* * *With Landmaster on top by two, 80-78, Richard Ian Saladaga's game-long brilliance almost went to naught as he fouled Warrior Apol Coronado at the three-point line with 1.8 ticks to play.* The Mandaue quintet's fears turned into joy as Coronado missed all his three free throws and Harold Santa Cruz grabbed the defensive rebound to preserve the win.

* * *Landmaster of Joe Soberano and Mayor Jonas Cortes used a 10-0 run to end the third canto, 64-54.* The Warriors of boxing idol Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido then clawed back behind the combined 15 markers of Coronado and Weng Farochillen to threaten.* Roderick Ramos added two free throws to threaten for the last time, 78-79, and 1:21 to go.* Mark Yee then split his free throws off Erian Daja with 7.6 seconds left to give Landmaster breathing space, 80-78.

* * *Yee led Landmaster with 13 points, five coming in the crucial final quarter, followed by Saladaga with 12.* Rolly Menor topped the Warriors with 21 points but none of his teammates submitted double-digits.

* * *CEBU CITY - Defending champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City used a balanced attack to smash the MP Warriors-GenSan in the second day of hostilities at the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference at the New Cebu Coliseum.

* * *In a rematch of last year's First Conference finals, M. Lhuillier of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba reasserted their mastery over the wards of boxing idol Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido.

* * *The Jewelers raced to a 15-8 lead after the first period.* Not even the arrival of Pacquiao before the second period could spark the Warriors as the Jewelers pulled away by halftime, 35-21.

* * *Then the floodgates burst open as Jayford Rodriguez with help from Ron Capati and Jett Latonio ignited a 14-2 blast to windup the third canto, 68-35.* Lou Gatumbato buried two triples early in the final quarter to push M. Lhuillier to its biggest lead, 74-37.* From there, the Jewelers coasted to the win, allowing Louie Medalla and Rolly Menor to trim the Warriors' deficit to a more respectable level.

The formidable M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City Jewelers did not need any end-game drama to dispatch the MP Warriors-GenSan as it routed the Manny Pacquiao-owned squad, 83-66, on Tuesday night in the 2007 MVBA Second Conference at the Cebu Coliseum.

Unlike their 78-80 loss to the Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue last Sunday, the Warriors failed to get their game going against the mighty Jewelers, who dominated the contest right from the opening buzzer to the end.

The Jewelers led by seven points at the end of the first period, 15-8, before erecting a 35-21 lead at the bend.

Led by Jayford Rodriguez, former College of St. Benilde Blazer Ronald Capati and Jett Latonio, the Jewelers stepped on the gas in the third by scoring 30 points while holding the struggling Warriors to just 14 points, resulting to a huge 65-35 lead heading into the final period.

Rodriguez was actually the lone Jeweler to score in double figures but he had 10 teammates scoring at least five points.

In that decisive third quarter run, Rodriguez and Capati scored seven points each while Latonio added six.

Rolly Menor scored 19 points, a good follow-up to his 21-point performance in the Warriors' painful loss to the Landmasters, where Apol Coronado missed three potential game-winning freethrows in the final 1.8 seconds.

Coronado failed to redeem himself from that boo-boo as he only managed six points in yesterday's game, which was attended by Pacquiao.

The Warriors will try to finally barge into the win column when they face Arthro Kontra Arthritis today still at the Cebu Coliseum.

BOX SCORES:
LHUILLIER (83)- Rodriguez 12, Aying 9, Basco 8, Capati 8, Gatumbato 8, Dacia 8, Padilla 6, Latonio 6, Caputolan 6, Cavan 5, Enriquez 5, Piodo 2.

* * *Roderick Ramos made two big triples to erect a 68-59 lead with 3:14 to play, quenching a searing Arthro rally that saw the wards of Jonathan Guardo and Coach Al Solis close in, 58-62.

* * *Not willing to quit, Bernie Ursal and Alex Cainglet gave it a final push as they threatened for the last time, 66-70, on an Ursal free throw at the 39-second mark.* In the ensuing play, Jomer Rubi missed a triple but Jasper Callo grabbed the offensive rebound plus a foul on Rubi.* Rubi then hit four crucial free throws in the final 14 seconds to preserve the win, their first in the community-based league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

* * Harold Santa Cruz banged in a free throw with 44.5 ticks to go in the contest that broke an 81-81 tie and put Landmaster on top, 82-81.* Woodrow Enriquez then drew a foul from Mike Manigo only to miss both shots and Mark Yee grabbed the defensive rebound from the hands of Ron Capati plus a foul.* Yee made only one charity to settle the final count with 26.1 remaining.

