Southwestern University was once a power in Cebu college hoopdom and was the last champions of the now defunct CAAA, the forerunner of the CESAFI. Jojo Tangkay was the main man then.

The 7th CESAFI season saw the return of the Cobras' into mainstream competition after a 7-year layoff.

SWU diehards, this thread is for you.

The Cobras went beyond everybody's expectations during their first stint in the CESAFI, making it to the semifinals. A better SWU Cobras will be expected next season, and a more exciting one for only one reason, Eric Zanoria. Bring in those powerful slams!!

10-17-2007, 08:53 AM
Also don't forget USPF transferee 6-4 Clefford Maguate will be manning that paint for the Cobras next season after sitting out the 7th season owing to transfer eligibility rules. They also have another center standing 6-5 who will play next season, I still did not get his name though

update sa cobras;

the SWU Cobras is currently participating in Carcar City mayors cup. theyre playing against former pros and Cebu commercial league players. coach Dodie Miego said its part of their training. ive seen their game last saturday against Alve, and man that was a quite physical match.

they were playing against Manigo, Bong Marata, Ocañada, Mark Yee, Saladaga, Montecalvo. the Cobras lost by 4 points.

I'm looking forward for Clefford Maguate in the VAAA. With Eric Zanoria, for sure SWU is a one hell of a team.

thadzonline
11-19-2007, 07:08 AM
Clefford Maguate was a great inside presence in SWU's upset of the USC Warriors in the 2nd VAAA season..He only scored 7 points but changed a lot of shots and attacked the defense with his good ballhandling..he also had his share of rebounds..It was Eric Zanoria and Elvid Polegrates who teamed up in the last minute to take the fight away from the Warriors

yokam

Take nothing away from the Cobras, they're one of the teams to beat in months time. UV, USC, SWU, USJ-R in that order.

11-19-2007, 10:26 PM
The Cobras have solidified their frontline with the entry of Clefford Maguate in the lineup...There was another new guy with them who was about 6-2, but I havent seen him play, Divinagracia yata apelyido

litorja and zanoria is the 1-2 punch of the cobras.

thadzonline
11-24-2007, 06:12 PM
In the initial VAAA game, it was Polegrates and Zanoria who teamed up at endgame to deliver the crucial blows..Alfred Belande, Gianchand and Maguate helped in keeping it close in the 1st 3 quarters..Melvin Divinagracia is a 6'4" center/forward from Mabunturan, Compostela Valley Province..

kuzma1313
11-25-2007, 11:23 AM
Cobras are team to beat next year, belande is back and wat a heady player, so smooth on the court, magaute is a demon inside, zanoria is good, a high dunker, poligrates is the playmaker, always makes the crowd amazed with his moves, and the rest, valuable effort, COBRAS is the team to beat in years........

Go, COBRAS! ! ! !

thadzonline
11-25-2007, 12:23 PM
Cobras are a strong team, they could have been stronger if only Gilbert Gallarde was able to keep up with academics...a lot to watch out for next year, SWU with Maguate, Belande and Divinagracia making them a lot bigger; UV with Omandam(if he is allowed) and a trio of 6'4" rookies; and USC with Fil-Aussie Emel Rowe and a possible 6'9" fil-am addition

yokam
11-26-2007, 01:00 PM
For sure SWU will be a lot better than what they used to be. Eric Zanoria is playing confident and inspired basketball, and for sure Elvid Poligrates will be making most of his last season of eligibility (not sure on this one though). The addition of Cleford Maguate makes the Cobras not only tall but also deep, moving other big guys like Pacquiao and Belande off the bench.

taga camotes man kuno na si poligrates. mananagat siguro na didto. hehehe didto na sya nadiscover pagduwa sa USC against Danao Selection didto sa Danao that was also during the battle for 3rd place sa UC against SWU in the 1st Partner's Cup. manalayay ra na didto, bayran na sa taga Danao basta naa sila duwa.

