 1 teams ang makakalaban nila.

Sino kaya ang gumawa ng grouping?

Having Perpetual, Adamson, Benilde and UP all in Gr 2 seems not right. Lahat yan nasa bottom 2 ng magkabilang liga, pero eto at magkasama sa isang group!

Pareng Lion, you're too kind. Kalawang ang mga Green Archers namin even though some of them played in the last Father Martin Cup open division. Plus ang daming nawalang players most notably Ty Tang and Cholo Villanueva who were instrumental in helping us bagged the first Fil-Oil pre season tourney last year. And most probably, coach Franz will not be coaching in the tournament as he is busy with the RP youth team. But although mas mahirap ang makakalaban namin in the elims against Ateneo, San Beda, UE, FEU and JRU, in my opinion, this will serve us better in the long run than playing against the weaker teams like Adamson, Perpetual, CSB and UP (with due respect to these teams).

Hello All!!!

Dave the Barbraian here! On behalf of the organizers of FILOIL - FLYING V Sports, i thank all of you for showing interest in the upcoming FILOIL FLYING V Pre-Season Invitational Tournament.

We promise exciting games and unique match-ups. For the gentleman who asked when the CSB - DLSU gamwe will be; this should take place in the quarter finals. Both schools are in group B and therefore will not face each other in the elimination phase as we have a intergroup phase here. This means that Group A teams only play group B and vice versa.

See at the games!!!!!!

The discussion we have so far on the groupings were based on the Feb 13 report at inboundpass. But there was a new press release dated March 12 w/c shows a different grouping:

Eto ang nakalagay sa March 12 press release--

Group A –
Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles
Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers
Adamson University Falcons
Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights
Far Eastern University Tamaraws
San Sebastian College Recoletos Golden Stags
University of the East Red Warriors

Group B -
University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers
Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals
University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas
College of St. Benilde Blazers
National University Bulldogs
University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons
De La Salle Green Archers
San Beda Red Lions

Hindi na magkakasama sa isang group ang bottom 2 placers of both UAAP and NCAA.

Adamson is now in Gr A.

Perpetual, Benilde and UP are in Gr B.

Group A has only 7 teams, while there are 8 in Gr B. Dahil intergroup ang elimination, Gr A teams will play 8 games, while Gr B will have 7 games.

Kutob ko, to compensate Gr A teams for having to play more games, 3 cellar dwellers were placed in B. ;D

At malamang, kaya inihiwalay ang Adamson dahil that early during the coaches' meeting, alam na nang mga iyan na babalik na si Austria w/c will make the Falcons competitive again.

Ateneo’s prize rookies Nico Salva, big man Justin Chua and 2007 NCAA junior’s MVP Ryan Buenafe were given playing time by head coach Norman Black but were none factors in the game.

Obviously, nangagapa pa ang mga bata. Pero i like what I saw with Ryan at Nico. Palaban mga bata. Once naka adjust na sila sa collegiate games nakakatakot sila as players. Headache sa mga opposing players at coaches.

Anyway, good game for San Beda. As usual, monster si Sam Ekwe sa loob at even sa perimeter. Dami niya napasol 10 to 15 feet out. Sumikat rin ulo ng Ateneo centers dahil sa laki niya.

04-13-2008, 09:54 PM
Among all the names you mentioned, LA Revilla played best. Good ball handling, Got a lot of steals. Reminds me of the other LA when he dribbles. Fearless. Crowd favorite. Maui Villanueva was good not great. He was aggressive on the boards and showed some perimeter game. Bagatsing is a player. Slasher type and fights a lot for the loose ball. Very good in getting the offensive rebounds. He did not show any perimeter game. Noble played but did not show much.

Marko, Ferdinand, Malabes and Cua did not play. JRU players just look tired. Turnover after turnover. Missed lay-ups and free throws. Sena was not really a factor. Wilson was the only threat. La Salle out rebounded them. JRU had a game vs UE yesterday in the Nike League.

LA played well. He was fearless and displayed good ball handling and awesome court vision. Mukhang tumangkad pa dahil pataas yung buhok. ;D

Maui Villanueva needs to bulk up but he is a good perimeter player who can help inside when needed.

Joshua Webb is an athlete. He reminds me of Rico M. when he was just a rookie, always jumping and hustling. If he develops like Rico did, he'll be an explosive player. Maui and Joshua played well enough that Franz forgot all about Ferdinand.