* * *In the final sequence of the game, Marlon Basco fired a jumper from the corner that bounced off the rim and into the hands of Enriquez who drove strong to the basket with a second to go.* Enriquez was fouled but the table officials ruled that the foul came after the buzzer sounded, thus igniting the pro-Landmaster gallery’s celebration.

* * *Enriquez put M. Lhuillier on top for the last time with a buzzer-beating triple at the end of the third period, 62-60.* From there, Manigo restored the lead with a triple to begin the final period and with help from Bong Marata and Christian Nicdao never relinquished the lead.* The best that M. 5:30 p.m.- M. Lhuillier vs. Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue

Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue and M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City shoot for their second straight win at each other’s expense as they face off in today’s lone match of the 2007 MVBA Second Conference at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

The two protagonists share the top spot of the standings with identical 1-0 (win-loss) slates.

The Landmasters started their campaign with a close 80-78 win over the MP Warriors-GenSan—the same squad that the Jewelers trampled, 83-66.

Cebu Landmasters of team owner Joe Soberano and coach Jun Tan and M. Lhuillier of businessman Michel Lhuillier and coach Yayoy Alcoseba are the two favored in the tournament owing to their strong lineups.

In the paint, the Landmasters will rely on hardworking Mark Yee, Harold Sta. Cruz, Christian Nicdao, Jan Montalbo and Rex Mangubat while the Jewelers’ inside attack will be led by Ron Capati, Marlon Piodo, Marlon Basco and Alano Caputolan.

The Landmasters will also bank on guards Ian Saladaga, Mike Manigo, Jimwell Torion, Bong Marata and Aries Gloria.

M. Lhuilier’s perimeter points will be delivered by Jayford Rodriguez, Danny Aying, Lou Gatumbato, Bruce Dacia, Stephen Padilla, Jett Latonio, Woodrow Enriquez and Gerry Cavan.

In their previous outings, Yee, Saladaga and Manigo all scored in double figures while Rodriguez was the lone twin digit scorer for the Jewelers but had 10 other teammates submitting at least five points. Correspondent Calvin D. Cordova

* * *Bong Marata clustered five straight points to threaten of the last time, 81-85.* From there, Arthro of sports patron Jonathan Guardo and Coach Al Solis scored the final eight points of the otherwise tight contest, employing a confusing defense that sent Landmaster into a maze of errors and forced shots.

* * *CAGAYAN DE ORO – M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City needed an extra five minutes to dispose of debuting Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 81-76, to open hostilities in Mindanao for the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference Friday night (September 28).

* * *Woodrow Enriquez scored six of M. Lhuillier’s 10 points in overtime, including a three-point play with 2:11 left that put them ahead for good, 75-73.* MisOr would threaten for the last time on a drive by Dennis Concha, 75-77, but Enriquez quickly cooled MisOr with a pair of free throws off Mark Moreño with 23 ticks remaining, 79-75.

* * *M. Lhuillier then sent Mark Abadia to the foul line with 16 seconds to go, but he could only make the first with Bruce Dacia grabbing the defensive rebound off the second attempt.* Dacia was quickly fouled by Nathaniel Cruz, making both his shots for the final tally.

* * *Earlier, Concha sent the game into overtime via an easy under-goal stab off a drop pass from Anton Viloria with three seconds left in regulation.* That capped a furious windup that saw MisOr rally from seven points down with 2:45 in the balance, 63-70, limiting M. * * *DIGOS CITY – The MP Warriors-GenSan scored their first Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) win over M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City, 86-70, Saturday (September 29) at the Digos City Stadium.

* * *Winless against the team since the league began last year, the Warriors of boxing idol Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido pounced on a visibly fatigued M. Lhuillier side in the second half.* The Warriors held the Jewelers sans a field goal in the last 5:23 while unloading 12 points – eight coming from Erian Daja and four from Rolly Menor.* The best the Jewelers could do was to sink three free throws.

