^^^ Is it the same contest where a participant should convert 5 of 10 under time pressure?

Any details about the lineups, Coaches? And why so soon? Less than a week's notice for the game?

Also, is Admission for free, or not? If not, where can we buy tickets? Is it available at Ticketnet? TIA.

yes coach Frankie Lim and Franz Pumaren will call the shots.
We've historically always had the allstar game a week after the UAAP game ends, ayaw kasi namin silang guluhin pag finals week na e... ;D

will get the final lineups and send it by tomorrow....tickets are sold in the San Juan Arena on the day itself, punta na lang kayo dun, not sure of the price, but it's very cheap I'm sure...

That was the case before, at one time or another PCU and Letran had their stints at the Bantay Bata. Sa UAAP naman ay FEU. But outside their home leagues these schools are not well supported by their communities and could not generate enough interest. So, ginawang all-star ang format. ::)

I could not remember Studio 23 going on a Champion's format in a Bantay-Bata. In a tournament format ala Champion's League oo pero not in a Champion's format.

Bakit hindi subukan and this is the best time to try it out habang sikat ang mga kampeon. It already has leverage on generating interest.

The last time na nakapanood ako ng ganito sa TV (NCAA vs UAAP champion) was when Ateneo met Letran in 1987.

. . . . heheeh Gawain ko kasi yun. . . . hehehehe.

Sana San Beda - La Salle nalang. Sa Fil-Oil maganda ang dami ng crowd and for this kind of event PRIDE ang labanan tapos malaki pa ang maibibigay sa charity.

danny
10-12-2007, 01:23 AM
The format is ok with me. The objective is to give to charity. For this kind of event, PRIDE should take a backseat. This is about CHARITY and solidarity with the less fortunate kids.

No taking, just giving. ;)

MANILA, Philippines -- A showdown involving the season’s best collegiate teams unfolds Saturday when UAAP and NCAA basketball standouts clash in the Bantay Bata All-Star Game at The Arena in San Juan City.

Rico Maierhofer, JV Casio, TY Tang and JV Casio of newly crowned UAAP champion De La Salle University Green Archers will power the UAAP All-Stars, while Ogie Menor, Pong Escobal and Nigerian Sam Ekwe of back-to-back NCAA champion San Beda College will lead the NCAA side.

The face-off between the country’s top collegiate leagues starts at 4 p.m., right after the 2 p.m. side event that includes a slamdunk contest, a three-point competition and a two-ball shootout.

Also suiting up for the UAAP All-Stars are Mark Borboran and Marcy Arellano of runner-up University of the East, Ateneo de Manila University big men Ford Arao and Nonoy Baclao, University of Santo Tomas guards Japs Cuan and Dylan Ababou, Far Eastern University’s Mac Baracael, National University’s Edwin Asoro, Adamson University’s Roel Hugnatan and University of the Philippines rookie Mike Gamboa.

Franz Pumaren will call the shots, but the multi-titled La Salle coach will miss the services of UST star Jervy Cruz, this season’s Most Valuable Player, and streak shooters Patrick Cabahug of Adamson and NU’s Jonathan Fernandez. The three are training with the all-amateur Philippine team in South Korea.

San Beda coach Frankie Lim will mentor the NCAA crew bannered by MVP Kelvin Dela Peña of Mapua Institute of Technology, Rafael Jazul, Bryan Faundo and Dino Daa of runner-up Letran College, San Beda’s Borgie Hermida and David Marcelo, Jose Rizal's James Sena and John Wilson and University of Perpetual Help's Michael Kong and San Sebastian College’s Jason Ballesteros.

As much as a La Salle-SBC game will be interesting, I don't think the attendance shown during one of their FilOil (?) championship matches makes for much encouragement.

Besides, the event's a charity event.

(Of course, I think a good charity event would have been a SIXTH Ateneo-La Salle game, but that's me being biased.)

College stars collide in Bantay showdown
abs-cbnnews.com

The Samsung-Bantay Bata 163 All-Star Game fires off Saturday with the best players from the UAAP and NCAA’s finest cagers clashing at The Arena in San Juan.

Franz Pumaren, who recently steered De La Salle to its seventh UAAP title overall over University of the East, will handle the UAAP side while Frankie Lim, coach of the back-to-back champion San Beda squad, will handle the NCAA squad.

"I don’t want to promise anything, all I can say is that the UAAP will be competitive," said Pumaren, who swept younger brother Dindo and the University of the East in the UAAP finale.

The UAAP, which beat the NCAA, 83-78, last year, will be led by La Salle standouts Cholo Villanueva, TY Tang, JV Casio and Rico Maeirhofer and UE hotshots Mark Borboran and Marcy Arellano.

