The 8th Season of the NAASCU will open on August 8, 2008. Medyo swerte dahil 8th Season opens on 8-8-8!
All teams are beefing up for the forthcoming season and 12 teams are vying for the title. Most probably, last year's finalists, STI and UM will battle on the first game which has been the tradition of sorts the past three or four years.
The Board willl have a planning session this april and I will just post other details of the meetings leading to the opening.

At least mauuna mag open NAASCU sa Olympics. ;D

Pare who are the other top teams / players to watch out for in Season 8?

Are Chito Jaime and Rommel Galvez still playing for your rivals AMACU? How about Glen Bolocon of Baste Cavite?

If we were to look at the 7th Season of the NAASCU as the guage, i think the team to beat this season is the University of Manila Hawks again! Last year we beat them but most of their players are young and will be together for at least 3 more seasons. OUr team has only five returning veterans.
Will inform you of the other top performers from last year namely 2006 MVP Chito Jaime of AMACU, 2007 Mythical 5 selectees Glen Bolocon & Jerome Cenita of SSC-R Cavite plus the other teams involved.
Stay tuned.

Mhel the NAASCU season is just five weeks away. Can you give GAMEFACE the complete lineup of all the participating teams in the basketball competitions?

Also, we'd like to know who you think will be in the Final 4 aside of course from the mighty defending champion STI OLYMPIANS.

yan may expansion..pero kung titingnan natin, halatang parang walang active athletic league sa Central Luzon and Northern Luzon aside from one in Baguio kasi yung mga teams from Pampanga and Lyceum-Subic are joining leagues that are NCR based. Meron yatang 2-3 schools na kasali from Pampanga na naglalaro sa mga NCR leagues and summer tourneys ( Holy Angel University, University of Assumption, Angeles University Foundation). Hopefully SBP will organize an athletic league in these areas, kaya tayo nabubutasan ng grupo nila Pichay e.

congrats to Dr.J. Adalem, NAASCU has become one of the prominent leagues in NCR and if not in the country.

There really is a void in these parts of the hoopdome. Maybe because players from these parts can easily go to Manila as they do not have to cross bodies of water to get there. But, still, the four regions, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, and Central Luzon, should have a basketball league of its own and not just feed off their regional athletic association. For Central Luzon, CLRAA has provided a steady stream of recruits. However, IRAA, CARAA, and most especially CAVRAA don't produce as many college recruits.

i know it's already OT but it's really better for the SBP ED Noli Eala together with PCCL Chairman Rey Gamboa to help schools in these areas to help organize a legitimate collegiate basketball league that can rival those in NCR and in other leagues in the country. Maybe NAASCU could help in one way or the other.

The Southern Tagalog region has 2 leagues competing the SBP-sanctioned and more prominent NCAA-South and the banished BAP-influenced SLCUAA.

I hope areas like the Ilocandia, Cordilleras, Cagayan Valley, Baguio City and Central Luzon will become bastions of basketball competitions up north of NCR. Cebu's CESAFI and Southern Tagalog's NCAA South have shown the way, hopefully other areas will follow.

Funny who you run into in the truly hardcore leagues.

Apparently former San Beda forward Martin Antonio and UST B Team guard Oscar Crisostomo will be seeing action in NAASCU Season 8 for the defending champion STI College Olympians.

The jury however is still out on Chris "Rasta" Acqualifull, the 6-foot-6 power forward from Ghana by way of The Sudan, who started his basketball career with STI, found his way to NU in the Nike and Fil-Oil tournaments, and now is apparently with the St Clare College Saints also in NAASCU. His eligibility is being questioned (surprise) by STI.

NAASCU 8th season also unfolds on 8-8-8
Wednesday, August 6, 2008
www.philstar.com

On the same day the 2008 Olympics fires in Beijing, the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) unwraps its eighth season Friday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum with two schools added in the league roster, further bolstering its claim as the biggest varsity league in the country in terms of membership and student population.

The festivities start exactly at 8:08 a.m. to mark the significance of the league’s eight years of existence, according to NAASCU president Dr. Jay Adalem of St. Clare College of Caloocan.

It’s “8-8-8-8-8” for NAASCU, following the lead of the Beijing Olympics on its “8-8-8 (Aug. 8, 2008)” opener.

