JRU seems to be very busy this week. Game vs. ADMU last wed. Today vs. UE and Tomorrow vs. DLSU. :o

Do they have a Team B ? If it is their Team A that played kudos to them because they seem to fair well so far.

James Martinez was steady in the end nailing crucial freethrows as UE edged JRU 67-62 in FMC weekend action at the sweltering FEU Gym in Manila. With UE ahead 64-60 time down to under 40 seconds Martinez was fouled by Mark Cagoco then sank both freethrows to extend the Red Warrior lead to six. Marvin Hayes hit a short jumper in the ensuing Heavy Bombers offensive. UE hit one more freethrow to end the game.

Elmer Espiritu had a game-high 16 points while Jason Sena had 13 points and 10 rebounds for JRU.

Lyceum Calamba had three good players in 6-foot swingman Orly Mabait, 5'10" guard Jon Limpahan and 6'4" center-forward Mike Elamparo. These three kept Lyceum in the game at least up to the end of the first period before FEU's depth and size came to the fore and the Tams broke away by 30 points 53-23 near the end of the seconed quarter.

As far as I know hindi na kasama ang USTe sa Nike Summer League.

Nike should not have stuck to a daily schedule.

Fil-Oil plays Mondays and Wednesdays.

Fr Martin plays Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays.

The PBL plays Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. But this does not really conflict with the Thursday FMC since FMC features Team B's.

Nike committed the Team A's like Fil-Oil, so maybe they should have figured out a way around the schedule. Fil-Oil already had their schedule out early while every one in this site was still basically wondering if and when the Nike wold open.

batangueño
04-14-2008, 08:21 PM

In fairness to the schedule, not every game is scheduled for the seniors division but some days would have a full juniors or womens basketball games.

Speaking of the women, a couple of names stood out yesterday afternoon form non-UAAP schools: 5'8" forward April Lualhati of Lyceum and 5'3" guard Anna David of PUP. Both players showed good fundamentals and a keen understanding of the game. If any UAAP team wold be interested either of these two would make a fine addition to any UAAP women's lineup.

Lualhati has been stellar for Lyceum in the last few years, I think sometimes she is a bit overlook because of Machiko but she is effective.

Mga until 9:15 to 9:20 ako nandoon. Wala talagang taga-UE at taga-UP na lumitaw. Ang mga nasa court, mga FEU players (Kave was one of them) na nagpa-practice.

Ewan ko lang kung natuloy talaga yung UE vs UP game kanina o hindi given the fact that the NSL schedule is in conflict with the UP vs JRU Fil-Oil Game at The Arena in San Juan later at 12:00pm.

Meron ba talagang sumeseryoso sa NSL? Conflict talaga sa schedule ng ibang summer leagues such as Fil-Oil eh.

p.s.: Baka dumaan ako ulit sa FEU Gym mamaya to check things out. Baka sakaling natuloy yung UE vs UP game but I doubt it. ::)

The NSL organizers were making quick adjustments to the schedules because of the Fil-Oil, FMC, PBL, and even the Palarong Pambansa events.

As for the game, irereschedule siya siguro.

Dito na lumalabas ang problema sa scheduling ng games. Grabe, hindi kaya mahirapan ang mga players nito at halos araw-araw eh may laro ang teams. Baka magka injury na sila niyan pag napwersa katawan.

I may have just seen the best game of the entire Nike Summer League thus far this afternoon: Lasalle Greenhills beat defending UAAP champion Lasalle Zobel 71-70 on a shotclock-beating three-pointer from guard Mikey Reyes. It was a very very exciting game all throughout with both teams putting together runs and spurts and constant rallies and lead changes and shifts in momentum.

Mick Franco led the victors with 21 points while Gwyne Capacio led the other side with 21 points himself.

My personal best player of the game was Martin Reyes of LSGH who controlled the boards, defended all over the place, held the inside and passed very well from the post. I've never seen a kid with that kind of natural instincts and court intelligence in a long while. A lot of kids that age rely on 90% athletic ability. Reyes is an above-average to superior athlete with good length and overall size AND possesses incredible recognition. If he ever develops consistent shooting from the 18-foot range and picks up his handles he could stop growing now and be the next Larry Fonacier.

I'd bet he'd look a lot better in blue...

Id really like for him to move up and wear black instead of green. Sigh.

FEU-FERN schools Grace Christian
by JP Abcede

Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Educational Foundation wrecked Grace Christian High School, 84-39, for its third win in as many games in Nike Summer League juniors play on April 23 at the FEU Gymnasium.

Things were interesting at the start of the contest when Grace Christian blasted the gates with an 8-0 salvo. The Baby Tamaraws took the lead for good with a Russel Escoto one-handed tip in, 17-15, more than three minutes to go in the first quarter.

It was all FERN from there as they raced to a 41-26 count in halftime, tired out the seven GCHS players in uniform, and led by as much 37.

New hire FEU-FERN basketball head coach Horacio Lim said, “We started slow and hopefully we could correct our mistakes. Mahirap humabol against a good team.”

