ALL SET FOR MVBA SECOND CONFERENCE

* * *AFTER THE successful staging of the ML Kwarta Padala First Conference earlier this year, the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) gets set to launch a fitting follow up with its Second Conference this September.* A very busy off-season awaits the MVBA and its teams.

* * *As part of the preparations, the MVBA will hold a Coaching Seminar from July 21 to 23, 2006 at the University of San Carlos.* The seminar is exclusive to all MVBA head coaches and their assistants and will feature a battery of current and former PBA and National Team coaches as lecturers on a wide array of topics led by Coaches Alfrancis Chua, Eric Altamirano and Ed Cordero.

* * *“We are doing this seminar in order to raise the level of coaching in the MVBA by bringing the top Filipino coaches to Cebu to share their knowledge,” said MVBA founder Councilor Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba.* “I’m sure our coaches will learn a lot during this three-day seminar”.

* * *Meanwhile, the league will also conduct the MVBA Invitational Tournament this August 21 to 26 at the New Cebu City Coliseum featuring MVBA squads versus their Metro Manila counterparts.* MVBA teams led by First Conference Champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu of Michel Lhuillier and runner-up PacMan-GenSan of global boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao are set to match skills with the TeleTech Titans of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and possibly another PBL team to be named later.

* * *The Titans through head coach Jerry Codinera recently confirmed their participation to MVBA Mindanao Commissioner Willy Generalao.* Both Codinera and Generalao were Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) teammates at the Purefoods Hotdogs during the team’s maiden year in 1988.

* * *Also set to hold the fort for the MVBA are Montana Pawnshop-Davao of Armando Quibod and Cebu Landmaster-Toledo of Joe Soberano.* Both teams are already heavily gearing up to improve on their First Conference performance.

* * *Aside from the Cebu joust, the MVBA and its teams have also received invitations to play in separate one-week tournaments in line with the foundation days of the cities of Davao and Digos in the second and third weeks of August.

MVBA pre-season opens today
sunstar.com.ph

After a frustrating third place finish during the Mayor Rodrigo Duterte Battle of Champions last week, the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City team will defend its turf against the visiting teams as the MVBA Pre-Conference Invitational Tournament starts today at the Cebu Coliseum.

Following brief opening rites, with vice-mayor Mike Rama as the guest speaker, hostilities will start with the Jewelers playing the reinforced North Cotabato Braves at 4:30 p.m.

The main game at 6 p.m. will feature PacMan-Gen. San. against the TeleTech Titans.

The Jewelers are on a mission following its frustrating finish in Davao City, but it would be a different Braves they would face tonight as the North Cotabato team now has ex-PBA player Ulysses Tanigue to orchestrate the play, while John Paul Pacheco is now calling the shots for the Gov. Manny Piñol-owned team.

New recruits

The Jewelers, meanwhile, will seek to make the best out of its new recruits–PBL mainstays Ardy Larong, Ryan Dy, Jett Latonio and Reed Friar Juntilla, together with former University of Cebu Webmaster Orvielle Saludsod.

However, coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba will still bank on the dreaded combination of guards Woodrow Enriquez, Mike Manigo and Stephen Padilla to pull them.

MLKP’s tormentor during the semifinal round of the Davao tournament, Digos-Montaña, has pulled out of the competition along with Ozamiz Cotta, leaving only four squads playing a single round robin tournament. The top two teams will play for the title on Aug. 25.(RCM)

MVBA pre-season games fire off today at Coliseum

Smarting from a failed title bid in Davao recently, the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Jewelers hope to re-ignite the fire that vaulted them to several championships as they host the North Cotabato Braves in today's opener of the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference pre-season games.

The Jewelers of businessman-sportsman Michel Lhuillier will tackle the Braves of Governor Manny Piñol at 4:30 pm, right before Philippine Basketball League (PBL) newcomer TeleTech Titans clash with Gensan Pacman of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao in the main game at 6 pm.

The five-day cagefest will be played at the Cebu Coliseum.

