View Full Version : BREAKOUT WARRIOR FOR SEASON 70

JAMES MARTINEZ, the love-hate kid of the UAAP, is to me the man most likely to have a breakout season for the Red Warriors.

Martinez is arguably the best long-range shooter in the league and among the best in the whole country. Now that Coach Dindo Pumaren has gotten him to embrace the role of pointguard more and also taught him to defend better he's coming closer and closer to being a complete package as a solid 1/2 in the UAAP. I can see him winning a maybe two or three games for UE on the strength of his shooting alone.

"Watch out for former Staglet PAUL LEE, who seems to have blossomed into the second coming of Bon Custodio. This 5-foot-11 combo-guard can play both backcourt positions with aplomb and is fearless attacking the basket. If his leap and passing improve he will make UE fans forget even Ronald Tubid and James Yap." from Sam Miguel, just to add to the comments of SaPula.

Last year is the best chance for UE to win the title with a suspended DLSU team and a "weakened" FEU team with the departure of Santos and co.

Now, UE will go through the needle again with the return of La Salle and a rejuvenated FEU team. Especially without the high scoring Bonbon Custodio.

Isn't Kelvin Gregorio injured? Is he out for the season?

I was also leaning toward Gregorio until somebody said he's injured. But UE is not lacking in candidates. Jorel Canizares is a breakout waiting to happen. Save for a shaky jumper, he has what it takes to be a lead man. Unfortunately, he was never among the prime or secondary options in the UE scheme of things. Bandaying is another player who will be a contributor for UE. He's got great defense and is a capable scorer. And he doesn;t need to have the ball in his hands to be able to orchestrate unlike, let's say, Rob Labagala who's lost without the ball. Thielle is another prospect. He's a poor man's JC Intal, IMHO. Every year, the softie Espiritu is touted to be among the top forwards. Every year, true to being a Warrios, he never fails to disappoint. James Martinez, for me, had his breakout in the offseason. Will he do a UE and fizzle in the UAAP?

Can anyone confirm that Kelvin Gregorio was NOT placed on the UE lineup for Season 70?

And was it because he really is injured?

Agree, Hans will always be counted on for his hustle ditto with Fampulme who even scored twice from the outside. Offensive contributions from these 2 are just bonuses.

James' 3 point shooting is one of the deadliest in the league. I noticed too that he has somewhat mellowed down and gone are the "taunts" (o ayan Paolo ha, may quotation marks na). ;D This will be good for him since there will be no more distractions and he will win for his school not only the game but the admiration of the other schools as well.

8) ;DBro, don't worry one of these days or after the NCAA and UAAP season pakakausap ko siya sa inyo! While he is DONNING THE WARRIOR UNIFORM he will never forget that it was SAN BEDA who gave him the opportunity to play GOOD basketball!
Medyo na-misinterpret lang ang actions niya nuon because he always plays his heart out every game that he is in! Kaya nga he never chose a school that plays against his ALMA MATER, meaning NCAA, kasi he never intends to compete with intensity against SAN BEDA. Unlike two former cubs after HIM, don't have to mention their names baka sumikat pa! hehehe They went to schools that compete against BEDA because of their ONLY desire to play college ball! Game long consistency, maybe not. Pero at end game - he is. Iba ang tapang ng batang yan.

Just observe, better if one can log it down, the 3-ptrs he would convert in the 4th qtr against the first 3 periods and you will know what I mean.

Medyo OT na, pero banggitin na rin natin, tutal we are civil here in this forum: TG Guillermo and Rodel Ranises, both playing for Mapua. Their case is not without precedent naman, eh.

The earliest Red Cub I can think of who moved on* is 6-3 Tony De Leon, who played for Letran beginning 1978. He shot 12 points, contributing immensely inthe Knight's defeat of the Lions who were attempting an unprecedented sweep then. He won a championship a year later as well.

Then, of course, probably the more successful one in recent years is another Cub turned Knight Chris Calaguio, who experienced winning a championship ahead of his peers at San Beda.* He reportedly was cut from the lineup by then Coach Orly Castelo after having been found out to have tried out for other NCAA teams. So with heavy heart, he transferred to Letran.

As far as TG and Rodel are concerned, we wish them well. I believe they are still warmly welcomed by the Bedan crowd, specially TG last year.

And that applies, I suppose, for ALL Red Cubs who sought their fortune elsewhere.

Last season nang di ko nakita ang pangalan ni Paul Lee sa line-up, napakunot ang noo ko.

In hindsight, with Custodio still in the lineup last season, baka nga halos walang makuhang playing time si Lee. For the kid, mas nakabuti nga yung pag-upo niya last year. Maganda ang pagkahinog.

Ngayon, makikita natin na malaki ang playing time niya at may may full 5-year eligibility siya sa pagpasok niya this season.

We can just imagine how dominant this kid will be by his 3rd season.

Tabi!