Escoto put on a show with a number of near dunks and a thundering one-hander to end the third period, finishing with a team-high 16 points. Michael Tolomia assisted with 15 markers, five dishes, and two steals, while Maverick Bautista ran about for 11 and five feeds.

“We are not after the win, but for the boys to learn the system,” Lim, who took the reigns of the Baby Tams last February, mentioned. “We hope to achieve our goal before the start of the UAAP.”

Kurt Chua and Kerwin Tiu both notched 13 points for the Tiong Lian member school.

In other games, Ateneo de Manila University clawed FEATI University, 79-30, in women's basketball.

Mariana Lopa had a field day with 21 points, all coming from beyond the arc. Samantha Ong and Treena Limgengco helped out with 14 and 12 markers, respectively. Patricia Tiu reached double digits in rebounds with ten.

No FEATI cagebelle reached the ten-point mark with Katherine Vicencio having the most with seven.

De La Salle University-Manila debuted with a win against fellow UAAP member National University, 42-32. Yinn Yamamoto had a double-double for the Lady Archers with 16 and 11, while Angeli Gioriani had 13 and eight.

Reajoice Ramos led NU with eight points.

Finally, Philippine College of Criminology spoiled College of Saint Benilde, 46-40. Jhoan Mesina was a rebound short of a double-double with 11 points, while Rosanna Russ was able to do so with ten and 15, nine coming from the offensive glass.

Leonette Salvacion had her usual load of 11 points and ten boards for the Lady Blazers.

Games on April 24 would feature four different NCAA teams attempting to keep a clean slate in the ongoing tournament. Jose Rizal University would go for four against University of Santo Tomas in juniors Group A at 830am, to be followed by Mapua Institute of Technology going against Emilio Aguinaldo College in seniors Group A. San Beda College-Manila would try to keep afloat against Philippine Maritime Institute at 1pm, while somebody has got to give between undefeated College of Saint Benilde and FEU at 530pm.

Far Eastern has a busy sched with the Lady Tamaraws suiting up against San Beda College-Alabang at 4pm. San Sebastian College Recoletos would try to recover from its embarrassing showing the first time out versus De Ocampo Memorial College at 230pm, and Metro Manila College and STI College-Sta. Rosa would battle for a better placing in seniors Group A.

Mapua survives past Emilio Aguinaldo
by Jonas Terrado

Mapua Institute of Technology grabbed a hold of a tightly-contested ballgame down the stretch to defeat Emilio Aguinaldo College, 75-69, in seniors’ competition of the 2008 Nike Summer League at the FEU gym in Manila last April 24.

The Cardinals took over with less than three minutes left in the contest thanks to an 8-0 blast to make a 65-64 deficit into a 72-65 edge with 1:42 left on a drive by Erwin Cornejo.

EAC, third-place finishers in both the UCAA and the NCRAA last season, threatened with 48.6 ticks to go after Roldan sank a basket off a poor shot by Argel Mendoza.

But the Intramuros-based squad sealed the game as Jason Pascual hit a right-elbow three as the shot clock expired with 15.5 in the clock to seal Mapua’s victory.

Despite a tough win, head coach Leo Isaac was disappointed with his team’s performance.

“Struggling sila (Mapua),” Isaac said. “Malayo sa expectations, buti na lang nanalo para makapagbuild ng confidence sa team.”

Allan Mangahas led the winners with 25 points, going a combined 10-for-16 from the floor with three of those coming the three-point range, while Cornejo added 14 points even as Mark Sarangay tallying 13 rebounds.

There were 10 lead changes in the final canto with Marc Roldan, who led EAC with 19 points, hitting the Generals’ last lead on a layup off a break with 3:59 left in the game.

Neil Pascual put Mapua in the lead for good, as he tipped in a missed shot for a 66-65 edge, 28 seconds later to finish with 10 points. Cornejo then scored Mapua’s four of six points in the next minute for a seven-point stretch.

Alain Musni added 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting for the Generals while Jeff Galang put in 11.

It was Musni who gave the UN Avenue-based team a good headstart, scoring four in the team’s 8-4 advantage in the opening three minutes of the match. But the Cardinals went on to take the first quarter, 23-21.

Meanwhile, Louie Philippe Vigil had 23 points, nine rebounds, and four steals while Keith Jasper Agovida tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals to lead Jose Rizal University to a 93-84 win over University of Santo Tomas High School in juniors play.

In the other seniors tilt, Metro Manila College scored their first win in the tournament by defeating STI-Sta Rosa, 79-65, led by Alexander Danao’s 22 points.

Tomorrow’s action will see juniors powerhouse De La Salle Zobel taking on Jose Abad Santos Memorial School in the curtain raiser, while the rest will be seniors matches that will see De La Salle University matching up with Metro Manila College, Nokia Pilipinas Youth Team battles Philippine Women’s University.

In the afternoon, San Beda College Alabang trade blows with Lyceum Calamba, National University in an affair with FEATI University, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta tackling Lyceum of the Philippines University, and Trinity University of Asia versus Don Bosco Technical College.

