MVP up for 2nd term in cage body
Thursday, February 21, 2008

Chances are BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan would be reelected by acclamation in April or keep the position with no election at all.

This was the consensus among SBP area and regional directors who attended a meeting with Pangilinan in Astoria in Ortigas Complex Tuesday.

It was actually a conference where the national federation and its regional chapters presented their programs. Philippine Olympic Committee board chairman Robert Aventajado was also present to discuss the component of basketball in the Philippine Olympic Festival.

But talks about politics in the sidelines just couldn’t be avoided with the SBP by-laws calling on the federation to hold an election of officers by the end of April.

A federation insider said majority of the membership is satisfied with the leadership and programs of Pangilinan that they intend to reelect him by acclamation.

On former Congressman Butch Pichay’s pronouncement that he’s running for the SBP presidency, one SBP board trustee said there may never be an election in April.

“I’ll bet that we don’t hold an election this year but in the next Olympic year in 2012. We can do that under our by-laws,” said the board trustee, who didn’t want to be identified.

“I was among the framers of our constitution. Only the board can call an election. The spirit of a certain provision in our constitution is for the board to call an election when everything is already normal in the federation. But the federation is still in a transition period,” the trustee added.

SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio said Pangilinan has expressed his desire to stay on as president and continue programs he’s laid down for the federation.

“He’s very passionate with his vision,” said Gregorio of Pangilinan.

Pangilinan discussed the National Youth Training Center (NYTC) to highlight his presentation during the meeting. The NYTC has an end goal of bringing the Philippines back in the Olympics in London in 2012.

The five SBP super areas presented their respective programs. They’ve got tremendous boost with Pangilinan committing to give them a seed money of P100,000 each.

“Under the SBP by-laws, the regional federations should be self-sufficient and self-reliant. Mr. MVP is giving personal money totaling P.5 million as their seed funds. Mr. MVP’s request is for the regional federations to make good use of the money, make the money grow,” said Gregorio. – Nelson Beltran

Base on the above report, the SBP is and will continue to operate in "transition period" and is well within its own laws not to call for an election anytime soon.

Well, if only to "kill" the old BAP structure, that is very agreeable.

I seriously doubt Graham Lim and his cohorts can sustain what they are doing until 2012. But we should expect that if an election is not called as expected by Lim and Pichay, the BAP will contest that non-call for elections.

But it is apparent, the SBP doesn't want an election this soon.

Takot? ::)

Alvarez quits post in BAP-SBP board (http://philstar.com/index.php?Sports&p=49&type=2&sec=30&aid=20080401118)

Air21 president Lito Alvarez resigned Monday as member of the 25-man BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas board of trustees, four days before the board convenes to tackle the issue of membership of the national cage body.

Alvarez, a BAP-nominated trustee, mentioned heavy load of work in their business as the reason for his resignation.

Observers, however, believed there were other reasons like being caught in the middle of an expected big conflict in the SBP board meeting Friday.

Alvarez is a BAP official who has friends and business partners in Pilipinas Basketball (PB). SBP president Manny Pangilinan, for one, is among Alvarez’s co-owners of Burger King.

The SBP board is composed of 12 trustees each from the BAP and PB. The 25th slot belongs to Pangilinan.

Membership committee chairman Ely Capacio is set to announce Friday the cage organizations which passed the screening for membership.

Pending is membership validation for no less than 88 organizations – 66 from the BAP and 22 from PB.

A reliable source, however, said Capacio would nominate for board approval only about 40 groups which passed the criteria set during the Tokyo accord. – Nelson Beltran