The rest of the squad will be composed of Ateneo’s Ford Arao and Nonoy Baclao, UST’s Dylan Ababou and Japs Cuan, Far Eastern U’s Mac Baracael, National U’s Edwin Asoro, Adamson’s Roel Hugnatan and State U’s Mike Gamboa.

UAAP MVP Jervy Cruz of UST, Patrick Cabahug of Adamson and Jonathan Fernandez of NU were selected but they will not be around since they are currently with the Harbour Centre-backed RP team playing a series of tuneup games in Korea as part of the squad’s preparation for the 24th Southeast Asian Games set Dec. 6-16 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

"For my four guys, JV, TY, Cholo and Rico, I can’t demand everything on them since they are not in great shape after winning the championship. I have 10 guys who I expect to step up," said Pumaren.

Ateneo star Chris Tiu was also picked but he too is unavailable because he is still on vacation in the US.

The NCAA, for its part, will be bannered by Nigerian behemoth Sam Ekwe, Dave Marcelo, Ogie Menor, Pong Escobal and Borgie Hermida from San Beda, reigning MVP Kelvin dela Peña of Mapua, Bryan Faundo, RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra of Letran, John Sena and John Wilson of Jose Rizal, Jason Ballesteros of San Sebastian, Mike Kong of Perpetual Help and Martin Urra of St. Benilde.

Spicing up the day-long festivities, held to raise funds for the children of Bantay Bata 163, are the slam dunk contest, a three-point shootout and a 2-ball event starting at 2 p.m.

Before the game today, Bantay Bata (c/o Tina Monzon Palma) acknowledged receipt of a gift of four Samsung television sets and a check for more than P140,000 which was the amount raised from last year's game. We won't know how much today's events raised until next year. The venue didn't look too full today, though.

Just came from The Arena in San Juan to watch the UAAP-NCAA All-Star Games. What else can I say but PANALO ANG LAHAT! It was fun, fun, fun watching the game. The UAAP boys were relaxed. the NCAA boys were also a bit relaxed although some of them took the game quite seriously. I loved the UAAP boys' reaction to Sam Ekwe's shooting but took me by surprise was the kind of solution employed by the UAAP team to address the Sam Ekwe problem- ANG LUMIPAD SA IBABAW NI EKWE. :o

JV, Rico, Cholo and TY, grabe! ;D

Yes, hindi napuno ang The Arena in San Juan kanina. Yung kabilang side, halos walang tao. The crowd probably numbered between 1,000 and 2,000.

hahaha tawa din nga ko sa dunk ni ekwe, ganda ng laro ni ekwe nung fourth quarter when the game is on the line, nung 1st to 3rd quarter natitirahan sya harapan nila ababou pero may crucial blocks sya nung last quarter.

most quality minutes si asoro.

** Was able to watch the 2007 Bantay-Bata UAAP vs. NCAA All Star Game over at "The Arena" in San Juan.* Despite the cheap ticket prices, "The Arena" was only about a third full.

** 3 Pt. Shootout
-* The competition was mainly boring, until SBC's JR Tecson started hitting shots one after the other, on his way to 20 pts. in the eliminations.* JV Casio shot next, & nearly equaled that w/ 19 pts.* RJ Jazul shot last, & also shot 19 pts.
-* JV advanced to the Finals for the UAAP All-Stars, while Tecson advanced for the NCAA All-Stars.
-* Tecson was a disappointment in the finals, hitting only 6 pts., while JV improved on his score to 23 pts.* Which is probably why JV is the Starting Point Guard of a champion team.

** Slam Dunk Competition
-* The slam dunk competition was kinda mainly lame, but in fairness Guevarra did deserve to win w/ his consistent & pretty good dunks.* Ekwe had the better dunk, but did it after the alloted time.

** The UAAP All-Stars initially showed much better passing plays on the half court, & better fastbreak plays in the open court, racing to a double-digit lead in the 1st half.* The NCAA All-Stars, though, settled down in the 2nd half & started finding their groove, overhauling the deficit & finally lead by as much as 6, & from there they never relinquished the lead.* The UAAP All-Stars had the chance to equalize or cut down the lead in the last minute, but their outside shots just weren't falling in.

UAAP All-Stars

** Ford Arao (ADMU)
-* Has definitely turned into a great offensive player.* He was hitting from all angles w/ those outside / hook / fadeaway shots, & getting away from no less than Sam Ekwe himself w/ those neat spin moves.* Just makes me wonder why he had to wait 5 full seasons in Ateneo before unloading such a spectacular offensive repertoire.
-* W/ his fine performance against Sam, I think this guy is definitely ready for the pros in 2008.* Could be a valuable addition, too, to the SEA National Team.

