If things go the way they are heading right now, another tournament to be organized by esteemed BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) provincial head Lorenzo “Chao” Sy will again not have any Cesafi teams in it.

This developed after a Cesafi board meeting yesterday held at the Sen Ryu Restaurant along Salinas Drive, came at a consensus that its member schools will not be allowed to play in the upcoming Cebu Zonal eliminations for the National Students Basketball Championship on Jan. 12 at the Cebu Coliseum, since said tournament is sanctioned by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) headed by Rep. Prospero Pichay.

Cesafi is a stakeholder in the country’s basketball governing body, the BAP-SBP and as such, will only participate in BAP-SBP sanctioned events. This development means that the four participating teams, namely, seven-time champion University of the Visayas, runner-up University of San Carlos, University of San Jose-Recoletos and Southwestern University will most likely, skip the competition.

BAP –SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio confirmed that the tournament is not one of BAP-SBP’s projects.

“This is not a sanctioned tournament by BAP-SBP. We weren’t even informed of this. We want to nationalize the schedule of basketball here in the country. Sana naman they contacted us about this para naman ma-outline namin ito sa schedule. Mahirap ba yun?” Gregorio told Cebu Daily News.

“We have a lot of plans for Philippine basketball. Sana hindi maapektuhan ang mga ito by these things. At the end of the day, it’s the schools’ decision whether they want to join or not but mahihirapan talaga ang basketbol dito sa bansa natin kapag maraming konduktor na nagmamaneho,” added Gregorio. UV however, did not have any representation at the said Cesafi board meeting, as head coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug maintained yesterday, that his powerhouse squad, will still be joining the tournament.

“As long as we are invited, we will still participate, especially since the tournament is only here in Cebu. Duwa ra gud atong gipangita,” said Cabahug whose wards finished runner-up in 2001 to the Yancy de Ocampo-led St. Francis of Assisi Doves. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