Informatics and Lyceum of Subic Bay have joined the league, increasing the league membership to 12 including old members University of Manila, St. Clare, AMA Computer College, STI, University of Makati, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay, New Era, Centro Escolar, Holy Angel-Pampanga and San Sebastian-Cavite. They have a combined student population of almost half a million.

Five-time champion University of Manila and reigning titlist STI collide in the opening game right after the elaborate inaugural rites where SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan is the guest of honor and chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno as keynote speaker.

The search for Mr. and Ms. NAASCU is among the highlights of the inaugural rites to be telecast Sunday on Makisig Network.

All 12 teams see action on opening day with five games set at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum and one at the UM Gym in Sampaloc.

The SSC Baycats and the LSB Sharks clash in the lone game at the UM Gym.

NAASCU Season 8 magbubukas sa 8-8
http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php?issue=2008-08-07&sec=7&aid=69329

Mga laro bukas:
(Rizal Coliseum)
12 n.t. – STI vs UM
1:30 n.h. – St. Clare vs. CEU
3 n.h. – PLP vs UMak
4:30 n.h. – NEU vs AMA
6 n.g. – HAU vs Informatics (UM Gym)
2 n.h. – SSC-Cavite vs Lyceum-Subic

Nagkaroon talaga ng renewed energy and enthusiasm itong liga na ito with Dr. Adalem on board.

hopefully they would continue to flourish and be at par with the 2 major leagues in NCR

San Sebastian could've joined NCAA-South, yun ang nakapagtataka. As for Lyceum and Holy Angel, kung tutulungan ito ng SBP and PCCL magbuo ng sariling liga nila kasama ng mga schools sa Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija and Bataan at least makakatipid ang mga schools dito sa biyahe at expenses. Pwede silang bumuo ng NCAA-North or NAASCU-North.

where is the infamous ato tolentino coaching now?

di ba sya yung coach ng EAC?

* * *Coach Loreto Tolentino Sr. still handles the Senior Men's basketball team of the Rizal Technological University (RTU).

* * *Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) is handled by Coach Nomar Isla.

Coach Ato is also coaching Wang's Commercial team

A mestiso player in the 6-foot-3 to 6-foot-4 range who was at the NAASCU screening in CEU for Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay is now with St Benilde B and seeing action in the Fr Martin Cup 2nd Division.

If PLP coach Alvin Zuniga is wondering where this guy went all he has to do is take the train and get off at the Vito Cruz station. Although considering the said player is from St Mary of the Woods high school it does not surprise me at all that he would have no sense of loyalty or integrity.

ayos din, buti naman meron sila and nagpaparamdam na rin ang Makisig Channel in terms of sports programming.

keep it up!!! i want to see CUSA and NCRAA also at this channel together with those school leagues in the provinces like CESAFI in CEBU and those in Panay, Negros and Mindanao.

IMHO, CUSA isnt really worth it, first of all it is not BAP-SBP accredited, and most members are from either NAASCU or NCRAA. But giving NCRAA a television coverage is due since even NAASCU already has one in Makisig. Sana kunin na rin nila NCRAA. ;)

Sorry OT.

Damn the other league who has the privilege of having weekend coverage.:-\

nasa organizing or managing lang talaga.. :)

Damn the other league who has the privilege of having weekend coverage.:-\

We all know that. Kahit may noble idea tayo, di lang ganun ganun yun. Mahabang proseso kasi. At least unti unti may nagsstep up na.:)

We see these guys up close in the rather small gyms serving as NAASCU venues, no way they are that tall. Aries Parinas is officially listed in the St Clare lineup as 6'3" while Richmond Sibal is 6'2".

Speaking of St Clare, they beat Lyceum of Subic in Subic Gym 84-82 yesterday. Ops Opalia nailed a long jumper and two pressure freethrows to seal the win for the Saints.

FROM ED & ALBERT ANDAYA:

SUBIC -- St. Clare College-Caloocan leaned on Mac Opalia's free throws in the waning seconds to escape with a hard-earned 84-82 win over host Lyceum of Subic Bay and grab the solo lead in the eighth NAASCU men’s basketbal tournament at the jampacked SBMA Sports Complex here.

Opalia's game-winning free throws came after Lyceum's Jessie James Collado tied the score for the last time at 82-all with still 37 seconds left.

Opalia split his free throws for 83-82 lead.

The Sharks had a chance to steal the game but Collado’s put back was blocked by Richmond Sibal, setting up Opalia for another split charities.

