UE is quiet in recruitment...........Who are the new players to watch out in season 71

mighty_lion
01-11-2008, 06:11 PM
From what I saw in FMC, Acuna is a guy to watch for the Warriors next season. He is not new per se as he has been with the team already for a while.

So does that mean that Coach Dindo is staying in Recto and that all rumors about his ouster are not true? ???

hindi totoong pinapaalis na si coach dindo. In fact I watched fatrher martins cup last saturday at laco gym, the game is between ue and letran and i saw carmelita mateo (ue's manager) seated side by side dindo pumaren during the game.

Muka namang okay na okay sila.

But then again, that should really be the spirit. :) Go UE!

Is there an unwritten rule in UE that they are recruiting players roaming around the city?
Sayang!

bchoter
01-28-2008, 11:01 PM
^ Hindi naman talaga napagiwanan si Tagarda. He was playing for UST's Team B for sometime (in fact I felt that he was being favored by coach Pido when he was given the green light to shoot) but, for some reason, dropped out of the team and then resurfaced in UE. Noit a bad choice given coach Dindo's track record in developing his PGs, most notably the small PG who cried unabashedly when UE got the boot from UST. From an erratic PG he was transformed to a court general and the undisputed leader of the Warriors. I think coach Dindo had a lot to do with Martinez' improvement as well.

With a lot of motivation, maybe they could get over the hump. Pero mahihirapan sila this year what with teams such as UST, FEU, DLSU and Ateneo also in the hunt for a title shot sa season 71.

^ There are unconfirmed reports that Erwin Duran MIGHT be joining Soc Rivera in Adamson's Team B, with both players expected to play alongside each other by Season 73. Duran had a so-so stint with UE's Team B and is said to be restless and wants a change of scenery.

I think Ms. San Miguel studied in UE in just one semester during her freshman days, she's now in ABE AMA. It was just reported apparently in GMA that she's a UEan instead of being an AMA student during the competition. Anyhow, hoping for the best in Ms. World.

bchoter
03-16-2008, 05:33 PM
To make it somewhat relevant to the UAAP, she reminds me of how Bonbon was being disowned by some students and alumni when the controversy broke out. If she bags the crown will some UE students or alumni still disown her?

nassefadiong
03-17-2008, 01:29 AM
I'll speak for myself, I think UE is still proud of her. I'm saying this because the UE College of Arts and Sciences put big tarpaulins along CAS patio and at the lepanto gate (I guess) to announce how proud they are for Ms. San Miguel and will support her all throughout the Ms. World competition.

I don't find any correlation or parallelism with Bonbon's case to Ms. San Miguel. On a second thought, I'm not sure if she did transfer in AMA or STI or still affiliated to UE, 'coz based on what I heard she didn't enrolled this 2nd semester.

bchoter
03-17-2008, 12:42 PM
^ My bad. It was not outright disowning pala like what happened to Bonbon. But what was the "It was just reported apparently in GMA that she's a UEan instead of being an AMA student during the competition" for? So should we stop refering to her as "UEan" and start calling her AMAnian instead?

RUDY LINGANAY

VAL ACUNA
NOY ALABANZA
PAUL LEE
LUCAS TAGARDA

^ He played in the recently concluded Fr. Martin and HAIL. He was the only one allowed to play in the PBL by UE. There are a lot of guards for the PBA draft this year - Norwood, Tang, Castro, Mercado - that it would be wise for Marcy to wait for next year. I'll ask him when I see him in the PBL.

John Ray Alabanza is a gangling 6'5" center who once played for the San Beda Red Cubs in developmental and other minor leagues. Sadly, he never got to play in the NCAA and had to finish his high school elsewhere. Alabanza has a ton of potential to be a good center in a year or two, more so if he gets to snap on at least 10 to 20 pounds of muscles to his frame.

Imo, if we are to assess UE's chances, it's no longer about the line-up or the skills or talents of the players.

After so many years of being picked as favorites but always failing to win a UAAP title, the question should be on the heart and mind of the "organization".

Do they have the heart to win?

Do they have the collective mental strength to win the games that matter most?

