^AFAIK Former Red Lion Kevin Espinosa recently transferred to Mapua. I'm sure he'll be a good addition to the Cardinals' campaign next season. :)

I see, Thanks cub.

I remember way back then, when UP had their championship. Parang San Beda na rin nagchampion, (Paras, Magsanoc, Altamirano, Salvatiera & Mendoza) Puro Bedan ang nagdala. Mapua can tap the talents of these young guys & make their team stronger. Syempre, gusto ko rin makita umasenso ang mga bata na toh.

If he is studying within MM i dont see any problem on him going to intramuros and trying out but if he is living outside and is impractical for him to travel all the way to manila, you can make a video clip and send the film to MIT baskeball deputies for evaluation. Wala naman sigurong susugal na magpadala ng plane ticket kung walang makitang ebidensiya nag kaniyang kahalagahan.

* * *This year, MHSS has already competed as a guest team in Chess, so that means they are now making moves to set up their full secondary varsity program.

Sheesh!!! It's surprising to see MIT without its own sub-forum. But mighty_lion beat me to it some weeks back with this thread. This should do for now.

Greatest players? MIT produced three MVPs in the PBA. No other institution can make that claim, correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's my list:

1. Alvin Patrimonio
2. Fortunato "Atoy" Co
3. Alfredo Hubalde

And in a place all his own, among the NCAA's early all-time legends:
Carlos Badion

And then some (in no systematic order, and who at least played in the PBA, or was an NCAA MVP):
4. Armando "Jango" Arce
5. Romulo Mamaril
6. Joel Banal
7. Leandro Isaac
8. Benny Cheng
9. Eric Leano
10. Ruben delaRosa
11. Chito Victolero
12. Arturo Trajano
13. Kelvin dela Pena

Ayaw kong solohin ito, kaya kayo naman...

Malayan Science High School ang school na pinalit sa MIT HS.. Malayan Hs is located at UN Ave. Malapit sa Toyota Otis.. The school has been operational for three years already. My friend who is already there said na parang Chinese school kasi most of the students are Chinese. I hope that they at least put the phrase "formerly known as Mapua Institute of Technology High School" as a sign of respect to its alumnis.

I heard that there are really plans of joining the NCAA juniors competition. Maybe if not this season, next year na. Sana makabalik na sila sa Juniors scene because I read at Wikipedia that after the Red Cubs, the Red Robins are the second team to have the most championships in their pockets.

Sana makagawa na sila ng dynasty and challenge Baste and the rest of the NC Junior teams right away.

* * *YES, Malayan High fielded a chess team in the recent NCAA 83 Juniors Chess competitions held at the SM City-Manila.* However, they were deemed a guest team, meaning they will play but both their own and their opponents scores will not be counted in the overall standings.

Noosa Shoes, formerly Blu Detergents, wants Chris Tiu to be the cornerstone of its new PBL franchise.

Team owner Dioceldo Sy, the former PBL chairman, yesterday told The STAR they’re in the middle of negotiations to have the Ateneo hotshot help Noosa in its campaign starting on Feb. 23.

“My team manager (Pat Aquino) is talking to him (Tiu) right now. I would also talk to him any day soon so that I could personally convince him to play for us,” said Sy.

“We want to have Chris Tiu as the cornerstone of this franchise,” he added.

Tiu, who has yet to apply for the PBL rookie draft, was part of the RP team that trained for the SEA Games last December. But he did not make it to the final roster of the team that won the gold in Thailand.

Tiu, who has one playing year left for Ateneo in the UAAP, can suit up for Noosa and still find enough time to prepare for the varsity tournament which starts in July.

As a new PBL franchise, Noosa was given the right to hire two direct players. The first one is reserved for Tiu, and the second probably for a big man.

“We’re still looking for our other direct hire, we hope to use it on a big man,” said Aquino.

The Shoe Stars have already formed a 13-man line-up headed by former collegiate stars Jemal Vizcarra and Allan Evangelista of Santo Tomas, Axel Doruelo of UP and Dom Javier of Perpetual Help.

Also on its fold are Mike Beuschler, former Far Eastern U standout Roser Mangahas, UP‘s Virgilio Serios, St. Benilde’s Kris Robles and Jose Rizal’s John Wilson, Mark Pradas and Jayson Nocum.

