Pajo teams meet contrasting fates in M.Lhuillier U-21 hoop
The Freeman
Thursday, November 22, 2007

Teams from Pajo suffered contrasting fates at the start of the 4th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League over the weekend at the Brgy. Pajo gymnasium.

Host Brgy. Pajo rode on a strong endgame finish to repulse the Ave Maria Sanctuary Park-sponsored University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 81-78, while Pajo National High School fell prey at the hands of Consolacion National High School in lopsided fashion, 67-80.

Brgy. Pajo trailed by seven at the break, 43-36, but dominated the entire second half, 45-35, to turn the tide in its favor.

In sharp contrast, the Consolacion NHS cagers had little trouble in disposing off Pajo NHS. They closed the first half with a 42-30 lead and was never threatened from that point on.

In the other game of a featured triple-header, the University of the Visayas (UV)-Mandaue Academy squandered an 18-point edge in the first quarter but recovered in time to beat Compostela NHS, 67-61.

UV-Mandaue jumped to a sizzling 23-5 start, but suddenly lost offensive fire, allowing the gritty Compostela stalwarts to pull within 41-46 going into the final 10 minutes of the contest.

That was the best Compostela could muster though as UV proved to be a tough nut to crack at crunchtime.

A total of 16 teams are taking part in the two-month tilt organized by M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MLSDF) executive director Eddie B. Ybañez.—EBV

MLSDF-Mandaue selection demolishes Garing
The Freeman
Thursday, November 29, 2007

The MLSDF-Mandaue Selection opened its title campaign with a merciless 88-46 thrashing of Garing National High School in the 4th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Developmental Basketball League at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

The MLSDF-Mandaue stalwarts left their opponent at a mess after closing the first period with a 21-11 lead. They limited Garing to only 24 points in the first three quarters while scoring 64 on the way to dish out a 42-point rout.

In the other games, Ave Maria Sanctuary Park crushed SHO-Paknaan, 82-62, while Brgy. Pajo pulled off a 91-78 upset over the University of the Visayas (UV)-Mandaue Academy.

SHO-Paknaan was in fighting mood only in the first period where it* posted an 18-13 lead as Ave Maria Sanctuary Park staged a blistering run in the middle quarters, 56-26, to put the game beyond reach, 69-44, with 10 minutes left to play.

UV-Mandaue, on the other hand, used a 25-10 blitz to baffle Brgy. Pajo at the start. Pajo, however, fought back in the second quarter, 20-11, to pull within 30-36 at halftime.

Brgy. Pajo continued its courageous fightback and eventually turned the tables on UV-Mandaue using a crippling 39-25 rally in the windup. Overall in the final half, Pajo outscored UV-Mandaue, 61-42, to snatch victory in come-from-behind fashion.—EBV

MLSDF tops bracket B in MLKP U-21 cagefest
Tuesday, February 5, 2008

The MLSDF selection overcame a spirited endgame resistance by host Consolacion National High School (CNHS) to eke out a crucial 57-53 victory and clinch the top spot in Bracket B going into the quarterfinal round of the 4th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

MLSDF actually figured in a three-way tie with Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) Baby Skyblazers Lapu-Lapu City’s Cebu Fortune with similar 6-1 win-loss records, but got the No.1 seed by virtue of a superior tie-break output applying the Olympic quotient system.

MLSDF got 1.05 points followed by SCSIT with 1.02. Cebu Fortune posted only .94.

Thus, MLSDF will enjoy twice-to-beat incentive over the fourth-ranked Consolacion NHS in the next phase of the tournament, in the same way with SCSIT over Cebu Fortune.

In the ensuing sequence, Mercader was fouled with 12 ticks left before the final buzzer. After making his first shot, Mercader bungled his second attempt, but lady luck smiled at them as they grabbed the offensive rebound. MLSDF then dropped two more free throws to settle the final outcome.

In a non-bearing game, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors routed Garing NHS, 72-49. Both teams are already eliminated.

Thursday, February 14, 2008

Phil Mercader, who spearheaded MLSDF’s fiery uprising in the final two quarters, topscored with 21 points, while Mikee Cabahug, son of multi-titled UV Green Lancers coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug, chipped in 12 markers as they moved one step closer from clinching the covered title of the two-month tilt.

The MLSDF stalwarts started to pick up their offensive rhythm in the third period where they upstaged the Agukoy side, 21-11, to erase the deficit and gain a seven-point headway, 56-49, heading into the final period.

The Cebu Pycnogenol and Hoop It Up-sponsored Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens bucked away a lukewarm start to beat the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) Baby Skyblazers, 82-78, in their knockout semifinal match the other night at the San Roque Parish Gym in Brgy. Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

Thus, the CIT Wildkittens of coach Marvin Felicis earned the right to challenge the already waiting MLSDF Selection for the championship of the 4th M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League on March 30 at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

The SCSIT Baby Skyblazers dictated the tempo of the match in the first two quarters and even led by as much as 11 points, 49-38, at halftime.

The CIT Wildkittens, however, suddenly picked up their offensive rhythm in the third period where they retaliated with a searing 27-11 rally to gain a five-point headway, 65-60, entering the final 10-minute mark of the contest.

The Baby Skyblazers were still able to put up one big fight and tied the score at 78-all on a free throw by Tampus, but Caballero hit a booming triple with 11 seconds remaining in the game to bail the Wildkittens out of danger.

SCSIT of coach Jojo Romarate now trains its sights for the third place trophy against the Agukoy National High School of Consolacion prior to the MLSDF-CIT titular showdown.

The M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MSLDF) Selection dumped the Pycnogenol/Hoop It Up-sponsored Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens, 72-58, to win the 1st M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Under-21 Developmental Basketball League title on Sunday at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

Phil Mercader took the spotlight for MLSDF as he was named the regular season Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Mercader scored just eight points in the championship match but his season-long brilliance paved the way for MLSDF's title run.

In the season, the flashy Mercader was good for 18 points, six rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

Mercader was joined in the Mythical Five by John Paul Tampus of the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) Baby Skyblazers, Lemuel Malagar of Consolacion National High School, Brylle Orog of CIT and Lemar Dahil of Agukoy National High School of Consolacion.

Mikee Cabahug, son of the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers head coach and ex-PBA player Boy Cabahug, topscored for MLSDF with 11 points.

In the other game, Agukoy NHS sealed an 83-69 win over the depleted SCSIT Skyblazers to snatch the third place trophy.