Names we see in the line-up will not answer those questions.

Players lined up in the Fil-Oil tournament:

KEN ACIBAR, 6'4" forward-center
VAL ACUNA, 6' guard
JOHN ALABANZA, 6'5" center
MARCY ARELLANO, 5'10" guard
TOTO BANDAYING, 6' swingman
ERWIN DURAN, 6'4" forward
ELMER ESPIRITU, 6'3" forward-center
GINO ETRONE, 6'2" swingman
PAUL LEE, 6' swingman
RUDY LINGGANAY, 5'8" pointguard
PARI LLAGAS, 6'4" center
JAMES MARTINEZ, 5'8" guard
RAFFY REYES, 5'11" offguard
LUCAS TAGARDA, 6' offguard
HANS THIELE, 6'5" center-forward
NICO TIONGCO, 6'1" small forward
CHRIS ZAMAR, 5'10" guard

Headcoach is still DINDO PUMAREN

Are there other guys not on this lineup but who will be playing for UE in Season 71?

Is Acibar and Duran really 6'4? I remember seeing Acibar particularly in high school with Adamson and he seems smaller than Jeff Olalia who is listed as 6'1.

Players lined up in the Fil-Oil tournament:

KEN ACIBAR, 6'4" forward-center
VAL ACUNA, 6' guard
JOHN ALABANZA, 6'5" center
MARCY ARELLANO, 5'10" guard
TOTO BANDAYING, 6' swingman
ERWIN DURAN, 6'4" forward
ELMER ESPIRITU, 6'3" forward-center
GINO ETRONE, 6'2" swingman
PAUL LEE, 6' swingman
RUDY LINGGANAY, 5'8" pointguard
PARI LLAGAS, 6'4" center
JAMES MARTINEZ, 5'8" guard
RAFFY REYES, 5'11" offguard
LUCAS TAGARDA, 6' offguard
HANS THIELE, 6'5" center-forward
NICO TIONGCO, 6'1" small forward
CHRIS ZAMAR, 5'10" guard

Headcoach is still DINDO PUMAREN

Are these the same guys seeing action in the ongoing parallel Nike Summer League?

Are there other guys not on this lineup but who will be playing for UE in Season 71?

Is it true that the enigmatic 6'4" former FEU Baby Tam JONAS PAGUIA has crossed Lepanto and has been practising with the Red Warriors?

Ken Acibar and Erwin Duran just need to acclimatize themselves with coach Dindo Pumaren's system. They have the atheltic ability, height and length to fit right in. Also they need to work on strength and conditioning because these two seem to run out of gas rather quickly and have a tough time trying to get their second wind.

With this lineup, I guess UE will be a "run-and-gun" team this season.
No legitimate post player, a lot of perimeter guys who can drain the outside shots and speedy guards.

I think I just watched the once-lowly Rudy Linganay transform into one of the best damn pointguards in the country today against Lasalle in the Fil-Oil. He shot the ball well and had great selection, passed and orchestrated effectively, dribbled his way out of the dreaded Lasalle trap and was a surprise off the boards. I think he may just have given UE the best small guard rotation in the UAAP along with Marcy Arellano and James Martinez.

Paul Lee can create matchup problems as a hybrid 3, and he is not really that small at around 6 feet tall.

Yes I have to agree with his dribble penetration skills, Paul Lee will be an offensive threat.
But on close games, popostehan yan ng mga malalking small forwards ng ibang teams like La Salle's Mangahas & Barua, UST's Dylan Ababou, FEU's JR Cawaling to name a few and all are standing 6'3" at the small forward.

Disadvantage definitely on a half-court defensive game.

I have seen this kid in the RP youth tryouts. This kid came from Bacolod if I'm not mistaken. Plays SG/SF, can slash and finish the break, likes to low post as well and may galaw naman pag nabigyan ng bola sa poste. I think puede din itong alanganing PF pag kakailanganin. In the RP youth practices mostly wing ang laro nito before he was cut. May pagka-athletic din due to the fact that he can run down on fastbreaks and finish them when given the right pass and set up.

