NCAA imposes one-year ban on PCU

The NCAA Policy Board yesterday slapped a one-year suspension on Philippine Christian University for fielding in a high school basketball player later found to be involved in "identity switching."

In a statement, the board said it voted unanimously for the suspension with hopes of giving PCU time to institute reforms on its recruitment program.

Incoming NCAA president Vince Fabella of Jose Rizal, host of the 83rd NCAA, presided over the meeting at the Jose Rizal University attended by heads and presidents of member schools except for PCU president Dr. Oscar Suarez.

"In a special meeting held at JRU, the NCAA Policy Board unanimously decided to suspend Philippine Christian University for one year in all events of the 83rd Season of the NCAA effective immediately," said the board in a statement released last night.

The board said it based its decision on two investigations conducted by the league, headed by Henry Atayde of St. Benilde, and by PCU itself under its athletic director Alfredo Olano.

"The findings of both inquiries have proven that there was indeed identity switching. The policy board considered the findings as a grave violation of the core objectives of the NCAA," the board added.

With the suspension, all the games of the Baby Dolphins, who finished runner-up to the San Sebastian Staglets, in Season 82 will be forfeited.

"The policy board also upheld the recommendations of the management committee to forfeit all games of the Baby Dolphins, return their second place trophy together with individual awards and ban the player involved from future participation in the league," the statement added.

"The board wishes to stress that all member schools of NCAA have much to learn from this experience and that the board decision should not be interpreted as singling out PCU," Fabella said. "The board believes that institutional responsibility is important in the NCAA, hence its decision."

The name of the player found to have played as a Baby Dolphin was Jaypee Importante, who switched identities with another person.

Had PCU Pres. Suarez attended that Board meeting, it may not have resulted to this outcome.

Kahit man lang daw sana isang representative who can speak in behalf of PCU ay nagpadala . When, in fact, alam ng lahat ng bawat miembro kung ano ang agenda sa araw na iyon.

The case was reviewed and possible sanctions were deliberated and with no one from PCU to defend itself or at least present something that would mitigate... ano pa nga ba ang aasahan ng PCU?

Daming kawawa.

The team in Blue and White were very much in high spirits, no inclination that this summer build up is all for nothing.

At yung mga recruit ni Dualan from Clarence ay uupo uli ng isang taon, that is kung di pa sila 25 years old by next season.

Pero ang pinakasayang ay si Jason Castro. NCAA followers believe he is due to attain superstar status this Season83.

Daming nasayang dahil sa kahayupan ng ilan. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Appeal? Kalimutan niyo yan.

Sayang sina Beau Belga, Liztian Amparado, Robby David, et. al.

NCAA slaps one-year suspension on PCU

MANILA, Philippines -- The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) on Monday slapped a one-year suspension on Philippine Christian University after four members of the school’s junior basketball team were found guilty of using bogus identities.

“The NCAA policy board unanimously decided to suspend (PCU) for one year in all events of the 83rd season of the NCAA effective immediately,” said NCAA policy board president Vincent Fabella of Jose Rizal University, in a statement released after a special meeting held at JRU.

“The findings of both the inquiry of NCAA Management Committee and investigation of PCU has proven that there was indeed identity switching. The policy board considered this finding as a grave violation of the core objectives of the NCAA,” Fabella added.

The league imposed its first year-long ban on a member for eligibility infraction after the two NCAA probe bodies were able to establish that junior players JP Importante, James and Cesar Degano and Victor Miguel Oliveros used falsified school records to get into the Baby Dolphins lineup.

The four players were ordered banned from the NCAA and the Baby Dolphins were asked to return their second-place trophy together with individual awards.

PCU president Oscar Suarez said the school is accepting the decision of the NCAA policy board, which also called for the forfeiture of PCU’s third place overall trophy in the high school division.

“This is a lesson learned,”' said Suarez in another statement. “Just because of some erring personnel and athletes our school was gravely affected.”

However, the Dolphins will get to keep their seniors overall championship.

How the four players pulled off the identity switch was not clearly explained. Officials merely said that the players submitted the school records of either a brother or a cousin to meet the 18-year age limit for high school cagers.

Fred Olano, PCU’s representative to the management committee, said they have already fired the coaching staff of the junior squad headed by Bong Sales.

The decision recalls a similar ban imposed by the UAAP on De La Salle University last year for fielding two ineligible senior basketball players.

The NCAA mancom members reportedly sought the season ban on PCU after receiving more evidences of fraud committed by the school in other sports.

But the statement from Fabella did not mention any other PCU violation.

The Dolphins finished second San Beda College last year and would have introduced junior stalwarts like MVP Elvin Pascual to this year’s senior team.

hi! :)

oh well... it seems like this issue is going to hound PCU for a long time. :o

mabuti sana kung tinolerate lang. i am currently reading posts in PEx that accuse certain PCU officials of masterminding the forgery issue involving Importante. ang matindi nito, pati daw sina Espinas at Solis ay pinaghihinalaan na nameke din katulad ni Importante. :o

seems like PCU is not only facing a one-year suspension but also expulsion from the NCAA. sad developments indeed. :(

1YEAR SUSPENSION IS a VERY LIGHT SENTENCE CONSIDERING THE GRAVITY OF THE OFFENSE...The school officials seems to be in cahoots or simply acted in bad faith. Imagine coming on the heels of a similar fiasco that rocked the UAAP. In comparison, mas malala pa ata ito kaysa sa nanyari dun sa Lasalle,..Hindi man lang kinilabutan sa consequence kung sakaling magkabukingan. Ayan tuloy NABUKING. >:(

Well, the show must go in. In less than 2 months NCAA na. The #2 slot in the F4 is now wide open :)

Actually, when Atayde decided to start an investigation, he publicly stated it all started from text messages received by higher officials of the NCAA, both the Board and ManCom. At first, the Board would not authorize an investigation dahil wala raw formal complaint. But Atayde added, a lot of information/ details were being fed to them only an "insider" (hence taga-PCU) could possibly be aware of. So, he just picked ONE lead to test the credibility of the information they were receiving. Ayun, totoo nga. The other cases where then investigated with the authority of the Board. But, to date, officially there has been no statement as to WHO sent those text msgs.

Months before this "identity-switching" even become rumors, PCU President Suarez has been plagued with accusations and court cases filed by employees of PCU.

IMO, the informant came from the "anti-Suarez" ranks. They probably want to shame Suarez and "cleanse" their school.

hi! :)

lastly, how come walang tanggalan na nangyayari sa PCU in lieu of this latest scandal? aba, kung ako kay Suarez eh heads will roll given the shame that such scandal is bringing to PCU's honor and reputation as an institution of higher learning. ::)

I don't think there's a need to identify that person. They also wanted to protect him, that's why they never mentioned his identity. Besides, this is immaterial already. For whatever motives he may have, this will all be for the good of PCU in particular and the NCAA in general.

Greed always wields is ugly head in cases like these. Hindi naman kailangan mandaya para lang manalo. Ok lang matalo huwag lang mandaya. ;D

Apparently the preceived economic or social incetive to cheat is huge. If the incentive to cheat is not that huge, then cheating may not be worth the hassle.

Madami na talagang mandaraya sa amateur sports. Amateur sports pa lang yan. ;D

No one from the NCAA said it was a "player". They just assumed then that it was an insider considering the nature of information they were receiving.