Aquino said they’ve also picked the top three players of reigning NCRAA champion Arellano – Gio Ciriacruz, Adrian Silana and Jerome Agustin.

Leo Isaac, who won a PBL title for underdog Dr. J Alcohol in 1998, when it defeated a fancied Tanduay team, will coach the Shoe Stars.

“This is already a competitive team but the team would be stronger if we could get Tiu,” said Aquino, who’s arranging a team building session next week in Batangas.

Cardinals roll past Bulldogs
by Josef Ramos
Wednesday, 16 April 2008

With an experience coach telling his players what to do, the Cardinals became a team to reckon with in the 2nd Fil-Oil Flying V Invitational Preseason Cup with its 1st win last April 16, 2008.

The MIT Cardinals, coached by veteran mentor Leo Isaac, relied on their running game down the stretch to score a convincing 87-77 rout of the struggling National University Bulldogs at the Arena in San Juan City . “It’s definitely a good start,” said Isaac. “We struggled in the first quarter but it’s okay because I know the players will respond immediately.”

The Bulldogs began with a tremendous 10-0 attack in the first quarter, highlightened by Jay Jankhe’s two triples. They almost buried the Cardinals after Edwin Asoro hit a lay-up for an 18-9 lead with 1:21 minutes left before Mapua’s Kelvin Dela Peña and Jonathan Banal conspired to a 6-2 run that sliced the Bulldogs lead, 15-20, at the end of first quarter.

Mapua uncorked a devastating 26-15 burst in the second quarter capped by Dela Peña’s creativity to seize the advantage at halftime, 41-35. Dela Peña finished with 10 of his 23 points in the second quarter, while Allan Mangahas gathered 17 points, including a three-point play by the end of third quarter for a 65-52 count.

The Cardinals sustained their running game in final quarter to tally 22 points that sealed the win, despite the Bulldogs’ 25 point explosion.

Individual Scores:

Mapua 87— De la Pena 23, Mangahas 17, Mazo 14, Pascual 11, Cornejo 7, Banal 7, Sarangay 5, Acosta 4.

NU 77- Jankhe 16, Ponferada 13, Baloran 10, Asoro 9, Garcia 5, Ponferada 4, Fabule 4, de la Cruz 3, Galapon 3, Luy 3.

Quarter Scores: 15-20, 41-35, 65-52, 87-77

my wishlist for my cards this season:

1. Gang rebound tayo lage, wala tayong dominant big man..
2. Steady play from Jonathan Banal.. mas tapangan pa niya..
3. Magcontribute right away ang ating rookies na sina Mangahas at Sarangay (any news bout Espinosa?)
4. Mag-back up ang vets pag medio tinatambakan na tayo ng kalaban..
5. Na ibail-out ni Dela Pena sa crucial plays..
6. Makapasok sa finals.. at saka isipin kung pano i-upset ang Lions.

kaya naten yan.. underdog tayo! no one will see us coming.. ;D

Mapua Red Robins return to NCAA
04/23/2008 | 06:01 PM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us MANILA, Philippines - After a three-year hiatus, the Mapua Red Robins will return to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for the league's 84th season which starts on June 28 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Mapua, which the host for this upcoming season, was given by the NCAA board three years to produce a team after the school management decided to abolish its high school department in 2004.

And this year's Red Robins will be composed of students studying at the new Malayan High School of Science, the first ever private science high school in the country.

"We decided to form our high school team because if not we will not be allowed to participate in the seniors which will eventually jeopardize our hosting," Ding Lozano, the school's athletics director, said in a statement issued on Wednesday. "That was the condition given to us by the policy board and we have to abide it."

Lozano is also the incoming NCAA Management Committee chairman.

Managing the team are former Mapua Cardinals Randy Alcantara and Chito Victolero, who started forming the team just two months ago.

Alcantara is a Cardinal who won the title for Mapua in 1990 under coach Joel Banal.

Victolero served as assistant to Banal when Mapua bagged its back-to-back title in 2006.

"Our players are a bit short and mostly young because MMHSS only has classes up to third year," Cralito Geronimo, assistant athletics director, said. "But we're trying to form a competitive team in time for the NCAA."

It was in 2000 thaT the Red Robins bagged their last NCAA title under coach Horacio Lim. That was their 18th overall since
1941.