The game, however, was later placed under protest by Lyceum officials.

Lyceum officials claimed Sibal should be called for a goal-tending violation when he blocked Collado’s putback.

Phillip Roi Coronel ,a 6-0 guard from Olongapo City, topscored for the Saints with 25 points, followed by Sibal and Opalia with 13 points apiece and Aries Parinas with 10.

The win enabled the Jimmy Mariano-mentored Saints to regain the solo lead with their eight win against only two losses.

Collado carrid the fight for the Kerwin McKoy-mentored Sharks with 22 points.

Laurence Gapasin added 18 points for Lyceum, which dropped to 5-6.

Definitely a goal-tending but sometimes on a last shot it could either way. So the refs didn't make a call, they just let them play it out.

Baycats, Sharks gain
http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php?issue=2008-09-08&sec=7&aid=72302

SAN Sebastian College-Cavite closed out its elimination round campaign on a high note.

SSC-Cavite showed too much class in demolsihing University of Makati, 102-29, for its ninth win in 11 matches at the end of their first round elimination campaign in 8th NAASCU basketball tournament at the UM gym.

Bryan Filio scattered 17 points for the Edgar Macaraya-mentored Baycats, who posted the biggest winning margin in league history.

Oliver Villareal and Jeffrey Acain added 12 points apiece while Jeff Pasagui contributed 11 points to lead the Cavite City-based team to an easy victory over the Hardy Herons.

The Baycats clearly dominated the game against the Hardy Herons, posting a commanding 32-point lead at halftime, 47-15, after limiting their opponents to only four points in the entire second period.

SSC-C further widened the gap in the second half, scoring almost at will while choking UMak with its superior defense.

JR Moresco paced the Hardy Herons with 10 points.

In the other men's encounters, Lyceum of Subic Bay defeated Holy Angel University, 67-62, AMA Computer University downed Centro Escolar University, 72-55, and STI Colleges won by forfetuire over Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay.

Aaron Pellico, Billy Labadan and Jovito Postardo also played well for Lyceum, which is being managed personally by school president and CEO Alfonso E. Borda and sports director June Alpez.

Miguel Bituin topscored for the Flyers with 21 points.

HAU dropped to 1-9 card.

San Miguel Beverages Inc. Brings on Healthy Drinks at the NAASCU Games

Hydration is a key to success for an athlete. San Miguel Beverages Inc. (SMBI), the makers of the vitamin-packed Magnolia Health Tea and Magnolia Fruit Drink, knows this for a fact and so they are in full force at the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) games to help fuel up the players’ working muscles.

With their healthy array of alternative drinks, SMBI serves as one of the hosts of the bigger and better 2008 NAASCU Season 8. “We are very excited to take part in this fresh NAASCU season—it’s a good venue for us not just to promote our latest offerings (Magnolia Heath Tea, Magnolia Fruit Drink and Magnolia Purewater) but also to encourage the youth to switch to a healthy lifestyle through sports and good nutrition,” SMBI General Manager, Bernard D. Marquez said.

SMBI believes that supporting this sporting event will also help them push their “MagBagong Buhay Na!” campaign which aims to sell not only healthy SMBI products but also to sell a healthy kind of behavior to the young “junk food” generation.

“We are really going around different schools in the metro to provide alternatives to the unhealthy school canteen staples (such as carbonated drinks and junk foods) and to incorporate a nutritious yet delicious Magnolia Healthy Beverage in a student’s daily meal,” Mr. Marquez added. SMBI already started promoting the importance of vitamins and hydration to a number of public elementary schools in Metro Manila, and through their NAASCU sponsorship, they now aim to touch the college level.

The NAASCU is already a home to twelve teams, all raring to go, including the STI College Olympians, University of Manila Hawks, San Sebastian College Recoletos-Cavite Baycats, AMA Computer University Titans, St. Clare College Saints, New Era University Hunters, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay Eagles, Centro Escolar University Scorpions, Holy Angel University Flyers, University of Makati Hardy Herons plus two new members—Informatics Icons and Lyceum of Subic Sharks.

Watch out for the NAASCU 2nd round elimination (for senior division) games this month at the Makati Coliseum and see the young athletes fire up as they hydrate with healthy alternative beverages brought by San Miguel Beverages, Inc.