* * *M. Lhuillier entered the game barely rested from an eight-hour land trip from Cagayan de Oro City where they defeated Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr in overtime the night earlier, 81-76.* Ronald Capati gave M. Lhuillier its last taste of the lead, 51-50, midway through the third period.* Daja answered with four straight points and the Warriors never looked back, 54-51.

* * *Despite the trip, the Jewelers still looked sharp in the first half as Coach Raul Alcoseba shuffled his players in order to keep fresh legs on the floor.* Behind the good plays of Bruce Dacia and Gerry Cavan, M. Lhuillier led at halftime, 42-40.

MVBA officials ready to impose penalty on Landmasters coach

Cebu Daily News
Last updated 12:00nn (Mla time) 09/28/2007

CEBU CITY, Philippines - The Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) is ready to fine or even suspend Cebu Landmasters-Mandaue coach Jun Tan.

Visayas Commissioner Boy Murillo, Mindanao Commissioner Willy Generalao and BAP-SBP Chao Sy will lead the imposition of the penalty that stemmed from Tan's remarks after the Landmasters' 81-93 loss to Arthro Kontra Arthritis last Monday at the Cebu Coliseum.

In that game, Tan complained of poor officiating, saying that it was the first time in his coaching career that he saw that kind of officiating.

Last Wednesday, league officials sent a letter to Tan offering him a meeting to review the tape of the said game. Tan, however, did not show up.

In the letter, the MVBA urged Tan to explain the remarks he made that was printed on Cebu Daly News (CDN), the only paper that carried the story.

“We just wanted to get his side and show us in which part of the game that the referees made their mistakes,” said Murillo, who earlier said he won't initiate a move to have a dialog with Tan.

“We also wanted him to explain the report that came out in CDN where he criticized the referees,” Murillo added.

Murillo reiterated that the league is fair to all the teams and will not allow biased officiating to happen.

In a separate interview, Tan admitted that he received the letter but opted to snub the meeting.

“As what I have read in your newspaper, I thought they are not going to initiate a meeting and that's why I was surprised when they informed me that they wanted to see me,” said Tan.

“That meeting was unnecessary,” added Tan without elaborating.

Tan said he is ready to accept whatever penalty the league will impose on him.

“It's up to them. That will be fine for me,” said Tan.

Tan said he is still firm on his decision to resign and he is just waiting for the final decision of team owner Joe Soberano, who just arrived from Thailand.

“I'm still ready to resign but if my boss will tell me to finish the conference, then I will stay,” said Tan. /Correspondent Calvin D. Cordova

Cebu Daily News
Last updated 04:47pm (Mla time) 10/01/2007

CEBU CITY, Philippines - The MP Warriors-GenSan Warriors registered their first ever win over the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City Jewelers via an 86-70 conquest last Saturday in the 2007 MVBA Second Conference at the Digos City Stadium.

Fatigue heavily contributed to the downfall of the Jewelers, who entered the match fresh from an eight-hour bus trip from Cagayan de Oro City, where they played MisOr last Friday.

It was only the first win by GenSan over M. Lhuillier since the league’s inception last year.

Visibly affected by the long arduous trip, the Jewelers did not have the needed legs to finish the game as they failed to make even a single fieldgoal in the final 5:23.

M. Lhuillier could only cough up three points in that stretch, all came from the freethrow line.

While holding the Jewelers to only three markers in the final 5:23, the Warriors unloaded 12 points to seal their second win four games.

Despite the lack of rest, the Jewelers, behind the hot hands of Bruce Dacia, managed to stay within striking distance in the first half and even managed to post a 42-40 lead at the bend.

Dacia scored all of his 16 points in the second quarter.

The Jewelers finally ran out of gas in the second half, allowing the Warriors to take a 54-46 lead, heading into the final quarter.

Erian Daja top scored for the Warriors with 18 points and nine rebounds while Rolly Menor added 16. Donald Tadena pitched in 12 points.

Ronald Capati was the only other Jeweler in double figures with 12 markers as M. Lhuillier crashed to its second loss in four games.

As of press time, M. Lhuillier was still playing the debuting Duterte Davao Agilas at the Almendras Gym in Davao City.

Coming off an 70-86 loss to the MP Warriors-GenSan, the Jewelers went to work early and took a 49-34 lead at the half.