Supposedly, a total of six teams are set to see action in the tournament, but Digos Montaña Pawnshop and Ozamiz Cotta begged off due to undisclosed reasons.

M. Lhuillier, the inaugural MVBA champion, parades a rejuvenated lineup, but it looks like the Jewelers are still in the process of jelling with other other due to the arrival of some recruits.

Once the newcomers have already adjusted to their system, this is for sure a bad news to their rivals as the Jewelers, on paper, boasts of a formidable lineup composed of a deadly four-man guard rotation of Stephen Padilla, Mike Manigo, Woodrow Enriquez and Reed Friar Juntilla.

Adding firepower to their hardcourt weaponry are the likes of Jet Latonio, Ardy Larong, Alano Caputolan, Aldrin Ocañada, Marlon Piodo, Orville Saludsod and Danny Aying.

Later in the day, the TeleTech Giants of coach Jerry Codiñera face a daunting task against MVBA losing finalist Gensan Pacman, a running team powered a prolific outside gunners.

Cebuano fans, however, may root for TeleTech as four "Bisaya" cagers are suiting up for the Titans namely Ronnie Bughao (Cebu), Dominador Javier (Antique) and Jose Magdadaro (Sta. Fe, Bantayan Island), and Jovanie Aguilar (Dumaguete City).

The rest who will carry the fight of TeleTech are Jay-Arr Estrada, Francis Mercado, Rey Mendoza, Ariel Capus, Axel Doruelo, Mike Dizon, Don Villamin and Melchor Latoreno. Before the hardcourt hostilities, a simple opening ceremonies will take place to be graced by Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael L. Rama and MVBA founder and decorated M. Lhuillier coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba.

The tournament, held as a runup to the MVBA Second Conference set to kick off next month, will follow a single round robin format with the top two teams setting up a championship showdown in a winner-take-all affair on Saturday.

Hits killer triple as M. Lhuillier survives TeleTech to reach final
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel
The Freeman 08/24/2006

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu once again suffered offensive meltdown towards the end of the game but sweet-shooting forward Jet Latonio came to the rescue by hitting a crucial triple that buffered the Jewelers to a 74-71 thriller over the gritty TeleTech Titans last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

With a clean 2-0 slate, the Jewelers of businessman/sportsman Michel Lhuillier and head coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba are already assured of a championship ticket in the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Pre-Season games.

Latonio duplicated his heroics in their 79-74 conquest of the North Cotabato Braves the other day by dishing out 11 points capped with a booming triple off the glass that broke a 69-all deadlock and gave the Jewelers a 72-69 breather with 1:21 left in the game.

Cebuano guard Ronnie Bughao hit two free throws off Latonio's foul to pull TeleTech of coach Jerry Codiñera within 71-72, but Ardy Larong and Michael Manigo went 2-of-4 from the foul line in the final 35 seconds to seal M. Lhuillier's victory.

TeleTech had a chance to forge an overtime, but Axel Doruelo's 3-point attempt just bounced off the time as the final buzzer honked.

Long-range bomber drilled in four triples to topscore for M. Lhuillier with 14 points. Aldrin Ocañada and Woodrow Enriquez each had 12 markers followed by Manigo with 11.

Despite the loss, the TeleTech Titans deserved a hearty pat on their backs for playing their hearts out under heavy pressure. They trailed by as much as 14 points late in the third canto, 37-41, but courageously fought back to give the Jewelers some scary moments.

Bughao topped TeleTech with 16 points, while Doruelo and Jay-R Estrada chipped in 13 and 12 markers, respectively.

Earlier, Bogat Raymundo had 17 points to power the North Cotabato Braves to a 78-73 victory over Gensan Pacman.

North Cotabato faces Tele-Tech at 4:30 pm today with the winning earning the right to challenge M. Lhuillier in the sudden-death final tomorrow.

The team which will finish third after the elimination round will be automatically declared as the third placer, but is set to battle Sta. Lucia Realty of the PBA in an exhibition match prior to the championship battle this Friday.

