2 new teams join PBL’s Silver Cup

AMATEUR cage action gets more competitive as two new teams join the Philippine Basketball League (PBL).

Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala and Mail and More will be competing in the season-opening tournament billed as the Silver Cup starting Nov. 11.

The league board approved the inclusion of the two squads as guest teams yesterday.

Luigi Trillo will call the shots for Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala, which will be back after a 2-year absence in the league.

“We have a long and colorful history with the PBL when it was still known as the PABL (Philippine Amateur Basketball League),” said owner Jean Henri Lhuillier.

Mail and More, one of the flagships of the Lina Group of Companies, will announce its head coach soon.

“We are grateful to the owners and officials of the two squads for believing in our vision and goals in the league,” said PBL commissioner Chino Trinidad.

Both teams aim to beef up their rosters by tapping marquee collegiate players during the rookie draft tomorrow.

The newcomers hope to challenge the league’s established teams like Harbour Centre and Magnolia Ice Cream for supremacy.

Deadline for submission of application for aspiring rookies has been extended until noon today.

wow, another chance for Luigi as head coach. it's his time to prove that his stint with Adamson (2 wins in 3 seasons ? ) was not truly indicative of his coaching abilities.

Magnolia gets brightest from UAAP, NCAA

IT was an easy decision.

“We’ve always wanted him,” said team manager Peter Martin after Magnolia Ice Cream selected Far Eastern University standout Jonas Villanueva as the top overall pick during the PBL Rookie Draft yesterday.

“He’ll be a starting guard for sure. His leadership is going to be a factor. Coach Koy (Banal) always had in mind that Villanueva will start for us.”

Three varsity stars from the University of the East Warriors, selected in succession, will also debut in the PBL Silver Cup next month for different teams.

Versatile forward Mark Borboran went to Hapee, Bonbon Custodio to Magnolia and Kelvin Gregorio to Sista.

“We’re very excited with our rookies,” said Martin after Magnolia also formalized its tieup with 2005 NCAA champion San Beda Red Lions, who also have Banal as coach.

Magnolia elevated several San Beda key players including Pong Escobal, Rogemar Menor and Jay-R Taganas.

Nigerian giant suiting up for Magnolia five?

The Philippine Star 10/19/2006

Power-slamming Nigerian behemoth Samuel Ekwe could bring his act to the Philippine Basketball League.

Ekwe, San Beda’s top rookie and Most Valuable Player awardee in the recent NCAA 82nd NCAA season, will reportedly be allowed to suit up for Magnolia Dairy Ice Cream in the PBL Silver Cup starting Nov. 11.

The Spinners took in the core of the San Beda Red Lions after the Far Eastern Tamaraws disbanded following their disappointing stint in the 69th UAAP season.

Magnolia also enlisted Alex Angeles, Ogie Menor, John Paul Escobal, Riego Gamalinda, Kevin Ray Espinosa, Mikah Evangelista, Kris Taupa, Ed Tecson and Jay-R Taganas, and possibly, the 6-foot-9 Ekwe.

"The board still has to receive a request from Magnolia, but we see no objections," said a PBL official close to commissioner Chino Trinidad.

If ever Ekwe suits up for the Spinners, he would easily fit into the system that has lost the frontline troika of Kelly Williams, Arwind Santos and Mark Isip to the pro league.

"Yes, I think I’ll play," said Ekwe, who came from Lagos to study in the country.

Magnolia is also reportedly trying to acquire 2006 NCAA Finals MVP Yousif Aljamal, also of San Beda, from Sista, formerly Rain or Shine.

The Spinners, who came back from a 0-2 deficit to snatch the title from the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters last year, are hoping the entry of the Red Lions could put in the final pieces of their rebuilding scheme.

Last week, the San Miguel Corp.-owned franchise took in FEU stalwart Jonas Villanueva and University of the East standout Bon Bon Custodio as its rookie picks to join another FEU gunner Jeff Chan in the fold.

Koy Banal, who coached the Lions to this year’s NCAA crown and the Tams to the 2003 UAAP championships, will coach the Spinners. — Joey Villar

By the looks of it Magnolia will be the early favorite to win the Silver Cup. Although they lost their three best players, Arwind Santos, Mark Isip and Kelly Williams to the PBA (as well as valuable rotation players RJ Rizada and Jason Misolas), they seem to be right on track to returning as championship contenders with the core of the NCAA champion San Beda Red Lions. Rookie MVP Sam "Lion King" Ekwe will be the most watched player in the league now and promises to bring new fans to PBL venues. It should be interesting to see how he responds to the more let-go action in the PBL.

Harbor Centre, last conference's champion, has lost its two best players to the PBA, LA Tenorio and Joseph Yeo. They still retain a decent core (assuming none of their other key players get picked up as free agents by PBA teams) with Jerwin Gaco, Jerome Paterno, Christian Luanzon, Marcy Arellano, Ronjay Buenafe and Rico Maeirhofer. But they need to figure out who the new go-to guy is for them, the biggest effect of the loss of Tenorio and Yeo.

Sana mag-magnolia na lang din si Paterno. A Paterno/Aljamal rotation on the powerforward position is almost equivalent to Williams/Santos rotation. Besides Paterno fits better with the defensive minded team that Koy Banal used to have. Though playing for Harbor will have him suit for more playing time as the most matured player for that team.

Aljamal joining pals in Magnolia

The Philippine Star 10/20/2006

Yousif Aljamal, the 2006 NCAA Finals MVP, is joining Nigerian Sam Ekwe and the San Beda Red Lions in the Magnolia Dairy Ice Cream squad for the PBL Silver Cup slated Nov. 11.

Henkel-owned Sista, formerly Rain or Shine, is reportedly giving up Aljamal for future round draft picks.