sikat man na didto kay manghugyaw man ang taga Danao basta pasahan na sa bola.. he was invited by coach JayRams to try out sa USC kuno after the game. he was personally also invited by coach Miego for cobras. eventually, he became a cobra. infairness sad ni Poligrates, morag naning man sad moeskwela. hehehe.. may pagka garaon lang ni tawhana on or off the court.

jojo tangkay a former cobra was a classmate of my cousin. where did he came from?

thadzonline
12-04-2007, 10:56 AM
yeah, Jojo Tangkay graduated from USJ-R high in 1997, he was then the Baby Jaguars' main man. The Jaguars leading scorer however was a speedster by the name of Armand Tusoy who unfortunately dropped out of school. Tusoy was my classmate but I hardly see him attending classes then. Oscar Quiachon was also in that lineup(1997) as well as a tall Saramosing(6'4" I guess) who I never heard of after graduating from HS..Another prominent name in that baby Jaguar batch is Jan Señerpida who went on to play for Letran in the NCAA

eleazar saramosing guy is not 6'4" i believe, he's around 6'2" but huge. he's son of tailor from mambaling and he's into piggery business. he's friend of mind. we used to play friendly pickup games before. i think oscar quiachon is from tuburan. im wondering what happened to wendel señerpida after his NCAA stint. haven't heard from since.
one of the former jaguars that faded into the scene is ronald saracho and cesar romero. what happened to them after their PBL days with chowking? i think they were with danny aying but it's only aying who was able to play in the PBA and until now still playing for the ML in MVBA.

nope, not Eleazar Saramosing, it was somebody else, someone really lanky and thin. The name of that Saramosing escapes me..Ronald Saracho was active in the local commercial leagues but I haven't heard of him lately..

Another ex-Jaguar Joel Co operates a hotdog franchise, my cousin saw him once, I think somewhere in Cebu Doctors' University where he has a stall

Am wondering why CANONIGO is not on the line-up of SWU on the on-going VAAA. I will be more formidable if he is around to dominate the rebound and paint. Hope he will be back on the playing five for the Cobras.

if thats the case, its a big loss for the Cobras...they will be losing 2 key power forwards in Gianchand and Canonigo, Rene Pacquiao and Melvin Divinagracia must step up in the frontcourt then...USC is getting bigger, UV as usual has a good frontcourt rotation that will see a much improved Greg Slaughter and Edrian Lao, UC is also reportedly recruiting some big men from Mindanao

Thrilling Game!

We survive against the UAF ( 94-92 ), with the prolific Poligrates doin the damage in the last seconds of the game. Meaning, we are on the quarterfinals now! Keep up the good work, cobras! Hopin Canonigo is there to help the team, he is a big asset inside the paint but nevertheless Maguate, Zanoria, Belande, Litorja, Poligrates, Django aand the rest is there to play great basketball...

Go for the Championship!

CONGRATS! COBRAS.

As i said to you that we will won the NBSC. . . . Too bad for the lancers, may nakahanap sila na katapat, thats not an excuse if they are " tired ' during their semis match against USC, thats part of the game. Sad to say they lose, and as i observed, mepana ( veteran ) is a heck, grabe naman, he is makin advantage on gianchand but no avail, wala namang shooting. Anyway, the SWU community is in heaven now for the said CHAMPIONSHIP..

Nice game for the MVP Belande, the wiry and prolific Poligrates, the defense of Gianchand and Jalandoni, and the moves of Zanoria and Maguate.... Look for them in this CESAFI 2008-2009 season......

Enjoy your trip soon in China ( exhibition )......