San Beda defuse PMI for second win
by Jonas Terrado

San Beda College took its second straight victory with a 90-80 tripping of Philippine Maritime Institute in the 2008 Nike Summer League seniors tilt at the FEU gym in Manila last April 24.

After a slim first half lead, the Red Lions took its biggest margin at 17 points to sink the Admirals further with a few minutes left in the fourth quarter.

PMI though mounted a late surge, outscoring San Beda 14-2 in the next four minutes to pull within 76-71, with Rocky Acidre scoring four of those late in that stretch.

But the Mendiola-based team sealed the contest as Garvo Lanete answered with a three-pointer with 3:09 left for a 79-71 spread before stopping several attempts by PMI in the end.

The win pushed San Beda's record to a 2-0 mark in Group B to take the early leaderboard while the Admirals fell to 0-2.

"Medyo tight kami sa schedule because of some preseason tournaments," said winning coach Frankie Lim. "I just tried to rest my starters while giving some exposure to the bench players."

Bam Gamalinda led the Red Lions with 15 points and four rebounds while Emeka Udo added 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks even as Lanete contributing 12 markers.

Julius de Guzman topscored for the Admirals with 26 points, four rebounds, and nine assists while Erwin Castillo scored 16 and grabbed seven boards.

A bloodied Castillo left the contest with 4:50 in the third quarter after receiving an elbow to the forehead off an Udo block his layup attempt, resulting to a massive cut.

Both teams battled to a close first quarter before the Red Lions led 18-13 as Udo scored the first six points for his squad before taking a 41-32 halftime advantage.

In other seniors’ results, Jimbo Aquino had 18 points and dished out nine assists as San Sebastian College-Recoletos defeated De Ocampo Memorial College, 74-58, while Far Eastern University subdued College of Saint Benilde, 63-52, behind 16 points from Jonathan Fernandez.

On the other hand, the Lady Tams of FEU scored the game’s first 33 points en route to a 93-13 destruction of San Beda College Alabang as Chovi Borja scored 17 points and recorded five steals.

RP Youth toys helpless PWU
by Jonas Terrado

Nokia Pilipinas Youth Team posted a win before going into a major international tilt, bombing Philippine Women’s University, 87-39, in the 2008 Nike Summer League seniors’ division at the FEU gym in Manila last April 25.

The junior men’s national team exploded in the second half after a slim first quarter margin and then raced to its biggest lead at 49 points during garbage time to bounce back from an setback last Sunday against Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

After a match tomorrow in the Philippine Basketball League and a pending April 29 affair with National University, RP Youth will fly to Malaysia next week to compete in the SEABA junior men’s championship.

“We just strengthen our philosophy on defense and also make good executions on our offense,” said RP Youth coach Franz Pumaren.

Joseph Marata, Joel Tolentino, and Norbert Torres had 10 points apiece to lead Nokia Pilipinas while Kyle Pascual grabbed eight rebounds.

The youthful RP five made a 16-4 run in seven minutes of the second quarter to make a 20-13 edge into a commanding 36-17 mark on a triple by Marata.

In the third period, the Patriots were held scoreless as RP Youth made a 19-0 blast in a seven-minute stretch for a 61-21 runaway on a Jed Manguera basket with 3:14 left.

Sundy Manlangit had a game-high 15 points to get along with his eight rebounds and two assists to parade PWU, who lost its third in a row.

It was a double-duty for Pumaren as he coached his De La Salle University to a convincing 72-45 demolition of Metro Manila College as Bader Malabas led the Green Archers with 11 points along with 10 from James Mangahas for their second win in the tournament.

Blaze, dont worry, only black or green lang ang pupuntahan ni martin reyes. The exodus of players outside of the lasalle system has now ended. ;)

Well, the exodus of Greenies was still evident in Ferdinand going to LS instead of CSB. Kala ko pa naman we would get a solid big man in him. Sana pag LSGH sa CSB nalang pupunta. Lugi kami kahit LSGH or Zobel sa DLSU parin pupunta. Kung meron mang samin latak nalang. Sana hindi na ganon. Sana those who wear black would still move up to wear black again.

*Black looks good. Looking good means no dandruff. MY name is Wayne. ;D

Lyceum goes 2-0 on NCAA teams; DBTC wins in OT
by JP Abcede

Lightning has struck twice so far for Lyceum of the Philippines University, beating another NCAA team, this time University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 67-66, for the Pirates' third conquest in seniors Group B of the 2008 Nike Summer League at the Far Eastern University Gymnasium on April 25.

Kris Aqualifull rebounded a Francis Abaya missed lay from the left corner, letting the ball roll in for a putback, 8.3 seconds in the clock, for the marginal basket, 67-63. This put into naught an Altas comeback in the final minutes of the game.

"Iyong play ang design ay first option for (Aqualifull)," narrated Lyceum head coach Bonnie Tan. However, things did not go as planned but the outcome was still the same. "Iyon talaga role niya, to get the follow up. Para sa kanya pa rin."

Daphne Lansang produced 16 points and six rebounds for LPU, while Victor Medina had 15.

