JV Casio scored a game-high 26 points as La Salle pounded out an 86-78 victory over National University, 86-78, yesterday to seal a title clash with San Beda College for the Filoil-Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup crown at The Arena in San Juan.

Held to only three points after the first 10 minutes of the contest, Casio exploded for 10 in the second period as the Archers outscored the Bulldogs, 23-14, to turn a 20-26 deficit into a 43-40 advantage at the half.

The spitfirish La Salle guard slowed down a bit in the third but caught fire again in the fourth as he accounted for 10 of La Salle’s last 22 points to power the Archers to the victory.

But while La Salle cruised to the win, San Beda had to go through overtime before disposing of University of the East, 96-92.

The Archers, gearing up for their return to the UAAP, and the Red Lions, the reigning NCAA champions, dispute the title tomorrow, also at the San Juan gym.

The Red Lions actually blew a four-point lead in the last 15 seconds in regulation as playmaker Pong Escoba made a passing error and a dribbling violation, enabling the Warrios to force the extension.

But Escobal atoned for those endgame miscues as he knocked in a three-pointer and canned in two pressure-packed charities to ensure the win for San Beda. He wound up with 19 points.

Each of the DLSU bigs (Walsham/Ilad/Batricevic) pitted against Sam have varying degrees of skill, athleticism and strength to throw at him. As to the measure of success they will have is anyone's guess. But big man scoring is not really a focal point of the DLSU system, is it?

An Aljamal/Maerhoffer pairing of mobile power forwards who can shoot from afar and do a variety of post up moves would probably be a more interesting matchup. I would probably see Batricevic here as well if only for his ability to shoot. But I could see him used to draw Sam away from the paint again.

I would like to see how Hermida would fare against the likes of Casio and T@ang. Lanete may be a better match against them because of his speed.
I would also like to see Atkins vs Hermida in a matchup of point guards with great reputations coming out of high school.

I would say that La Salle has the edge and they have our numbers. It's so hard to contain Rico, JV, Ilad, Mangahas, Villanueva and Tang. Their spacing is good and will definitely stretch our defense.

Since we have the advantage inside, they will try to kill us with their perimeter shooting. Casio, Tang, Mangahas, Malabes and now even Rico can burn the hoops from the rainbow area.

Pag nag click ang outside shooting ng La Salle, patay na kami.

You're right. Outside shooting will be key. And you're the only one who has mentioned "Snake" Mangahas. James' confidence has improved tremendously in the summer leagues and has become a genuine threat, inside and out.

archers will either live or die with their outside shooting. with ekwe manning the middle for the lions, points in the paint for the archers will be scarce as well as offensive rebounds. however, the lions should take care of the ball specially against the press of la salle. otherwise the archers will have easy points off turnovers. this should be a very exciting game. good luck to both schools.

tingin ko San Beda ang mananalo dito. Mas magaling ang import nila kumpara sa import ng La Salle.

i still think it's la salle's ability to force turnovers that will be key in the finals. if la salle will attack pong escobal's suspect gut and force him to cough up the ball in pressure situations, then it'll be a wrap for la salle. i'm almost certain they look forward to defending escobal and practically daring him to take matters into his own hands.

to win, san beda better be prepared for la salle's defensive disruptions by taking extra care of its possessions. keep away from the sidelines, because the green archer defensive philosophy views the sideline as an extra defender. get rico, brian, and kish co into foul trouble. don't give up on defensive plays, because la salle never gives up on offense.

Hindi yata maglalaro yung import nila dahil injured. Pero maglalaro yata yung iba pang imports.

Yung import naman namin e sa depensa lang pwedeng asahan. Teams have adjusted to the game of Sam. They know his weak spots which they exploit to the hilt.

My formula for winnning against La Salle is too keep the game close until the final minutes. With the game on the line and Pong and Aljamal providing the leadership, we might just be able to get the win.