The Red Robins produced the likes of Rudolf Kutch, Johnny Revilla, Billy Abarrientos, Ruben de la Rosa, Gherome Ejercito, Ogie Gumatay, Estong Ballesteros, and Mark Clemence Telan, who all played or are still playing in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). - GMANews.TV

Kelvin Dela Pena had 23 points on five three-pointers to go with four assists to lead Mapua over JRU 90-69 in the Fil-Oil. From a close 26-23 game at the end of the first period, Wency Cornejo, Jon Banal and Allen Mangahas combined to pull the Cardinals away 35-23 mostly on transition points. JRU - looking tired and tentative - could not come back from that. James Sena still had good numbers - 24 points and 11 boards - but the Heavy Bombers were simply out of it in this game. Mangahas added 14 points for Mapua.

It was nice to see former San Beda boys TG Guillermo and Mark Sarangay play crucial roles in the game against SSC yesterday.

It was unfortunate na nilangaw yung venue. This is what happens when there is no balance of power in the league. Nawalan na yata ng gana manood supporters ng MIT at SSC, especially that both teams suffered opening day losses.

Even the presence of the chearleaders from both sides was no longer necessary. Ano ang silbi ng chearleaders kung wala namang ili-lead ng chearing?* *???*

Pati yung Face of the Day walang mapag pilian dahil wala ngang tao. Ang pinili na lang e yung chear leader ng SSC.* ;D

I think KDP is okay. Being the senior cardinal, his game has matured. He acts more of a decoy to draw the opponents defense, then passes the ball to his teammates, like just what he did to TG Guillermo.

Looks like Mr Dela Pena is back on track, and his Cardinals are all the better for it.

From our friends over at PDI ---

MANILA, Philippines--Slowly but surely rediscovering his lethal form, Mapua stalwart Kelvin Dela Peña, the reigning NCAA Most Valuable Player, is playing a pivotal role in the Cardinals' early-season success.

The Cardinals have racked up four victories in a row as they survived a killer three-game stretch this week unscathed, thanks largely to Dela Peña's stellar performances, which also earned the senior guard the NCAA Press Corps' player of the week honor.

After struggling with just nine points on 2-for-14 shooting in the 29-point blowout loss against San Beda on opening-day, the senior guard bounced back, presiding over the Cardinals' balanced attack by averaging 11.6 points the past three games.

"Kelvin (Dela Peña) was trying to do everything for the team in the first game. It's a good attitude but I told him he will be more effective if he focuses on his role as a scorer," said Mapua coach Leo Isaac, whose squad goes into a 10-day break before facing Letran on July 22.

Mapua's victories against Philippine Christian University and Perpetual Help highlighted Dela Peña's uncanny ability to hit the big shots down the stretch. He nailed a key lay-up with 54.4 seconds remaining that spelled the Dolphins' doom in the Cardinals' 77-71 win Monday.

Dela Peña also knocked in a triple with barely a minute left to quell the Altas' last-ditch assault and allow the Cardinals to escape with a 76-67 decision.

Dela Peña's leadership has coach Leo Isaac even more impressed.

"He has good leadership qualities," Isaac said of Dela Peña, who is expected to join the PBA Draft next month.

Mapua played classic grind-it-out basketball to down San Beda 53-47.

Coach Leo Isaac said their strategy for the game was to "frustrate and delay" and the Cardinals did exactly that. Milking the shotclock down to the last second, the red gold and black kept the much bigger Red Lions at bay and totally off-kilter. They kept the red and white to only 20 points at the half for a 32-20 lead at lemontime.

San Beda looked poised to finally put an end to the Mapua party coming within 44-46 late in the fourth period. But guard Allan Mangahas nailed a trey to beat the shotclock to make it 49-44 cushion for the Cardinals.

Center Jason Pascual and reigning NCAA MVP Kelvin Dela Pena then hit a pair of pressure freethrows each to seal the win for Mapua.

San Beda had a couple of chances to still pull out the win but just could not get anything going in the last 46 seconds of play.

Dela Pena led the Cardinals with 12 points and 11 rebounds and promptly declared that "We're coming back, we're coming back," in the post-game interview. "Everybody thinks I'm injured, well I'm back," declared the Mapua team captain right after power forward Neil Pascual gave him a comical kiss on the cheek.