On other hand, John Galabin fired 7/11 from outside to finish with 23 points for UPHDS. Ronald Reyes had a statline of 11, five rebounds, and four assists, while Rommel Balboa fouled out with six markers, 12 boards, six feeds, two steals, four blocks, and five turnovers.

This makes Lyceum in solo first in its group at 3-0, while Perps fell to 1-2.

In the other games, it reigned cat and dogs with occasional downpour hitting outside.

Don Bosco Technical College took a thriller of a contest against CUSA member Trinity University of Asia, 92-89, in extra period.

Uriel Lim cannoned a three-pointer from the left-hand corner to send the game into overtime. The Greywolves then milked the clock for nearly one and a half minutes, grabbing three offensive glasses before Thomas Cajulis layed one in to seal the count with less than a half minute to go in the match.

Louie Villarama wolfed down 23 points on 5/8 three-point shooting, 13 caroms, five dishes, and four cookies. Cajulis also had a double-double with 17 and ten with Bjorn Casibang making 12 for Don Bosco.

Five Trinity players finished in double digits.

National University had a dog day afternoon, derailing FEATI University, 80-53, for its second win in three games. Cris Catamora and Aaron Galapon were the alpha Bulldogs with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Erickson Gatchalian singlehandedly lifted FEATI with 26 markers.

San Beda College-Alabang was catty against Lyceum Institute of Technology, 78-73, in a battle of the south.

John Michael Ferrer had a 25-point and eight-rebound output for the Red Lions. John Tuliao helped out with 17 and and eight.

Mark Angelo Elamparo had 13 points, 12 rebounds, and three deflections, while Loreto Anacan Jr. also had 13. Paolo Mitchelle Arevalo, Pol Brian Limpahan, and Ivan Limpahan rounded up the double figure scorers for LIT in a ladder-like 12, 11, and ten performance.

Two NCAA teams would go for their third wins in as many games in the April 26 schedule. SBC-Manila would try its luck against housemate San Sebastian College Recoletos in seniors Group B at 1pm, while UPHDS would knock on the doghouse of NU in juniors Group B at 530pm.

Adamson University would play a back-to-back with the Lady Falcons in a catfight against Emilio Aguinaldo College at 830am, to be followed by the Baby Falcons against debuting Malayan High School of Science at 10am. Nokia-Pilipinas Youth would try on the ladies of College of Saint Benilde for size at 230pm.

Jesus is Lord College Foundation would attempt for win number three versus Notre Dame of Greater Manila at 1130am and Informatics would try to do the same against Don Bosco Technical Institute at 4pm.

EAC survives past STI-Sta Rosa
by Jonas Terrado

Emilio Aguinaldo College staved off a resilient challenge by STI-Sta Rosa to prevail 67-60 in seniors’ action as the 2008 Nike Summer League celebrates Labor Day at the FEU gym in Manila.

The Generals were up for the whole duration of the second half but had to prevent several rallies made by the Olympians to grab their second win in three matches played.

With the Laguna-based squad pulling behind 56-54 with 3:31 remaining, Romeo Fotue scored four free throws before Mark Roldan and Lowell Yaya converted off two STI turnovers for a seven-point cushion, 63-56, with 1:54 to go.

But STI-Sta Rosa mounted a last-gasp comeback as Winston Balmaceda scored two straight baskets for a 63-60 deficit, only for Fotue to seal the the UN Avenue-based team’s win on a three-pointer with 20.8 ticks for the final score.

“It’s a tendency for my team to go into the level of teams that are par below than us,” said head coach Nomar Isla. “My starting five did not play well and our big men didn’t match well against their quickness (STI-Sta Rosa), but hopefully we can play better in our next game.”

EAC is slated to meet Adamson University, who currently holds a 3-0 record, on May 8.

Jeff Galang finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead EAC while Argel Mendoza and Fotue banked in 11 points apiece.

EAC build a 7-0 run in the last 1:41 off the second period as Galang scored two fastbreak layups to led 33-28 at halftime. In the second half, they made their biggest lead of the ballgame at nine, 40-31, as Galang scored a putback at the 7:54 mark.

But Ritchie Garing made a three-pointer to start the final canto as STI-Sta Rosa trailed 48-46 with 9:50 remaining, but the Generals still led 56-50 at the halfway point off a Fotue layup.

The tiny Balmaceda led the Olympians with 19 points and four assists while hitting four three-pointers. John Martin Batisan scored 13 while Garing put on 11 markers and recorded eight assists to fell to 1-4.

In other results, Polytechnic University of the Philippines surprised fellow state-owned University of the Philippines in an all-Maroon matchup, 75-70, to spice up the curtain raiser.

Gener Porio topscored for the Sta Mesa-based squad with 22 points and dished out seven assists while Gerald Taguinod backstopped PUP by scoring 17 and grabbed five rebounds to take their first victory in four outings.

Mike Silungan hit four triples for a team-high 21 points even as Julius Wong scored 10 but was not enough for the Diliman-based team to fell to 1-2 after three contests.