Landmasters take a shot at revenge

Cebu Daily News
Last updated 02:10pm (Mla time) 10/16/2007

Game today (October 16, 2007):
(Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex)
5:30 p.m.- Arthro vs. Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue

Mandaue City, Philippines - The Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue tries to exact revenge on previous tormentor Arthro Kontra Arthritis when both collide on Tuesday in the 2007 MVBA Second Conference at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Holding the top spot in the Visayas Division, the Landmasters currently have six wins and only one loss coming at the hands of Arthro on September 24.

It was a controversial loss for Mandaue as coach Jun Tan complained of poor officiating and threatened to resign if the officiating would not improve.

For his remarks, the league slapped Tan a P3,000 fine.

The Landmasters have completely recovered from that loss and have won their last four games to stay on top of the standings.

UV TO THE RESCUE
Arthro, on the other hand, is expected to get the needed reinforcement as several collegiate standouts are reportedly suiting up for the Al Solis-coached squad for Tuesday’s game.

With the Cesafi over now, University of the Visayas' 6'11" Filipino-American Gregory Fuentes Slaughter, 6'7" Rino Berame and 6'4" Michael Luga might play for Arthro, which is in the bottom of the Visayas Division with a 2-3 (win-loss) record.

The trio could provide the needed support to Arthro’s mainstays Alex Cainglet, Mark Ababon, Ronald Bucao and Doroteo Almacin.

Arthro just snapped a two-game slide after beating the Davao-Duterte Agilas, 104-91.

The Landmasters will bank on Mark Yee, Mike Manigo, Richard Ian Saladaga, Bong Marata, Christian Nicdao, Harold Santa Cruz, Rex Mangubat and Jan Montalbo. /Correspondent Calvin D. Cordov

LANDMASTER GETS BACK AT ARTHRO, 83-70

* * *MANDAUE CITY - Cebu Landmaster exacted revenge on its lone tormentor Arthro Kontra Arthritis, 83-70, last Tuesday in Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) 2007 Second Conference hostilities at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

* * *Veteran Bong Marata exploded for 13 points as he pushed Landmaster to a 45-28 halftime advantage.* The wards of Coach Jun Tan then erected their biggest lead of the contest at 20 markers, 48-28, early in the third canto.

* * *Arthro of sports patron Jonathan "Atan" Guardo and Coach Al Solis gamely fought back as Alex Cainglet and Mark Ababon slowly ate away at Landmaster's lead.* The prolific duo accounted for 19 of Arthro's points in the third quarter to close in entering the final 10 minutes.

* * *The rest of the Arthro crew then took over, coming to their closest at six points several times, the last coming at the 53-second mark on an Ababon free throw split. Both teams then swapped failed offensives until Mike Manigo nailed a booming triple with 19 seconds to play that assured the Landmaster win.* Mark Yee added two more free throws and a dunk at the buzzer for the final tally.

* * *Yee finished with 19 points followed by Marata with 17.* Cainglet led Arthro with 23 points while Bernie Ursal added 12.

* * *The Joe Soberano-owned franchise thus roared to its fifth consecutive victory and maintained its top ranking with a 7-1 win-loss card in the six-team league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and supported generously by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.* Arthro fell to 2-4.

* * *Arthro welcomed the return of University of the Visayas stalwarts Rino Berame and Michael Luga to their roster.* The Lancer pair played key roles in Arthro's annexation of the First Conference Visayas Division title earlier this year.* However, the big crowd failed to see Gregory Slaughter after the 6'11" center was not given permission by UV officials to join the team.

M. LHUILLIER NUMERO UNO AGAIN

* * *CEBU CITY – Defending champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City wrested the top spot of the standings of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference by blowing away erstwhile leader Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue, 86-67, last Friday (October 19) at the New Cebu Coliseum.

* * *Both teams now tote similar 7-2 win-loss cards but M. Lhuillier holds the point differential tiebreaker.* The Jewelers of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba avenged their 81-83 squeaker of a loss to Landmaster last September 21 in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

* * *This time, M. Lhuillier made sure the outcome would be decided early and clearly.* From a 10-10 standoff, Marlon Basco keyed a 10-4 run to give the Jewelers the lead for good after the first quarter, 20-14.