6'5" Melvin Divinagracia, 6'5" Rene Pacquiao and 6'3" Jerds Ceniza are still Cobras but of the 3 probably Divinagracia has the better chance of retaining active varsity role for the CeSAFI, if SWU takes the 2 bigs from CDO, Pacquiao and Ceniza could be in the reserve list....SWU used a 42-12 1st Quarter to fuel a statment win against the Greywolves and did not even make a single substitution in the opening quarter, then coasted along to victory

a son of my neighbor is still young, around 16-17 years old. he's now standing around 6'2"-6'3" but he's not really into basketball. he's playing pickup games in the neighborhood but for me he's not going to excel in basketball. he's too skinny and with his age, i think it's too late to train him.

reminds me of USC's Robert Codilla, who recently entered NBTC and so far are showing some signs of improvement especially with his ballhandling so I wont say its late..Heck, Tim Duncan did not play basketball until high school, in fact he was a competitive swimmer before that--->does I sound like steve kerr in the NBA Live 2007? lol

I once had a good chat with coach Dodie after a Cobras game in the MLKP..and unless they can land the twin towers from Pilgrim Christian in CDO(which is malabo), word from the coach is outside of the lineup they used in the MLKP, maybe they will just add 1 or 2 reserves to replace Canonigo who will be sitting out..around 6'1 to 6'2 daw for the power forward spot...so I guess ma activate si Pacquiao and SWU will move Maguate to the 4 spot...

Looking at USJ-R, they seem to be still experimenting with their lineup where you can see na babad na babad yung mga baguhan nila and those guys who were benchwarmers from last year and guys like Malinao are seeing limited minutes...sa mga beterano nila parang si Ponce and Justiniani lang ang may malaking playing time

He also made it to the mythical 5 of that tournament. I wonder where his teammate Ambohot is. Sean Ompad was a former trainee at UC and has transferred to SWU, his father once played for SWU. conflicting reports came in various news papers in cebu about the SWU-UC game. one newspaper reported that fajardo scored triple double, 31 pts. 13 rebs and 10 blks but others reported that he only got 9 blks.
what doomed the cobras is the absence of their do it all forward eric zanoria who had bout with chicken pox and also armecin. other factors were jansen abella's superb game as well as their new recruits. bohol born but US raised edward pao also played good. the same with kevin quilantang.

the official stats sheet only says 9 blocks, media try to play up that hype again. I wonder when the deputy commissioner have sent out the official stats sheet to everyone here..

I think it is not tha absence of Eric Zanoria or Armecin that spelled doom for SWU. For one, they took UC lightly, and paid dearly for it. In the last play where they had a chance to tie, Nunez made a stupid decision to drive against Fajardo who had his 9th block on him. I dont get a 6'2 guy challenging a 6'8 tower who have been blocking his shots all night long.

Well, in fairness to SWU, I think some spotty officiating also did not help

thadzonline

Nope, the suspended players cannot be replaced with reserves. Their names have been submitted at the start of the season and the CeSAFi rules do not allow substitution in the roster in any case. The sad thing about what happened is Mr. Ryan Aznar and the coaches did not even know about what happened until called up by the commissioner.

if ambohot is going to SWU, what about his rival papot paredes? is he really going to DLSU or will stick at xavier?

Who is PAREDES? Is AMBOHOT a sure in for next year team, if that happens, we are on the right track to get the championship. And hopin, with what happened with the players suspended, its a lesson.

Go COBRAS!

papot paredes, the 6'5" center/forward of rp youth team.

next year, somebody has to step up big time in lieu of Zanoria who will no longer be eligible. They still have a solid core with Maguate, Nunez, Belande, Litorja and Django though

i think an ex bomber and ex panther guards will be activated to replace Eric Zanoria. hopefully, these two will be seen in action on leagues after CeSAFI wraps up. as for Ambohot, im not sure if hell be joining the cobras i even never heard there is a negotiation going on.. ;D

It was Mr. Ryan Aznar himself who relayed to me that Ambohot already committed with SWU. Joel's mom asked for just one year for Ambohot to at least complete his associate's degree before moving over to Cebu. So yeah, I'm expecting him after March 2009

That would be great if Ambohot suit up for the cobras, ompad and nunez are there already so, high expectation for them. Hopin they can bounce back after CESAFI, with lots of tournaments coming.

thats if Slaughter is bluffing when he says they have a new 6'10" recruit

ankle breaker
09-23-2008, 11:01 PM
that can be a bluff or true. let's just wait next year.

thadzonline
09-23-2008, 11:18 PM
apparenty their 6'10 recruit is coming next month so you wont have to wait that long....word from Slaughter: "all I heard from Dennison is gamay..so I dont know how legit that is"

