What makes a rivalry?

How about a good deal of animosity, brinkmanship, history and two colors that, ironically, when combined make up a color associated with whimpering, sniveling, fear?

After a year off the books the greatest rivalry in these beautiful islands will once again come to a head this Thursday, 26 July 2007.

Ateneo De Manila and De Lasalle will go to battle, the latest installment in what can only be described as the second-longest war in modern existence (the two Koreas take the dubious cake for longest, but I digress).

Lasalle has had it all over Ateneo ever since both schools made the jump from the storied NCAA to the then-fledgling UAAP over two decades ago. That’s a fine irony considering in the NCAA the two schools were not really rivals. San Beda and Ateneo were the hot and dirty rivals then, with the action spilling out of the court and even well into the bars and beer gardens of the day.

It was inevitable however that the two most expensive and most exclusive schools for boys would eventually cross paths, cross swords (figuratively) and yes, cross defenses on the basketball court. Lasalle has had more opportunities to bring home the annual bragging rights in UAAP basketball, having won more than twice as many titles as Ateneo, including an astounding four straight titles from 1998 – 2001 in the Don Allado-Renren Ritualo era. Lasalle also had a practically unbroken streak of wins against Ateneo in the decade of the 1990’s, during the so-called “dark ages” of Ateneo basketball.

Ateneo however has the edge in terms of head-to-head match ups in the Finals, having beaten Lasalle two (1988 and 2002) out of the three (Lasalle won in 2001) times they’ve met in the UAAP’s biggest stage.

So how do things look after a year?

Offense: Lasalle leads the league in scoring with over 84 points per game. Their transition game is unmatched thanks to the versatility and athleticism of all their players across the board. They also lead the league in team shooting percentage, and they can score on a variety of ways either in the open court or on the set up. Rico Maeirhofer is a double-double machine who rules the inside for Lasalle, together with tough new recruit Brian Ilad. JV Casio and TY Tang are two of the best outside shooters in the UAAP. Cholo Villanueva and James Mangahas fill it up wherever needed.

Ateneo on the other hand is groping for form after so-so wins against opening day assignment Adamson University and most recently against National University. Averaging barely 70 points per game as a team, and lacking any clear leader to show the way and lead their attack, Ateneo is having a hard time producing points consistently from anybody. Chris Tiu is supposed to be the King Eagle this season, but so far it has been the unspectacular Ford Arao who has been delivering the goods, at least up to the UE game.

Advantage: Lasalle

Defense: It may not be the old full court press but it is still the Lasalle full court press, meaning it is still one of the toughest defenses to break. With quick and athletic veterans anchoring one of the most legendary defenses in college basketball it is small wonder Lasalle is also among the league leaders on defense. And just to keep things honest, Maeirhofer is among the best shot blockers in the UAAP.

Ateneo however is no slouch on defense, ranking among the best in team defense in terms of points allowed as well as opponent field goal shooting. Ateneo employs a total team effort on its defensive rotation, operating like clockwork on the extended foul line. Scampering quick guards like Eric Salamat, Eman Monfort and Ken Barracoso allow Coach Norman Black a lot of flexibility in defending the perimeter, a must in stopping any offense.

Advantage: None

Post Players: Maeirhofer had a great off-season showing in all of the big non-UAAP tournaments, and he is on track for his first ever MVP award. He has improved a lot since coming in as a gangly forward-center some four years ago. Now he is a better-rounded player with a whole range of skills, able to operate in the post and away from it. He is one of the best rebounders and shot blockers in the UAAP and is a superb athlete.

After him however the Lasalle frontline thins considerably. As experienced as Ilad is he is still a UAAP rookie who will make his share of mistakes in his first ever Ateneo-Lasalle game. PJ Walsham may be a veteran but he is basically a rotation player only. Kish Co is still a little undersized as a UAAP 5 and 4.

Arao and Raba Al Hussaini are two of the biggest players in the UAAP, and two of the best-coached classic back-to-the basket post players in the league. But they are not the big man All Stars of Ateneo teams past. Still, they work efficiently and their overall size and strength does not allow any team to take them lightly.