Magnolia is on a rebuilding process after losing Kelly Williams, Arwind Santos and Mark Isip to the pro league.

"Magnolia has yet to decide but I know they want to get Aljamal because he plays better with his San Beda teammates around," said a source close to Aljamal.

The San Miguel Corp.-owned franchise agreed to take in San Beda, the reigning NCAA champion, as its adopted school in the next two seasons after Far Eastern U disbanded following a disappointing campaign in the 69th UAAP season.

Ekwe, the 2006 NCAA rookie MVP, is set to suit up for the Spinners along with San Beda teammates Ogie Menor, Alex Angeles, John Paul Escobal, Riego Gamalinda, Ed Tecson and Jay-R Taganas among others.

Also in the Spinners’ roster are first round rookie picks Jonas Villanueva from FEU and Bon Bon Custodio from University of the East and another FEU standout Jeff Chan, all three potent scorers.

Koy Banal, who steered the franchise to two PBL titles, will coach the Spinners. Banal was also the coach when FEU topped the UAAP in 2003 and when San Beda reigned supreme in the NCAA this year. — Joey Villar

Harbour Centre taps NU Bulldogs

Inquirer
Last updated 01:38am (Mla time) 11/01/2006

Published on Page A23 of the November 1, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

THE NATIONAL University Bulldogs did not have much success in the UAAP basketball tournament since the days of Danny Ildefonso and Lordy Tugade.

With help from Harbour Centre, the Bulldogs are going to show more bite than growl next year.

In support of the Philippine Basketball League’s “Adopt-A-School” program, Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with NU chief executive officer Teddy Jhocson Ocampo that will help boost the school’s cage program.

“It’s our little way to help a team in need,” said Romero. “NU has a strong basketball team. It has exciting players who need further polishing. That’s one of the reasons why we want to help NU.”

Under the agreement, the Port Masters, champions of the recent Unity Cup, will be getting NU stars Edwin Asoro, Jonathan Fernandez and 6-foot-5 Joseph Lingao to reinforce their coming PBL campaign.

“I’m thankful that Mr. Romero has selected us to be their partner in basketball. I believe our tie-up with Harbour Centre will enhance our image in the basketball community because Harbour Centre is already a proven winner,” said Ocampo.

“With the exposure they will be getting in playing in the PBL under Harbour’s competent coaching staff, I’m sure they will develop their self-confidence and gain maturity.”

Romero and team manager Erick Arejola are already excited with the prospect of having a future James Yap in the team.

“Fernandez is an excellent shooter in the mold of James Yap while Asoro is a high leaper who loves to dunk,” said Romero.

Aside from giving NU the avenue to develop their players, Arejola said they will also help in recruiting players for the Bulldogs.

Super Sealers ready to sizzle in PBL Cup

The Philippine Star 11/01/2006

Philippine Basketball League newcomer Henkel Sista is all set to sizzle in the Silver Cup which kicks off on Nov. 11. Slotman Samigue Eman, former pro Gilbert Malabanan, former San Sebastian College standout Nur Alfad and UE Red Warriors star Marcy Arellano will lead a team composed of promising collegiate dribblers aiming to excel in the league .

Team manager and Henkel Philippines human resource manager Armand Hicarte said Henkel has joined the country’s foremost commercial league in celebration of its 30th years anniversary in the Philippines.

"Our participation is a manifestation of sealing Henkel’s friendship with the Filipino community. In forming Sista Super Sealers, we chose players who are able to bond with the community, exemplify Henkel’s vision and values, and burning passion and commitment to excellence," Hicarte said, adding that their partnership with the College of St. Benilde enabled them to pick young players that fit the profile perfectly.

He said the PBL’s vision on youth development ties in with Henkel’s intent of contributing to cause-worthy programs in countries where it operates its business.

"Basketball is a popular sport among the youth which espouses teamwork – an important value that we can help develop in our youth today who are the future leaders of our nation," he said.

Caloy Garcia, currently St. Benilde head coach and Welcoat Dragon’s assistant coach, will lead the rookie team. Jude Roque is deputy manager.

Kettle Korn, UST join forces in PBL title bid

www.mb.com.ph

JOEY CONCEPCION, Elmer Yanga and Pido Jarencio – the old hands of the league – are back, each one hoping to rekindle their love affairs with the Philippine Basketball League.

For Concepcion, the young and innovative owner of Food Cart Concepts, Inc., it’s high time to rejoin the league which he helped, cared and nurtured to become the country’s premier amateur basketball league.

"The passion and desire of Mr. Concepcion for basketball has not diminished, so the decision to rejoin the league was easy," said Yanga who together with Concepcion formed one of the most successful partnerships in the league.

And getting a team to represent his new product – Kettle Korn – was not a problem, too.

Since Kettle Korn is fast becoming one of favorite snacks among kids and adults, Concepcion and Yanga decided to tap the hottest collegiate squad in the country – the University of Santo Tomas Tigers.

The Tigers, starring Jojo Duncil, Allan Evangelista, Jervy Cruz and a slew of gallant warriors, outlasted the highly favored Ateneo in a classic best-of-3 finals series to win the UAAP crown.

UST’s victory, gave Jarencio his first championship in the league, an honor he never experienced during his celebrated days as the team’s top gunner in the early 80s.

But can the Tigers bring their act to the higher stage like PBL?

Jarencio, straightforward that he is, thinks so.

"We have to adjust to the kind of game in the PBL, kung hindi kami magtra-trabaho ng husto walang mangyayari sa amin, so kailangan handa rin kami," said Jarencio. "Doon naman ang pupuntahan nila e, kaya dapat palaban sila.

Concepcion and Yanga have set a modest target for the team.