Haven't seen him since last season's NCAA Finals when they battled the Ryan Buenafe-led Baste Staglets but if he hasn't bulked up and got work and conditioning on his upper body, babangga-banggain lang to sa Srs level. has good footwork and "pang-amoy" around the basket but might need to develop a 12-15ft jumpshot since he won't be playing PF/C anyway.

Napansin ko lang this summer, Espiritu has been playing with a certain air of star complex. Masyadong maraming reklamo sa mga calls and non-calls that should have favored him or UE.

He should leave the complaining to the coaches and concentrate on his game. He maybe the main man for UE this coming season, but being too vocal about the officiating and engaging the refs to running discussions will not help him or his team.

UE guards played brilliantly today to beat the Red Lions. Martinez and Arellano are the best back court in UAAP today. tremendous three point shooting from Martinez and perimeter shooting from Arellano. ^^^ John Noble standing in his sneakers is probably 6'3". I saw him standing shoulder to shoulder with Buenafe and Salva in Season 83 of the NCAA, then next to his shoulda-been teammates PJ Barua and James Mangahas in the offseason tournaments. He was no taller than any of these players, and none of these guys is taller than 6'3".

Still, Noble has above-average skills and has a decent jumpshot all the way out to about 18 feet, as well as underrated strength guarding the low post. He may not be quite as big or strong as the prototypical college 4/3 like Mac Baracael or Hans Thiele but he does know how to play and could pull a few surprises against unsuspecting opponents.

Congrats to the Red Warriors for ruling the Filoil tournament.
Unfortunately natalo sa NSL. But then again you should not be ashamed of what happened.
It could have gone either way.

For the first time I laud Coach Dindo Pumaren for what he has done to the UE Team
Imagine the loss of Borboran, Gregorio and Canizares and UE has shown that they are still favorites for
this year's UAAP. I believe that Pumaren, like his brother has transformed the Warriors to title contenders
every year. A lot of your players will become popular after season 71 besides Marcy and Paul Lee.

Warriors hope to bounce back

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 22:30:00 07/04/2008

MANILA, Philippines--A brilliant run that came to a heart-gutting end last season hasn't discouraged the University of the East Warriors from shooting for the top.

But this time, the Warriors have kept their expectations modest.

"The UAAP is really unpredictable," said UE coach Dindo Pumaren. "We had a good run last year, but we fell short in the Finals. It was a learning experience. So this year, we just have to move on and keep on trying."

Pumaren's cautious stance stemmed from a tragic campaign that saw his Warriors racing to a remarkable 14-0 elimination sweep before collapsing against La Salle in the best-of-three championship series.

The Warriors hope to rebound despite the departure of four veterans, including leading scorers Mark Borboran and Kelvin Gregorio.

"They were our top two players last season, so right away we lost two players averaging in double figures," said Pumaren.

"We now have a smaller lineup so I think we'll have a harder time this year. But we're quicker. Some of our senior players have also improved."

The Warriors will parade seasoned guards led by team captain Marcy Arellano, James Martinez, Toto Bandaying, Rudy Lingganay and Paul Lee.

And despite a depleted frontline, the Warriors can still rely on the high-leaping Elmer Espiritu, Hans Thiele and the much-improved Pari Llagas.

The Warriors will also field six rookies including Negros Occidental standout forward Jairold Flores and former Letran Squires JM Noble and Lucas Tagarda.

"I think we're still okay," said Pumaren. "But it's hard to predict because almost everyone has a good chance of making it to the Final Four this year. We'll try to get as many wins as possible and hope for the best."

GAME TWO: UE Red Warriors def. UST Growling Tigers, 78-75.

The UE Red Warriors, last season's runners-up, proved to be a team to watch for in Season 71 after being able to beat the UST Growling Tigers in another down-the-wire game. Lucky breaks on the part of the Warriors helped them escape the attack of the Tigers.