DEFENDING champion STI Colleges withstood a gallant stand by New Era University to eke out a hard-earned 76-75 win and clinch the top spot in the crossover semifinals in the 8th NAASCU men’s basketball tournament at the Makati Coliseum.

NEWCOMER Lyceum of Subic Bay capped a memorable season by beating San Sebastian College-Cavite, 97-87, to clinch the No. 4 spot in the cross-over semifinals in the 8th NASCU basketball tournament at the Makati Coliseum.

Handled by former RP youth player-turned-coach Kerwin McCoy, the Sharks leaned on the dynamic duo of LA Gapasin and JC Collado to close out with a 12-6 win-loss record and clinch the last spot in the cross-over semifinals in this 12-team tournament supported by Magnolia Health Tea and Sunbolt Energy Drinks.

Gapasin topscored with a team-high 29 points, while Collado added 24 points, including six three-pointers, to lead the Sharks to victory.

The Sharks will face defending champion and elimination round topnotcher STI College in the cross-over semifinals with the Olympians holding a twice-to-beat advantage.

Actually, Lyceum finished in a three-way with St. Clare College and AMA Computer University with similar 12-6 cards, but the Saints and Sharks got the No. 3 and No. 4 spot by virtue of higher quotient.

The 8th Season of the NAASCU came down as one of the most exciting season so far. The games were so unpredictable and that the final four was known only on the last day of the modified second round of the tournament. Newcomer Lyceum of Subic Bay caught the last train to the final four as they dislodged 2006 Champion AMA Computer University when they beat the San Sebastian College Cavite Baycats. Actually, LSB, AMACU and St. Clare College were all tied with identical 12-6 slates, but with a superior quotient, the St. Clare College Saints wound up at number 3 while the Sharks got the # 4 slot.

Unfortunately for the Sharks and the Saints the top two teams in the league, the defending champion STI College Olympians and the San Sebastian College Cavite Baycats, ended their dreams in the final four and set up a dream match of their own for the 8th NAASCU title. Both final four meetings ended in just a game with the Olympians repeating over the Sharks 107-97 and the Baycats maltreating the Saints. Here are some factors that we will look at to see how the games will be played between the Olympians and the Baycats.

OFFENSE

These teams are the best offensive teams in the league. STI paced the eliminations with a 94.9 ppg clip while the Baycats are at 94.2 ppg. The two teams love to hustle and pressure their opponents which translates to easy lay ups which resulted in higher averages. These teams blew the opposition to oblivion and their win against UMAK were 83 and 75 points respectively. The main men for the Olympians are Ramon Mabayo, Arnold Danganan and Darryl Mendoza. The Baycats will get their points from Ric Gracilla, Oliver Villareal and Kris Lucernas. The shock troopers of both teams are ready to take the challenge of scoring when needed so if the game becomes one of those run and gun games, we will see lots of players get cramps come crunch time.

Advantage: EVEN

DEFENSE

If both teams are the best in offense they are also the best in defense. The Olympians allow 65 ppg while the Baycats allow 69 ppg. Both teams love to press and are quick to double team. The Baycats are faster than the Olympian guards which prompted them to create other means to stop the SSC guards and let their big guys score. The half court defense of the Olympians during crunch time helped them win in the second round. On the other hand, the non stop hounding of the Baycat guards gave their counterparts lots of problems. This is quite exciting as can be because as they say defense wins championships.

Advantage: EVEN

REBOUNDING

Although smaller than the Olympians, the Baycats are much more aggressive in plucking those rebounds and putting the ball to hoop from an offensive rebound. The Olympians rely heavily on their inside game and will pound the ball inside which will help them get better offensive rebounds. The Baycats love to shoot from the outside which creates problems for the Olympians specially if they are in a zone defense because the Baycats are high leapers and love to move inside once a shot is attempted. Advantage: San Sebastian College

EXPERIENCE

The Olympians are back in the finals for the fourth straight year. The team first set its sight to be a final four contender, they never really thought that they will get the top spot after the quarterfinals for the third straight year. Ramon Mabayo and Darryl Mendoza carry tons of experience on how they can lift their squad and win it all. They say that in the finals the main men play more than usual and we will see how the big men of STI will score and defend and how the Baycats will adjust to what the Olympians will employ. Advantage: STI College