* * *Basco continued his offensive explosion by combining with Bruce Dacia for eight of their side’s next 16 points to pull away by halftime, 36-23.* Basco also shone on defense, helping limit Landmaster to only nine markers in the second canto.* Landmaster gave up 17 turnovers, six short of their point total.

* * *Landmaster of Joe Soberano, Mayor Jonas Cortes and Coach Jun Tan suddenly sprung back to life via a 16-5 salvo to open the third quarter led by Bong Marata and Richard Ian Saladaga that saw them threaten, 39-41.* However, Basco found new scoring partners in Gerry Cavan and Jett Latonio to restore their comfortable lead entering the final period, 64-42.

* * *It was smooth sailing from there as M. Lhuillier was never threatened.* Danny Aying fired a triple that erected the biggest lead of the game, 71-46, early in the final period.* Landmaster simply did their best to trim the final deficit behind the late forays of Marata, Christian Nicdao, Allain Abellanosa and Jimwell Torion.

* * *The Jewelers’ victory was marred by the ejection of Cavan with 3:27 to play after he landed a cheap shot on Harold Santa Cruz that sent the Landmaster forward grimacing in pain on the floor.* Overall, both teams coughed out a combined 51 turnovers, 29 against Landmaster.

* * *Basco and Cavan led M. Lhuillier with 16 points each followed by Latonio with 12.* Marata paced Landmaster with 17 while Saladaga added 14.* The usually prolific pair of Mark Yee and Mike Manigo could only combine for seven points, with Manigo sustaining an ankle injury just before halftime.

* * *The MVBA takes a break and will resume games on November 5 with Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr visiting Arthro Kontra Arthritis and the Cebu Coliseum.* During the break, selected MVBA teams have been invited to see action in the Niyogan Festival Basketball Tournament in Baganga, Davao Oriental from October 23 to 27.* The five-day tournament has put up a total of 280,000 pesos in cash prizes for the winners.

ARTHRO ZAPS MISOR, 83-70

* * *CEBU CITY - Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu pounced on an erratic Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr quintet to carve out an 83-70 triumph Monday night at the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference at the New Cebu Coliseum.

* * *Rino Berame scored six points in the last 90 seconds of the game to seal the deal for Arthro of Jonathan Guardo and Coach Al Solis, their third win in six starts.* With MisOr threatening, 69-75, the 6'7" Berame received a blind pass from Ronald Bucao for an easy twinner under the basket.* Berame then added two free throws and another basket to raise their lead to 12, 81-69, and less than a minute to go.* A free throw by Lowell Briones and a dunk at the buzzer by Michael Luga settled the final tally.

* * *With MisOr leading, 21-19, at the end of the first period, Arthro's defense forced MisOr to commit 10 turnovers in the second period.* That resulted in a 20-5 run that erected a 13-point Arthro lead, 39-26.* Halftime score was pegged at 44-33.

* * *Not giving up easily, MisOr coach Bong Abad plucked Rocky Sanchez from the bench and the former NU Bulldog responded with a series of highlight reel plays that energized his teammates and the fans in attendance. Sanchez then joined Randy Sevilla and Briones in an 8-0 run that put MisOr at its closest, 69-75, with still 1:37 to play.

* * *Berame finished with 12 points on top of seven rebounds.* Doroteo Almacin followed with 11 points, nine in the first half.* Luga, Mark Jonas Ababon and Luther Luke Justiniani all had 10 points.* Sanchez scored all his 14 markers in the second half.* Sevilla chipped in 13 as MisOr played without scoring leader Nathaniel Cruz who was sidelined with a back injury.* MisOr dropped to 2-3 but maintained a half-game lead over the idle MP Warriors-GenSan for the top spot in the Mindanao Division standings of the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

* * *This marks the fourth time in as many conferences that the Jewelers of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba have topped the league standings.* M. Lhuillier tallied its eighth win in 10 games, half a game ahead of Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue.* Even if Landmaster manages to win its final assignment against MisOr tonight, the Jewelers hold the tiebreaker.

* * *MisOr of league chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Bong Abad put up a gallant stand, managing to deadlock the game several times, the last at 65-65 on daredevil drive by Ramil Tagupa at the 3:08 mark.* From there, M. Lhuillier's defense went to work and held MisOr scoreless while knocking in five straight free throws, 70-65.* Ronald Capati then stole the MisOr inbound pass for an easy lay-up to erect an unassailable seven-point lead, 72-65, with 1:49 to play.