Helping them out in the frontline are UAAP returnee Jobe Nkemakolam and Visayan recruit Nonoy Baclao. Nkemakolam and Baclao are polar opposites In terms of build and playing style but are definitely more talented than Arao and Al Hussaini, and they have proven fearless regardless of the opposition with their relentless rebounding and physical defense.

Advantage: Ateneo

Perimeter Players: This is where things swing drastically over to the green side. TY Tang, JV Casio, Cholo Villanueva, James Mangahas, PJ Barua and OJ Cua are a bunch of battle-tested and highly skilled players who can hurt opponents in a variety of ways. Tang has developed into one of the top three guards in the UAAP, and has gotten stronger and wiser; ditto Casio, whose overall game has improved considerably since coming in as a three-point specialist. Villanueva is at times the best player on a talented team with his guile and court smarts. Mangahas is having a career year.

Ateneo on the other hand is playing small ball in the backcourt over 80% of the time. While Monfort and Jai Reyes are deadeye shooters, it is painfully obvious that they are not real point guards, and neither is Salamat. Tiu and Barracoso carry the cudgels for Ateneo and they have been woefully inconsistent thus far. Rookies Kirk Long and Bacon Austria have size and some skill but may not see much time against the battle-tested Lasalle backcourt.

Advantage: Lasalle

Outlook: Ateneo has not scared any one thus far in UAAP Season 70. Lasalle on the other hand, in spite of the setback against UE, is still one of the most feared and aggressive teams in the league. While they match up well on defense, Lasalle simply has much more weaponry than Ateneo on offense.

Ateneo is simply overmatched in the backcourt in terms of size and speed, a distinct liability against the fast and aggressive Lasalle press. Ateneo had a tough time breaking the UE and NU presses, what more Lasalle’s. And they are not going to stop Lasalle’s own backcourt men either.

Perhaps Ateneo’s best chance is to slow the game down and pound the ball into the post where they have an advantage in terms of size and depth. But to get that done the guards have to find a way to get around the Lasalle defense first, which once again puts the onus on the Blue Eagle guards.

We see a 14-17 point win by Lasalle with Ateneo making a game of it only in a few stretches.

At the start of the season, I wondered why Black had so many guards in his line-up. The bigs guys from last season do not intimidate anyone and I was expecting one or a couple of new big guys should be included in the line-up. Baclao is a good addition but very seldom do we find a UAAP neophyte make an impact from the get go and Baldos is undersize at his spot.

Then came the UE game. So that's the reason there were an array of guards. Black wants a controlled and disciplined offense.

Kahit si Ilad ay bumait. Maybe the suspension humbled the team and in a way changed its character. For so long it is that "angas", that "attitude" that made this team dominate the opposition.

Wala eh, sobrang bait nitong Archers ngayon.

Pero kung nainsulto ang pagkatao nila matapos tambakan ng UE, di ako magtataka kung may napukaw sa loob ng mga iyan.

I've noticed lang.... Majority of the games since 1993, if it's a close one come the dying seconds, Ateneo gets the win. Pero kung tambakan, it's all a different result. You rarely see an Ateneo win via rout.

I admire the fighting spirit of the men in blue in today's game. They made the La Salle press almost totally useless. Since the La Salle press works on a 1-2-1-1 format, Ateneo countered most of it by a 1-2-2 or 1-2-1-1 offiense. They never left the ball carrier which was the key to break the press. Plus the half-court inbound set-up was marvelous! The two-two approach was just picture perfect! The two blue shirts would cross to the halfcourt, while the other two would move to the back court, usually the big man receiving the ball from the inbounder. That is a move that provides a "pick" for a free receiver. Coach Norman definitely did his homework well. The La Salle trap is awesome. But there are ways to break such a press. Reminds me of an old Black Trick back in the 1980's. Jai Reyes was in the zone as well. Cholo, TY, JV, or anyone starting the La Salle trap couldn't even catch up with him. Parang si LA Tenorio doing a "Speedy Gonzalez" Or "Road Runner" move when he was with the team. And as always, there are the moments when Ford or Chris doing shots that would make me say, "...NO-NO-NO-NO...YESSSSSS!!!!" And as expected, Ateneo should dominate the boards. Kudos to Rabs(around 11 or 12 rebounds from my count), Jobe (7 boards), and Baclao (7 or 8 boards). And yes, I now believe that "White men can jump...." Kirk did a fantastic job on plucking the ball in the middle of towering men (7 boards). As I've shouted during the game, "Rico (Maierhofer), yang si Kirk --- PUTI. Ikaw, maputi lang!" Didn't get to count his rebounds, but everytime the next possession was crucial, I'd always see Kirk with the hussle and making sure that Ateneo got the ball (Kahit airball yung first two shots mo kid, you made me admire the skill from a White Boy...The White Chocolate of the men in blue!).