On Saturday, it will be M. Lhuillier's turn to challenge the Realtors of coach Alfrancis Chua in another goodwill encounter.

Sta. Lucia's Cebu joust is a rare opportunity for the Cebuano hoop fans as they will be the first to witness the hardcourt talent of the Realtors' prized recruit in Fil-Am Kelly Williams, the No.1 overall pick in this year's PBA Draft.

CEBU CITY — M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City survived the challenge of the North Cotabato Braves, 85-76, to claim the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Invitational Tournament title last Friday at the New Cebu City Coliseum.

M. Lhuillier had the game well in hand and led by as much as 20 points, 69-49, late in the third quarter.

But the Braves exploded a 21-5 bomb in the fourth period to come to within 70-74, three minutes to go.

But as the sellout crowd braced themselves for a neck-and-neck finish, Woodrowe Wilson rose to the occasion and powered the Cebuanos to the win.

Wilson, the MVBA First Conference Finals MVP, bucked a foot injury to score seven of M. Lhuillier’s final 11 points while helping out on defense that limited the Braves to just six points in the windup.

"This win proves that teams from the provinces can compete with their Manila counterparts," winning coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba said.

Aside from the Braves, the tournament also featured the MP Warriors-GenSan of Manny Pacquiao and Manila’s TeleTech Titans, making it one of the toughest tournaments in recent Cebu hoops history.

Misor-Pacman rematch Saturday night at Digos gym
sunstar.com.ph

TALISAY CITY -- The MLSDF-Talisay Aquastars make their debut on October 21, the second playing day of Visayas Division hostilities in the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference, as they host First Conference champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City at the Talisay City gym starting at 5:30 pm.

The Aquastars of Coach Eddie Ybanez will be basically built around the core of the former Mantawi Traders plus several tested veterans. Former MisOr stalwarts James Laygo and Jessie Lumantas will reunite with Coach Ybanez, their college mentor at Southwestern University in the late '90s. They will join holdovers 6`8" Rino Berame and Morsie Akad of perennial CESAFI champion University of the Visayas Lancers and Leode Garcia.

The Jewelers of Coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba have retained their championship roster, adding only University of San Carlos guard Arletroy Mercader to take the place of center Ariel Mepana who sustained a serious knee injury during the championship series. Otherwise, it will be the same cast of reliable players led by Finals MVP Woodrow Enriquez, Mike Manigo, Stephen Padilla, Visayas MVP Jayford Rodriguez and 2006 CESAFI MVP Enrico Llanto.

As always, any showdown involving both grizzled coaches is a surefire showcase game characteristic of the league backed by ML Kwarta Padala, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Nature's Spring Drinking Water, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

Over in the Mindanao Division, Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr of MVBA Chairman Governor Oscar S. Moreno stakes its unblemished 3-0 win-loss record as they travel to the Digos City Gym to face the MP Warriors-GenSan of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

MisOr and Coach Rex Salvana will have to draw another good game from team leaders Gilbert Demape, Mark Apepe and Dondon Mendoza.

The MP Warriors hope to clinch the victory and move closer to MisOr for leadership in the Mindanao Division. Coach Ramon Pido has in his arsenal Mindanao MVP Louie Medalla, Donald Tadena, Apol Coronado and Jeffy Locsin.

M. Lhuillier was playing Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi of Joe Soberano at the Mandaue City Sports Center and MP was battling the Iligan Archangels of Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz at the Almendras Gym in Davao City in a pair of games unfinished as of Thursday.

Mantawi humbles M. Lhuillier in MVBA
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel
The Freeman 10/21/2006

Who says the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City Jewelers are invincible?

The Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi don't think so.

The Landmasters of realtor Joe Soberano wasted away a 22-point lead early in the fourth period but hung on tough towards the end to stun inaugural champion M. Lhuillier, 82-79, in the Visayas Division of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference the other night at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Former pro standout Dale Singson blew the victory trumpet in his MVBA debut, but it was Carlos Sayon who stole the show with a game-high 21 points capped by a pair of free throws off a Jayford Rodriguez foul that sealed Mantawi's win with 4.7 seconds left in the game.