I must tell you that this UE team has vastly improved. Hans Thiele and Barry Llagas, the two big men, were monsters offensively and defensively. Marcy Arellano, the King Warrior, and James Martinez, that tweener with a good outside shooting touch, kept on shooting with utmost precision. Even one time benchwarmers like Gino Etrone improved as well. Paul Lee was good too but his bad temper proved to be a deterrent as he was ordered out of the playing court due to two technicals as a result of trash talking. With the way they played in today's game, there is no reason why the UE Red Warriors should not be considered as potential contenders for the UAAP men's basketball championship title in Season 71.

As for the UST Growling Tigers, Jervy Cruz, the usual monster underneath the basket that he is, was their best man. Point guard Japs Cuan played very well up to a point that he even jumps to get the rebound. De La Salle Zobel alumnus and second point guard Jeric Fortuna had quite a decent showing in today's ball game. The tall shooters- Dylan Ababou, Francis Allera and Khasim Mirza, had a satisfactory performance but did not seem to feeling well.

One note on the UE-UST game though: the officiating was TERRIBLE. There were too many non-calls and dubious calls by Boyong Mañalac and his gang. I hope we would all watch them and other NABRO referees out throughout much of Season 71.

I know! Whistle-happy refs (if there is such a word).

Pero I still felt na kung complete ang Tiger's line-up the team can beat UE.

Ateneo subdues UE, 64-58, in UAAP

By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 18:15:00 07/13/2008

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) THIS TIME, it's the Ateneo Blue Eagles who are making winning a routine.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini led a dominant performance by Ateneo's big men as the Blue Eagles subdued the University of the East Warriors, 64-58, to remain as the only unbeaten team in the 71st UAAP men's basketball tournament Sunday at the PhilSports Arena.

"We utilized our size; and it's not just our size at the front, but also the size of our guards," said coach Norman Black after the Eagles wrapped up an impressive first week that included wins over rival La Salle and Adamson.

"It's a good start. We're on track with our goal, which is to make it to the Final Four. I know that normally during the UAAP season, it's a bumpy road. So it's good to get off to a good start and have a few wins behind us."

Al-Hussaini, the 6-foot-6 half brother of Red Bull's Carlo Sharma, buried a game-high 18 points aside from hauling down 17 rebounds and dishing out three assists.

"The big men stepped up for us, they really got in the boards," said Black. "Al-Hussaini had a big game for us and we facilitated our offense to (rookie) Ryan Buenafe in the end, it really helped a great deal."

It's the first loss in three games for the Warriors, who swept all 14 elimination games last season before bowing to La Salle in the Finals.

The Warriors played without top backup guard Paul Lee, who recently contracted dengue.

From a 51-51 standoff, the Eagles pulled away by drilling eight unanswered points to claim the upper hand at 59-51 with four minutes left.

As the Warriors' scoring drought continued, the Eagles coasted to their first double-digit lead at 63-52 at the 2:46 mark.

The Eagles managed to stay on top in the final two minutes even with the Warriors orchestrating a late 6-0 spurt to trim the margin at 63-58.

Chris Tiu added 11 points and four assists, while Buenafe and Nonoy Baclao contributed 10 apiece.

The Eagles charged ahead at 21-13, before the Warriors responded with a 14-5 rally in the last four minutes of the second quarter to wrest the lead, 27-26, at halftime.

Even with a smaller lineup, the Warriors outrebounded the Eagles, 25-15, in the first half, but shot a measly 28.6 percent in the opening two quarters.

But by the third period, the Eagles took control early with a 9-2 spurt to move ahead at 35-29. Al-Hussaini then made his presence felt at the paint, burying six straight points to extend the Eagles' lead by seven at 41-34.

Paul Zamar responded with a triple to trigger another Warriors' rally and Rudy Lingganay scored six of their next 10 points in the third quarter to even the count at 47.

The scores:

ATENEO 64--Al-Hussaini 18, Tiu 11, Buenafe 10, Baclao 10, Salamat 6, Salva 4, Escueta 3, Nkemakolam 2, Austria 0, Baldos 0, Long 0, Reyes 0. UE 58--Espiritu 11, Llagas 10, Zamar 9, Lingganay 9, Martinez 7, Bandaying 6, Thiele 4, Arellano 2, Noble 0, Etrone 0, Acuña 0, Reyes 0.