EXECUTION

In the first round, the Baycats surprised the Olympians and proved steadier in the end game. Unfortunately though, the Olympians got back at them and the Baycats muffed a lot of go ahead baskets in the final two minutes of play, they eventually lost by a point. Both teams believe that in a tight game you throw away all the stats and go to who is hot. Kris Lucernas delivered the marginal basket in the first game while William Vasallo killed the Baycats in the second. No one knows who will be taking that all important shot, but whoever does it will most probably be hailed as a school hero for a long time. Candidates for the Olympians are Mabayo, Mendoza together last game's hero William Vasallo while Ric Gracilas and Kris Lucernas will definitely take the big shot for the Baycats. Advantage: STI College

DEPTH

The Olympians beat the Sharks with Mike Cabangon scoring 26 points each time. In the final four, without Cabangon, the Olympians still prevailed without him. Look for Arnold Danganan, Jay Aranzaso and Oscar Crisostomo to play key roles in scoring and defending. On the other hand, the Baycats are all healthy and just like an assembly line play alike and if ever you are not missing anyone from their line up because if someone substitutes for another, the one coming in will give them the same energy and intensity to win. One key Olympian who will not play is Mike Cabangon whose high flying act will be missed by STI. Advantage: San Sebastian College

RESILIENCY

Adjusting to what the other team is employing is a very key factor in the series. The Olympians found out that they cannot match up with the faster and heftier guards of San Sebastian so they found other ways to get their points. The Baycats are very flexible since all their players can hit the outside shot. On the other hand, anyone can step up for the Olympians. When the Olympians are down they find ways to correct their earlier mistakes and come out stronger. Advantage: STI College

HUNGER

This is the third season that the Baycats are in the NAASCU and last year they were blown away by the Olympians enroute to their first NAASCU title. This season the Baycats are all business and are bent on getting their first crown. The question here is how badly do they want to win it - the answer is that the Baycats want it badly! In the end that might spell the difference on who will come out on top. Advantage: San Sebastian College

TEAMWORK

The Olympians have a tendency to play isolation offense while the Baycats move the ball well. They Baycats always finds the open man and they move the ball well. The Olympians on the other hand

Advantage: EVEN

PREDICTION: As seen, both teams are evenly matched, now if the series goes to three games, the experience of the Olympians will propel them to victory. SSC on the other hand must not give STI breathing room and end the series in two games right away. In all the finals matches of the NAASCU there has never been a game three. The odds definitely favor the Baycats but come championship time the Olympians will definitely come up with some surprises of their own.

OLYMPIANS TAKE GAME 1 OF BEST OF THREE SERIES

Oscar Crisostomo sank a cold blooded three pointer in the last 35.5 seconds to give the STI College Olympians its first taste of the lead and eventually the win as the Olympians eked out a 75-72 win to take game 1 of the best of three series of the 8th National Athletic Association of SChools Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) at the Makati COliseum. Crisostomo also sank the insurance basket as the Olympians shutdown the Baycats offense by limiting them to just two free throws and at the same time forcing them to 5 turnovers and five missed three pointers in the last 5 minutes.

At the start of the first quarter it looked like the San Sebastian Baycats would have a walk in the park as their three pointers were going in and their pressure defense was working wonders. The Baycats opened up a 26-11 first quarter lead which gave them enough breathing room as the Olympians missed 7 first quarter free throws. The Olympians worked hard to bring down the lead to seven points by the third quarter 59-52 as the Olympians went to their main man Ramon Mabayo.

The Olympians played without Norman Ihalas and Arnold Danganan who were thrown out in the game against Lyceum. Mike Cabangon, who turned 24 two weeks ago was also in the sidelines.

Game 2 is on thursday at 12:30 pm at the Makati Coliseum.

With their blowout win in Game 2 against the STI Olympians, the San Sebastian Cavite Bay Cats must be feeling rpetty good about themselves. They drew great scoring performances from their four best players: Lucernas, Alcasabas, Gracilla and Basa, all of whom waxed red hot from the perimeter and got our strong and fast on transition. Although they were not as tall as the Olympians, the Bay Cats went to their speed and shooting to take down the defending champions. Just as everyone was ready to give the back to back championship to STI, all of a sudden the upstart Bay Cats are being seen as a true contender and eventual champion. Their incredible athleticism across the board has more than made up for their relative lack of size. If they pull off this historic feat their prize might be to take on either UAAP champion Ateneo De Manila or NCAA champion San Beda College in the PCCL.