* * *M. Lhuillier built its biggest lead of the game at halftime, 35-25, by scoring the half's final nine markers behind Bruce Dacia, Marlon Basco and Capati.* Earlier in the first period, Capati gave the Jewelers the lead for good, 13-11, on back-to-back baskets.

* * *Tagupa combined well with big men Frank Nailon and Randy Sevilla in constantly putting the pressure on M. Lhuillier, preventing a blowout from taking place. * * *Landmaster led most of the way but mustered enough skills at the end to hack out the win.* MisOr guard Mark Moreño canned a triple with 12 seconds left to threaten, 77-78.* Michael Manigo then scored two free throws off the final foul of Mark Abadia to give Landmaster some cushion, 80-77, at the 11-second mark.* Dennis Concha had the chance to win the game but his triple attempt bounced off the rim and into the waiting hands of Mark Yee, who was quickly fouled by Nathaniel Cruz.* Yee sank a free throw for the final tally.

* * *Landmaster started hot with Bong Marata and Richard Ian Saladaga combining for Landmaster’s biggest lead, 39-26, late in the second quarter.* MisOr kept the pressure with timely hits from Moreño, Frank Nailon and Lowell Briones only to falter in the waning seconds of the game.

AGILAS CLAW FIRST WIN

DAVAO CITY – The Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao wasted a 20-point lead in the final period then held their breath before escaping with an 85-83 win over Arthro Kontra Arthritis Friday night at the Almendras Gym in 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) action.

The Agilas saw their 74-54 advantage slowly evaporate in the midst of a blazing Arthro rally anchored on 6'7” Rino Berame, Michael Luga, Ronald Bucao and Bernie Ursal. Bucao sank a triple with nine seconds left to close in by a point, 83-84.

In the ensuing play, Mark Ababon quickly fouled Jonjon Gonzaga who could only make one free throw, 85-83. Coach Al Solis then called his last timeout. In the final play of the game, the ball went to Bucao who threw up a trey that missed. Doroteo Almacin grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by James Razon at the buzzer. The big crowd erupted in cheers after Almacin missed his first attempt, allowing the Agilas to register their very first win in the conference after six straight losses.

The Agilas appeared headed for the easy win, leading comfortably all the way during the first three periods. Boboy Berami, Bob Cozy Ilanga, Milfred Sampilo and Gonzaga took turns at puncturing the hoop. Ilanga gave the Agilas good momentum by sinking a desperation heave from half-court that beat the halftime buzzer, 46-35.

Arthro beat the Agilas in their initial encounter last October 12 at the New Cebu Coliseum, 104-91. The Jonathan Guardo-owned franchise will next battling the MP Warriors-GenSan of Manny Pacquiao tonight (November 10) at the Oval Plaza in General Santos City.

PLAYOFFS: ARTHRO SHOCKS LANDMASTER IN GAME ONE

MANDAUE CITY – An undermanned Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu pulled off an 81-74 shocker and stole the home court advantage from Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center in Game One of the Visayas Division Wild Card Round of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference.

Landmaster was on top by two with three minutes left to play when Alex Cainglet hit a triple to give Arthro the lead for good. From there, Landmaster simply collapsed. Game Two is tentatively set for November 22 at the New Cebu Coliseum. Landmaster faces the big task of sweeping the next two games in order to advance further in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and supported by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

Arthro played sans big men Rino Berame and Michael Luga who had to travel to Manila with the University of the Visayas Lancers. Coach Al Solis though stayed behind and masterfully steered his crew to the win. Cainglet himself was banished from the game on fouls with a minute to play but Arthro held off Landmaster's repeated attempts to rally. Arthro outscored Landmaster in the final period, 21-14, after a 60-60 standoff after three quarters.

MISOR ENDS SCHEDULE WITH A BANG

DAVAO CITY – Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr clipped the Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao, 87-82, Sunday night to formally end the classification round of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference at the Almendras Gym.

Both teams though have less than 24 hours to make adjustments as they met again in Game One of the Mindanao Division Semifinals tonight (November 19) also at Almendras.