** JV Casio (DLSU)
-* JV, just like Jazul, bought his 3 pt. shootout results to the game, hitting a couple of critical 3 pt. shots.* Very steady at point, had a couple of nifty passes early in the game.* Kinda short, visibly shorter than Jazul or Dela Pena, but I think he has what it takes to reach the pros.* Should've never left Mendiola.*

NCAA All-Stars

** RJ Jazul (Letran)
-* Jazul made me a believer in this game.* Good height for a guard (around 6'0"), fast, quick, & a terrific ballhandler, he is also a terrific outside shot, as shown in the 3 pt. competition.* Pretty good playmaker, too, very steady at the point.* Spent a lot of minutes on the floor at no. 1, at least until he fouled out, a testament to Coach Frankie Lim's confidence on his playmaking & offensive abilities.
-* Deserved at least half of that All-Star MVP Award, being the critical half of the "Jazul & Menor Show" in the 3rd Qtr.
-* The future is bright for this guy, possibly all the way to the pros.

** Ogie Menor (SBC)
-* Was a huge disappointment in the 1st Qtr. as a starter at no. 3, missing his 1st 6 shots, & making a couple of turnovers.*
-* Switched to no. 2 in the 3rd Qtr., & just ..... exploded out there on the court.* Menor is most dangerous in the open court & when facing the basket at half court, because it's where he can & did beat everybody out there in the court off the dribble w/ his spectacular 1st step.* Once inside the paint, he had enough leaping ability & upper body strength to make those difficult layups.* He tore the lane again, & again, & scored on layups.*
-* Great athleticism, in spurts he was easily the fastest player there on the court, streaking back & forth on both ends of the floor.
-* Didn't just make an impact on offense, but on defense, too, making at least 3 steals in the "Jazul & Menor Show" in the 3rd Qtr.
-* W/ a little more mental toughness & outside shooting, Menor's potential is limitless.* *

** Sam Ekwe (SBC)
-* Sam's game has matured, or "finessed" a lot.* There were no rim-rattling dunks this time, only a lot of mid-range floaters on offense.
-* Had 3 such field goals, 2 free throws & 2 blocks in the last 3 min. of the game, helping seal the win for the NCAA All-Stars.

** Kevin Dela Pena (MIT)
-* Good height & heft at no. 1 (est. around 6'1"), & a great ballhandler
-* But he didn't seem to be as good an outside shot as Jazul.* His penetrations weren't that great either.* Playmaking, he was manning the point when the UAAP All-Stars went into that 14 pt. lead in the 2nd Qtr.* Probably just had an off night.

Ogie, Borgie, Dave, Tecson, JV and Ford sa All-star event speaks for it.

Congrats to Jazul. Frankie respects what that guy can do. In fact, kailangang asawahin yan ni Ogie most of the time pag SBC-Letran game.

Offensively, I believe Ford has what it takes to make it to the Pro. If there is one aspect of his game that he should work on his rebounding and interior defense. The improvement is because of the US training.

Lastly, lets accept that Sam is not the type of highlight dunker. He is more of a power dunker. Abangan nyo ang slam dunk contest next year at the year after next. Pipo, Kave and Emeka. I'd like see either Canaleta or Intal shouting ala-KG reaction dun sa dunk ni Carter. "Its ovarhhh ladies and gentlemen!! Its ovahhh!" ;D ;D

KDP is more of a half-court type of PG. Banal, Co and all others are the guys doing the slash/cutters. Unfamiliarity with his teammates and system ni Frankie ang naging set-back. Naliligaw yong karamihan kung saan ppwesto and more often yong galaw nung mga players mismo ang nagcocover sa sarili nila. When they find it hard to attack inside, they settle with outside shots. Most of those shots resulted to long rebounds and UAAP guys knows the best time to attack is habang wala pa ang frontcourt ng NCAA sa depensa.

well without any malice intended, it was evident that the NCAA team was dead serious in winning as compared to a UAAP side that was just jacking up ill advised shots and didnt exactly play D. Coach frankie lim was shouting out plays and was standing up during the last 2 minutes while franz seemed he couldnt care less..nag practice pa daw ang NC sabi ng commentators pero ang UAAP dun na lang nagkita.. ;D

I think the case with UE is pag hindi seryoso, they are relax. When they are relaxed, they play better... ;D ;D ;D

About hindi sineryoso issue. Even before the game started most of UAAP fans knows tagilid sila kung line-up ang pag-uusapan. NCAA has definite advantage sa frontcourt. UAAP sa backcourt siguro but not that much. Overall, titingnan mo palang yong line-up taking the playing system most will yamado NCAA.