"We don’t expect much from them, but I know them very well, they have big fighting hearts," said Yanga. "If we can advance to the quarters, then that’s good for us."

Duncil, Evangelista will be joined by former UST stars Warren de Guzman and Derrick Hubalde. Also in the team are Anthony Espiritu, Dylon Ababou, Jun Dizon, Mark Canlas, Japs Cuan, Jun Cortez and Francis Allera.

It will take two to three games before the Kettle Korn Tigers could adjust fully to the brand of game in the PBL but Jarencio believes his boys – just like what they did in the UAAP – are up to the challenge.

Ekwe: A new PBL attraction

www.mb.com.ph

SAMUEL EKWE, the 6-foot-8 find from Nigeria, may have difficulty making his shots from the perimeter, much more from the penalty area, but he’s going to play a big, big role in Magnolia Ice Cream’s title campaign in the coming PBL Silver Cup.

Blessed with a speed of football player and a frame like a refrigerator, Ekwe, who became only the second player in the history of NCAA to win both the Rookie and MVP honors when he helped San Beda College win the NCAA title, will certainly create lots of problems for Magnolia’s opposing teams.

His addition to Magnolia, have made the Spinners a lot more dangerous, and this early, they’re being considered as the team to beat.

But don’t tell that to coach Koy Banal.

Despite Ekwe’s presence, Banal remains wary of the overall size of the team.

"We are a short team," said Banal. "Even with Sam, if you compare us with other teams, they have a legitimate 3-man (small forward) who stands at 6foot-4 or 6-foot-5."

Unlike the past three years when the FEU Tamaraws dominated the roster, the San Beda Lions will now make up the core of Magnolia plus a handful of star players from other schools. Magnolia and San Beda have a two-year basketball program.

While they lack the needed ceiling, Magnolia boasts of the league’s finest shooting guards in Jonas

Villanueva of Far Eastern University and Bonbon Custudio of University of the East. They also have Jeff Chan, another FEU star, to lean on when the going gets tough.

"We’re quick, but almost half of them are rookies in the PBL," said Banal, also the coach of San Beda. "We’re still working on the chemistry of the team. But it’s not that hard. The players that we picked have the right attitude and they can easily go well with the other players."

Actually, Magnolia has already a formidable starting five in Ekwe, Custudio, Villanueva, Chan and NCAA Finals MVP Yousif Aljamal, also of San Beda.

Also in the lineup are shooter Pong Escobal, Ogie Menor, Alex Angeles, Riego Gamalinda and JayR Taganas – all from San Beda.

Magnolia may have three of the league’s shooters in Custudio, Chan and Villanueva, but its success hinges on the performance of Ekwe – NCAA’s top rebounder and blocker.

PBL Commissioner Chino Trinidad said the presence of Ekwe, who averaged 8.5 points, 14 boards and 2.8 blocks per game for San Beda, could change the complexion of the game in the country’s premier amateur basketball league.

"There will be changes in the complexion of the PBL because you have a 6foot-8 who gets all the rebounds and contests all the shots," said Trinidad. "But at the end of the day, basketball is still a team sport."

Ekwe, however, has to improve his free throw shooting. In the NCAA, he’s one of the worst shooters as he made only 26 of 68 tries. But his field goal percentage is quite impressive, posting 45 percent on 59-of-130 – thanks to his imposing size.

With his built, Ekwe could emerge one of the league’s top attractions in the season-opening tournament set to start on Nov. 11.

UAAP big men Lhuillier’s gems

The Philippine Star 11/03/2006

Coach Luigi Trillo isn’t promising anything when Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala returns to the PBL starting with the staging of the Silver Cup on Nov. 11.

For one, Trillo will have two of UAAP’s imposing big men — Adamson’s Ken Bono and Ateneo’s Doug Kramer. Put in Macky Escalona, Ramil Tagupa, Erick dela Cuesta, Emerson Oreta and Mark Abadia and Cebuana Lhuillier’s rivals are indeed in for a big surprise.

Trillo also tapped a pair of veteran 6-foot-5 players in Abby Santos and Alwyn Espiritu, both a threat inside and outside, and a rugged player in 6-foot-3 Mark Yee, who despite his lean frame is as tough as nail in defense skills.

Also in the roster are former National University star Rey Mendoza, Mapua’s Joeferson Gonzales and Don Dulay.

The 6-foot-5 Bono is the hottest collegiate player these days, having won the MVP honors in the UAAP after beating Ateneo’s JC Intal in one of the league’s most tightly-fought contests for the highest individual award.

Actually, it’s a reunion of sorts for Trillo and his former Adamson boys, including Bono, Tagupa and Abadia.

"At least they know my system already but the rest, they are still trying to adapt to my system and that’s my concern right now," said Trillo. "PBL is a different league compared to UAAP and other leagues so Bono and the rest of the members of the team will have to raise their game."

But it’s not going to be a problem for Bono.

In the Unity Cup early this year, the beefy center from Iloilo won the Quantum Leap award for being the most improved player, a feat that earned him a spot in the Second Mythical Team.

"We should not rely much on Bono, we must be flexible so that we can adapt to any kind of game," said Trillo, hoping that they could find the right chemistry before the tournament starts.

But with a tall and star-studded line-up, they are expected to reclaim the status the team enjoyed during the time of Samboy Lim and company.

^ A frontline composed of Bono, Kramer, Abby Santos, Espiritu and Rey Mendoza. These are all quality big men from the UAAP. Now, that's sick!* :o

LION
11-03-2006, 01:37 PM
^^^ Indeed the Lhuillier Gems has the most imposing frontline combined. Lhuillier Gems can rely on these 4 - 5 big men to dominate the paint while Sam Ekwe is the only legitimate center for Magnolia. If the Gems will employ gang rebounding using 2 or 3 frontliners, baka maipit sa loob si Ekwe.