As for La Salle, JV was in the zone during the fourth and the overtime periods. Kahit nasa kalaban ka, I have respect for your talent...malinis, and totally would give me goosebumps during a close game. Cholo was productive. But it's expected from the 7-year veteran. Ty's dagger drive in the third, totally awesome. Made me curse in a way that would signal to the men in blue: "How and why the hell could you let a small guy penetrate that way?!" But for the rest of the game, looks like TY was off. It was expected that the guards of La Salle would produce. They did. But Ateneo's guards/SF delivered more. La Salle big men... Only Rico was the consistent producer. Most likely another double-double. But after him, La Salle became a doughnut. PJ has the beef to bang with Ateneo's big men, but it wasn't enough. Ferdinand had a lot of quality minutes, but he still has much to learn.

Generally, the game was clean, except for that Ford-Rico tussle. At balak pa sumama ni PJ. Cool heads would always prevail. That's a lesson. Kudos to both teams.

For us Ateneans...FEU is next. The next Ateneo-La Salle battle will have to wait. And we still have a score to settle with the defending champs. For now, "bragging rights" is ours for the moment. But I'm in no mood to brag at all. Maybe the better word to describe it is: THANKFUL.

Til the next Ateneo-La Salle game in the next round. This one became an instant classic for us, Ateneans. OBF!

The bitter Ateneo-La Salle feud has escalated to a point where some diehards from both schools are blinded by school loyalty and can no longer discern what is right and what is wrong.

It is healthy to encourage rivalry because competition brings out the best in you. But if you take it to a level where your behavior becomes irreverent and uncalled for, you put yourself and your school to shame.

Nothing wrong with cheering yourself hoarse during a basketball game. But when you begin to curse, wag the middle finger and act like a boor, you set a horrible example for others. There is no place for hooliganism in a decent society.

Worse, your line of thinking becomes clouded by bias. You resist any form of criticism and suspect those who don’t see things your way as harboring ulterior motives. You dissociate yourself from others whose opinions may differ from yours and as a result, you lose self-respect.

I’m reminded of the series of photos accessible in the Internet showing the metamorphosis of a lady in the basketball gallery from a prayerful pose with a rosary to a defiant stand waving her middle finger.

If there is to be animosity, leave it on the court. When the game is over, walk away. If your school wins, celebrate the moment and thank the loser for a gallant effort. If your school loses, congratulate the winner and resolve to bounce back next time. Don’t keep enmity in your heart because life is too short to be ravaged by hatred.

It’s in the spirit of fun that you hear a La Salle fan say Ateneo wins the UAAP men’s basketball championship “once in a blue moon” or that you hear an Ateneo fan say green is the color of envy. But if you take the ribbing to heart, you not only give yourself unnecessary stress but also show lack of good breeding.

In the aftermath of Ateneo’s victory over La Salle in Game 2 of the recent UAAP finals, there continues to be a lot of mudslinging.

Ateneo fans accuse La Salle of poor sportsmanship. An Eagle alumnus swears he saw Chris Tiu extend his hand only to be ignored by Rico Maierhofer and J. V. Casio when they were called to center court for recognition as Mythical Five stars before Game 2. The same alumnus claims there was no handshaking among players after the contest. Then there was the brouhaha about the Archers not returning to the scene of battle to receive the runner-up trophy.

On the other hand, La Salle fans insist the Archers were short-changed by the referees who threw out Maierhofer on a questionable technical foul at the height of the Archers third period rally and disqualified Casio in the fourth quarter with the outcome still in the balance. They point to the glaring disparity in fouls called – La Salle 29 and Ateneo 13. The Eagles were 18-of-28 from the line and the Archers, 3-of-8. Wasn’t the UAAP commissioner a former Ateneo varsity player, the La Salle fans ask.