In the middle quarters, the Jewelers couldn't get their game going. They fired bricks, committed a stack of turnovers and were simply outrebounded and outhustled by their more aggressive foes.

When the Jewelers were at a loss offensively and defensively, Mantawi capitalized on the opportunity to mount an imposing 69-47 lead with just a minute gone by in the final canto. It was the largest deficit ever sustained by the Jewelers in recent years.

On the brink of an embarrassing setback, Rodriguez and top playmaker Woodrow Enriquez presided over M. Lhuillier's gallant fightback at the endgame.

Rodriguez drilled in 13 points, while Enriquez had seven in a blistering 26-7 spurt that gave the Jewelers a new lease on life with only a three-point shortfall, 73-76, with 1:14 remaining in the contest.

In the ensuing play, Singson earned a trip to the 4.5-meter line courtesy of an ill-advised foul by Rodriguez. He then calmly sank his charities for a 79-73 Mantawi edge with 35 ticks to go before the final buzzer.

Still, the Jewelers threatened at 76-79 on three straight free throws by Enriquez, but their hopes of completing the great escape vanished in thin air as the hulking 6-foot-7 center Joel Solis, Bernie Ursal and Sayon went 4-of-6 from the foul line in the final 11 seconds to bail Mantawi out of danger.

Solis, whose towering presence at Mantawi's frontcourt dwarfed M. Lhuillier's big men, added 11 points, while Abe Galinato, Bernie Ursal and Alex Cainglet connived for 27 markers for the Cebu Landmaster-backed squad.

Mantawi, who was handled by assistant coach Jojo Romarate as chief bench tactician Jun Tan was still in Manila attending a very important matter, got off to a rousing 8-2 start.

The best thing the M. Lhuillier could do was to tie the count at 14-all as the Landmasters befuddled the Jewelers from that point on to zoom to a 62-45 advantage after three quarters.

M. Lhuillier of businessman/sportsman Michel Lhuillier and head coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba did manage to wake up from deep offensive slumber but it was too late for them as time wasn't on their side.

Enriquez topped M. Lhuillier with 20 points followed by Rodriguez with 16. The only other double-digit scorer for the Jewelers was Stephen Padilla with 12. The missing link were Enrico Llanto, Aldrin Ocañada, Niño Ramirez and Danny Aying who were held off to a measly 11 points combined.

The Jewelers hope to bounce back from their loss when they battle the MLSDF-Talisay City Aquastars of coach Eddie Ybañez at 6:30 pm this Tuesday at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

Over at the Almendras Gym in Davao City, the MP Warriors-GenSan survived a double overtime thriller against the Iligan Archangels, 105-103, to close out the first half of the Mindanao Division classification round.

With the scored tied at 103-103, Warrior Jeffy Locsin intercepted a pass meant for Jeffrey France and rushed down the court for the game-winning lay-up with four seconds to go. Out of timeouts, the Archangels immediately threw up a prayer of a shot that went nowhere. Locsin had earlier deadlocked the score via two free throws off Sammy Ayodele four at the last 25-second mark.

Enriquez makes Jewelers glow Steers M. Lhuillier past Talisay City Aquastars in MVBA Second Conference
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel
The Freeman 10/26/2006

M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City star guard Woodrow Enriquez was whistled for three successive fouls in the first five minutes of the final quarter.

Surprisingly, Enriquez wasn't taken out of the floor for reasons only M. Lhuillier coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba knows best.

When the dust settled, everyone discerned the rationale behind Alcoseba's ploy.

Enriquez scored seven of M. Lhuillier's last 11 points to power the Jewelers to a 62-56 conquest of the Talisay City Aquastars in a classic contest of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference the other night at the jampacked Talisay City Sports Complex.

After Enrico John Llano broke a 51-all deadlock, Enriquez sank two free throws and then completed a 3-point play off a Rino Berame foul to give the Jewelers a 58-53 breather with 1:49 left in the contest.