Magandang laban ito.

May Erick Dela Cuesta at Alwyn Espiritu sa Cebuana Lhuillier.

May Erick Dela Cuesta at Alwyn Espiritu sa Mail N More.

MVBA, they are using the Lhuillier name, and apparently engage in the business most associated with the Lhuilliers - at least as far as most city folk hereabouts can recall - which is jewelry and pawnshops. Perhaps instead of blowing a gasket you could further explain what makes this Lhuillier PBL team totally different (and thus totally unrelated) to the legendary Lhuillier PABL team of Avelino "Samboy" Lim.

Because it seems to still be the same Lhuillier family (or at least members of that illustrious sport-loving clan) continuing a fine family tradition of involvement in organized mainstream (and to some extent developmental) competitive basketball. It seems simply saying this is a totally different corporation is merely picking nits. If this team has "Lhuillier" in its name, and they are playing in the country's premiere semi-pro/commercial league, then they are, at least to any ordinary and reasonable basketball fan, carrying on a fine tradition dating back to the time there was a team called "Lhuillier" bannered by the one and only Skywalker.

Aside from the SEC and DTI registration, what makes this team different? No one has heard the Lhuilliers, like Jean Henri for instance, come out in the press and vociferously attack this PBL team for being frauds or for carrying the name without the clan's blessings or permission. So if only for that, is it not reasonable to assume that this is an honest-to-goodness Lhuillier team indeed carrying on a prestigious basketball tradition?

The Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala team is owned by Jean-Henri Lhuillier, husband of former gymnast Bea Lucero and owner of the Cebu Gems team in the old MBA league.

Speaking of Cebuana, Alwin Espiritu has opted not to join the team this conference. He is currently playing for Osmena Cebu in the NBC.

Their official lineup is therefore as follows:

Kenneth Bono
Doug Kramer
Macky Escalona
Ramil Tagupa
Erick dela Cuesta
Ira Buyco
Emmerson Oreta
Mark Abadia
Abby Santos
Rey Mendoza

* * *Ever since leaving the then PABL in the late 80's, the M. Lhuillier Jewelers have continuously existed by competing in local tournaments in Cebu, national inter-club tournaments and some international stints.* They later went on to play in organized leagues like the CBL, NBL and URBL before joining the newly-formed MVBA this year.* The Jewelers are the most dominating and most feared commercial team in the Vis-Min area for the last two decades headed by the legendary Coach Raul Alcoseba.

* * *On the other hand, the other Lhuiller team can trace its genesis to 1998 when they bankrolled the Cebu Gems of the old MBA.* When the pro league disbanded, they continued to maintain a local team in the CBF (a breakaway faction from the CBL) composed of some of their former players, albeit for a short time.

* * *It is to be noted that the MBA-Cebu franchise was originally offered to M. Lhuillier because of its tradition, know-how and financial backbone but Senorito Michel politely declined.

Mail and More hopes to deliver

www.mb.com.ph

JUST EVERYBODY recognizes the Mail and More ball club as a welcome addition to the Philippine Basketball League, one which could bring out added excitement and new dimension to the league.

Mail and More may not rank among the strongest on paper but the Comets, with a mix of youth, experience, height and speed, could be a dark horse in the tourney.

Coach Lawrence Chongson has as his disposal a promising roster bannered by former pro Michael Bravo and Cebu sensation Joseph "Baby Shaq" Quinahan.

"Expect Mail and More to play exciting up-tempo basketball. This team will hustle, run and fight till the final buzzer. Other teams will be in for a big surprise if they take us lightly," said Mail and More president and team manager Johann Ramos.

"My team is like a souped-up sports car just waiting for the starting gate to open. We’ll be in the hunt to give the other teams a run for their money. The key here is desire," said Chongson.

"I’m looking forward to a good showing right in our maiden voyage in the PBL. I have a good lineup with a combination of many things. We could play fast or deliberate, big or small," Chongson added.

Also in the lineup are University of the Assumption’s Marvin Yambao, JRU’s Kenneth Coyukang and Wynsjohn Te, San Sebastian’s Jim Viray and Jason Ballesteros, UE’s Elmer Espiritu and Jorel Canizares, Mapua’s Jerby del Rosario, La Salle Manila’s JR Aquino, UP’s Nestor David, UST’s Danny Pribhdas and Ronjay Buenafe.

Chongson’s assistants are Renaldo Baena and Allan Gregorio with Joel Palapal as trainer and Christian Pangan physical therapist.

"Puro may pangalan na ang players ko. Maganda ang background I’m just invoking to them poise and smartness because PBL is a notch higher than the collegiate leagues," Chongson said.

They may still have lots of things to work on but the Comets could give the opposition a good fight, especially if Bravo and Quinahan take on the leader’s role and truly act like one.

Mail and More could bank on the inside games of Canizares, Co Yu Kang, Espirutu and Del Rosario, outside threat from Te, David and Bravo, and the all-around game of Quinahan.

The Comets open their campaign Thursday against the Harbour Centre Portmasters.

"Ang plano ko diyan i-start yung mga hard-workers ko before fielding in my regular starters," said Chongson.

after all the hoopla about intal refusing to play for harbour, not wanting to be separated from his ateneo teammates and all that issues as being a "star complex" player, what then convinced him to* sign with harbour? please let us not hear about the love for the game stuff.

well if we are to base it on news specualtion, his vaunted athleticism which paved the way for the baby rocket tag pales in comparison to the skyrocketing, astronomical contract he demanded. emphasis on the demanded, not as a contract offered.