On the other hand, Mapua Institute of Technology rose to its fourth consecutive victory in as many outings by dumping Metro Manila College, 90-40, as Ian Mazo had 16 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Neil Pascual drained 10 markers.

Benito Scott led the defeated Bisons with 14 points to slip to 2-4 on their campaign.

PMI pulls Labor Day shocker on Baste
by Jonas Terrado

Long range bombs were nailed when needed as Philippine Maritime Institute scored a 74-70 upset of San Sebastian College-Recoletos in an afternoon game of the 2008 Nike Summer League seniors division at the FEU gym in Manila on Labor Day.

The Admirals trailed early in the final canto but went on a shooting tear to surprise a shorthanded Stags and win their second outing in five matches.

Down 64-57 with 8:26 to go in the contest, Aldrin Funa drained two straight triples while Rodel Bagayan sank a three of his own before Funa bombed another outside shot that wrapped a 13-2 run for a 70-66 PMI advantage with 3:00 on the clock.

A baseline layup by Vergel Zulueta cut Baste’s deficit to a point, 70-69, with 58.2 seconds remaining but Bagayan answered with a double pump basket inside for a three-point margin, 72-69, with 34.1 ticks left.

The Stags have a chance to tie the game but missed several triples down the stretch that decided the outcome.

Funa, who drained all of his four triples in the fourth period, finished with 18 points but was led by 22 points and 10 assists of Julius de Guzman and Bagayan’s 15 points and 11 rebounds.

“Gigil na gigil ang mga bata na tumalo ng mga malalakas na team,” quirked winning coach Dado Santiago. “Nung dehado kami sa kanila (SSC-R), sabi ko lang tumira tayo sa labas at limit lang natin yung mga fastbreak nila.”

PMI made 12-for-45 threes in the contests, five of which came from de Guzman, while making 21 second chance points in the win.

The Stags trailed 51-50 in the third period but made an 8-3 advantage in the last three minutes as Anthony Bringas scored four while Dave Najorda converted off a quick inbound for a 58-54 edge at the end of the third period.

Najorda finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Franz Delgado scored 13 as SSC-R, who played without head coach Jorge Gallent, top scorer Jim Viray and big man Jason Ballesteros because of their respective PBL matches in Cavite, fell to 1-3.

In the other game, Lyceum of the Philippines University rolled to its fourth consecutive victory with an 87-50 decking of De La Salle-Lipa in seniors competition.

Micky Haldos and Rich Guerrara each recorded 13 points for the Pirates, who only trailed once at 3-0 before mounting a 23-10 first quarter lead.

The win kept the Intramuros-based squad atop Group B, tied for first with idle San Beda College, who sports a 3-0 win-loss card.

College of Saint Benilde and FEATI University engage in a lone morning game tomorrow in the women’s division at 11:30 am while University of the East and Adamson University meets in the same division at 4:00 pm.

The rest will be in the juniors division, as University of Santo Tomas High School battles hapless Jose Abad Santos Memorial School at 1:00 pm, Don Bosco Technical College meets Philippine College of Criminology at 2:30 pm, and Adamson tackles Perpetual Help in the final game at 5:30 pm.

What the heck is the world going up to, when schools like Philippine Maritime Institute (PMI) end up beating NCAA teams like the San Sebastian College (SSC), & Polytechnic University of the Philipppines (PUP) beating UAAP teams like the University of the Philippines (UP)?

Kidding aside, this just goes to show, that UAAP or NCAA teams can't afford to take any team out there for granted.

Speaking of Baste, I'm quite impressed with Dave Najorda, reminds me of his brother although he does lack a bit but still servicable on the cut.

And yes, having Viray out there earlier was a loss, Ballesteros could have been a presence against the PMI frontline but the Stags really lost it when PMI drained triple after triple.

I guess that explains it.* Viray & Ballesteros seem to be the top Stags this coming season.

As for the fatigue factor, yes, UP & SSC-R did play against each other in the Fil-Oil tournament just a day or so before their next games in the NSL.* It seems that fatigue really has come into play w/ most of the teams, playing in 2 separate leagues over the summer.* This will likely mean that it won't happen again next season, w/ teams opting to play in just either of the leagues (if they push thru) rather than in both of them.

They Play differently, leo plays the 3 spot, while dave plays 4 or 5. Dave has a better pump fake but lacks shooting touch. pero sabi nga ni coach berns (mercado) may namana daw si DJ(dave jay) sa utol nya un pimples nga lang. ;D

^Leo Najorda plays the 4-spot (power forward) during his college days at San Sebastian. Ayan ang natural position niya sa kolehiyo noon. When he turned pro, he was moved to the 3-spot (small forward) because of his quickness and good perimeter shooting.

Ateneo won big time over Trinity College kanina. Hindi na namin nakita ang lamang or ang final score kasi umalis na rin kami at alam na namain Ateneo na panalo.

Anyway, valiant effort by Trinity to hang in the game despite being outnumbered by Ateneo. Seven players lang naglaro sa team and despite the disparity in manpower, nagawa pa nila lamangan Ateneo in the early stages of the first period.

