Taking in Slaughter

TWO teams from the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and four squads from the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) are set to test each other when the 2007 Talk ’N Text MVBA invitational tournament unfolds on June 24-28 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Existing MVBA squads, led by multi-titled M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala, Arthro Kontra Arthritis, Holcim Pryce Pharma and Iligan Archangels, will test their skills against Burger Kings, Dazz Detergent of the PBL.

And with his lack in ceiling and a legitimate center, Jewelers coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba is inviting 6-foot-11 Fil-Am sensation Greg Slaughter to join his team.

But University of the Visayas Green Lancer coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug had a different opinion.

According to Cabahug, Slaughter is not yet ready for a commercial tournament, since he is still 19 years old and needs to polish his skills a bit for the tough game in the commercial level.

“Games in the commercial tournaments are different from the collegiate ball game. Yes, we know that he has a huge potential, but he is not yet ready with the physical games in the commercial,” explained Cabahug.

Slaughter, who made headlines recently, has not only caught the attention of the Cebu basketball leagues but in the nation’s capital as well.

“Maybe he doesn’t know this but he’s already a big name in Manila,” said BAP-SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio during the press conference.

After losing to Arthro during the MVBA Visayas Division championship, Alcoseba is now retooling his lineup and will possibly hire good and legitimate centers. (RCM)

The Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) will take off its initial project in this portion of the archipelago with the staging of the Talk ‘N Txt BAP-SBP Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Invitational Tournament on June 24-28 at the Cebu Coliseum.

This was formally announced by event organizers led by BAP-SBP executive director Patrick “Pato” C. Gregorio and Cebu City Councilor Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba in a press conference yesterday at Yayoy’s Grill and Resto Bar.

They were joined by long-time sports patron and BAP-7 director Lorenzo “Chao” Sy, University of the Visayas head coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug, UV’s 6-foot-11 Fil-Am Gregory Fuentes-Slaughter and West Negros College (WNC) sports coordinator Rico Perez.

“Hopefully this tournament will be an annual thing for us. They (BAP-SBP) are doing this so the program that they will implement in the province will push through,” said Alcoseba, the decorated M. Lhuillier bench tactician who is also the founder of MVBA.

For his part, Chao Sy has thrown in his commitment to help the league in any way he can for as long as it is for the betterment of Philipine basketball in general and for the development of Cebu hoopdom in particular.

“I’m always willing to extend my help as long as it is for the good of Philippine basketball. The only thing I can say is that instead of destroying each other, let’s help one another and work hand in hand for the good of the sport. Let’s foster unity instead of creating divisiveness,” appealed Chao Sy.

A total of six teams - two each from Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao - will take part in the five-day cagefest.

These are Burger King and Dazz Dishwashing Paste from the Manila-based Philippine Basketball League (PBL), M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala and newly-crowned 2007 MVBA First Conference Visayas champion Arthro Kontra Arthritis of Visayas, and Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr and Iligan Archangels representing Mindanao.

Alcoseba said the competing teams will be divided into two brackets with the top two teams advancing into the crossover semifinals. The winners will then clash for the championship in a winner-take-all affair, while the losers battle for third place honors.

MANILA, Philippines—Two PBL teams will see action in the First Talk ‘N Text-Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Invitational basketball tournament starting tomorrow at the New Cebu City Coliseum.

Burger King and Dazz ‘Sang Patak, both led by standouts from the Visayas and Mindanao, will mix it up with four other teams in the first major provincial event sanctioned by the Samahang Basket bol ng Pilipinas.

Both squads tapped reinforcements from other teams in the PBL, which recently crowned Harbour Centre as its third straight champion.

MVBA first conference champion Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, Iligan Archangels, host M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City and collegiate powerhouse University of Visayas complete the field in the five-day tournament.

Dazz will take on M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala in the opening game at 3:30 p.m., right after the 3 p.m. kickoff ceremony. Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr and Burger King will battle at 5:30 p.m.

The Whoppers now boast of a formidable frontline as JR Quiñahan, the burly Cebuano slotman, teams up with Toyota Balintawak’s 6-foot-7 Fil-Am Joe Devance, whose mother, Mae, traces her roots to Negros Occidental.

The Kitchen Specialists, whose players are mostly from the South, will field three Harbour players led by Zamboanga’s Chico Lanete, a two-time Finals MVP.

Dazz is mentored by Visayan coach Jun Noel while Lawrence Chongson will call the shots for the Whoppers, who reached the quarterfinals of the last PBL conference.

The six teams will be divided into two groups and play a single round. The top two teams in each group will advance to the June 27 crossover semifinals, with the winners clashing for the championship the following day.
