MLQU cagers gain finals
mb.com.ph

THE MANUEL Luis Quezon University (MLQU) Stallions secured their first final appearance in the 12th Colleges and Universities Sports Association (CUSA) Friday by downing Central Colleges of the Philippine (CCP) Bobcats, 81-71, at the CCP Gym in Sta. Mesa Manila recently.

The Stallions of rookiehead coach Jojo Castillo didn’t give the Bobcats any chance to forge a rubber match in their semis series as they led from start to finish – thanks in large part to Jopher Custodio, Ton-Ton Lustestica at John Derick Dizon.

The Stallions, who joined the league eight years, will face the winner between defending champion Philippine Maritine Institute Mariners and University of Assumption Pampanga Pelicans in a best-of-three finals.

The Pelicans forced a rubber in their own semis series with the Mariners by scoring a pulsating 86-85 win – through the heroics of Cliford Valerio and Rodel Vergara. The Mariners and Stallions secured twice-to-beat bonus in the semis by finishing 12 at the end of the elims.

PBL veteran and last year’s MVP Larry Rodriguez did score 24 but his efforts went down the drain as he failed to get enough support from his teammates.

Philippine College of Criminology outsteadied World Citi College, 82-70, in Game 1 of their best-of-three title series in the junior division while the PCCr ladies squad crushed PMI Lady Mariners, 78-65, also at the start of the best-of-three championships.

TRINITY COLLEGE subdued University of Assumption-Pampanga, 82-71, to snap a three-game losing skid in the 13th Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (CUSA) basketball tournament at the CCP gym in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

Lester Susi exploded with a game-high 41 points as he almost single-handledy carried the Broncos to their first win after three losses in the tournament.

Vincent Medrana was the only other player with double-digit scores for the Broncos of coach Rad Pasco.

Clifford Valerio and Erwin Manluitac paced the Pelicans with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

Overshadowed by Trinity’s win was FEATI’s hard-earned 77-74 win over Philippine College of Criminology.

Marvin Agacer fired 21 points and Israel de la Cruz added 13 points for the Seahawks, who kept their unbeaten record with their fourth straight win.

Mark Pelayo led the Enforcers with 18 points, followed by Mark Pedroso with 16.

maganda nga mag merge na lang sila sa NAASCU or NCRAA since di naman sila na recognize ng SBP.

i think it's better that all these leagues prosper and have a strict implementation of uniformed rules and regulations, then put them in an umbrella league say PCCL at least we have a similar US NCAA format.
pero kung mag merge at maging NCAA or UAAP Div II ang mga ito, papayag kaya ang NCAA at UAAP?

kaya nga nagbuo sila ng sariling liga kasi elitist ang NCAA at UAAP.

UA is 13th Cusa over-all champion
By Raymond C. Garcia
www.sunstar.com.ph

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The question on where their hopes can bring them finally had its answer -- to the highest end.

During the closing ceremony of the 13th season of the Colleges and Universities Sports Association (Cusa) at the Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) in Manila, top officials of the University of the Assumption (UA) were present including UA president Bishop Roberto Mallari.

As the organizers handed the overall champion trophy to UA school officials, cheers and jubilation from supporters and faculty members wrapped the MLQU auditorium as they unanimously chanted the famous UA cheer.

Trinity College of Asia and Philippine College of Criminology, both Manila-based schools, were in second and third place, respectively.

UA, the only province-based participant, bested other nine colleges and universities in Manila after six years of joining the elite competition.

Records showed that UA started its quest in the league during its seventh season, following a two-year leave during the 10th and 11th season.

During the 12th season, UA came back for the love of the game and competition and challenge.

And during the 13th season, the "probinsyanos" kept their heads high after ruling over other Manila-based schools. As UA sports coordinator May Flores puts it, "Nanggagaling sa probinsiya ang mga magagaling (The best comes from the province)."

"UA believes in its talents. We mold them and train them to the fullest," Flores said.

The Blue Pelicans were champions in the cheer dance competition, badminton (women), and table tennis (women); runner up in basketball (women), volleyball (women), swimming (men) badminton (men) and table tennis (men); and third place in basketball juniors division.

Lerry Tuando and Bren David bagged the "rookies of the year" in table tennis men and women while Antonette Sengson was named the most valuable player in the same event.

Badminton coach Rey Reg captured his second best coach trophy the same way Donna Magat did for her second MVP trophy in badminton. Bernadin Booc was rookie of the year.

Mac Alfred Sunga and Johnsiel Noblado were named outstanding swimmers while Kristel Yamat, Noemi Malit, Jovan Magtoto, Mary Gallano and Jennelyn Serrano got their shares in basketball and volleyball.

In the mid 90s, Philippine Christian University and Alejandro College played in this league, CUSA, games at that time were held at Makati Coliseum, in 1997, MLQU went to Australia and emerge victorious, the stallions of playing coach bonnie garcia won the basketball title via a rare sweep. they beat the australians in the finals, and current pro Wynne Arboleda was voted most valuable player. isa sa teammates ni arboleda was melvin taguines, son of ex-pro jimmy taguines.

isa sa teammates ni arboleda was melvin taguines, son of ex-pro jimmy taguines.

Melvin Taguines is a distant nephew of Jimmy Taguines (pamangkin sa pinsan).

Other members of note from that Stallions team were point guard Ramon Regidor and 6'6" center Valentin Domingo.* Arboleda, Taguines, Regidor and Domingo all joined their coach Boni Garcia at the Laguna Lakers in the MBA's first season in 1998.

Some of the CUSA member schools have decided to take a leave from participating either in specific events or worse, in all events for school year 2008-2009. This I gathered from talks with some officials from the member schools. If they cannot muster enough schools, then taking a year off to retool is a prudent decision.

The CUSA has been experiencing membership problems as of late. From 13 schools in 2006, the number dropped to eight last year. It is not sure how many have confirmed for 2008.

^So in a basketball-sense, parang ang basehan ng PCCL sa paglagay sa MLQU sa Sweet 16 is for their CUSA title LAST YEAR instead of this year na reportedly nga mukhang walang tournament.
