PBL pre-season matches today

Games Today (The Arena, San Juan) 12 noon — San Mig Coffee vs Burger King 2 p.m. — Hapee Toothpaste vs Toyota Balintawak 4 p.m. — Pharex vs Harbour Centre

TEAMS FOR the coming PBL First Conference get the chance to size up each other when the country’s premier amateur basketball league holds its pre-season tournament today at The Arena in San Juan.

Except for Bacchus Energy Drink and the Philippine team, the six other teams – Harbour Centre, Toyota Balintawak, Hapee Toothpaste, Burger King (Lina Group of Companies) and Pharex – will take part in the one-day event which they are going to use as a barometer whether they will excel or not in the season-opening tournament.

"This will give them the chance to show their worth and scout their rivals," said Commissioner Chino Trinidad.

Clashing in the opening game at 12 noon are San Mig Coffee (formerly San Miguel-Magnolia) and Burger King followed by the Hapee Toothpaste and Toyota Balintawak showdown at 2 p.m.

But the limelight is expected to fall on four-peat seeking Harbour Centre when it takes newcomer Pharex at 4 p.m.

Jason Castro, Beau Belga, Jonathan Fernandez, Chad Alonzo and Ericl dela Cuesta will not be around but the Batang Pier are expected to unravel a surprise package in Mercado Solomon.

The 6-foot-1 Mercado, according to a team insider, is exciting and dead-shot from the perimeter.

But the Batang Pier will be hard-pressed to win their fourth straight championship since everybody have beefed their respective rosters.

For one, Fil-Am Gabe Norwood will be playing for Hapee; four players from University of the East will reinforced Bacchus squad; San Mig Coffee has Ateneo’s Ford Arao to lean one, and Toyota Balintawak boasts a mixture of youth and experience due to the presence of Letran and Jose Rizal University stars.

Even Burger King and Pharex are not to be taken for granted since they have players capable of scoring 20 points or more at any given day.

Meantime, Hapee team manager Bernard Yang said that Norwood has already signed his contract with the team and is arriving either Tuesday or Wednesday in time for the opening on Saturday.

Looked like more than half of UST's team are in the PBL. Cuan, Ababou, Taylor, Allera, Canlas, Gile, Espiritu, Dizon. Hapee won over Toyota. SanMig (Arao didn't play) beat Burger King while Pharex (De Guzman played some minutes) and Harbor were playing when I left.
