CIE upends CEC in Hapee Online Challenge
Friday, February 15, 2008

The Centre of International Education (CIE) pulled a 70-61 win against Cebu Eastern College during their game in the 1st Hapee Online Challenge Cup 17 age category at CEC Gym.

CIE relied on the inside game of twin towers Kirby Cabrera and Jerik Gomez. The 16-year old* Cabrera scored 28 points and hauled down 14 rebounds and conspired with Gomez for an 18-3 second quarter run to give CIE a big 41-26 advantage.

CEC tried to come back in the second half but the closest they could manage was at 50-41 early in the fourth period.

The loss was heartbreaking for CEC who tied the count a 23-all early in the second quarter after applying a full court press. Sensing trouble, CIE called for timeout then fielded Cabrera and Gomez and completely controlled the game.

For his heroics, Cabrera bagged the “Best Dewfoam of the Game” award.

In another development, the games scheduled today were moved on February 20 due to unavailability of the CEC gym.

The Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J) and St. Alphonsus Catholic School (SACS) of Lapu-Lapu City scored contrasting wins in the Hapee Online Challenge Cup basketball tournament at the Guadalupe Sports Complex.

In the Under-17 category, the SHS-J Eagles rode on the heroics of flashy guard Kyle Edwin Valmoria to outsmart the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Hoop It Up, 65-57, while SACS proved too hot to handle for the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 63-37, to reach the 12-under semifinal round.

Valmoria was almost hitting from all angles to pace the Eagles with 25 points. Defense was the other factor of SHS-J’s resounding triumph as they limited CIT’s scoring machine Clyven Nebron Limalima to only 14 points. The credit goes to SHS-J’s defensive gem Jomari Dinsay.

Hapee Online shots down SHS-J Eagles

The Hapee Online Camp overwhelmed the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J) Blue Eagles, 87-66, in the Hapee Online Basketball Basketball League 2nd Challenge Cup at the Guadalupe Sports Complex.

The Training Specialists employed a stifling trapping defense from the opening tip-off to take early control of the game with a 21-point first quarter lead.

Hapee’s flashy pointguard Mark Jayven Tallo showed his leadership as they kept on protecting a big lead but all of a sudden, the Blue Eagles rallied in the third period behind the heroics of diminutive point guard and defensive specialist Jomari Dinsay to close the gap down to just three points, 52-55.

Sensing danger, the Training Specialists again applied their vaunted pressure defense to choke the Blue Eagles and force them into a spate of costly errors.

Tallo, a member of the CESAFI Mythical Team, led the Training Specialists with 23 points, most of them on penetrating drives aside from having issued several assists.

In the second game, CIT Hoop It Up scored a 65-58 victory over Indiana Aerospace University (IAU) behind the 16 points of Wilkin Sanchez.