Huwag lang kaming ibaon kaagad sa outside shooting ng La Salle and we have a good chance.

The Red Lions have just to take care of every ball possessions against La Salle press. One thing id like to see is how Coach Frankie will orchestrate his up-tempo offense against press. Baka mas mapadali pa ang opensa ng Lions as in the past games its evident that the lions will run as much as possible and throw in long passes to Menor and Lanete.

La Salle, SBC clash for Fil-Oil crown
mb.com.ph

Games Today (The Arena, San Juan)
1 p.m. — NU vs. UE (For 3rd)
3 p.m. — SBC vs DLSU (Championship)

TWO POWERHOUSE teams from different leagues, UAAP’s De La Salle University and NCAA’s San Beda College, square off today for the Filoil-Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup title at The Arena in San Juan.

The last time the La Salle Green Archers and San Beda Red Lions faced each other in a final match was in 1978 at the height of the NCAA wars.

Chants of "Animo La Salle" and "We’re back" reverberated from the thousands of Green Archers fans who trooped to The Arena last Monday during La Salle’s semifinal tiff with National University. Indeed, gauging from its last few games, the Taft-based team is slowly getting its groove back from a year of inactivity.

But the Red Lions remain undaunted. They are the NCAA defending champions and, with it, is a sense of pride that they must face head-on the adversity of meeting a title-hungry team like La Salle.

San Beda seems to have an advantage in this faceoff. How far the team goes may very well be in the hands of its star point guard Pong Escobal, who burned the University of the East Red Warriors with his steady freethrow shooting two days ago.

Escobal has played consistently offensively and defensively in the post-season while his counterpart, La Salle’s Tyrone Tang, has only shown half of what he is capable of.

But, of course, DLSU coach Franz Pumaren’s prize possession could only be playing a mind game with the opponents. He may just be physically and mentally pacing himself and then peak at the right moment.

In the center department, 6-foot-8 behemoth and rebound king Sam Ekwe gives San Beda a slight edge over La Salle.

Huwag lang kaming ibaon kaagad sa outside shooting ng La Salle and we have a good chance.

...which should make your defensive job easier. they know as hell it'll be next to impossible to score inside with big sam ekwe patrolling the middle. they will shoot outside because many times they'll find no other option in halfcourt sets. the antidote is to play man-to-man with direct instructions to switch in anticipation of the screens and picks. a man defense will also help sam become more effective because his teammates have definite blockout assignments after a la salle shot attempt. but coaches know that already.

that's why la salle will rely more on its ability to disrupt and score points off san beda turnovers. yan ang bantayan nyo. i can almost sense that the la salle guards are looking forward to duel with pong.

tip lang: manipis ang front line ng la salle. they also have a propensity for fouling, so try to convert all your free throws in penalty situation. keep a close eye on mangahas. the kid's for real.

De La Salle University wins the Filoil-Flying V Pre-Season Invitationals by defeating San Beda 89-81.

Everybody here was on the dot, it was the guards who dictated the offense of La Salle as giant Sam Ekwe made it very difficult for the Archers to score inside. I think Cholo Villanueva scored 23 points while TY Tang had 22. JV Casio also contributed heavily for La Salle.

It was like a college team vs. a PBA team, with the college team coming out on top. San Beda exhausted its players, too many minutes for the starters.

In the end, the better conditioned team prevailed.

Congratulations La Salle!

I hope the Red Lions learned a lot from the game. Yup, the pre-game analysis was bang on.

Goodluck!

Congrats to La Salle for winning the Fil Oil Championship!

The game was close until third quarter. In fourth quarter, La Salle was able to anticipate the ball movement of the Red Lions and forced several turnovers which buried SBC behind by 6-8 points. Medyo pagod na rin yong key markers ng red lions and escobal and aljamal were all in foul trouble. La Salle was able to take a run early in the fourth from a pass from Tang to Casio for three. Then and again, another bedan killed us with key 3-point markers in the fourth this offseason. >:(.

