All is set for the staging of the Congressman Erbie A. Fabian Cup 3rd Student Basketball Tournament which will be held on September 8 (Saturday) at City Coliseum at Tetuan, this city.

The tournament is being sponsored by Congressman Fabian in cooperation with the El Federacion Basketbolista de Zamboanga.

According to Bong Casimiro, sports coordinator for the Congressional Office of Rep. Fabian, the basketball tournament will be participated in by 15 schools, colleges and universities from both public and private schools.

Casimiro said that the opening program of the games will be preceded by a long motorcade that will start at City Hall which will pass along the major thoroughfares of the city up to the coliseum.

A muse of the day will also be chosen out of the different muses from each participating basketball team.
Casimiro said that to further make the opening program more colorful,* a cheer dance competition and drum and lyre contest will also be held that would be participated in by several selected high school and colleges.

“Our basketball tournament is now on its third season. We’re very glad that many schools have registered for the tourney,” Casimiro said.

He assured that the Federacion Basketbolista de Zamboanga and the Office of Rep. Fabian have prepared fabulous prizes and trophies for the winners including consolation prizes for the participating teams.

“The basketball team of the different schools here are very grateful to Fabian for consistently supporting the promotion and development of basketball here in the city. This is a good opportunity for the basketball teams of schools to really further sharpen their skills and prowess in the said sports,” Casimiro added.

Meanwhile, Federacion Basketbolista president Pedro Alfaro Jr. said they expect the tournament to be more exciting as he said that most if not all the basketball teams here in the city are just at par with each other.

“We would definitely see actions when rival schools and colleges meet in the court. The public is invited to witness this great sports event,” Alfaro said.

Fabian, for his part, assured that he will always be consistent in supporting basketball here in the city to include other sports like soccer, volleyball, baseball, cycling, boxing and billiard, among others.

“Promoting sports here in the city will greatly encourage our young people to be physically fit and sports-minded. Besides, they will also be pre-occupied with sports and in the process will stay away from drugs and other vices,” Fabian stressed.

Fabian inter-school cage league ends
Daily Zamboanga Times
Tuesday, October 23. 2007

The FBZ-organized school basketball league came to a close last Saturday at the spacious City Coliseum.

Dubbed as the “3rd Cong. Erbie Fabian Basketball Cup”, it saw 13 high schools teams as well as* nine teams from the college division competing.

As the league’s main sponsor, Congressman Fabian was appreciated and elated by the participating school teams making the league a “developmental approach” in supporting the role of the youth in nation-building, where future citizens are molded or best shaped up today, in spirit, in moral values and physically.

The lawmaker-cum-sportsman is not only into basketball but in most disciplines as well. Erbie is a genuine leader of the city and a rare kind with a true heart of compassion.

Last Saturday saw two thriller-final games among the best basketball school teams in Zamboanga, battling for supremacy, while school pride was held for the nth time in high school category by one school, but not in the other collegiate division. That is the beauty of the most popular game of the country, as they say, “anybody’s ballgame”.

Hard fighting and young but talented Claretians gave the Southerner boys team a brief nightmare of their own, making points on both ends of the goal, backed up by loud school following battling among the best cheering squads with drums & lyre on both sides, creating a festive mood, all supported by parents and avid fans. But experience have its own merit as Southern City Colleges Boys prevailed 91-84 over the Claret High School team for the Juniors Championship. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) title for the school went to Oscar Delos Reyes of Southern City Colleges.

In the college championship game, it was a see-saw battle where leads changed most of the time all because of tight defenses applied by both teams. The taller UZ, the eventual champion, controlled the rebound section, coupled with awesome and magical shots, with coach Sarte masterminding the ploy. While the pace-setter Southern men of coach Morones kept on running for most of the action without let-up. The final score: UZ-61 and SCC-60.

And if one had witnessed the final seniors game above, it was actually too suspenseful to watch, where no one left early that the final score was determined only in the last 10 seconds of the battle. Others say it was “a classic game worth playing andremembering here in the city”

Although Southern men had won so many championship games, but not this time, as the UZ Wildcats, making history of sort as it climbed to reach the finals creeping through a ladderized three-crucial games against worthy opponents. The MVP for seniors title went to Frederick Malabago, a shifty guard-forward of the UZ winning team.

The organizing FBZ is composed of Pete Alfaro Jr., Edgar Galea, Nonoy Elopre, Maning Mamauag, Doy Villano, Lando Navarro and Bong Casimiro. It is to be recalled that the same FBZ group is the only regional group recognized by the SBP or the national sports association for basketball operations. The next tournament is now being planned into action.

The group thanks the good second district representative, Erbie Fabian, for making the league a reality.