Mapua played one of the best basketball halfs in recent memory. Unfortunately it was all in the first half. After going up by as much as 13 points in the first half the Cardinals inexplicably unraveled in the second half in the face of the tightened up zone defense of St Benilde. They also seemed to be moving in quicksand as the Blazers perimeter totally dissected the Mapua defense with hot perimeter shooting and strong drives to the rack. In the end the Blazers hacked out a well-deserved 63-53 win over the Cardinals.

Great game. Hats off to both teams for a stellar offensive game. Mapua cooled off early in the second half, while the Blazers kept their faith and kept fighting back. Fortress of the Cardinals? because they are "within the walls"

I support this one. Bagay din since the Mapua Cardinal's logo is a bird(cardinal, of course)
on top/in front of a fortress(or similar).

Mapua just handed Letran a critical loss this afternoon. Now Mapua is just on the outside looking in as far as the Final 4 goes. At 6-5 the Cardinals have three games left. They need to win all of those games to clear up the Final 4 picture for themselves. Unofficially I am looking at 10 wins for trouble-free entry into the Final 4. Should the Cardinals sweep their remaining three games that will give them only nine wins, which means their fate is not absolutely in their hands and there are two teams - San Sebastian and JRU - that each have eight wins already.

sir joescoundrel, 2 remaining games na lang po ang Cardinals, one against UPHD and the other against JRU, 7-5 na din po ang standing nila after the win against Letran. sana hindi ulit sila ma-choke againt Perpetual kasi coming off a big win tendency ng Cards na magrelax just like yung panalo versus SBC then followed by a loss versus CSB. Pag nanalo against Perpetual the JRU match will be crucial

One game missed automatically disqualifies you from grabbing the MVP plum. One game missed is already a lot considering when you compute your Player's All-around Value (PAV) bababa talaga ang statistical points mo.
Importante ang GAMES PLAYED when you compute for the PAV.

I am so happy with how Allan Mangahas is being involved in Mapua's rotation showing the stuff that he's made of. It was such a good thing that coach Leo has inserted Allan in his plans rather than putting Jonathan Banal ahead of Allan in the rotation and alternating both guys. His plan of putting a three-guard rotation was so effective and efficient in their game earlier against the taller JRU squad. The speed and pressure defense of Dela Pena, Banal, and Mangahas sucked the life out of the Heavy Bombers to stay alive in their final four bid.

Allan is already an integral part of Mapua's rotation so I guess it won't be a good decision for him to transfer elsewhere at this point. Besides next year, it might just be his team since KDP is already gone to the pros.

There are actually 3 Cardinals with La Salle connection. Randolph Soriano was actually a La Salle student already as far back as 2005, I think. He just couldn't crack La Salle's UAAP team and transferred to Mapua.

Mark Saranggay was supposed to join James Mangahas in joining the Archers back in 2005 via the PCU Baby Dolphins. While James would be put in the UAAP team immediately, Mark would be put in the training team. But that plan did not push through as Mark didn't enrol and left La Salle for San Beda before ending up in Mapua.

Allan Mangahas could've crack La Salle's UAAP lineup in 2006 but couldn't complete La Salle's academic requirements for freshmen back then. He played in a couple of off season tournaments with the Archers. And there's no truth to the rumor that La Salle is enticing him to come back.

Mapua lost to Letran earlier. Mapua will now take the long road to the final four.

As for the game itself, Allan Mangahas was the lone bright spot for the Cardinals. With his performance today, I think that seals his name on the Rookie of the Year trophy. Poor field goal shooting and the inability of the Cardinals' frontline of Mazo, Sarangay and Pascual to counter Dino Daa were the crucial factors in the game.

Its nice to see James Mangahas behind the Cardinals' bench to support his utol.

That was dangerous. Only inches away from banging her head to the hardwood. But she kept her poise and smile.

Ito ang mahirap sa Mapua. They have no inside game to complement their perimeter shooting. Yesterday was an example of how poorly their frontline players played.

Mapua lives to fight another day.

Kelvin Dela Pena played like the reigning MVP to lead the Cardinals to a huge upset of defending champion San Beda 53-51.

Dela Pena had 10 points in the first half as Mapua went up by as much as 12 points in the opening episode. It was enough cushion to survive a furious rally all throughout the second half by the Red Lions.

Ogie Menor carried the rusty Red Lions on his back in the third period as he brought San Beda within 37-35 but found little help from the rest of his teammates.