Game Two of the series will be held Wednesday (November 21) at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro. If needed, the deciding Game Three will also be at Xavier on Thursday (November 22). The survivor will face the idle MP Warriors-GenSan of Manny Pacquiao in the best-of-three Mindanao Division Finals of the community-based league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

In the so called calm before the storm, the Agilas and MisOr gave the fans a treat with the thrilling contest. Veteran guard Anton Villoria exploded for 11 points in the fourth quarter, including seven in the final 1:45 to turn the tide in favor of MisOr. The Carcar City native buried a triple to tie the game at 80-80 and then stole the ball in the next sequence for an unmolested lay-up to give MisOr the lead for good, 82-80, and 1:04 to go.

Frank Nailon then padded MisOr's lead with two free throws off Moorice Mejorada at the 37-second mark, 84-80. Five ticks later, Boboy Berami then threatened with a put back of a missed triple by Wynsjohn Te, 82-84. Mejorada quickly fouled Ramil Tagupa, who could only make one free throw, 85-82. In the final 14 seconds of the game, Te missed a running shot to the basket and Nathaniel Cruz grabbed the defensive rebound and a quick outlet pass to Villoria for another easy lay-up to settle the final tally at the buzzer.

It was a sorry loss for the Agilas who firmly controlled the contest until Villoria's final quarter heroics. MisOr ended with a 4-6 win-loss card while the Agilas finished their schedule at 1-9. The Warriors topped the Mindanao Division at 5-5. MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno earned some consolation by sweeping all its games against its fellow Mindanao Division squads. The Warriors used three wins against Visayas Division teams to bolt to the top whereas MisOr failed to defeat a Visayan squad.

Cruz top-scored for MisOr with 19 points while Villoria finished with 18. Nailon followed with 15 and Mark Abadia added 12. Berami paced the Agilas with 16 followed by Fred Sampilo with 12.

All the Agilas could do was counter with basket and two free throws by Boboy Berami as the game was blown apart, 92-78. With the outcome settled, MisOr allowed the Agilas to score the game's final six points in the last minute of play.

A day earlier, MisOr of Gov. Arthro though had one final chance, but Ronald Bucao missed the potential game-tying triple at the buzzer.

Coach Al Solis flew in from Manila where he was with the University of the Visayas Green Lancers for a tournament, but left behind UV stalwarts Rino Berame and Michael Luga. PLAYOFFS: EASY WIN FOR MISOR

CAGAYAN DE ORO – Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr hardly broke a sweat as they took Game One of the best-of-three Mindanao Division Finals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference via forfeiture after the MP Warriors-GenSan failed to show up on time for their game Thursday night at the Xavier University Gym.

MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Bong Abad shoots for its third straight Mindanao Division Championship tomorrow (December 2) when they battle Warriors in Game Two at the Almendras Gym in Davao City.

Should the Warriors of Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido stave off elimination by winning tomorrow and leveling the series, the winner-take-all Game Three will be played Monday (December 3), with the venue to be announced.

To formalize the win, Nat Cruz tapped the jump ball to a waiting Randy Sevilla who missed a 15-foot jumper. Mark Abadia then grabbed the offensive rebound for the “winning” basket.

MisOr swept Goldstar Hardware Duterte Agilas-Davao in the Division Semifinals, 2-0, to arrange the showdown with the Warriors who earned an outright spot in the Division Finals of the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

Meanwhile, Game Three of the Visayas Division Semifinals between Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu of Jonathan Guardo and Coach Al Solis and Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue of Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan will be played this Monday (December 3) at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex. The winner will then play M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City in the best-of-three Visayas Division Finals that will start on December 4 at the New Cebu Coliseum.

* * *The Jewelers looked headed for the easy win, erecting a 16-point lead on a three-point play by Marlon Basco, 76-60, with 4:56 left in the fourth quarter.* Suddenly, disaster struck as Landmaster unloaded an 18-2 bomb to close out regulation time, capped by back-to-back triples by Mike Manigo to tie the count at 78-78 with 13 ticks on the clock.

Lhuillier’s biggest lead of the game, 62-42, with still 6:28 to go in the third.

* * *It was smooth sailing from there as Dacia and Padilla made key final quarter baskets to hold off all of MisOr’s attempts to cut the deficit.* The final buzzer signaled a fitting ending to the successful second season of the community-based league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Water, Accel, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.
