Alam ko namang di mataas ang pagtangkilik sa Jrs ng UAAP. Pero dapat lang yata may sariling thread ang bawat team- pati Juniors. More so for FEU in light of the recent developments.

Baka di pa alam ng madla, former MAPUA Cardinal coach Horacio Lim is now handling the Baby Tams. I saw him coaching the team in the FMC.

Given his track record with the Mapua Red Robins, where I think ( correct me kung mali) he won about 5 NCAA titles in the years before Mapua HS was closed down for enrollment, the Baby Tams should be expected to consistently position itself as a title contender from hereon.

Tanong lang, with how Montinola is handling the Rivera case, mahihirapan yata sila mag-recruit ng magagaling na player. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

^ Bakit naman si Horacio Lim pa? Magaling na coach nga pero wala namang GMRC. Sabagay, basketball lang nga naman ang pinag uusapan dito. :)

Ano yan, contest ng coaches?

Whoever fares well, measured in terms of final placings, will get the head coaching job for Season70?

Paano pag pareho ng placings? ( I doubt if an UAAP team will actually make the finals at either the FMC or NSL. Unless the luck of the draw would pit the NCAA squads early in the playoffs.)

Anytime you take in a multi-titled elder coach to help your program, he takes the post of a consultant. When you actually make him coach the team in an actual competition, ibang usapan na yun.

Sabagay, ibang klase tumakbo ang utak ni Montinola. ;D ;D ;D

If one would recall how Montinola made coaching changes at the Seniors team whenever it would fail bigtime, hindi malayo palitan ng tuluyan si De Vera.

The Baby Tams were favored to win over the Eaglets last season. But they failed to do so. Precedents will tell us, that defeat was enough reason for Montinola to change the coach.

Consultant lang nga ba?

That was not how Lim was acting in the FEU-CKS game and I doubt if anyone is privy to what was agreed upon by Montinola and Lim. At dahil wala namang nakakaalam kung ano ang napagkasunduan nila, titignan ko na lang kung paano umasta si Lim sa sidelines.

3 Bacolod HS Cagers to FEU (http://negrosdaily.com/may0308s2)
May 3, 2008
www.negrosdaily.com

Three Bacolod junior varsity basketball players from different high schools here were recruited recently to beef up the junior varsity basketball team of Far Eastern University in Manila in the upcoming opening of 2008-2009 school years.

This came following the conduct of tryout by FEU junior varsity coach Horacio Lim at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod City Tay Tung High School. The target of his tryout was the incoming secondary freshmen who stand at least 6 feet up.

Trnity Christian School coach Nene Lapore said that three passed the tryout and will don the FEU uniform come June. The lucky trios are Scott Salvacion of St. Joseph High School-La Salle, Don Odango of Trinity Christian School and Stanley Mengullo whose address was not mentioned.

Odango will be joining his partner Gem San Jose who was recruited by the Baby Tamaraws last year. The former TCS center in now playing the position of off guard and small forward.

Salvacion is the son of Tony who is working with the Air Transportation Office and is a part-time referee under the group of Bert Nonan. Mengullo has no available data.

The three high school players will be among the many recruits from Bacolod City. Some go to Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School in Iloilo City. Others go to Manila either to play in the NCAA or UAAP.

There is no question that there is abundance of skillful and talented cagers from sugarlandia. Even Coach Pido Jarencio of University of Sto. Tomas was here last NOPSSCEA competition watching the boys who might follow the footsteps of Nonoy Baclao of Ateneo de Manila University whom Norman Black recruited.

Odango, according to his father has trained at ICHS but went home when he feel homesick. This new batch of hopefuls will meet those Negrenses who have gone ahead of them when recruited by NCR coaches and scouts who find sugarlandia a haven of potential basketball stars.*

Baby Tams frustrate Zobel boys
By Reuben Terrado
http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/09182008/sports04.html

FAR Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Educational Foundational (FEU-FERN) erased De La Salle-Zobel’s bid to repeat as champion with a 58-56 victory Wednesday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 71 juniors’ basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Baby Tamaraws slammed the door on the Junior Archers, who owned a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals. The Baby Tamaraws won their initial encounter, 72-70, in double overtime.

They will now face Ateneo in a best-of-three series for the title that will start 3 p.m. on Saturday also at The Arena.