San Beda handed Ateneo its ass 70-61 in the first game of the 2008 Fil-Oil Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup. Sam Ekwe presided over a third quarter breakaway that Ateneo simply could not overcome and Pong Escobal carried the cudgels in the end game. Chris Tiu and Eric Salamat, Ateneo's primary weapons, simply could not find the range against the tough San Beda defense. A surprise package was JR "Baby Shaq" Taganas who had seven points and six boards in the critical minutes when Ateneo was trying to mount a comeback.

In the second game veterans JV Casio, a former Red Cubs star, and Rico Maeirhofer presided over Lasalle's dismantling of a tired JRU squad 69-53 something in that neighborhood. The two veterans steadied the ship in the second half even as rookies LA Revilla and Maui Villanueva put in quality minutes to help the Green Archers pull away from the Heavy Bombers late in the third quarter.

After the games I had a half-dozen bucket of cold ones over at the Yoohoo BBQ in Metrowalk.

The morning after should be a doozy...

la salle had the less heralded rooks but dlsu relies more on the system anyways.

is this J. Escueta the same Escueta i saw play with PBA ROY front runner ryan reyes in that visiting LA Showtime tourring team composed mainly of fil-ams based in LA?

On several occasions, he would make many of those jumpers. But I wish he'd develop some footwork and either dunk or use the board which is higher percentage.

Fil-Oil SBC vs. ADMU 041308

* Saw the game over at IBC 13 yest. evening. I couldn't help thinking about the results of these 2 team's 1st meeting early this year last March 3, 2008, where SBC lost against ADMU's 2007 lineup. I was wondering how SBC would fare against that same lineup, now that they were reinforced w/ their vaunted rookie players.

ADMU

* As it turned out, ADMU simply did not quite shoot as well from the 3-point area as they had in the last game. And without that 3-point shot to fall back to, ADMU looked very vulnerable out there on the floor. The 3-point shot is low percentage shot, & unless you have Allan Caidic, or Shin Dong Pa on the team, the law of averages will catch up w/ you in one game or another.

* None of the name rookies played well in the game. Justin Chua had an airball or two, while Ryan Buenafe hit the side of the board on one attempt, then committed some turnovers, prompting Norman Black to pull him out from the floor. Nico Salva had his shot spectacularly blocked by SBC's defense, & he was only able to get some points towards the end of the game.

* Chris Tiu seems to have his guns jammed this game from the 3-point area, though he didn't seem to have missed any of his mid-range jumpers. I think he has that shot down pat, & Black should allow him to take more of those types of shots, especially if he is missing from the 3-point range.

* The biggest disappointment for me is Rabeh Al-Hussaini. After pretty good stints in the last University Games & the CCL, I haven't seen him play well lately offensively. He did get some blocks, plus some rebounds off Sam, but his low post presence was nowhere to be seen, & he couldn't hit many of his outside shots. I was hoping to see Ford Arao numbers from this guy this season, but the way he's been playing against SBC lately, am beginning to doubt that. He just can't seem to get off good shots against quality Centers.

SBC

* Sam Ekwe was one of the main factors this game around for SBC, as not only did he dominate the rebounds against ADMU, he also was a big factor offensively. Udo in their last game was able to match Sam's output in terms of rebounds, but wasn't a factor offensively, as he was this game.

* Borgie Hermida played another good game against ADMU. Most people tend to the see more of Ogie Menor's flashy shots, or Pong Escobal's 3-point shooting, but Hermida has been pretty steady lately w/ those outside shots & penetrations. He has become a vital cog for this team, providing steady plays at the point.

* I wasn't impressed w/ Ogie Menor's percentages from the floor as he missed quite a number of times spectacularly. I think he still lacks a reliable outside shot, as a good cross over dribble off those penetrations. Well, he still has 2 more seasons w/ the Red Lions to work on those weaknesses.

The San Beda Red Lions proved why they are the Big Red Machine against Ateneo last night.

Experience, talent and muscle were the obvious factors in last night's game. Despite a slow start, they came back strong in the late first quarter and grabbed the lead by second quarter and never relinquished the lead. That is the championship poise and experience of the RL. Too much muscle as they were outrebounded and outhustled. Too much beef in that RL frontline (Ekwe, Taganas, Marcelo, Udo, Pascual) all standing 6'5 and above except for Taganas. Hermida, Escobal, Ekwe and Menor all scored in double digits.