The Aquastars had several chances to close in, but Leo Bat-og missed two free throws and later Ken Abatayo committed a passing error.

Fortunately for Talisay, the Jewelers couldn't make one good offensive move in that instance, allowing the Aquastars to threaten for one last time at 56-58 with 21 ticks left before the final buzzer.

Enriquez, however, completed his endgame heroics by drilling in pressure-packed charities before Mike Manigo converted a layup to peg the final count.

With Bruce Dacia, Leo Bat-og and Jessie Lumantas around to compliment 6-foot-7 skyscraper Rino Berame and high-leaping forward Morsie Akad, the Talisay Aquastars of head coach and MLSDF executive director Eddie Ybañez looked formidable.

But M. Lhuillier caught the Aquarstars by surprise as the Jewelers sprinted to a 17-point advantage, 30-13, early in the second period.

Behind he efforts of Dacia, Bat-og, Akad and Kim Calo, the Aquastars forged a see-saw battle to the delight of the raucous, but very appreciative Talisaynon spectators that filled the sports complex to the hilt.

The Aquastars could have even grabbed the lead, but Dacia made only one free throw to even the count at 47-all at the final 7:24 mark of the contest.

The last time the Aquastars tied the count was at 51-all as the diminutive, but courageous playmaker Enriquez took matters into his own hands to prevent M. Lhuillier from suffering what could have been its first ever back-to-back defeats.

The Jewelers lost to the Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi, 79-83, in the Visayas Division opener last October 19 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Enriquez topped M. Lhuillier with 16 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Stephen Padilla and Manigo chipped in with 21 points combined. Llanto scored only eight, but held his ground against the taller Talisay frontcourt to collect a game-high 14 rebounds on top of three blocks.

Dacia finished with 13 points followed by Bat-og with 11 for the Aquastars, who hope to bounce back from their setback when they collide with Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi of realtor Joe Soberano in today's lone match at 6:30 pm in Mandaue City.

Over at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City, Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr roared to its fifth consecutive win in as many games by repeating over the Iligan Archangels, 77-68.

MisOr had a poor 1-12 start until Gilbert Demape scattered 16 points spanning the first and second periods to seize control of the game by halftime, 39-37.

A triple by Bob Cozy Ilanga broke the final tie of the game, 44-41, and it was an all-MisOr show from there as the team of MVBA Chairman Gov.Oscar S. Moreno and coach Rex Salvana registered their biggest lead of the game early in the final canto, 73-55.

Demape finished with a game-high 24 points followed by Ilanga with 18.

Jeffrey France paced the now 1-3 Archangels of Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz and Coach Ed Arugay with 21 while Dino Cabili and Sammy Ayodelle added 17 and 13, respectively.

M. Lhuillier eyes revenge versus Mantawi in MVBA
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel
The Freeman 10/27/2006

Revenge is on top of M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala's agenda when the Jewelers battle Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi in grudge rematch tonight in the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference at the Cebu Coliseum.

Gametime is set at 6:30 pm.

The Jewelers of businessman/sportsman Michel Lhuillier are aching to lash back at the Landmasters of realtor Joe Soberano, who dealt them with a 79-83 beating during the Visayas Division opener last October 19 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Former pro standout Dale Singson was instrumental for the Cebu Landmaster's upset of the undisputed king of Cebu commercial hoopdom.

However, things will be entirely different for Cebu Landmaster without Singson, who yesterday signed a one-year, P1.5M million contract with the Alaska Aces in the PBA.

"Singson is truly a big loss for us because we really need his leadership to guide this team," said Cebu Landmaster chief bench tactician Leoncio "Jun" Tan, Jr.

"But we have to move on. I don't want my players to lose confidence in themselves and think that we have no fighting chance anymore just because Singson is no longer with us. I emphasized to them that basketball is a team game. That's why I encouraged my other pointguards to step up. This is a big break for them to show what they've got," Tan added.