* * *
Nagbuhos si Remia Buenacosa ng 22 points at nagdag-dag si Marichu Bacaro ng 18 at sumandal ang Tigresses sa near-perfect second quarter upang pataubin ang Univer-sity of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons 61-49.
* * *
* * *
Habang bumagsak ang UP sa 4-1 sa standings, ang UST ay umangat sa 3-0 record.
* * *

* * *

RP Youth joins Nike Summer League (http://manilatimes.net/national/2008/may/07/yehey/sports/20080507spo6.html)
Wednesday, May 07, 2008
http://manilatimes.net

COMING off a successful stint in the 7th Southeast Asian Basketball Association junior championship, the Nokia-RP Youth team gets back to business by resuming its campaign in the 2008 Nike Summer League.

The young Filipinos already played two games in the country’s biggest cage tournament every summer prior to their trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the qualifying event of the Asian Youth Championship in Tehran, Iran this September.

As expected, the team mentored by coach Franz Pumaren completed a four-game sweep of the meet to emerge champion and earn the right to represent the Southeast Asian region to the Asian cagefest together with runnerup Malaysia.

Officials of Nike naturally are elated with the success of the team it currently sponsors along with the RP women’s squad.

“Yes, we’re very happy to have the RP Youth team back this week [in the Nike Summer League] and even happierwith their success in Malaysia,” said Nike Phils. public relations manager Mae Dichupa in Tuesday’s PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch. She was accompanied by Nike Phils. sports marketing executive Tony Atayde.

“They have a few more games to play in their group, so it should be interesting to see how they perform against the other teams,” added Dichupa, who was accompanied by sports marketing executive Tony Atayde. in the session sponsored by Shakey’s, the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation, Accel, Brickroad gym, Aspen spa and MedCentral Medical Clinics and Diagnostic Center.

The RP 5 is bracketed in Group D of the league featuring 77 teams playing in the seniors, juniors and women’s divisions. It currently carries an even 1-1 card and will have Feati University for its next game on Thursday.

Staglets win (http://www.mb.com.ph/SPRT20080507123900.html)

San Sebastian wasted no time proving it still has the best juniors program in the country by coasting to another easy win in the Nike Summer League basketball tournament Monday at the Far Eastern University Gym in Morayta, Manila.

Almond Vosotros scored 23 points and senior Arvie Bringas had 12 to lead the Staglets to a 76-52 conquest of the Adamson Baby Falcons. It was the NCAA juniors champions’ second win in as many outings and one of a handful of routs in the NSL Monday.

Also, Letran dumped Grace Christian High School, 106-50, and Jesus Is Lord Foundation (JILF), a surprisingly hot team in the tournament, routed Informatics 76-55.

The Chiang Kai Shek-Don Bosco Makati game was close though, with CKSC winning 68-65.

Letran never gave its opponents a chance in the game, racing to a 33-19 lead after the first quarter in the yawner. Glenn Khobuntin was the game’s best player with 32 points, 11 rebounds and six steals. The Squires upped their record to 2-1 in Group D

ABS-CBN Sports will feature weekly highlights of the Nike Summer League beginning May 17 on Studio 23 and cover the live games starting on June 5 when the tournament moves up to the quarterfinals.

Does anybody know when the ADMU vs. RP Youth game will take place? It was supposed to be held last April 16 but was postponed due to a conflict with an ADMU game held in the Flying V-Fil-Oil Cup that same day.

Also consider that the ADMU team will leave for their US training early next week. Will they just simply forfeit the game considering ADMU has, I presume, already accumulated enough wins to bring them to the next round of the Nike tournament?

Jose Rizal nips Benilde
by Jonas Terrado

A strong second half performance put Jose Rizal University out of the tight start to secure a 68-60 nipping of fellow NCAA member College of Saint Benilde in the only scheduled morning game of the 2008 Nike Summer League seniors divisions at the FEU gym in Manila last May 13.

The Heavy Bombers put a stifling defense on the Blazers to lead by double-figures for almost the whole duration of the second half en route to the win and improved their standing to a 3-3 win-loss card.

JRU, however, is in fourth place and appears to be out of contention for a slot in the quarterfinals with unbeaten Group C leaders FEU, University of the East, and the third-place Blazers, who dropped to a 3-2 mark, in front.

An 8-0 run in the last 2:30 of the second quarter gave the Mandaluyong-based squad the lead at halftime, 33-28, capped off by a running fade away shot by Ildefonso Bulangis with 13 ticks left.

In the middle portion of the third, John Wilson hit five points while Raycon Kabigting put up seven markers, including a triple that made it a 50-35 spread with 1:34 in the said period for their biggest margin of the day.

It was the frontline of James Sena and Jayson Nocom who led the Heavy Bombers. Sena recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while Nocom contributed a double-double by scoring 10 and grabbing 10 boards on 5-for-6 shooting as both schooled CSB in the paint with their inside presence.

"We have been struggling lately because most of our players are in the PBL at ngayon lang naging buo 'yung team," quoted JRU head coach Ariel Vanguardia. "Hopefully, ngayon mag-gel yung mga veterans at mga bagong players sa team."