Chris Tiu and Pong Escobal just cancelled themselves with their brilliant plays. The game exposed Ateneo's waterloo, a big man who could give them points in the paint. Al-Hussaini is no Ford Arao, he gets his points from the perimeter. The same goes for Baclao. Although both are excellent defensive big men. It also showed the absence of a second prolific scorer after Chris Tiu. I was hoping Salamat would be the energy guy who could provide that off the bench.

It is still the offseason. And there are a lot of adjustments to be made.

Salamat had his moments yesterday, like that in-your-face steal off Hermida and the layup in front of Ekwe. He's got energy and tons of it. He has to cut down on the TOs, though. And Ateneo got rattled by the San Beda press, especially when Kirk was playing the point. Austria was better in breaking the press, and I guess the game would've been closer if the backcourt consisted of Salamat, Tiu, and Austria.

He still has that scorer's mentality from his San Sebastian HS days. I felt Jai Reyes plays well with Tiu. He got lost in the mix last night. I would love Salamat and Long play together off the bench.

It's different from DLSU's patented press. SBC's version is more of a trapping defense and the Lions don't usually start it in the inbound like what DLSU does.

Most of the time, pag medyo patawid na ng mid court yung ball handler ng kalaban dun bigla ise-set up yung trap. It's not predictable in the sense that you wouldn't know when the trappers will attack.

I saw the game last night at ch 13. Ateneo's 4 chocolate chip rookies (sorry, cant help* ;D) were nowhere to be found. Black used them sparringly. Buenafe played briefly, Salva played only to foul every Bedan player in sight as the time winds down. Black still relies on his veterans Tiu and Rabeh so this will pretty muc Blacks gameplan come UAAP 71.

Im still amazed with San Beda and they are on their way to their 3rd NCAA title in a row. Ekwe and Menor is in their usual offensive firepower while Hermida and Escobal provided clutch baskets.

Its the same defense I was wondering RL did not utilize in Team Animo last season. Team Behold executed that with perfection in thier FMC II stint last year. Its a 2-2-1 press designed to trap the ball handler on both sides of midcourt line. Iniisip ko dati baka ka nga kay JB Sison lang yun. With the roster depth that Frankie have this incoming season he can afford throwing that type of defense. Bagay sya pagsabay si Bam and Jake sa forward positions. Thier length suits it well.

Guys, Cholo Villanueva is part of the La Salle coaching staff for the duration of the Fil-Oil tournament.

He is doing this while playing for Toyota Otis and waiting for the start of the filing of applications for the PBA rookie draft.

I won't be surprised if La Salle gets him in the regular coaching staff for the UAAP season if he doesn't turn pro.

By the way, UST didn't participate in the tournament because their rectors turned down the invitation from the organizers.

PCU? Well, they're still ironing out their eligibility problems.

Chocolate Chips. It must be "CHIPS AHOY!" ;D :D

JRU's game was horrible. Though, their reliables were playing in the PBL (Sena, Cagoco, Wilson, Hayes, Prada), they played individual basketbal and not team basketball.

For Mark Cagoco and John Wilson, three words 'PASS THE BALL". They better learn to play as a team and not individually.

Good point. They have time to get back into shape before the NCAA opens in July.

In my opinion, Ogie Menor (SAN BEDA) and Dylan Ababou (UST) are the best small forwards in college basketball today.

Just wondering, will we experience a "hotly contested" 2nd half in the last game of each play date? Someone turned off the aircon during the 2nd half of the DLSU-JRU game, and it got progressively more uncomfortable as the game wound down.

parking in ULTRA is a nightmare...

Off-Topic: I know pero tentative pa naman yun. Besides, ULTRA is a "safe" choice to hold both small, non-crowd getting games and big games that could not be accommodated at the Araneta Coliseum due to a variety of reasons (e.g. conflicting schedule with another event), which is probably the reason why UP, Season 71 host, is contemplating to use it as a venue for men's basketball competitions this coming season.

However, I am still hoping that The Arena in San Juan will be considered by UP and the UAAP, yun nga lang, medyo maliit ito to host even some of the "small" UAAP games given the fact that its maximum seating capacity is only 5,000.

On-Topic: Congrats pala sa San Beda Red Lions. Bilib ako kina Baby Shaq Taganas, Borgie Hermida at Sam Ekwe. Nagkakaroon na ng magandang shot selection si Ekwe tapos sina Taganas at Hermida, wala nang takot na sumugod sa mga kalaban at sumaksak. ;D

LA Revilla got a lot of good reviews. Not to take anything from the kid, I think JRU didn't play him right.