Quarters:
12-10, 26-27, 47-47, 64-58 ;D

;) ;) ;)

Anyway, big game by Ateneo over UE. It only goes to show that UE can be defeated especially if you apply tough and suffocating defense against them.

Potential Starting Fives:

UP:

PG: Braganza
SG: Sorongon
SF: Reyes
PF: Agbayani
C: Sison

UE:

PG: Bandaying/Lingganay
SG: Martinez
SF: Arellano
PF: Espiritu
C: Llagas

PG match-up: UP seems to hold the advantage on this position. As I have observed in past games, Arvin Braganza seems to be the better play-maker when compared to the likes of Toto Bandaying or Rudy Lingganay. However, Braganza has the tendency to dribble the ball longer than what is needed, giving the opposition the opportunity to steal the ball from UP.

SG match-up: It is quite obvious that UE holds the advantage on this one. We have seen how Martinez performs at both the 1 and 2 spots and he is very effective at them. With UE seemingly suffering from a height disadvantage nowadays, expect Martinez to fire his shots from the outside and toy around with the PBL veteran Sorongon who does not seem to have gotten his touch yet.

SF match-up: To me, this match-up is a draw. Both UE and UP have undersized small forwards in Marcy Arellano and Martin Reyes respectively. Based on the past few games of the Warriors, it seems like Marcy is not comfortable at the 3 since he is quite used in playing the 2. On the other hand, Reyes, who is really more of a 2, has no choice but to play at the 3 given UP's height disadvantage nowadays. Both Arellano and Reyes have not yet been given the open looks so I expect the two to prove their worth in today's ball game.

PF match-up: UE overwhelming holds the advantage on this match-up. We have all seen why Elmer Espiritu is one of the best post players in the UAAP today. Despite his relatively slender figure, his long arms and never say die attitude makes him an effective power forward to the relatively undersized UE team. Jay Agbayani is a good post player and defender too but between him and Elmer Espiritu, I would definitely choose the latter.

C match-up: I would say that this match-up is a draw. Magi Sison, UP's lone 6'5" and up player, has been performing very well underneath the basket as he is the main rebounding machine for the undersized Maroons. On the other hand, Pari Llagas, despite not being able to strut his stuff effectively in the past few games of the Warriors, is still an effective 5 and should be watched out by the undersized Maroons, which he might toy around unless he gets defended well by the UP team.

Bench match-up: If Paul Lee returns today, UE will hold the huge advantage as far as bench contribution is concerned. Lee is currently the most reliable Warrior and that gives Coach Dindo Pumaren quite a spark of hope given his team's malaise nowadays. Paul Zamar has also proved during the past UE games that he could be a good shooting guard by effectively sinking some crucial perimeter shots but his relative inexperience in the big time UAAP games might catch up with him. JM Noble, the prototype 3/4 replacement to Mark Borboran and Jorel Cañizares, does not seem to be ready yet unless he suddenly shows off in today's game against UP.

As far UP's bench is concerned, I must say that it is really shallow. Only Mike Gamboa, Don Fortu, Woody Co and Andrew Marfori give significant contributions coming off the bench. Kevin Astorga, despite his "angas", has not yet done any satisfying contribution while Migs De Asis is still a dud as of the moment.

Overall match-up: Despite the height disadvantage and the current losing skid, UE still holds the advantage on the match-up against UP because of the Warriors' experience and the fact that they are last year's runners-up.

Congratulations to the UE Red Warriors for playing splendid basketball today. The UE defense was so effective in suffocating UP. Kudos to James Martinez, Marcy Arellano, Hans Thiele, Elmer Espiritu and Raffy Reyes for playing great basketball. The Warriors may have been weaker this year compared to last year but they are not the team that should be taken for granted because of their relative weakness.

As for UP, I did not know what happened in today's game. I mean, I might be able to accept the fact that UE blew UP but what was unacceptable to me was the kind of attitude that the Maroons showed on court. The Warriors just pushed their lead to ten points and the Maroons just lost steam and the fighting spirit. They need a change in attitude, in my humble and honest opinion.