Since you've brought this up, Joelex, would you care to provide one specific concrete detail? I for one would love to know how much exactly JC Intal allegedly "demanded" from Harbour Centre. I personally know Mikey Romero as an astute and reasonable business person. I've even done business with him before when I was still involved in cargo forwarding, and he certainly doesn't strike me as somebody who would let himself be waylaid into signing up a player with a "polluted na utak" just to get his PBL team into the win column.

first of all, my information comes from reliable SOURCES and if it turns out to be negative as far as Jc Intal is concerned, so be it. i have no intention to cast a bad shadow on your rising star but sadly all the information i receive tend to show the player's bad side.

now about the player's other wishes...

let's just say he wanted a change in the harbour coaching staff..a drastic change at that which involves personnel form a PBA team.

again, all these information are first hand and it just turns out it puts the player in a bad light. this is not a diss on ateneo as far as im concerned.

Since you've brought this up, Joelex, would you care to provide one specific concrete detail? I for one would love to know how much exactly JC Intal allegedly "demanded" from Harbour Centre. I personally know Mikey Romero as an astute and reasonable business person. I've even done business with him before when I was still involved in cargo forwarding, and he certainly doesn't strike me as somebody who would let himself be waylaid into signing up a player with a "polluted na utak" just to get his PBL team into the win column.* *

p50,000

the other demand the player asked didnt involve money, as stated below in my other post.

you are right about mr romero, that he wouldnt sign up a player with a "polluted na utak" just to win, because when intal asked for a change in the coaching staff, he backed out on him. only when intal accpeted that his wish wouldnt be possible did the owner and the player come into terms.

again i would like to clear that i have no affiliation with any UAAP school and i have nothing against ateneo and jc intal, i merely share all first hand info i get being an basketball fan, unfortunately my sources are one in all the informarion i received.

JC intal requesting for a change in the harbour coaching staff?!? that's the craziest rumor ever attributed to JC, joelex. look, if there's anything you need to know about JC is he's the most coachable player there is. from his rookie year in 2002, he's been under three head coaches, none of which have had any sour experiences with him. so you tell me, why would JC "demand" to replace jorge gallent and his coaching staff when he's had no direct experience playing for him? the only head coach's he ever played for in the PBL is sandy arespacochaga, who was also his coach in ateneo.

next time, sasalain mong mabuti ang naririnig mo.

all i said was a change in the coaching staff. which in his said request would include a very close associate of his to the staff of harbour which was turned down.

my sources comes from people very close to the romeros because of an impending deal that would elevate Harbour Center into the pro ranks in the very near future, which gives me enough confidence in the accuracy of the information i receive..

OK. JC did not demand that salary from Harbour. Harbour offered him the maximum pay allowed from the initial meeting that they had. There are several reasons why he did not suit up for Harbour initially but none of them include wanting more money or insisting on the replacement of someone from the coaching staff. Geez.

Just a sidelight: after the game vs. Kettlecorn, the coaching staff of Harbour was sharing that they were thankful to JC for his insights on the plays and strategies of Kettlecorn-UST which helped them formulate an effective game plan. So, yan ba uncoachable? ::)

here's the thing about sources - they do not always have the correct information.

i posted this in another thread, but it applies here as well:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
there's a saying, there's always three sides of the truth - the two sides, and what actually happened.

it really doesn't matter what sportswriters/gossip columnists project, as long as the team and management appreciate his play and presence.* the real truth lies out on the basketball court, which should translate into wins.* i tend not to believe when the hype is too high, or when the bashing is too violent.* evryone has an agenda, so as long as the teams win, and the players get along, that's the most important element.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
as an example,* one could say opposing players/basketball purists/experts* may hate jerwin gaco for being a rough/dirty player,* but i'm sure his teamates/coaches love having him on the floor because he protects his teamates and he hustles all the time.* and from the looks of the last game, i'm sure gaco and jc like playing with each other as well.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

since there seems to be an agreement to disagree, suggest we move onto a more productive topic* :)

yup, heard about it too, but i know that included for him to play out his final year in FEU in the UAAP, since SMC also supports the FEU squad. not solely a PBL contract..opportunity cost for him iyun dahil hindi siya nag declare for the PBA draft.

kung sasama natin ang support given by the schools, then no one beats mr. pangilinan in support, lalo na monetary, no problem yan.* :) but dont get me wrong, although it may be frowned upon by the less-funded schools, he has the resources so he has all the right to use it

bottom line is, regular PBL salary ranges from a minimum p8k/month to p35k for the 'franchise' players. so i dont think p50k is small just for a PBL contract.

lately ive noticed that more and more PBA reserves are seeing action in the PBL. is there any rule regarding this matter? take for example abby santos .after being drafted by welcoat, he ended up in talk and text's reserve list, but suddenly he is playing for CL in the PBL. Then all of a sudden, he gets traded by talk and text to air 21! can players move up and down the PBA and the PBL with this kind of ease today? i just thought there was some rule regarding this. Luanzon is another example, and also Neil Raneses of Magnolia. are they cut from their pro teams lineup or are they merely allowed to play elsewhere?

..however, for some reason nanaman (do feel free to fill in the missing information!), Hapee gave up its hold on the two players and shipped them off to Harbour Centre. They practiced with Harbour Centre this afternoon at the Reyes Gym..

MVP Castro jumps ship, joins Harbour Centre 5

Inquirer
Last updated 03:03am (Mla time) 03/09/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- A week after Philippine Christian University pulled out its seven players from Hapee Toothpaste, two of its standouts -- Silver Cup Most Valuable Player Jason Castro and slotman Beau Belga -- jumped ship to Harbour Centre.

“Castro has blossomed into one of the league’s versatile players,” said Mikee Romero, team owner of Harbour Centre, which will sport the “Batang Pier” moniker next conference.

“He’s one of the players we want, very exciting and hardworking,” Romero added in a released statement.