Good game.

Congratulations to La Salle!

As I have said, it was the outside shooting of La Salle in the middle of the 4th quarter which gave them a 9 point lead courtesy of successive 3 pointers from Casio, Mangahas and Tang.

Prior to that, La Salle's inside and outside scoring were nowhere to be found. *It was only Cholo and Tang who carried the scoring load for La Salle but their points mostly came from creative individual plays.

San Beda's defense worked extremely well against their shooters. San Beda also handled La Salle's trapping defense and full court press so well.

However, Coach Frankie used only a 7 - 8 man rotation with the starters hardly taking a rest. *This took its toll in the last quarter when they were too tired to cover the perimeter shooters of La Salle. And La Salles' shooters took advantage of the situation. *Casio (who was silent prior to that), Mangahas and Tang converted those 3 pointers which gave them a comfortable lead going into the last 5 minutes of the game.

It was a great game. *Coach Frankie used a PBA style of coaching. Ok sana kaya lang masyadong napagod ang mga starters, specially that the Red Lions employed a running game from start to finish. *

1979 is correct, La Salle's conditioning gave them the advantage because their players had fresher legs *in the end game. Sila Pong, Borgie, Ogie at Sam lawit na yung dila sa katatakbo buong laro.

If Coach Frankie really intends to use a running game, dapat 10-man rotation at least yung gamitin niya.

It was a good baptism of fire for Coach Frankie. I agree, his coaching style is patterned more on the PBA, that relies too much on good games from star players and individual plays. Actually LaSalle's starters also played extended minutes but coach Franz is so used to amateur rules wherein you can make substitutions on any deadball situation. He utilized this to the hilt, giving multiple short 1-2 minutes breathers for his starters T@ng and Villanueva. Di pa nga nag-iinit si Atkins sa loob, pinapaupo na, hehehe. In fact maski 1 minute na lang natitira sa isang quarter, binabalik pa rin sina T@ng. Another testament to thestate of physical conditioning that LaSalle have is that they have to play 3 games in 4 days.

Poor freethrow shooting and foul trouble compounded the woes of SBC.

Congrats to LaSalle! This is a strong message to your opponents this 70th season of UAAP. They're STILL the team to beat.

Frankie Lim should take advantage of the training of previous San Beda athletes. Even back when DLSU and ADMU were in the NCAA, San Beda athletes were always given healthy respect due to their excellent conditioning. Back then, even the basketball and volleyball teams of San Beda, took their conditioning regime from the football team under the legendary Juan Cutillas who also trained the champion RP basketball teams. DLSU's conditioning is a year round program based on an INDIVIDUALIZED conditioning regimen designed by Dan Rose. San Beda should continue their tradition of having their basketball team do their condition training with their football team. Trust me, your players will develop longer stamina and better feet balance and control.

Anyway, I loved the game last night because regardless of the outcome, both teams gave their all. This is one of those games where you just hate the fact that one team has to lose. DLSU, and I can speak for the community on this, has a very high respect for San Beda. Not only because Renren Ritualo and Jvee Casio were former Bedans who played for DLSU but because La Salle athletes and San Beda athletes have always had some form of bond among each other. Sure our supporters and your supporters bash each other during the games and in fora like this, but deep down inside, you can really feel the respect that we mutually have.

Congrats San Beda! I look forward to your campaign for a back-to-back championship. You have a great team!

Oh, by the way, can you guess what Jvee Casio was doing while San Beda was singing their alma mater song? Look at this:

You can take the Bedan out of San Beda, but you can't take out San Beda from the Bedan, este now a La Sallian too.

Filoil-Flying V will be the sponsor of the Collegiate Champions League.

Pero baka La Salle will NOT play in the tournament.

Coach Franz said in a sports forum this morning na his boys are dead tired from their UAAP campaign and they may not be in the best of shape to play in the Champions League.