Pong Escobal went from potential hero to goat in the last 7.1 seconds of play: With Mapua up 53-51 he helped gang up on Ian Mazo, causing the gangling swingman to lose control of a Dela Pena inbound. In the ensuing play though he hurried a trey attempt when his coach Frankie Lim explicitly instructed them to take the ball strong to the rack. Escobal got the ball back with just a second left but simply had no shot.

Other heroes for the Cardinals include Mark Sarangay who played excellent denial defense on a highly frustrated Sam Ekwe, Neil Pascual who helped man the interior for Mapua, and Jonathan Banal who sank back to back treys late in the third to give a lot more breathing room for the Cardinals in the face of an intense San Beda rally.

Sam Ekwe looked totally off-kilter in this game and got perhaps the fewest looks and touches he's ever had all season long.

Dela Pena had 17 points and four assists while Banal added 10 points.

San Beda now faces the ignominious prospect of being ousted in the Final 4 with this confidence and momentum-building victory for the Cardinals; the Red Lions never led in this game.

Mapua now earns the distinction of being the only team to beat San Beda twice this season. Will they make it thrice and enter the Season 84 Finals?

Abangan...

I thought Kelvin tried too much to lead the Cardinals to the victory, he shot 5-of-22 from the field and had some poor shots in the end.

But I feel bad for KDLP, he's one of the best guards in college basketball and it's sad to see him end his way like this.

well, it was good until it lasted.

But certainly, MIT should have nothing to be ashamed of. They gave it all they've got in this game (and for the season). Unfortunately, the better team just walked home the victor today.

Of the 4 years that I have studied at MIT (and became a true-blooded Mapuan), I was able to witness 5 incarnations of Cardinals teams: the 2004 squad with Christian Guevarra and Erwin Sta. Maria, the 2005 team with then-rookie KDP, the Jofferson Gonzales-led 2006 team, last year's squad and this year. and I can honestly say that this year's squad has got to be the best and my favorite so far. Not only because the team overachieved in my opinion and reached the point where they are now (which is to be one game away from the finals and pushing the defending champs on the brink of elimination), but because it is on this team where I really saw the passion for winning, of rising through adversities and defying the odds, especially after seemingly having their foot outside the final four door numerous times. The team delivered when it mattered the most and, just like what I earlier said, the ride was fun until it lasted.

Congrats to the team. Lets get back at them next year. shock the NCAA at season 85!

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

The NCAA journey of Kelvin dela Peña has ended following yesterday’s loss to back-to-back champion San Beda in their sudden death.

“I’m dumbfounded, it’s my last year,” said dela Peña, whose superb all-around play won him the MVP plum last season. “Of course, I can’t say anything. But we lost to a great team, a champion team. Our road has ended today.”

Dela Pena went all-out in the game but his effort – 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, plus his leadership – proved not enough in preventing a loss for the Cardinals.

“I’m sad in a way but I gave it all, my best, my heart, sweat and blood to Mapua. I apologize to Mapua that it didn’t go our way,” said Dela Peña.

“Hopefully, there’s another player that would give the same dedication, the same heart as some of the guys did in this team. God bless the Mapua Cardinals,” he added.

The player Dela Peña was probably referring to was rookie Allan Mangahas.

“If he keeps his foot on the ground, stays humble and works hard, sky is the limit for that kid. Hands off to that kid, he’s my idol,” said Dela Pena, who will start practising with Alaska today. –Joey Villar

sayang...kinulang lang...dami pa mawawala na key players next...good job cardinals.

SBC will be the champs of ncaa 84

OT: ang formal ng mga nanonood kanina sa cuneta. matitino talaga yung SBC at MIT. hehehe

talagang matitino ;) walang jeering pag SBC-MIT ;)

You gave us a great fight... and for that, THANK YOU! The Red Lions will come out stronger in the finals because of this thrilling semi-final battle!

Animo San Beda!
Viva Mapua!

Ganyan na talaga dati pa.

Noong 1991 Finals between Mapua and San Beda, nagkaroon pa ng wave relay.

Tapos at the end of the game, walang asaran. Basically peaceful yung end.

Isa pang naalala ko sa 1991 Finals, nagconvoy ang mga San Beda students from Mendiola to Ultra. Solid sila talaga.

Just to add, marami nagsasabi na yung 1991 Finals Game 3 ay one of the Greatest games in the history of the NCAA.

OT:
I was present all series long during that year. There were a "few asaran" as I recall.
Katabi ko si Benjie Paras noong Game 3.
