Following the success of Cebu’s staging of the National Students Basketball Championship (NSBC), the city is poised to host another collegiate affair with the Pichay Cup, slated this April.

This was divulged by Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) Visayas head and basketball patron Lorenzo “Chao” Sy immediately after the championship game of the NSBC last Saturday.

According to Sy, the tournament is tagged after BAP president Prospero Pichay and will have three of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines’ (UAAP) top teams to do battle against the best local collegiate squads including the newly crowned NSBC champions Southwestern University (SWU) and the seven-time Cesafi titlists and NSBC runners-up University of the Visayas (UV).

The other Cebu squad is NSBC third placer and two-time Cesafi runner-up University of San Carlos Warriors.

The three teams will do their best to stand up to the reigning UAAP champions, De La Salle University Green Archers, 2007 UAAP runners-up University of the East Red Warriors and 2005 champions Far Eastern University Tamaraws.

Sy also added that a sizable cash prize will be awarded to the champion although they have yet to determine the final details. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio

Teka, this I have to check. Parang wala akong alam na sasali La Salle dito. Mukhang press release in the making yan ah.

Just because Pichay was able to get the participation of Cebu teams in the last tournament he organized, 'ayan, mag o organize na naman ng liga sa Cebu.'

Pichay is a person of CONSIDERABLE FINANCIAL RESOURCES, as evidenced by the no. of very expensive commercials he aired during his run for the last Senatorial elections.

As for UV's President, 'ano, magdadahilan na naman siya na hindi niya ma hindi an, dahil sa Cebu ginawa yung liga?'

Hinid naman siguro magpapapaloko ang mga Gullas sa ganyang pakana.

The Nationals organized by the BAP holds great significance for the Gullas. UV was the first non-Manila school to have won it and they have repeated the feat a few more times since then. That it was held in Cebu gave them an "excuse" to participate. Even if it were held at another place, I am sure there will be the "desire and intent" on their part to compete, but that would give them an "excuse" to decline.

One must take note that the Gullas are in good terms with every basketball faction in Cebu. Walang kalaban ang mga iyan, even to those allied with the disgraced BAP. Kaya mahirap para sa kanila tanggihan ang BAP-Nationals aside from the historical significance of the event to the Gullas.

Pero sa bagong pakulo ni Pichay, I doubt if the Gullas will give the team management the discretion to participate. Malinaw na ginagamit na sila nyan.

* * *EATING too much pechay can cause a build-up of uric acid in the body, thus leading to gout and other ailments . . . not good! :'(
