The UC Webmasters were a perennial CESAFI semifinalist until SWU booted them out of contention in the 7th season. Clearly feeling the absence of 6-8 beanpole Junemar Fajardo who is out with an injury. How would they fare in the 8th Season with Fajardo back in harness? Exciting match-up anticipation with Greg Slaughter, too.

Watch out, UC fans!

thadzonline

@ankle breaker..I spoke to UC director Mr. Bernard Ricablanca ganina, I might be gathering Webmaster profiles this Tuesday..

BTW, UC as I see it is a team built around 6'7 Junmar Fajardo who is really imposing down low. Fajardo has good coordination, is imposing on defense(average shotblocking ability), uses his height and size well to get rebounds, usually scores on the first pass to the post, pick and rolls and putbacks. He can jam as well. He can work on his foul shooting, but I guess refinement lang naman. Allain Abellanosa and Jonathan Canceran provide support to their big man. Abellanosa was once a CeSAFI MVP contender 2 years ago and is a deadshot with a range that extend far beyond the arc while Canceran I'd say is a natural 3 forced to play 4 down low. He can hoist threes with ease.

UC alumni set reunion games

CEBUANO and Magnolia Beverage Masters hotshot Dondon Hontiveros will be in Cebu for the first University of Cebu/ Cebu Central Colleges (UC/CCC) varsity reunion games on Saturday at 1 p.m in Cebu Coliseum.

Ritchie Bacalso, who serves as the spokesperson of the group, said in the weekly Scoop forum yesterday that aside from Hontiveros, other prominent UC/CCC varsity players who will suit up for Saturday’s game are former PBA players Roel Gomez (now UC coach), former San Miguel Beermen Freddie Abuda, FEU coach Roberto Flores, Naga City Mayor Val Chiong, Noynoy Falcasantos, Michael Orqullias, Rey Yncierto and others who carved a name of their own during their playing years.

Baclaso, who is one of UC’s prime point-guard and one of those responsible for steering the high school team to the national title in 1987 at Baguio, said that former UC/CCC high school and college varsity basketball are all invited to attend the reunion.

The event is designed to improve camaraderie and they will also discuss plans for their future reunions.

Before the game starts at 1 p.m, he said that all alumni basketball varsity will pay a courtesy call to UC owner and President Agusto Go and UC team manager and legal consultant Baldomero Estinzo on Saturday morning.

The alumni will be divided into four teams, Red, Yellow, Blue and White, and they will play knockout games.

The Red team, coached by Dodong Agas and led by Mayor Chiong and Bacalso will be up against the Blue team of coach Jake Rojas with team captain Yncierto, in the opening game. (NSM)

Another thing: wingman Del Rosario is transferring to USC but will not be playing varsity ball anymore so UC actually needs a lot of help in recruitment. They were eyeing one guy from Lapulapu but the guy was already recruited by Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals

PCCL: Webmasters, Olympians collide in Ormoc

The University of Cebu Webmasters and the STI Olympians tangle Tuesday in the Visayas-Mindanao leg of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the Ormoc Astrodome in Ormoc City.

The winner of the knockout duel between the Webmasters, back-to-back champions of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), and the Olympians, who topped the Mindanao regional qualifier, will take on the survivor of the match between Southwestern University and the Visayas regionals titlist.

Fighting for the Visayas slot at presstime were Iloilo champion University of Iloilo and Leyte titlist AMA Computer Learning Center.

The top two teams in the Visayas-Mindanao leg will then dispute a Final Four slot tomorrow with the winner earning the title of Southern Islands overall champion.

NCAA teams San Sebastian and Letran will contest the other semifinal slot for Luzon-Metro Manila also tomorrow after going through a grueling stepladder Sweet 16 in Manila.

As winners of the country’s top two college leagues, the four-time UAAP champion Ateneo Blue Eagles and the NCAA king San Beda Red Lions earned outright Final Four slots.

The Final Four starts on Dec. 5 at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan. The games will be aired live on Studio 23.

UC optimistic despite opting to go all local this season

Cebu Daily News

6:51 am | Friday, August 2nd, 2013

THE UNIVERSITY of Cebu (UC) Webmasters are hoping that their decision to go all local may pay off in the upcoming Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc.(Cesafi) season that starts this Saturday.