JRU was outright stupid in banging the kid from the backcourt. Akala ba nila magugulat at matatakot nila ang bata. Nakita lang manipis ang katawan, ayun "pinisikal". The Staglets contained him. So did the Squires. Those were smart teams. Pero itong Bombers. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaay naku!

LA doesn't have a reliable outside shot, even open jumpers. So why stick close to him? Hindi mo rin naman basta-basta maaagawan yan.

Pag dinikitan mo yan sa front court, you open up passing lanes in front of him. That he will exploit. Guard him from an arms length distance and cover passing lanes infront. Force him to pass to the sides. If he fakes, don't bite. Let him take as many outside shots as he wants, the percentages will not work to his favor...not yet.

For two seasons I followed this kid, the lack of a consistent perimeter shot/ open jumper is, imo, the only thing missing in his game. When he acquires that skill, ewan ko kung paano pa yan dedepensahan.

Simply, the key in defending him NOW is to cover the passing lanes infront of him.

But the transformation I am waiting to see in the kid, now that he is in DLSU, is for him to bulk up the way TY did. That may take one full season or longer, maybe two. Pag kumapal na ang katawan niya mas marami pa siyang magagawa at both ends of the court.

Then, he will be more exciting and more fun to watch.

Hindi naman spoiled yung players. Wala na lang choice si Vanguardia dahil yun na yung magagaling na players niya and he does not have the luxury of a deep bench.*

That basically is the weakness of JRU, walang reliable 2nd and 3rd units.* Vanguardia is forced to live or die with his starters.

Ateneo beat the shit out of Perpetual 98-68 or somewhere thereabouts. Nonoy Baclao made a mockery of the entire Altas frontline, scoring, rebounding and blocking at will. Ateneo pulled away midway through the second quarter with a blitz of slashing and offensive putbacks coming from Ryan Buenafe, Justin Chua, Eric Salamat and Yuri Escueta. Rookies Buenafe and Chua started for Ateneo. Chua had a step-back three off a pick and pop that dropped a lot of jaws.

Ron Reyes had a game-high 20 points on very good shot selection for the Altas. Nono Galabin chipped in 11 points and six boards.

I only stayed for the first quarter of the NU-Mapua game. Only seven NU players showed up in the first period including stars Edwin Asoro, Jay Jhanke, Ray Aguilar and Dave Catamora, Jewel Ponferada and a couple of guards completed the magnificent seven. The rest of the Bulldogs came in early in the second period after they apparently disposed of PWU in the Nike tournament.

Don't you just love scheduling conflicts? ;D

Pahabol comments on the last game day:

I read a post that said ADMU's low outside shooting percentage did them in. But what made them choose to shoot more 3s? Yes, Same Ekwe. Nobody comes close to an Ekwe in the UAAP.

Unlike most here who had mixed reactions to DLSU's Villanueva's debut, I am impressed with his first game considering that he's been away from local hoops for a long time. Will be a big head ache for other UAAP teams when he completes his residency.

He is a point guard who was practicing with Team B of FEU, 2 years ago. He was removed from the team and last heard was trying out for the Blazers last year. Sayang this kid because he had game but had other priorities thats why FEU basically let him go.

I went to watch the game and although we lost in a blow-out, I wasnt that disappointed.

UE humbles CSB, 92-71.
by Get_Blazed

The game was won by UE's 3-point shooting and pressure defense. Turnovers really killed CSB's chances. Despite getting open looks, the Blazers just had a hard time scoring. They struggled the whole first half and ended trailing UE, 21-7 in the first quarter. The first half wrapped up a 30 point lead by the Warriors. The Blazers started to pick up steam by late 3rd quarter, they started knocking down shot after shot and running the break successfully, but proved too late.

Archimedes David was the only Blazer who successfully made 3 pointers, and he was 3-5 in the perimeter. Meanwhile, UE's James Martinez and Paul Lee was toying in the perimeter as they made a lot of trifectas.

Newbies Mac Abulacion and Dalanon together with veterans Illie Johnston, Harvey Porras, Jacob Manlapaz, Archie David, Jeff Morial, and 2nd year player Gelo Montecastro saw action for Benilde. UE was bannered by Hans Thiele, Elmer Espiritu, Paul Lee, James Martinez, and a lot of newcomers. The highlight of the game was the alley-oop dunk connected by high-flying Elmer Espiritu from a miss by UE's Reyes.