The Blazers matched up well with the Heavy Bombers after a 6-0 start while lanky Archimedes David fired three shots from the three-point range as the Taft-based team nailed five triples in the first half.

But Saint Benilde, who was mentored by assistant Richard del Rosario in absence of head coach Gee Abanilla, made just two shots from beyond the arc since and was held to just 13 points in the third canto to trail 54-41.

"We gave them (CSB) a lot of outside shots in the first half," Vanguardia remarked. "Ginawa namin sa second half, dinikitan namin yung mga shooters nila at nacontain naman sila."

David topscored for the black and green squad with 15 points and eight rebounds while Garri Sevilla added 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Point guard Anjelo Monteclaro put in nine points along with six assists in a reserve role.

The closest effort for the Blazers to come back was at 37-33 as Sevilla hit a three with 7:56 to go only for them to score just two points the next six minutes to fall behind by a large margin in the third quarter.

"Benilde is a rebuilding team but they are also dangerous, we cannot take them lightly," said Vanguardia, who had seven markers from K abigting with Wilson adding six markers alongside Maui Pradas, who bankrolled two threes in the game.

The Heavy Bombers wrapped up their campaign on Friday against Polytechnic University of the Philippines while Benilde meets University of the Philippines in the curtain raiser on the same day.

The BIS Tigersharks nipped NBTC this morning, 84-82 (not sure).

De Chavez displayed his great dribbling and passing skills together with his good outside shooting. He was toying with all guards thrown at him. JAvellonar and Daquioag ably supported him.

Paredes led NBTC with his post presence, grabbing rebounds and blocking or altering shots. Honorable mention goes to #14 who hit some outside shots.

Lasalle played without mainstays JV Casio, as well as foreign-born players Bader Malabes and Marko Batricevic and rookie LA Revilla. They made do with Simon Atkins as their lone pointguard for the game, with Rejan Lee and Hiram Bagatsing seeing spot duty at the point. They actually did well in the first half even with Lee and Bagatsing at the point over several stretches. James Mangahas also played some point forward. But the lack of a point other than Atkins proved critical in the second half as Adamson went to its superior athleticism and size to play straight matchup ball against Lasalle. Lasalle's best hope was to try and orchestrate their patented halfcourt sets featuring the backdoor and the multiple screens and cutters. Without help at the point though it was tough.

UE was of course unstoppable against PUP. Pari Llagas and Val Acuna instigated a second quarter breakaway that saw UE go up 39-19 and the Red Warriors never looked back. It was so easy for the Warriors that the fourth quarter featured Ken Acibar, Erwin Duran and newcomer Jairold Flores going up against the PUP veterans even as UE held leads of 28-30 points.

Sobrang bummer talga. Kala ko pa naman magiging ok performance ng Blazers after winning against Letran and SSC-R sa Filoil. Turns out di nila ma-replicate yun dito sa Nike. Yung games na akala natin kayang ipanalo ng CSB(like JRU and UP) naitalo pala nila. Oh well. :-[

MANILA, Philippines - De La Salle-Greenhills Greenies earned their quarterfinal spot in the juniors division of the Nike Summer League basketball tournament by winning over the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 88-81, on Wednesday at the Far Eastern University (FEU) gym.

Martin Reyes poured in 26 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for the Greenies who came back from a nine-point deficit to win the one-game playoff, according to a statement issued by the league on Thursday.

The Greenies and the Light Bombers finished with identical 5-1 records after the group stages, requiring them to break the deadlock through a one-game playoff.

Keith Agovida was a the helm of JRU's offense, posting 35 points and 13 rebounds.

In another juniors game, Benedictine International School dominated FEU-Fern 92-72.

Because of the Benedictine's win, a four-way tie is in the offing: If FEU-Fern wins over the RP Youth Team in its last game, the Baby Tams will be tied with Benedictine, Letran, and San Beda-Alabang – all of them with 4-2 cards.

In the women's division, the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons finished the group stage with a 59-55 win against the Lyceum Lady Pirates.

The victory assured UP (7-2) of a quarterfinals spot, along with like Adamson (7-0) in Group B. - GMANews.TV

good game by both teams... si coach naglalaro ng apoy - ayun, napaso! hahahaha

as for UE- medyo malabo sa power forward position... lalamunin ng FEU and USt itong UE kapag ganun ang laro nila sa UAAP.

Ewan ko lang ha but Pari Llagas did well against Sam Ekwe and the Red Lions frontline.

If it wasnt for the two miscues committed by San Beda, they would have won.

Kudos to both teams for treating us to a great game!

Times are very different now and there's no such thing as a comfortable lead anymore. Before a 18pt lead by the 4th quarter is a safe margin but now no more. Against a proud team, like San Beda, there's no room for complacency and we've seen it today. For a moment, i thought ue would choke again with the great collapse in the 4th quarter... well, lady luck was on their side today as the breaks of the game made them win the game.

In a way, I was impressed more with San Beda and although they did not win the game, they were the real winners in my opinion and I smell a 3-peat come NCAA Season.