Two years after getting their last taste of the championship, the Webmasters are still struggling to adapt to life without Junemar Fajardo. And the search for a distinct identity continues with this season.

Long-time team manager and one of the Cebu basketball’s most-recognized and respected personalities, Atty. Baldomero “Merong” Estenzo, bared that the squad might be years off from making it back to the league’s elite in the wake of the departure of not just Fajardo, who eventually became the PBA’s top draft pick last year, but also star guard, Brian Heruela, who has already exhausted his playing eligibility and is now showcasing his skills in the PBA D-League with the Big Chill Superchargers.

Estenzo remained confident that his squad will compete to the best of their abilities led by Jan Auditor and the comebacking Kim Gomez, UC’s last two vital links to their championship years in 2010 and 2011.

As has been their staple during the post Fajardo-era, the Webmasters will be looking to overwhelm their opponents with their accurate perimeter shooting, something that UC has loads of weapons for in Gomez, Auditor, sophomore Kido Cabrera and rookies Noel Villanueva and Christian Tanparong.

UC toyed with the idea of recruiting a foreigner to keep up with the likes of Southwestern University, University of the Visayas and the University of San Carlos, all of whom have two imports each. They tried it out during the preseason’s Partner’s Cup when they fielded Arnaud Noah. However, that experiment eventually did not pan out.

“Mr. (Augusto) Go suggested that we get an import to keep up with the other teams. But I’m really against that since it is my belief that for every roster spot that we give to an import, we are depriving one Filipino of a chance at a good education. After all, the players we have aren’t well-off and they really rely on their scholarships,” said Estenzo./Correspondent Jonas Panerio

^^^ So where is this Arnaud Noah now? I take it this is the boy who originally tried out with the NCAA's St Benilde?

CAMEROONIAN import Mike Harry had a stellar debut with 16 points and 10 rebounds as University of the Visayas beat University of Cebu, 81-62, at the start of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament Saturday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Harry also had two steals and a block for UV, which took a 20-point lead, 63-43 with 6:13 left.

The Webmasters were still within striking distance early, 36-43, but the Lancers closed out that stretch with a 7-0 run for a 50-36 lead heading to the final 10 minutes of play.

Arvie Cabanero and Wowie Escosio wound up with 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Lancers, runners-up to Southwestern University last year.

Noel Villanueva led the Webmasters with 15 markers.

In the juniors division, UV's Baby Lancers pulled off a tough win as they outlasted the Britt Reroma-mentored University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, 77-74.

Ernesto Limitares hit the game-winning three-pointer with 4.9 seconds left.

The game was tied at 74-all after Kervin Villagracia scored off an inbound play and on a fastbreak with 27 ticks left on the clock. But that was plenty of time for UV and shifty guard John Escalona took advantage as he drove down the lane, drew the defense and found Limitares open on the wing.

USC had a shot to tie the game but Paul Galinato inexplicably tried a two-pointer as time expired.

Jun Manzo 22 points, with 12 coming in the second period. Escalona had 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.

Villagracia led USC with 21 points and six boards.

Games today:

Cebu Coliseum

5 p.m. – Don Bosco vs. UC (Juniors)

6:30 p.m. – UC vs. USJ-R (Seniors)

THE UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters try to bounce back from losses in their previous games when they tangle in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament today at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Jaguars fell to the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers last Saturday night, 80-91, to even their record at 1-1 (win-loss). The Webmasters also fell to the very same Lancers in their opening assignment, 62-81.

These two squads actually fought for the third place trophy last season with the Jaguars coming out on top.

But with both squads parading nearly new lineups, the action is expected to be fierce as they try to establish their place in the league’s pecking order this season behind the league powerhouses, UV and the reigning champions Southwestern University.

With the exit of star guard Brian Heruela, the Webmasters are still looking for their identity as they look for contributions from all corners.

The Jaguars, on the other hand, have seemingly found theirs in prized rookie finds Rendell Senining and Fletcher Galvez, both coming from the juniors titlists, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles. / Correspondent Jonas Panerio