Sa actual game, first half halatang me kalawang yong NCAA (except for Jazul). UAAP took advantage and dun sila lumamang. Nung kumakamada sina Menor and Jazul nung 3rd quarter, Franz brought out the best player to counter NCAA. Mainit lang talaga sina Menor at Jazul. Patapos na ang laro, nagfofoul parin ang UAAP fishing for missed FTs and then counter attack.

I agree that the UAAP All Stars and their coaching staff didn't appear to be all that serious about winning the game last Saturday. Having said that, I don't think they deserve to be given some slack, much less, praised for not putting their hearts into the game. I think the couple of thousand fans who watched the game live, the couple thousand more (including me) who watched on TV, and the kids who were the beneficiaries of this charity event, deserved to see a more spirited effort from them. Generally, the NCAA players and coaches had their gamefaces on and played hardcore basketball all throughout the game.

Pahabol lang, congrats to Vicmel and Martin, who, right off the bat, appeared to be dead serious in winning the 2-ball event!

UP Fight!

For the sake of world peace, I agree with you blade.

Of course we all know that this is a fun game. And Frankie knows that, he himself that it is only a fun game and whoever exerts more effort will win the game.* As if we are taking the victory seriously.* *;D

Ok,* next year we will tell the coach (si Frankie Lim ulit* ;D) and the players (Ogie, Sam, Jazul and Kelvin) na huwag mag seryoso sa laro at magpatalo na lang para wala ng isyu.* *

This is the reason why I said that it would have been just better if the winners were congratulated.

This is my final say. Am out for lunch.

cogratulations to the NCAA for winning this edition of the Bantay Bata All Star Game.

Wala kasi sina Jervy Cruz, Chris Tiu at Jonathan Fernandez. ;D

Im also questioning the inclusion of Baclao sa All Star line up? ;D

The players should always play their best in the Bantay-Bata. Pag ganun, the annual game will gain interest, more fans will buy tickets and ultimately the kids will benefit.

Congratulations sa NCAA team.

We can't expect the players to play their best if the Bantay-Bata is scheduled right after the NCAA and UAAP tournament. The big league games are so intense, parang cooling off phase na ang players pagdating ng Bantay-Bata. Kahit yung crowd, you won't expect them to come in droves.

this could have been more exciting if it was an ncaa vs. uaap champions showdown...fans support from the schools though limited to two schools would be more than the crowd of the last bantay-bata allstar game....competition would be more exciting as the team schools want to win and show who really is the champion of collegiate basketball..even if it was just an exhibition game....it may be the only chance to put this two teams in a showdown ...as the collegiate champions league knock-out format may not give them the chance to meet in the finals..... all this for the benefit of the bantay-bata foundation...the winner may eventually be called the BANTAY-BATA ALL-COLLEGIATE CHAMPION....and if this showdown turns out to be that exciting, it can be made into a best of three series...

hindi naman dahil sa sinasabi namin na di sineryoso ng UAAP yung game kaya sila natalo.. pero it does seem like it eh. simula pa lng iba na, si coach franz pa smile smile lng hehe. same lang naman yun laro nila nun first half and second half eh, kaibahan lng mas pumapasok yun mga shots nila nun first half.

siguro mali lang dn yun statement na di nila sineryoso yun game, let's just say mas relax sila. kahit nakahabol at nakalamang na ang NC, parang ok lng sa kanila alam mo yun. tingnan nyo na lng yun part na may chance sila to tie the game kc 3 points lng naman, ilan sila na nagthree pero walang pumasok sa mga shots nila.. yun reaction nila iba eh, natawa na lng sila heheü i didn't watch the game live, sa tv lng. pero from what i heard, makikita mo tlga na iba ang dating ng UAAP eh, they were having fun tlga. kung titingnan mo dn, ilan ba ang naglaro sa NCAA? makikita mo talaga na matagal ang nilaro nila Jazul, Ekwe, Menor at Dela Peña. Sa UAAP naman, halos same talaga ang playing time ng lahat.

anyway, congratulations to the NCAA All-Star team!ü to the UAAP All-Stars, congrats din! (di nman mashado delayed ano haha) it was nice to see Cholo, Rico and Marcy having fun heheü

Sa totoo lang Lion, P150,0000 is a very small amount for this kind of charitable games.

naalala ko dati yung bantay bata parang tournament yung format single round robin tapos semis at finals, tapos nagkaron ng nc south vs uaap north at nc south vs uaap south, tapos last year allstar juniors saka allstar seniors.

next year sana two games first game champions sa nc vs champions sa uaap tapos next game the actual allstar minus yung mga players sa champion team. tingin ko mas marami manunuod and eventual yung mga bata ang winners.

next year kaya may bantay-bata? pag naout-bid ng gma7 ang abscbn sa uaap, baka goodbye bantay bata for next year.

congratulation nc.