Confirmed, sir. Mac Abulacion(#8 PG) was in the line-up. Napakabilis nya pero nagsstruggle pa sa break. May ball-handling and konting passing pero he has yet to show scoring abilities and inteligence in the court. ;D

Ateneo vets hammer 73-68 win over Mapua

By Jasmine W. Payo

MANILA, Philippines -- Attention returned to the Ateneo veterans with the absence of two celebrated rookies in its 73-68 triumph over Mapua in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini buried 19 points, including a decisive three point play in the last 73 seconds that padded the Blue Eagles lead, 70-65, after the Cardinals rallied within a bucket at 67-65.

Absent in the Blue Eagles' second win in three outings were much hyped recruits Ryan Buenafe, the NCAA junior Most Valuable Player last season, and Nico Salva.

Buenafe suited up for the San Sebastian Staglets anew to represent the National Capital Region at the Palarong Pambansa in Palawan, while Salva contracted chicken pox.

"They'll be back in a week," said Ateneo coach Norman Black.

Jai Reyes knocked down a key triple for the Eagles for a 65-60 edge just when the Cardinals threatened at 62-60 behind Kelvin dela Peña, who shot a game-high 28 points, and Neil Pascual.

Top gunner Chris Tiu also helped build a 43-35 halftime buffer by scoring all of his 13 points in the first half.

The Cardinals absorbed their first setback after opening with an 87-77 triumph over National University last week.

The scores:

ATENEO 73--Al-Hussaini 19, Tiu 13, Long 9, Chua 7, Reyes 6, Baclao 6, Escueta 6, Salamat 4, Austria 2, Sumalinog 1, Gonzaga 0.

MAPUA 68--Dela Peña 28, Mangahas 13, N. Pascual 6, Banal 6, Cornejo 5, Acosta 3, Mazo 3, J. Pascual 2, Sarangay 2.

Quarters: 19-13, 43-35, 54-48, 73-68

UE routs St. Benilde, 92-71

By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 18:05:00 04/21/2008

MANILA, Philippines -- Sophomore guard Paul Lee paced the University of the East's early scoring tear as the Warriors kicked off their bid with a 92-71 pummeling of the St. Benilde Blazers in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

Lee, along with James Martinez and Pari Llagas, towed the Warriors to a 19-7 start that stretched to 31 points, 49-18, late in the second quarter.

Even with the departure of main man Mark Borboran and several other key cogs, the Warriors still looked formidable with new recruits Erwin Duran and Paul Zamar, both elevated from UE's junior team, former Letran Squires ace Lucas Tagarda and San Beda Cubs' John Ray Alabanza.

"We're a smaller team than last year, but we're quicker," said coach Dindo Pumaren of his Warriors, runner-up to La Salle in the last UAAP season.

"Our four veteran players are a big loss, so the performance of the rookies will be important. But I think we'll be all right."

Lee led the balanced charge with 12 points, while Martinez and Toto Bandaying finished with 11 apiece.

Gee Abanilla, a former La Salle assistant mentor, debuted as the Blazers new head coach three months after replacing Caloy Garcia.

The scores:

UE 92--Lee 12, Martinez 11, Bandaying 11, Llagas 9, Espiritu 8, Alabanza 8, Lingganay 8, Thiele 6, Zamar 5, Acuña 5, Duran 4, Etrone 4, Reyes 1, Tagarda 0.

ST. BENILDE 71--Morial 13, David 12, Sevilla 7, Porras 6, Montecastro 6, Dalanon 6, Johnston 4, Manlapaz 4, Abulocion 4, Wong 4, Santos 2, Dino 2, Umlas 1, Manalac 0, Dela Paz 0.

Quarters: 19-7, 52-20, 75-44, 92-71

---I was right, Benilde did win both 3rd and 4th quarters. It was 24-23 for the 3rd, and 27-17 for the 4th. Masyado lang talaga malaki yung lead by the half. :)

Mike Galinato at Adamson, Rey Alabanza at UE,* Mark Sarangay at MIT. At least their college basketball careers has continued and we may finally see them play in an official collegiate game on teams that are in need of serviceable big men. I wish them well.

I don't see ex-Red Cub TG Guilermo's name in the Cardinals lineup. Is he injured or has he played out his eligibility?

Baste won as well, 94-79. A team effort, but jim viray and jimbo aquino did most of the damage, hitting treys and scoring at will. Gilbert bulawan was in the bench wearing team clothes, his absence is hardly felt. Mark Bringas (older brother of arvie of the staglets) provided the hustle, he is rock solid in the paint.