“We came into this series as the underdog and we know we have to do our best,” said FEU-FERN coach Horacio Lim, who took over the team this season. “And doing our best is to play team defense.”

Chris Tolomia, brother of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Chester Tolomia of San Miguel Beer, made the crucial baskets in the fourth to finish with 13 points, including seven in the final quarter.

Russel Escoto also scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Chino Almario had 10 points, including four in the fourth quarter. Almario and Tolomia were the only scorers for the Baby Tamaraws in the fourth.

Baby Tams gain finals
by Jonas Terrado
http://www.tempo.com.ph/news.php?aid=40873

FEU-Nicanor Reyes Education Foundation dethroned defending champion De La Salle Zobel, 58-56, to reach the finals of the 71st UAAP juniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

The Baby Tamaraws, who placed third after the elimination round, leaned on the second half performance of Chris Tolomia, big man Russel Escoto and Chino Almario to upset the heavily-favored Junior Archers, who tallied a 12-2 record during the elims.

Tolomia, the younger brother of current San Miguel Beermen Chester Tolomia, exploded for 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting along with nine rebounds and four assists while Escoto recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks

Almario, a possible Mythical Five candidate, added 10 points and eight rebounds as they outscored Zobel, 30-22, after trailing by six at halftime.

With the victory, FEU-NREF meets top-seed Ateneo de Manila in a best-of-three finals series which starts on Saturday, also at The Arena.

In the women’s division, Far Eastern University and University of the Philippines arrange a best-of-three finals affair by winning their respective knockout matches.

The Lady Tamaraws, the top team after the elimination round, sent home Adamson University, 74-63, while the Lady Maroons eliminated University of Santo Tomas, 50-46.

FEU’s Chovi Borja recovered from a disappointing game last time when she scored 16 points and added five rebounds and three assists.

Two of the key factors for the Baby Tams in their win over Zobel was that their wingmen and guards brought the team on both ends. In the first game, it was Arwin Albano who abused the Zobel big men by driving inside or either him hitting the three-pointer and in the KO match, Chris Tolomia and Chino Almario was consistent offensively.

Another thing was the defense, although Capacio got his usual points, the other bigs such as Aiki Herrera struggled inside while Capacio was missing some easy shots inside because of the presence of Russel Escoto (parang Don yabut). Aside from that, the guards were hounding Nico Elorde that ruined his game.

Tough task for the Baby Tams, Ateneo is quite a team that emphasizes a team-oriented, half-court game and also plays tremendous defense.

Russel Escoto will be in the spotlight more than any of the other Baby Tams in their series versus the Blue Eaglets.

He came into Season 71 as just the "tall one" on the FEU-FERN lineup and wrapped up the elims and the Final 4 as the leading contender for the junior division ROY.

His ability to block shots and get even long rebounds with his height and long limbs will be invaluable to the cause of Coach Horacio Lim. Forget about the points - if Escoto can control the boards and block shots he would've already earned his spot on the team. Also, more of the basketball world will be watching how he does in this series, and this is where his stock as a player will undoubtedly rise. At his height and with his athletic abilities they won't look too much at turnovers or errors, as long as he gets the rebounds and blocks. If he can control the shaded lane for FEU-FERN especially against the slashers of Ateneo FEU-FERN will lock up this season having upset the two best high school teams in the UAAP.

How old is this kid ? Hope he is between 15 to 16 years old on ly, still enough time for growth both physically and in basketball sense. At 6-6 , this kid has a lot of upside. With proper guidance , hopefully he can develop into a taller version of Arwind Santos. Imagine once he mature, a 6-10 ARWIND SANTOS. Worse case is probably a Raffi Ravis, best case scenario a Pinoy version of Chris Bosh. He was not given enough touches down low though. but those eye in the sky are a site to behold.

FEU is very fortunate to have in its vast arsenal of tall lanky athletic 6-6 prototypes in their lineup. In their Senior Team B team, it has National Youth pool members Sangalang said to be between 6-6 to 6-7 and Marquinez a 6-6 kid. What is good with these 2 Youth standout is that they can shoot fronm the perimeter not your usual postup bigmen. If these kid gets proper training , they could be the corner stone of the National Team. I do hope Coaches wont be tempted to convert these kids into backdown postup player since that is not their forte. These kids a finesse type faceup type of big kids suited for international play.