No offense. No defense. No fighting spirit. Goodness! What in the world happened to the UP "Fighting" Maroons in today's ball game? >:(

Well anyway, bright spots in UP were Martin Reyes, Mark Lopez and Woody Co. They seemed to be the only guys who went all out and fought for UP to the very end. I also would like to commend on the improved free throw shooting. That's it, I guess. :(

UE routs Fighting Maroons by season-high 29
by Josef Ramos

UNIVERSITY of the East bounced back from a stunning setback against Adamson last week by scoring a lopsided 87-58 victory over host University of the Philippines in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament last July 24, 2008 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Lanky power forward Hans Thiele tallied 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field along with five rebounds and two blocks, while slotman Pari Llagas poured in 10 and hauled down seven boards for the Red Warriors.

The Red Warriors, who led by as much as 40 points in the final period, upped their record to 3-2, while the Fighting Maroons suffered their fourth setback in five games.
“We played with a lot of effort and aggressiveness,” said UE coach Dindo Pumaren. “We started strong, and it looked like UP was shocked because our big men also delivered.”

The UE backcourt also did their share, as James Martinez added 12 markers and four boards, while Raffy Reyes registered 11.

Thiele dominated the early minutes, scoring nine points to propel the Red Warriors to an early lead at the end of first quarter, 27-12.

UE also underscored its defensive prowess, limiting the Fighting Maroons to just eight points in the second quarter while scoring 19 to close the half with a 26-point lead.

Forward Val Acuña’s jumper with 6:33 left gave the Red Warriors an 83-43 lead in the fourth quarter, their largest of the game.

The Red Warriors capitalized on the Fighting Maroons’ 26 turnovers by tallying 25 points off them.

Forwards Woody Co and Jay Agbayani paced the State University with 11 and 10 markers, respectively.

Individual Scores:

UE 87 – Thiele 15, Martinez 12, Reyes 11, Llagas 10, Arellano 9, Lee 7, Acuña 5, Lingganay 5, Bandaying 4, Espiritu 4, Zamar 3, Noble 1, Flores 1, Duran 0.

UP 58 – Co 11, Agbayani 10, Reyes 9, Gamboa 8, Lopez 6, Sison 4, Sorongon 4, de Asis 3, Braganza 2, Hipolito 1, Pajela 0, Astorga 0, Marfori 0, dela Victoria 0, Maniego 0.

I thought Marcy was the leader of this team. Arellano should have taken over when the Warriors needed clutch points down the stretch but again he failed to do that. Arellano has been averaging only 9 POINTS PER GAME.

Not to take the win away from the Tamaraws, FEU really played INSPIRED BASKETBALL today.

Interesting that Dindo Pumaren used most of the time Rudy Lingganay. James Martinez came off the bench but had limited minutes.

Tamaraws win one for Baracael; Archers score in UAAP
By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer (http://sports.inquirer.net/breakingnews/breakingnews/view/20080727-150931/Tamaraws-win-one-for-Baracael-Archers-score-in-UAAP)
First Posted 01:08:00 07/27/2008

THE FAR EASTERN TAMARAWS, POURING THEIR EMOTIONS on the playing court, slipped past the University of the East Warriors with a 71-69 squeaker in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball competition Saturday at the PhilSports Arena.

Andy Barroca shattered a 66-66 deadlock with 36 seconds left, before Aldrech Ramos sank two free throws off an Elmer Espiritu foul to give the grimly determined Tamaraws a 70-66 lead with nine ticks remaining.

It was an emotional win for the Tamaraws, who played their hearts out two days after star forward Mac Baracael was shot by an unknown assailant just outside the FEU gym.

The Warriors, however, placed the game under protest with team captain Marcy Arellano signing the score sheet right after the match. UE team officials said “certain calls will be questioned,” but did not elaborate further.

Unless the protest is upheld, the Tamaraws will be in third place with a 4-1 record with the Warriors dropping to 3-3.

Earlier, La Salle overwhelmed University of the Philippines, 82-60, to remain solo second at 5-1 with its fifth straight triumph.