- I saw emeka udo in the shootaround, has a solid built but still has to work his shots. And he looks like darvin ham ;D

Yes. Sa cross-over semi-finals ang next coverage. But I also heard they will try to get the ADMU -DLSU game.

Blazers scorch Knights
by Josef Ramos

The Knights pounded hard but got beat by the Blazers.

The College of Saint Benilde, coached by new mentor Gee Abanilla, refused to call them a “below-par” collegiate squad starting now in the Flying V Pre Season Invitational Cup.

“It shouldn’t be like that. Other teams must respect us,” said Abanilla, after the CSB Blazers outscored the Letran College Knights in the payoff period to eke out a 71-64 come-from-behind win last April 28, 2008 at The Arena in San Juan City. “We should prove our point like what we did today.”

Down by 43-51 at the end of third frame, College of Saint Benilde showed character in the last quarter to bounce back from a sluggish third quarter by unleashing a merciless 28-13 run that handed the Blazers their first win in two games.

“I though we almost lost it, but I’m happy the boys have learned how to win,” said Abanilla, also an assistant coach in Red Bull in the PBA. “I’m hoping all my players will sustain this kind of game.”

Forward Jeff Morial led the Blazers with 11 points, while Jacob Manlapaz collected 13 rebounds and hit 10 markers and Harvey Porras had 10 points.

Morial and Porras merged for 20 points in the final quarter, including the fast break lay up of Porras that pushed the Blazers to a 66-64 lead with 1:12 minutes to go. The Knights could not find a decent shot in the last minute mark while the Blazers had five attempts from the free throw line to peg the final count.

The game was close at first quarter (16-all) and College of Saint Benilde took the halftime lead at 34-36.

Reymar Gutilban led Letran with 14 points with Dino Daa contributing for 12 points. Bryan Foronda and RJ Jazul had 11 points each for the Knights.

Individual Scores:

CSB (71) — Morial 11, Umlas 10, Manlapaz 10, Porras 10, David 8, Montecastro 7, Abolucion 4, Dela Paz 4, Santos 4, Manalac 3, Wong 0, Johnston 0, Dino 0.

Yes. They will. I put them 3rd in my rankings after UST and DLSU.
I saw them last year. Hinog na sila for this season. They will be "the Sleeper".
As for Ateneo, over hype sila b'coz of their rookies. Ateneo is having trouble with teams that are strong in the frontline, San Beda and FEU. Against UST and DLSU, talagang mahihirapan sila.

Benilde eyes another upset win

Games today
(The Arena)
2 p.m. — Letran vs Perpetual
4 p.m. — CSB vs Ateneo
6 p.m. — UP vs SSC

With its morale on a high following a shock win over Letran, the College of St. Benilde Blazers eye another victory against a slipping Ateneo side in one of the games on schedule today in the 2nd Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

The Blazers caught the Knights napping last Monday and scored a 71-62 upset win for their first win in two games in Group B, and are hoping to do the same against the Blue Eagles in the 4 p.m. match in this tournament backed by Total Metro Oil, Canopy Homes, Flying V Biodiesel Premium, Smart, Boysen, Bayo, Metathione, Padi’s Point, CDO, Reyes Barbecue, Chowking, Ecology Marine Transport Specialist, Inc., Diamond Purified Drinking Water and official ball Nike.

Ateneo fell to a resurgent Far Eastern University squad late Wednesday, 61-52, as their starters groped for form against the Tams’ stingy defense.

It was FEU’s second straight victory in Group B, putting it only a win behind San Beda College, which secured its third straight win against San Sebastian College, 75-58, also late Monday.

But coming off a loss, expect the Blue Eagles to claw back against the Blazers, who last Monday drew double-digit scores from four players.

But to get back on track, Ateneo has to get the usual production from its starters and its celebrated rookies who failed to contribute last Monday, with Justin Chua scoring six and Ronjay Buenafe limping with just three.

In the 2 p.m. opener, the Knights will try to storm back into the contest when they take on the University of Perpetual Help-Dalta System Altas, who have yet to win after three games.

University of the Philippines, meanwhile, faces San Sebastian in the final game for the day at 6 p.m.

San sebastian won against UP 97-85

-Jim viray's right shin was heavily wrapped, dint affect him that much he has a pair of dunks. He posterized Julius Wong of UP with a monster jam.
-Ballesteros has a couple of dunks too, the best was his two handed throwdown against 3 UP defenders.
-Julius Wong of UP seems to be more worried about his hair rather than the game.
-UP led in the 1st half with a solitary point.
-Third quarter dictated the pace for the stags, UP commited too many turnovers.
-Still no sign of Gilbert Bulawan.