Just last week, PCU officials said that the Dolphins recalled their seven players in the Philippine Basketball League to focus on the NCAA campaign.

The moved followed the pullout of other collegiate standouts by school teams San Beda College and the University of East.

Castro and Belga beef up an already formidable Harbour Centre roster that includes team star JC Intal, Finals MVP Chico Lanete, Finals Pivotal Player Jonathan Fernandez, Ryan Araña and Edwin Asoro.

Harbour Centre swept the Castro-led Hapee Teeth Masters, 3-0, in the Silver Cup finals last month.

“Our other players are excited to have Jason,” said team manager Erick Arejola. “We now have a deeper bench, especially in the backcourt.”

Harbour Centre, meanwhile, gave up Reed Juntilla, Bogart Raymundo and its first-round draft pick in the 2008 season to Hapee.

Castro, a crafty 5-foot-8 guard, actually debuted with Harbour Centre before PCU forged a partnership with Hapee three conferences ago.

The development further boosted Harbour Centre’s bid for a third straight championship in the PBL Unity Cup, which fires off on March 24. -- Jasmine W. Payo

Castro traded to Harbour Centre

The Philippine Star 03/09/2007

Harbour Centre "three-peat" bid for the coming PBL Unity Cup got a big boost with the comeback of Silver Cup MVP Jason Castro in its fold following a four-player trade with Hapee Toothpaste.

After playing his rookie year for Harbour Centre three years ago, the 5-foot-8 Castro played for Hapee for the next three conferences where he carried the Teethmasters into the Silver Cup finals last month.

Though Hapee was swept in a best-of-five title series, Castro earned the admiration of most coaches for his derring-do plays and deadly touch from the 3-point arc traits that won him the coveted MVP plum pulling away.

Aside from Castro, Harbour Centre also acquired the services of the promising 6-foot-6 center Beau Belga.

In return, the Batang Pier shipped the prolific Reed Juntilla and Bogart Raymundo to the Teethmasters and plus their first round pick for the 2008 opening conference.

Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero was elated with the trade, saying: "Castro has blossomed into one of the league’s versatile players. He’s one of the players we want, very exciting and hard-working."

Team manager Erick Arejola said Castro will be a big addition to the team because of his vast wealth of experience. His previous partnership with Gabby Espinas rewarded Philippine Christian University its first NCAA championship three years ago.

"This early our players are excited to have Jason in the team. Original na Batang Pier kasi siya," said Arejola. "Now we have a deeper bench especially in the backcourt."

With Silver Cup Finals MVP Chico Lanete as his backcourt partner, Harbour Centre is again the team to beat in the coming Unity Cup. The Batang Pier won the title last year after downing Toyota Otis in a classic finals encounter.

Aside from the two, Harbour Centre also boasts of a formidable frontcourt combination in Ateneo JC Intal, Chad Alonzo and Jerwin Gaco. They also have defensive specialist Ryan Arana, Jay Coching and the wily Al Vergara.

"We didn’t want to trade Jason, being an MVP, but that’s his wish," said Hapee team manager Bernard Yang. "Besides, Reed started with us so it’s a good trade."

Harbour Centre snags five more college hotshots

By Jasmine W. Payo
Inquirer
Last updated 02:05am (Mla time) 03/13/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Collegiate hotshots seemed to have made a beeline for Philippine Basketball League back-to-back champion Harbour Centre.

Philippine Christian University stars Jason Castro and Beau Belga have hardly warmed up for Harbour Centre when the team snagged four standouts from 2006 UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas and a veteran from De La Salle University.

Batang Pier, the new moniker of Harbour Centre, earned the playing rights to UAAP Finals Most Valuable Player Jojo Duncil, Dylan Ababou, Japs Cuan and June Dizon, plus Archers point guard TY Tang following the dispersal draft of players from disbanded Kettle Korn-UST and TeleTech.

Team manager Erick Arejola said, however, that Harbour Centre is still awaiting word from school officials if the five new recruits would be allowed to play in the coming 2007 Unity Cup.

Defending NCAA champion San Beda College and UAAP powerhouse University of the East have recently recalled their players to focus on their collegiate campaigns.

PCU likewise pulled out its seven players from Hapee, but a week later, Silver Cup MVP Castro and Belga jumped ship to Harbour Centre.

Batang Pier already boasts an intimidating cast bannered by JC Intal of Ateneo de Manila University, Ryan Araña and Jerwin Gaco of La Salle, Edwin Asoro and Jonathan Fernandez of National University and last conference’s Finals MVP Chico Lanete.

In the recent dispersal draft, Silver Cup runner-up Hapee picked UST’s Anthony Espiritu and Jun Cortez along with veteran Francis Mercado.

Toyota Balintawak acquired Eugene Tan and Paul Guerrero, while Mail and More selected Josh Uzbintondo, Kim Valenzuela, Frederick Hubalde, McDonald Santos and Warren de Guzman.

Sista opted for Don Villamin, Rob Labagala, Mark Canlas, Dennis Concha and Jay Sierra; Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala got Ariel Capus, Mel Latoreno, JR Estrada and Jose Magdadaro; and Magnolia chose Al Magpayo, Alfie Grijaldo, Chester Taylor, Francis Allera and Axel Doruelo.

Harbour Centre, the 2006 Unity Cup and 2007 Silver Cup titleholder, will vie for its third straight championship starting April 10.

Yes Sta. Maria is with Cebuana along with dispersal draft picks Ariel Capus, Mel Latoreno, JR Estrada and Jose Magdadaro. I'm not sure who will be relegated to the reserve list because there are definitely more than 15 players attending the daily practice sessions now.

Rey Mendoza has been given his walking papers by the management. Sean Co missed the last few practices, I don't know for sure if he's already been cut from the team or absent lang.