The Archers pulled away with a strong second half anchored on Rico Maierhofer, who buried 10 of his 14 points in the third period and hauled down nine rebounds.

The Tamaraws played as if nothing had shaken their competitiveness.

Baracael, still confined in a hospital, had been declared “out of danger” yesterday. But the 23-year-old cager is still being monitored while recovering from a single gunshot that punctured his lungs and fractured two ribs (See related story on A27).

“Anyone could have won that game; it was our desire and heart that helped us win,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio. “Going into this game, we had no concentration in practice. We cut it because we weren’t focused. It was a team effort, both in offense and defense.”

The Tamaraws clearly made the unfortunate incident their rallying point with the No. 12, Baracael’s number, patched on their jerseys and taped on their shoes. Benedict Fernandez also had a rosary visibly tucked in his shorts.

“They gave their best for Macmac,” said Capacio. “I’m touched by what the players did. Instead of me motivating them, they motivated me. The boys gave such a huge effort.”

With the Tamaraws up at 70-66, Hans Thiele nailed a triple to push the Warriors within a point, 70-69, with 2.8 seconds.

Forced to stop the game clock, the Warriors fouled Barroca, who grabbed a key rebound in the dwindling seconds after missing the second of his two free throws.

Fernandez, finishing with a game-high 19 points, carried the Tamaraws early in the third quarter by drilling 10 straight points that tied the game at 43.

The Warriors had posted a double-digit edge for the first time, 43-33, following a fiery run after the break that started with two Rudy Lingganay treys.

Down, 43-49, after triples from Warriors Paul Lee and Paul Zamar, the Tamaraws went on a 10-2 rally capped by a JR Cawaling three-pointer to wrest the lead at 53-51.

What's up with Arellano? May injury din ba siya? Generally speaking, he's playing below-par this season.

He thought he was guarding himself when, in fact, it was Cawaling. That got to his concentration

He first tried out to be a UST tiger before he decided to stick with UE. Nabasa ko yan sa isang broadsheet where he was featured.

Marcy committed two crucial errors that help DLSU cut the lead to 6 in the last two minutes.
Good thing Dindo Pumaren pulled him out right after the next deadball.
Something's wrong with Arellano's game this season. >:(

UE displayed terrific perimeter three-point shooting. Martinez and Paul Lee came off the bench to hit 7 between them. Thiele was superb throughout the game, his best game by far this season.

good game by Thiele, Lee, Espiritu, Lingganay, Zamar, and Martinez! on Llagas, i'll give him 50/100. as for Arellano, there's something fishy about this guy :-\

i like what the coaching staff did to marcy, they let him play defense the whole game, to negate whatever he's trying to pull. to the fans, don't heckle when someone is down (got injured). please, be civilized.

overall, nice game by UE ;D

Because he knows it's not right to heckle an injured player. Show some civility.

UE had terrible shooting game today against a more determined La Salle team.

Martinez brought in wrong pair of shorts that enabled him to miss the first 16 minutes of the game.
Lingganay, Lee and Martinez all were shooting blanks while Thiele & Espiritu were missing point blank follow-ups.
Too many turnovers, horrible transition defense and a bad shooting day did in for the UE Warriors.

It seems like ages since the boys got their baskets during the last few minutes of the game. They were really shooting miserably the entire 4th quarter. Man, was I livid everytime they would miss those mid-range jumpers and under goal stabs!

I agree UE had a real bad shooting game and I congratulate la salle for making the proper adjustments to win the game. I just cant believe the irresponsibility of james martinez. His mistake or oversight cost his team. It affected him, his team mates and the coach. Imagine the stress of having your key player there but you cant use him. The player is antsy, his teammates are probably psychologically affected. The coach has to change his rotation. The rest is history. So next time, please check, double check your equipment and pack your bags yourself!

"Atuwa lang naman siguro mga taga ue kasi mababawasan ng magaling lasalle". I bet you and your fellow UEnians rejoiced when you learned Mac Baracael was shot. Magagalit sa inyo si boss Wang-Bu niyan.