Buenafe and Reyes saves Blue Eagles from disastrous finish
by Josef Ramos

Incoming freshman Ryan Buenafe finally showed up when it mattered most as the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles survived a dangerous comeback by Saint Benilde Blazers, 76-72, last April 30, 2008 in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Cup at The Arena in San Juan City .The Ateneo crowd at the arena could not believe what they saw when the Blazers started to crawl thier way back into the game.

“We collapsed in the fourth quarter and nearly lost the game,” said Ateneo head coach Norman Black. “I’m surprised Saint Benilde is starting to mature since Gee (Abanilla) took the coaching job three months ago.”

The Blue Eagles, relying heavily on Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s inside game, outscored the Blazers in the first quarter, 27-13, and eventually controlled the first half, 43-26, with Buenafe providing some offense.

But the Blazers, injected by Abanilla’s never-say-die attitude, did not surrender easily as Aaron Umlas delivered 10 of his 12 points in the third quarter, including three straight baskets, to trim down the Blue Eagles lead to 51-56 at the start of the final quarter.

Saint Benilde outplayed Ateneo in the third quarter, 25-13.

Both teams traded baskets in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, keeping the score close thrice just under the last three-minute mark (68-65), (70-68) and (74-72).

Gary Sevilla, who got 11 points for the Blazers, attempted to steal the limelight with 8.2 seconds remaining, when he fired an open trey but was off the mark.

Saint Benilde fouled Blue Eagles’ Jai Reyes and Chris Tiu and sent them to the free throw line making both thier charity opportunities to peg the final count.

Buenafe scored 6 of his 17 points in the last quarter, while Tiu fired 5 of his 14 points to calm down the Blazers’ scoring rampage in the last period.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini had 17 points in the first quarter and Nonoy Baclao had 11 rebounds. Ateneo improved its record to 3-2 while Saint Benilde dropped to 1-2. Harvey Poras led the Blazers with 13 points

Ateneo 76: Al-Hussaini 17, Buenafe 17, Tiu 14, Buenafe 12, Reyes 7, Long 6, Chua 4, Baclao 3, Baldos 3, Escueta 3, Austria 2.

CSB 72: Porras 13, Umlas 12, Sevilla 11, David 8, Morial 8, Manalac 7, Montecastro 6, Dalanon 5, Manlapaz 2

Quarter Scores: 27-13, 43-26, 56-51, 76-72.

Letran diverted Perpetual’s 4th Quarter storm
by Josef Ramos
Wednesday, 30 April 2008 (109 Views, Be the first one to comment)

Louie Alas looked comfortable. Even though the victory of Letran College against the University of Perpetual Help Dalta System last April 30, 2008 was close, Alas finally had a relief – for now.

The Knights overcame a fourth quarter rally by the Altas to prevail with a 63-59 win and earn their first victory in the Fil-Oil Flying Pre Season Invitational Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.

Guard Reymark Gutilban, scattered 11 points, delivered a three-point play and finished with a lay up inside the last two-minute mark to save the Knights from another disastrous finish and finally making it at the win column after losing their debut game last Monday against Saint Benilde, 71-64.

“It is nice to get back and win again,” said Alas, a multi-titled NCAA Letran mentor. “But I really need to tell my players again and again that we should play defense all-throughout the game. Earlier, we almost lost control, but we recovered just in time.”

Big man John Foronda also had 11 points, while guard Rey Guevarra and forward Dino Daa, collared 16 rebounds, merged for 16 points to hand the Knights a 1-1 slate and push the Altas to the cellar with 0-4 record.

The Altas threatened to pull the rug from under the Letran Knights when they finally took the lead 57-56, after a trey by John Philip Galabin, with only 3:02 minutes remaining.

But after a minute-long drought, Gutilban buried his own trey that ignited a 7-2 run capped by another triple by Kojack Melegrito with time down to 18 seconds.

The Altas failed to score a basket for the final count. Letran took a 50-47 count with 2:11 minutes left. But Galabin quickly tied the game with a trey early in the fourth quarter to make it 50-all.

Raffy Ynion had 11 rebounds on top of his 11 points for his second double-double performance, while Rommel Balboa added 16 points and Galabin chipped in for 12 points for the Altas.