* * *Michael Burtscher is a 6'4" (some say 6'5") basketball player born of a Swiss father and a Filipina mother.* He first came here in 2005 with a pro stint in mind but was deemed too young.* Thus, Burtscher found his way to San Beda College in Manila and was placed in Team B for one-year residency purposes since he was considered a foreigner.

* * *Blessed with height and foot speed and a good perimeter shot rare of players his size, observers predicted that Burtscher had a lock on one of the spots for San Beda's NCAA 82 quintet (that eventually took home the championship).* Unfortunately, the coaching staff saw otherwise and kept Burtscher on Team B.

* * *Suddenly, Burtscher surprised the Bedan Community by transferring to De La Salle-Manila at the start of school year 2006-2007.* As per UAAP rules, he was required to serve two school years of residency being a foreigner, rendering him eligible only by school year 2008-2009.* Not wanting to wait, Burtscher forfeited his remaining varsity eligibility to play in the PBL.

So Mike B. has decided to forego his varsity eligibility?

He wasted opportunities that any gym rat would love to get-- play big time college ball.

Sayang, kid.

Now, he is in the PBL... just another player hoping to make an impact. With all his athletic gifts, basketball wise hilaw pa siya para sa PBL. So he will probably be toiling there insignificantly for another year or two. All the while he would be seeing and hearing the Red Lions play valiantly at the NCAA.

I hope the kid does well, dahil mukhang hindi umusad ang pag-aaral nito. Pag hindi magkaroon ng career sa basketball, mag-aalala ka saan siya pupunta.

He would have been part of that lore. That Red Lion team of Season 82. When the Red Lions repeat he would again be pondering on what he had missed.

He just missed out on what could probably be the best and most memorable part of his youthful years.

This was not meant to spite the kid. Just to send a message to every to every "recruiter" and "sawa".

D@mn! T@ng 1n@ nyo! (Sorry mods. Di ko lang mapigilan di magalit sa "kahayupan" ng recruiter na yun.)

Why do you have to do that to the kid? Maliwanag na kapakanan niyo lang ang inisip niyo. Mahiya kayo.

Baka sabihin niyo na kayo na rin ang naglakad na kunin siya ng Lhullier? That will never make up for what he was deprived of---- college ball. That is a once in lifetime chance for any kid. Minsan ka lang dadaan dyan, pag lumagpas o nilagpasan ka, wala na. But the kid was there. Inilayo pa.

Simple common sense tells even to the most stupid basketball fan, that sitting another two year-residence just to play at another league is---- outrigth stupid. Not worth it.

I sincerely wish Mike B. the best. Play relax. Don't force your offensive game. For now, concentrate on playing D. You got the lateral moves very few players have. Yan ang pinaka-asset mo. You can stay infront of any player in the PBL. Pero magugulangan ka pa. Don't get frustrated. Huwag ililihis ang isip sa laro.

Ingat ka, kid.

he is more than 6'4. he is initially enlisted at 6'6, i guess. he stands short by 1-2 inches when standing along side Sam Ekwe and Eric Suguitan.

kanya kanyang istorya ng buhay, mahirap nga naman i-forecast ang kahinanatnan. DLSU's training pool is very deep, ma-crack man nya ang team A after two years, ilang taon na lang sya pwede sa college ball 1-2?. This is on the assuption na walang bagong recruit na magaling na swing man ang DLSU in the next two years. But then, nung una pa lang mahihirapan ma-crack nya ang team A ng archers.

this was a long argument when he parted ways mid last year. balikan man natin, wala na rin magagawa. offensively hilaw pa talaga. defensively, he is one of the guys na paborito ni Coach Koy ipasok especially on critical closing minutes.

hope he matures in the PBL. basketball lang ang pinanghahawakan nyan pumunta sa pinas, tanggalin mo ang makapagtapos sa college, i dont see how he will go on kung hindi mag-grow ang basketball career nya.

IMO, he received no encouragement on this one. Just plain and hard, cold reality setting in.

What do I mean?

DLSU has Balades, Marko and indications are Ferdinand will be part of the Season70 line-up. Tatlo na yan, kung aakyat si Mike sa Season 71, apat na silang with non-Pinoy passports.

Wth the UAAP restrictions on students with non-Pinoy passport, anong playing time pa ang makukuha ni Mike B. ?

Ang nakakapanghinayang, you didn't need hindsight to know these downside.

On this one, I think he may have made the right decision. But we can only pray that he is handled well by whoever will be the coach of whichever teams he plays. Dahil na rin sa pananaw natin, di pa siya hinog para sumabak sa PBL.

Good luck uli sa bata.

But yeah, I saw him sa practice ng Cebuana and my observation is the same din: athletic but definitely raw for PBL. And with the kind of lineup his team has, I don't think he'll get enough playing time para mag-mature sya as a player.

I heard though na medyo troubled ang personal life nyan. The desire to make a decent living to support his family could be the reason why he felt the need to forego college ball in favor of the amateurs.

Those people who pulled the strings of Mike Burtscher's basketball odyssey has blood on their hands. They played gods to this young man. They made promises they can't deliver. They deprived Mike of an invaluable experience playing college ball and not only that but a legitimate college education as well. They did all this for Mike's welfare? Very noble but alot of us will never buy that.

We all know the level of competition in the PBL that veterans from both the UAAP and NCAA needed time to adjust. Collegiate basketball competition is where talents hone their skills and nurture their maturity into the game. It is an essential stepping stone for anyone who wants to make it big in the big leagues here. I hope Mike will blossom into the player he always wanted to be. However, let us all be realistic, given Mike's talents he is still no Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady and even Andrew Bynum - even on a Philippine context mahihirapan pa rin siya.* It will be tough for him to make that skip or jump. But still, good luck Mike and please prove me wrong.