Banggitin ko lang. Paul Lee, Raffy Reyes ( both with UE), Eric Salamat (now Ateneo), together with Buenafe and the Bringas brothers were all part of the Staglets champion team of NCAA season 81. Ganon kalakas yung juniors team na yun!

Salamat was the star of that team and infact was selected NCAA Jrs. MVP. But with the way Lee is playing, he may outshine all of his friends at San Sebastian before his varsity career is over. Di rin ako magugulat if he will have the most outstanding varsity career among junior ballers of Class '06, w/c also included Hermida, Atkins, De Asis, Woody Co. Some names escape me now, but that was one talented bunch of junior players we had that year.

Will easily make up the training pool for the Juniors/ Youth National Team. Teka...OT na yata yan.... ;D

Non blue chip Junior players who have intense desire to play varsity ball should take Lee as an example.

He was not highly regarded coming out of San Sebastian Staglets. Ang meron lang siya that time ay bilis at tapang. Skills wise, he wasn't exceptional. Malamang nga, last season, may konting inggit yan sa loob seeing his fellow class'06 in action at both the UAAP and NCAA. Yung tulad nila Salamat, fellow Warrior Reyes, the Maroon's out-of-hs rookies, former Red Cubs Hermida and Guillermo. Lahat yan nakatapat niya, and his high school team the Staglets dominated most of them.

Pero di niya sinayang yung isang taon. Nagpahinog ng tama. His body became mature, lumakas ang upper body.

Take it as an opportunity to improve yourself, sa katawan at sa skills.

8)* I saw the game against La Salle, Pare, this batchmate of mine had really improved a lot, he had developed
penetration moves which make him more potent than before.
Ronnie Magsanoc was right when he pointed out that James was one dimensional during his Red Cub days, but now, he has improved his skills.* Coach Dindo should be given credit for this guy's marked improvement.

Even if UE loses six guys they have at least three frontline players in the 6-foot-5 range ready to come in next season after completing their residency. At least that's what the folks over at the PE building said. I saw at least two semi-familiar looking kids (parang taga-NAASCU sila dati...) standing at least 6-foot-4 when I hung out at the PE office waiting for my cousin to finish work, so I guess that settles that.

This year is UE's best chance to win the championship. Sa matitira, only Llagas and Acuna ang magaling at experienced na. Espiritu has one more year. The new guys will have to wait 2-3 years to be where Borboran and company are now at.

Erwin Duran and Ken Acibar are pretty good players coming out of the Juniors Division, but they are not in the mold of their JUniors classmates from FEU like Soc Rivera and Joans Paguia as frontliners. I believe one of the players I saw at the PE office that afternoon was JEFF LAPITAN, which would of course be ridiculous since he is already lined up with the EAC Generals, so perhaps my eyesight is simply failing due to old age.

James Martinez is indeed having one heck of a first round. I only hope he has enough gas in the tank for the more critical second round when teams start making that last strong push for the Final 4. This is when the Warriors will be most tested.

Over the past couple of seasons they have found ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory when the stakes were highest. 2002 and 2005 were just the most recent second round / Final 4 meltdowns for the Warriors. If they are to make it all the way to the Big Dance then the much-awaited breakout Warriors need to carry on their breakouts all the way to the Finals.

^ Ser sama mo na rin yung 2006 meltdown nile kung saan twice-to-beat ulit sila only to be booted out of the finals. Ang masakit non kanila pa yung last shot sa first game.

The past Warriors haven't show strength of character in the past and maybe, just maybe, Martinez' 'angas' will give them character to get over the hump, get to the finals and lose to UST in a 2 games. Sana.

2008, they'll lose to UST again in game 3.

indeed sir! i hope there will be no more blunders for them. on a lighter note, i believe it is seethed deep in their hearts that they should never ever be a "laughingstock" in the uaap--again! darn if they did! i hope also like sir wangbu said, they are not peaking too early. i hope there is more in store for them come second round. until that day, good showing for the warriors esp. now after cupping their 6th straight win.* ;)

Llgas nagpapakitang-gilas

"I knew he has potential when I saw him play in high school," pahayag ni Pumaren kay Llagas, ang UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week. "This year, he has really improved a lot after working on him in the off-season."

Let's every one calm down. The site proprietors have assured me things are now on the level.

That being said I was privileged enough to be at one of the practise sessions of the Warriors at the Tanduay Gym in Quiapo. Wang-bu was there pointing things out, helping keep players in position, not blowing a whistle though.

The Warriors still look very sharp, no mistakes in any of the drills, very fast on all the suicides, great shooting, good passing, set hard picks, and incredibly enough, every one seemed loose but serious, getting the workout done properly without getting on each other's nerves. Something tells me whoever has the misfortune of facing the Warriors in the Finals will be on the wrong side of a bad beating. These guys do not look rusty or complacent at all.

I did notice they seemed to rave a lot about the buffet of the hotel where they were staying. Apparently it includes lechon which they seem to enjoy immensely...

Go UE!!!