Individual Scores

Letran (63) – Gutilban 11, J. Foronda 11, Guevarra 8, Daa 8, Cabonce 7, Jazul 6, Melegrito 5, Ranises 4, Latonio 3, Belencion 0, C. Foronda 0, Cortez 0.

Golden Stags down Fighting Maroons

inboundpass.com

San Sebastian College - Recoletos has proven time and time again that it can be one of the dark horses this coming NCAA Season.

The San Sebastian Golden Stags banked on a torrid second half shooting to repulse the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 97-85, in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Invitational Cup last April 30, 2008 at The Arena in San Juan City .

Apparently, San Sebastian College, coached by four-time PBL champion Harbour Centre Jorge Gallent, towed the Fighting Maroons and engaged them in a shooting match in the last two quarters.

“When we lost against La Salle because we couldn’t score, I told the players to forget it and focus in this game. I’m glad the players responded well,” said Gallent. “We are a strong team and we can beat powerhouse teams, as we go along.”

The Golden Stags took a 25-22 edge at the end of the opening quarter and UP forward Maggie Sison responded huge in the second quarter, where he nailed 10 of his 18 points to steal the lead at halftime, 44-43.

With the UP Fighting Maroons’ biggest lead at 48-43 early in the third quarter, the Golden Stags, with Jim Viray finding his smooth shooting from the outside, scorched UP with a 30-14 burst just enough to take a 73-58 lead to end the third quarter.

Viray fired off a game-high 28 points, including five triples in the second half, while 6-foot-7 Jason Ballesteros finally made his presence felt by scoring 20 points mostly from open dunks along with 11 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.

“From our ceiling to speed, offense and defense, we just relied on our advantages,” said Viray. “We have more experience than them because most of us play in the PBL.”

Pamboy Raymundo and Dave Najorda, brother of former San Sebastian team captain Leo, now playing for Red Bull in the PBA, had 10 and 8 points respectively, to help give the Golden Stags a 2-1 record. The Fighting Maroons suffered thier 2nd straight loss in the tournament.

Individual Scores:

SSC-R – 97: Viray 28, Ballesteros 20, Raymundo 10, Najorda 8, Delgado 7, Bringas 6, Aquino 6, Semira 5, Maconcido 5, Zullieta 2.

UP 85 – 85: Sison 18, Reyes 11, Braganza 11, Agbayani 9, Gamboa 7, Sorogon 7, Astorga 6, De Asis 2, Delavictoria 2, Ilong-ilong 2

It only proves na hindi porket nakuha mo halos lahat ng blue chippers sa High School eh instant winner ka na.
Nangangapa pa rin players ng Ateneo pero come UAAP time, I think hasa na mga ito. Anyway, good game by both squads.

Tama ka sir. And sana lang hindi nabreak ang spirit ng Blazers because of this heartbreaking defeat. Just look to bounce back and continue playing their best every game from here on. :)

Does anyone know how old Paul Sorongon is?

According to UBelt.com, Paul was born 12/12/1985, so he is currently 22 years old. He has played 2 seasons for the UP Maroons (2005-2006).

Lasalle put together one heck of a finishing kick to down NU in the Fil-Oil.

NU played nearly flawless basketball for three and a half quarters then got nailed to 56 points for some five minutes thanks to the relentless Lasalle defense. PJ Barua and JV Casio then went to town from trey range to give Lasalle the lead and the Green Archers never looked back.

After going nuts from the field throughout the first three quarters the Bulldogs became inexplicably cold in the fourth, unable to hit even layups and point blank shots.

Lasalle capitalized and turned the tables on the Bulldogs, getting the lead with a Barua trey, 58-56, with Casio's trey making it 61-56 in the ensuing play. The defending champions never looked back from there.

Sa boxcores walang Kevin Espinosa at TG Guillermo? Sarangay is puting up good numbers.
Sa kabila naman walang Ballesteros, mukang hirap ang SSCR kung walang Jason sa line up.

I feel bad for loyal Benilde fans dahil kahit CSB sila nagaaral, majority of the fan base will still cheer for the mother school, the Green Archers.

We really do not appreciate La Salle being referred to as a mother school(?). They should be regarded as a sister school, no more no less. Benildeans are Benildeans, thus should give support to CSB's program. Buti sana kung wala kaming sariling athletic program eh. Kaya nga sumali ang CSB sa NCAA para magkaroon ng sariling identity. To further ourselves from La Salle-Manila. Pero ano, wala. >:(