STI College was just four points away from catching up with the SSC Cavite Baycats, then Ramon Mabayo missed a free throw, unfortunately the rest of the team followed suit. If only the Olympians converted half of those, the fortunes of the Baycats would have changed. Unfortunately for the Olympians, you cannot win a ballgame if you miss 23 free throws.

Congrats to the SSC Cavite Baycats, you were simply amazing today in displaying your offensive firepower.
My hats off to Kris Lucernas and Raymond Alcasabas for playing superb games that negated the offensive outburst of Ramon Mabayo and the Olympians.

See you in July for the 9th NAASCU Season. We will be back...promiz

San Sebastian Cavite held on for the 86-77 win over STI College to claim the Season 8 NAASCU Basketball title. It is the first title of the Bay Cats in the centerpiece men's basketball tournament. "We waited four years to get this and it is a tremendous feeling to finally win the championship,"declared Fr Emil Jaruda, college president of San Sebastian Cavite. With a full show band, raucous students and staff, and even a number of friends from all over, the Bay Cats of head coach Edgar Macaraya hung tough in a game that did not see a double-digit lead for either side.

STI stayed toe to toe with San Sebastian all throughout the first half behind veterans forward Ramon Mabayo, center Darryl Mendoza and guard Norman Ihalas. But the second half was a different story as the Bay Cats went to their superior speed and shooting in the transition game. Forward Kris Lucernas, arguably one of the shortest and leanest men playing center anywhere in metropolitan basketball, controlled the boards for the Bay Cats to fuel the furious fastbreaks of Ray Alcasabas, Jay Gracilla and Ron Acain.

In the payoff fourth period the Olympians kept plugging away even as the Bay Cats were looking to bust the game open. It would still wind up a nip and tuck affair for the most part as Mabayo, Nonoy Crisostomo, Mac Macabasco, Ihalas and William Vasallo found second and third chance opportunities. Poor freethrow shooting eventually did in the Olympians though as Mabayo took three splits on three trips to the line with the Bay Cats up only 79-75. Steadier shooting at the line by Gracilla and Lucernas sealed the outcome.

This wrapped up a very successful basketball season for the NAASCU. "It was a well-played series, very exciting, and I commend both teams for giving us a good Finals," said Dr Jay Adalem, the NAASCU President.

STI stayed toe to toe with San Sebastian all throughout the first half behind veterans forward Ramon Mabayo, center Darryl Mendoza and guard Mike Ihalas.

Although San Sebastian Cavite had the lankiest big men in the league, they are very quick and agile to move around and grab rebounds with ease. The duo of Kris Lucernas and Mark Basa also had the talent of hitting the outside consistently while running the fastbreak as well.

If there was a Finals MVP, Lucernas should share this to Ray Alcasabas. His play reminds us of a somewhat kanto-style basketball but Alcasabas was unstoppable against STI, he was too quick that the Olympians had no other options to stop him and was very aggressive inside. The outside shooting he threw in their two wins also did wonders. He has a bit of weaknesses on his dribbling but his speed will be tested come the PCCL.

In the end, Baste Cavite was more prepared and were one step ahead of the Olympians in order to win the title, congratulations.

Nastrans is correct.
SSC Suddenly changed their style of play this year from a deliberate slow down style last year to a fast paced full court pressure style this year. Their run and jump defense did not work that much with the Olympians but their impeccable shooting was more than enough to bury STI.

Ray Alcasabas was a revelation in the finals and so was Mark Basa. The Olympians came prepared for Gracilla, Villareal and Lucernas which gave Alcasabas and Basa the chance to get open and score. Both players scored in double figures in their wins and when you have four to five players scoring in double figures that team is very hard to stop. In game 3, Darryl Mendoza had a hard time getting his rhythm after getting a bum stomach before the game.

WE hope the Baycats will do well in the PCCL coz a lot of theams dfont know their style of play and they can spring a lot of surprises. Good luck baycats

Dont know about that but in Game 2 the two had some choice words at each other in Game 2.

There was a bit of a little verbal exchange in Game 3 but nothing big. They did even made a customary handshake at the end too.

It happened in Game 2, both coaches were slapped with Technicals, If officials did not intervene I think the bashing of words could have resulted to physical altercation because both coaches were already going towards each other and are already in the middle of the court, pointing fingers at one another, and are ready to pounce when people intervene, but then again I may be exaggerating. =)
Fans riding on the situation even shouted “suntukan na!”, but were laughing shouting that. It really added more color and more excitement to the game and in the end it’s all just part of the game.