Some La Salle supporters candidly admit Ateneo was the superior team this season but surely, the Eagles would’ve preferred to win under less controversial circumstances – perhaps, a consoling thought.

A few days ago, Ateneo president Fr. Bienvenido Nebres wrote a letter to La Salle president Bro. Armin Luistro apologizing for an incident at the Loyola bonfire celebrating the Eagles’ UAAP triumph.

Fr. Nebres said:
“I would like to extend my deepest apology to you and to the La Sallian community for what some alumnus or student did at the Ateneo bonfire, namely, write the names of the La Salle players on the wood. Unfortunately, none of us saw it ahead of time because the wood pile was covered by a tarp against the rain until the time came to light it.

“Despite our rivalries in sports, we are both committed to Christian values and what was done is certainly a violation of values we share. Once again, my deepest apologies to you and to the La Sallian community. We are trying to find out who is responsible for the act.”

A source says Ateneo alumnus Jesse Paredes has admitted responsibility. Paredes has reportedly written a letter of apology to Fr. Nebres, saying he never meant to offend anyone.

From pictures in the Internet, there are visible inscriptions on the wooden (or bamboo?) poles – Pumaren, Barua, Rico Maierhofer, Malabes, Mangahas, Three Blind Mice, among others. An Ateneo witness says rival schools in the UAAP were not spared in the burning but only the Archers players were named.

A La Salle fan, writing in the Taft Internet forum, says with obvious wit, “just wondering if Norman Black had something to do with converting the Ateneo to Black Magic.” The pun is in reference to the voodoo of burning the sticks with the players’ names – no offense meant to the Ateneo coach.

“As you can see, they wrote the names of the La Salle players on the sticks and burned them,” says another La Salle fan. “It looked more like a Ku Klux Klan bonfire. If La Salle did it, all the newspapers would’ve carried the pictures and countless commentaries written about La Sallian behavior. Also, La Sallian websites were hacked. Archerpride.com and greenarcher.net were vandalized the night Ateneo won the championship.”

Why has the rivalry come down to this? I know of an elementary student who breaks down in tears whenever his school loses to the other and can’t wait for the day to exact revenge. Bad blood is evident at such an early age.

There must be something the UAAP can do to foster the spirit of sportsmanship instead of fan the fires of animosity between La Salle and Ateneo. That will be the subject of tomorrow’s column.

The De La Salle University yesterday accepted Ateneo’s apology on the bonfire incident where the Eagles’ supporters torched wood planks bearing the names of the La Salle Green Archers during the team’s victory party for winning the UAAP cage crown recently.

“In behalf of the entire Lasallian community, I thank Ateneo president Fr. (Bienvenido) Nebres for his heartfelt apology and accept it wholeheartedly,” said DLSU president and Chancellor Br. Armin Luistro, FSC.

A few days ago, Fr. Nebres, S.J. wrote a letter to the La Salle president apologizing for the incident at the Loyola campus bonfire celebrating the Eagles’ UAAP title romp.

Photos of the bonfire were circulated over the Internet and drew adverse reactions from various sectors.

“While the incident remains unfortunate and could possibly have been avoided, it should not be seen as reflective of the kind of values and principles that we, both La Salle and Ateneo, strongly uphold,” Br. Armin said. “The challenge to rein in excessive partisanship is an on-going process at DLSU and among UAAP schools.”

He has assured Fr. Nebres that the entire Lasallian community appreciates Ateneo’s effort in taking the initiative to investigate the matter further.

“Even if there is stiff competition in the UAAP games, we have always believed that our active participation in the league helps build character, foster camaraderie among the different teams, even as each of our schools rally the school spirit of our students and alumni,” he said. “We also believe that through the games, we are providing good role models, not just for the students of the different UAAP schools, but also for the youth at large,” Br. Armin added.

Meanwhile, Br. Armin clarified that the Archers did not go out of their dugout after the game to receive their trophy simply because no one called them. At the time, University officials and other supporters already filled the dugout to express appreciation for the team.