^ Hi Mon...

Thanks for the tip! I visited the other threads on Mike B already. Grabe pala talaga ang issue sa kanya.

Anyway I guess we all have to wait and see how the guy fares in the PBL. He already signed a contract with Cebuana which means he can't see action in any college league anymore. In fairness napapansin ko that he's one of Luigi's favorites sa lineup kaya mabibigyan din siguro ng playing time yan in the coming months. It will all just depend on the kid if he is able to blossom under Luigi's tutelage and absorb what he can from the talents of his teammates..

finally Ron Mattias goes mainstream as he is signed up by the sista super sealers. i believe this is the first time he sets foot in a league as prestigious as the PBL and no doubt with a talent like him he desreves to be here. he has for the longest time schooled more glamorous players in little known leagues around the city and it is about time others would get to know what Mattias is all about. :)

I agree with joelex. I hope Ronnie Matias does well in the PBL, the young guy has babies (take note, plural) to support and could use the income.

Speaking of babies and mouths to feed I finally got to speak to the controversial Mike B of Cebuana Lhuillier (formerly of San Beda and almost DLSU) face to face a couple of days ago. I mentioned vaguely that his name was very controversial here on the internet and then asked him who his agent was, because from what I picked up here, a lot of our posters believe that his handler/s have made the wrong decision by making him forego college ball for the PBL.

Turns out the kid doesn't have any people taking care of him or giving him advice. According to Mike he went to La Salle from San Beda on his own and then tried out and signed with Cebuana on his own as well. His reason? He will be a dad late this year and needs the money. The allowance he would receive from any school would barely be enough for his own needs, what more the needs of a pregnant partner and soon, an infant boy or girl?

On one hand it made me admire his gutsy move. He's taking responsibility for his actions and found a way to make a living for his family.

On the other hand I have to wish him good luck. He will have a lot to prove in the PBL and with so many talented players it won't be easy to maintain a slot not just in the Cebuana lineup but any team for that matter.

Cager in UAAP scandal in PBL

By WAYLON GALVEZ
www.mb.com.ph

Mark Benitez, one of two La Salle players involved in the biggest scandal that rocked collegiate basketball, has made a quiet return to basketball after staying away from public view for nearly two years.

The six-foot-five Benitez debuted for San Miguel Beer-Magnolia in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) last Tuesday, failing to score a basket in six minutes of action.

Benitez is clearly out of shape after years of inactivity, but Magnolia coach Koy Banal expects him to improve as the tournament wears on.

"The coaches are doing a good job in helping him to focus on the present and forget the past," said Banal.

Benitez played three seasons for the Green Archers and was part of the team that won the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) championship in 2004.

In 2005, however, Benitez and former teammate Tim Gatchalian were found to have submitted a falsified Philippine Educational Placement Test Certificate of Rating (PEPTCR) to get into La Salle.

The PEPTCR is equivalent to a high school diploma, which allows student to enroll to any universities and colleges.

No punitive action has been taken against Benitez and Gatchalian who have staunchly claimed innocence.

But La Salle, which has firmly denied any responsibility, was meted a one-year suspension from all UAAP sports.

Benitez, now 22 years old, does not want to dwell on the issue, saying he has already learned to accept his fate.

"I’m happy that I was given another chance to play again," Benitez told the Bulletin. "I’m okay now after what happened to me (in La Salle). I told myself that if I always think about it, nothing will happen to me. So I have to move on with my life."

Benitez and wife Margarett have a three-year-old daughter Xyza Alexa.

Apart from supporting his family, Benitez wants to return to school.

"I still want to finish high school and college," said Benitez. "Family and studies are really my priorities."

He is expected to enroll at the Lamar Academy in Angono, Rizal in June.

Christian Luanzon was lined up for the Alaska Aces for one conference in the 2007 season if I recall. He probably saw 10 total minutes of playing time during that conference.

Bottomline: up to now he has not decided whether he is a guard or a forward, and this has affected his establishment of a playing identity. He has what some coaches refer to as "bastard size", not really big enough to be a PBA forward, not quite athletic enough to be a PBA guard. Frankly I truly believe he has enough game to thrive as a fulltime PBA swingman, splitting time at the 3 and 2 and also seeing point forward duty, his handles, his trigger and his range are adequate, not superb but adequate. At 6'3" or 6'4" and the ability to slide in and out of defenses he could be a taller Junthy Valenzuela. The only question is: how bad does he really want it?

Zach Estoesta was on the 2003 UAAP lineup of Ateneo, the same lineup that included then-rookies Chris Tiu, Ford Arao and Martin Quimson. Zach was already in Ateneo in 2002 but was bumped off what became the UAAP championship team by an act of coaching nepotism - the great Dom Banal was placed on the lineup ahead of him. He then suffered a knee injury that never fully healed to 100% and he spent the rest of his college basketball career on Team Glory B.

Christian played for coach Aric's Pampanga buddies after playing in the PBL for a team that has some ex-Tigers (just cant recall which team). He won some but also lost a few. He's very good when he is in his elements but can drag a team down with his bad game. Reason is he needs to have the ball in his hands to be effective. At first glance he seem fit for Alaska's triangle offense because of his size and skills (premium on passing and outside shooting). However, until he learns to play off the ball he won't be able to integrate his game with Alaska. He could be effective as the 2 in the 2-man game with his ability to deliver god entry passes or take the shot (jumper or take it to the hole) but he doesn't have enough in his resume to warrant a ball-hogging game. He needs to change his game. But, as Joe said, how bad does he really want it?

Si Labagala ay pumalit kay Barroca. I don't know who replaced Cervantes. As far as I know, he's still in Oracle's lineup.