Plus Lanete has signed up for the PBL Draft so Cincoflores has to step up big time at the PG spot

ankle breaker
09-24-2008, 09:22 PM
aside from lanete, are their any lancer in the PBL draft? does it make any impact to the UV lineup? is he still going to be eligible to play in the ongoing CESAFI now that he declared for the draft?

thadzonline
09-25-2008, 08:38 AM
if Lanete gets listed in a roster in the PBL then he loses his CeSAFI eligibility

ankle breaker
09-25-2008, 09:19 PM
so that's the repecussion of joining the draft. i believe this is all pre-arranged. CESAFI finals is getting nearer so I pressumed the team that will pick lanete and rowe will have to wait in the semis outcome. so whoever got booted out first will get to sign in a team. is that going to apply in the VAAA too? i believe VAAA is going to start in november, right?

thadzonline
09-26-2008, 09:13 AM
IF you are signed for the PBL, you wont have the chance to play in the VAAA whose schedule overlaps with that of the PBL

ankle breaker
09-26-2008, 08:57 PM
so if rowe and lanete will be picked and signed by a PBL team, they can no longer represent their respective teams. or they can forego the signing for the meantime while VAAA is on going, is that possilble?

thadzonline
09-26-2008, 09:04 PM
for what reason are they going to go to the PBL Draft then forego being able to play therein?

Hopin we can bounce back when the VAAA starts.. Sana makuha na natin si AMBOHOT?

maybe they still wanted to represent their respective schools that's why might forego their signings.

thadzonline

well then if thats the case, they should have foregone the drafting for next year. I don't see any logic why one enters the draft but wont play anyway

ankle breaker
09-30-2008, 10:05 PM
i see it very illogical but for me it's some sort of strategy for these players. just look at what happened to mike luga and rino berame? same thing with JR quiñahan. i believe they were drafted ahead but they were not able to play right away in the PBL. it was only after their playing years runs out. and that's also the reason that CESAFI made some provisions to disqualify players who will suit up for any team other than cebu based teams affiliated to CESAFI.

thadzonline
09-30-2008, 11:03 PM
when Luga, Quinahan and Berame applied for the PBL draft, they no longer had eligibility left in the CeSAFI. They, however played for UV in other tournaments such as VAAA, SInulog CUp, etc. Berame perhaps because he did not impress at Toyota..the same with Luga..as to Quinahan I'd have to check again if he did return to play for UV after he was drafted in the PBL

manila is just 45 mins away from Cebu and We know man pud most of the players di man sad na musulod sa ilang mga klase if musulod man di sad tanan sudlan,we have face it basketball gud ilang gusto mao gyd na ilang future basketball nalang...di man gyd na sila mu sulod sa USC man gani di man na sila muisulod kung musulod man gani manga tulog ra ghapon sa classroom ug di mag standby2x ra ,

I beg to disagree. This season, wa maapil si Padayao and Ferraren sa team because of reasons related to academics. Kanang players nga imo gimention, di gyud na magdugay sa USC.

Besides, kung mag PBA sila, di na lang sila mo eskwela. hasol hasol lang sila og travel to and from Cebu. ka gasto uroy, and maskin ako team owner, di ko mogasto oi, kadaghan ra sad player sa Manila.

Kung gusto sila mag PBL, well fine, let them go there, why bother pa magskwela kung mao man diay na ila gusto.

look at Niño Ramirez. Where is he now? Daghan ni ask why wala siya nag PBL. The reason is nagtiwas pa og eskwela

USC is alread known to be strict in terms of academics to their varsity players. i have friends and batchmates who were former golder warriors, they always see to it that they can pass the grade accorded by the school. They can ask permission from their instructors to be excuse if there is an important practice or game. that's the reason why james relampagos, mark cotelo and other star players of USC before didn't last long and transferred to other schools.

That is a very good move for them to improve and compete with the best team in CESAFI to make the league a competitive one,and it will be good to CESAFI in general.