OT: During breaktime (yosi time outside rmc), i could not help but hear the conversations of the bedans about the recent news in their backyard. ;D

3rd Q. FEU leading by 14 against Lyceum

Dark Knight

Bad form by Lyceum. With 3 minutes remaining, a certain Santiago punched Fernandez at the forehead and Llansang pushed Ramos behind his back. Good thing Fernandez didnt react or else he might be suspended in their semis match against UE. Aldrech reacted but was pacified immediately but not being elbowed first by another Pirate.

FEU actually lead by 23 in the first half but the Pirates slowly inched their way back to the game even tying the score. But a 5 minute drought by Lyceum probably ended in frustration thus the unnecessary fracas.

3 Pirates were thrown out. Santiago, Llansang and another 1. Dont know their names because they are a bunch of nobody's to me. :D

Kave was thrown out and might be suspended for entering the playing court.

Good form by FEU. At first, i want the whole Tams to retaliate but good thing they preserved their manners and they thought of the implications that may come when they face UE.

Lyceum are really pirates eh? :P

They should play at Inter Barangay Liga along with out of school youths.

Nakakahiya naman para sa Lyceum, minsan na nga lang mapalabas game nila sa TV eh makikipagaway pa sa huli, at sa harap pa ng athletic director nila na si Tanny Gonzales.

2008 NSL - ADMU vs. MIT

Got to watch the game between the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles and the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) Cardinals over at the 2008 NSL at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum (Sunday, June 8,2008)

The Game Proper
The game was close the 1st 2 quarters, I think mainly because Chris Tiu did not play for the Blue Eagles, and that ADMU Coach Norman Black took time to give most of his rookies a lot of playing time.*

Mapua kept the game close in the end game thru the efforts of guys like Neil Pascual and Kevin Dela Pena, but veterans like Nonoy Baclao and Rabeh Al-Husseini delivered at the clutch to seal a win by ADMU.*

The ADMU Blue Eagles
Nonoy Baclao had a monster game, grabbing rebounds and almost scoring at will against the shorter and/or less athletic Mapua frontline.* Rabeh Al-Husseini delivered crucial points at crunch time while Eric Salamat filled in on offense for Chris Tiu.

Justin Chua had a terrible game despite getting major minutes.* He was missing shots, wasn't grabbing any rebounds, basically just getting manhandled by Mapua's veteran frontline.* Just when we thought why Coach Norman didn't give him a lot of playing time in their previous day's game against the Green Archers, he shows us why.* Clearly Justin will take some time to get his game going in college.

Nico Salva also had good playing time, but in the first half I saw him get blocked at least 3 times by Mapua's defense on his drives to the basket.* He was able to come back and score some points in the 2nd half off some drives, but again another rookie struggling in college.* As expected, more or less.

Miserable game also for Kirk Long, got stolen off twice and causing an unforced error in the end game when Mapua went into its full court press.* I've never really been a big fan of Kirk, about the only good thing I see in his game is that daredevil, off balanced shot he makes every now and then when he drives.* He is a tall Point-Guard, but his ballhandling is suspect (as can be seen above), and so is his outside shooting.* He's also just an average passer.* After a season with the Eagles, he is still struggling to find his place with the team, and one wonders if he will ever find it there.

The MIT Cardinals
I came out of this game having a healthy respect for Kevin De La Pena's defensive skills.* KDLP is tall, has a muscled, medium build, and good quickness.* He simply was all over the Eagle's star rookie Ryan Buenafe, so much so that Ryan was only able to score a lone 3-point shot off him.* He couldn't drive well w/ KDLP bodying up on him, and was only able to get the bulk of his points after KDLP got sidelined courtesy of Nonoy Baclao's elbow causing a nasty mouse under his right eye.* With a little bit more offense, his defense could be one thing KDLP could bring with him to the PBA, if and when he gets drafted later.

Neil Pascual is a short Power Forward.* He is stocky, but his best asset is his work ethic, always following up his outside shots for a possible rebound.* He did have a decent outside shot, and good drive in moves as well.* In the end, though, his lack of size wasn't able to stop ADMU's taller frontline from scoring at will when needed.

One reason I watched this game because I wanted to see Allen Mangahas play since he had been playing well lately.* Kinda lean, his best asset is probably his outside shot.* He wasn't a factor most of the game, but was able to drain 2 3-point shots in the end game to help Mapua keep a close game with the Eagles.

Parting Shot
Surprisingly spirited game by MIT, keeping up with ADMU most of the game and coming close to beating them.* They have a respectable team out there, with a pretty good full-court press in the end game.

ADMU on the other hand got to have their rookies get more playing time against veteran opposition, with the veterans exerting just enough effort at the clutch to win the game.*

i watched the game last Sunday.

sinapak ng isang taga Lyceum si Frenandez ng FEU.
nakakatuwa kasi after the sapakan, sumugod lahat ng Lyceum players and nagkagulo talaga.
nakakatuwa dahil di na maawat ng referee ang mga players.
Ang saya talaga.

As we know, it's never funny until somebody gets hurt. :D