Okay
For the record, here is a biased account on the encounter.
Biased because only Coach Vic told me his side.
The reason he barked at Coach Egay was because he was challenging Macabasco to a fight

Coach VIc said, "Bakit mo hinahamon ng suntukan si Macabasco?"
Then Egay said "Kung gusto mo ikaw na lang!"

If you were asked like that in the heat of the game what would you do?

Anyway, I have always asked Coach Vic to keep his cool no matter what. Unfortunately for us we are human and sometimes in games we tend to get out of hand and express our feelings unethically.

That is why I dont sit at the STI bench, there must be someone who will mediate in incidents like this.

Yup first season nila sa NAASCU then he got into a fight with some player. Initially yata parang two years suspension si coach Egay kaya nagboboycott yung team sa mga scheduled games nila sa quarterfinals before naayos ng liga yung gusot.

I personally think that SSCR-C can go toe-to-toe with some of the Powerhouse teams in the PCC and can even surprise some of them, but, their lack of size can be a big factor if they face lets say a 6' 10" Slaughter or a 6'8 Al Hussaini in the post, and teams with good athletic players that can fair up with their speed in the guards position. The best chance they have is to keep the game close, hassle defense from start until the end, and finish the game with a sweet shooting jumper from Gracilla or Lucernas.

Consistent shooting would have to do it for SSCR-C if they want to advance even further. Chinito is right, the Baycats would be killed under the boards as Basa and Lucernas wont stand a chance against the aformentioned players, even Lucernas wont even have a strong luxury of attacking inside as well.

Did you mean the University of Luzon "Golden Tigers"? or is it the Lyceum Northwestern Univ "Dukes" that won the Region 2 Title?

The UL "Golden Tigers" is actually a perennial powerhouse team in our province, i lost track of their championship history but they really have a lot. But basing from the PCC website LNU "Dukes" dethrone them this year in the PRISAA, i really am not sure.

I just saw the website, it was the UL Golden Tigers again... hahaha

I'm hoping that next year the Urdaneta City Athletic Association base in Urdaneta City Pangasinan will also be registered in the SEC and BAP-SBP so they can also send their Champion and 1st runner up to this Region Qualifier, maybe there will be enough team to compete and probably dethrone the Golden Lions, but then again that will be a major upset and a mountain of a task!* :D :D :D*

Fast Facts:

There are also very competitive teams in the eastern part of Pangasinan like PUNP(formerly PCST), UEP(new university from binalonan), UCU(Urdaneta's own University) and LCST.

The UCAA* started as a collegiate invitation in 2004 where UCU(Urdaneta City University "Knights") became it's first invitational champion.

No invitational was held in 2005.

In 2006 UCAA had the support of all the Colleges and Universities in and around Urdaneta.
2006 crowned STI-Urdaneta "Stingers" as its first Champion.

2007 the Stingers archrival PCST (now PUNP) dethrone STI and became the 2nd Champion.

2008 This year it looks like PUNP (will be defending its title against new contenders UEP and LCST)

Go Pangasinan!

We would like to thank the National Athletic Association of Schools Colleges and Universities through their President Dr Ernesto Jay Adalem for giving Gameface the opportunity to work with their august organization in this eight NAASCU Season. Our centerpiece basketball tournaments were rousing successes, and we congratulate our newly crowned champions, the San Sebastian Cavite Bay Cats of Fr Emil Jaruda. San Sebastian Cavite honorably represented the NAASCU in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League, along with the St Clare College Saints and the STI College Olympians. We congratulate the University of Makati Pep Squad of Prof Sonny Maquiling for winning the cheer dance competition. We highly commend the various screening committees under Centro Escolar University's Prof Lotus Panganiban for all their hard work.

Our volleyball tournament is currently ongoing, and we shall have other sporting events by January of 2009 commencing competition as well. 2009 also marked the beginning of relationships with our season sponsors like Magnolia Beverages, Sunbolt Sports Drink, Picture City and Spark Plyo Sports courtesy of Mr Raul Banzon. With the cooperation of all the member schools, and the sterling leadership of Dr Adalem, the NAASCU looks well on its way to truly becoming a bigger and better varsity athletics association.

Gameface looks forward to a more meaningful and more fruitful relationship with the NAASCU in 2009 and truly the far future.