Following the exit of Singson, Tan still looks forward with optimism as he acquired the services of explosive center Joseph Ronald "Baby Shaq" Quiñahan, a product of six-time CESAFI champion UV Green Lancers who previously played for Granny Goose Tortillos in the PBL.

"Quiñahan is an added boost not only to our offense but defense as well. I hope he can adjust well to our system," said Tan, whose Cebu Landmaster is still playing against the Talisay City Aquastars as of this writing last night in Mandaue.

Quiñahan is a solid addition to the Cebu Landmaster's frontcourt that is beefed up by 6-foot-7 strongman Joel Solis.

Tan will also bank on his other reliables in the likes of Alex Cainglet, Bernie Ursal, Ian Saladaga, Rex Mangubat, Carlos Sayon, Abe Galinato and Raul Redulosa.

On the other hand, the Jewelers of head coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba gained the needed morale-booster heading into their return bout with Cebu Landmaster after they drained the Talisay City Aquastars, 56-62, on Tuesday night at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

Cat-quick playmaker Woodrow Enriquez is again expected to be at the cornerstone of M. Lhuillier's offense together with Stephen Padilla, Mike Manigo and Jayford Rodriguez.

When their offensive guns misfire, expect Enrico Llanto, Niño Ramirez, Aldrin Ocañada, Alano Caputolan, Danny Aying and Marlon Piodo to take charge of M. Lhuillier's scoring chores.

Meanwhile, a new coach and a new nickname is what the Lanao del Norte Barracudas will bring when they take on the undefeated Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr also at 6:30 pm today at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.

Still winless in three starts, the newly christened Barracudas of Gov. Imelda Q. Dimaporo announced that they have replaced head coach Chris Pontillas with his assistant Angelito Quidlat.

Brothers Baltazar and Arlo Jueves have been doing their best in carrying the fight for the Barracudas with similar averages of 11.3 points per game.

However, the rest of their teammates have to contribute if they are to tally their breakthrough win in the tournament made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring Drinking Water, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

MisOr of MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno has simply been on a roll going unscathed in five outings. Coach Rex Salvana gives credit to the sterling play of starting guards Gilbert Demape (14.8ppg) and Bob Cozy Ilanga (16.3ppg) for their current success

LANAO UPSETS MISOR, 65-62

* * *CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – A late name change worked wonders as the rechristened Lanao Royals dealt Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr their first loss, 65-62, at Xavier University Gym Friday (October 27) at the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference.

* * *Team owner Gov. Imelda Q. Dimaporo sent a text message to the team a couple of hours before tip off informing them of her new choice of nickname.* The move worked wonders as the Royals lived up to their name and engaged the MisOr squad of MVBA Chairman Gov. * * *Robert Valconcha sizzled for nine points in the fourth quarter, including a crucial basket that pegged the count at 64-59 with 1:47 to play.* Gilbert Demape then countered with a triple at the 1:16 mark to threaten for the last time, 62-64.

A LATE name change worked wonders as the re-christened Lanao Royals dealt Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr their first loss, 65-62 at Xavier University Gym Friday at the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference.

Team owner Governor Imelda Q. Dimaporo sent a text message to the team a couple of hours before tip off informing them of her new choice of nickname.

The move worked wonders as the Royals lived up to their name and engaged the MisOr squad of MVBA Chairman Governor Oscar S. Moreno in a tight contest, a far cry from their 56-79 blowout loss to MisOr last October 13 at the Mindanao Civic Center.

Robert Valconcha sizzled for nine points in the fourth quarter, including a crucial basket that pegged the count at 64-59 with 1:47 to play.

Gilbert Demape then countered with a triple at the 1:16 mark to threaten for the last time, 62-64.

The Royals encountered anxious moments as Baltazar Jueves bungled two free throws and Demape collared the defensive rebound.

In the ensuing play, Maui Huelar missed an easy lay-up that could have tied the game.

Huelar quickly fouled Benjamin Clavite, who split his free throws for the final tally.

Huelar had one final chance to redeem himself but his triple attempt with four seconds to go bounced off the rim and Jueves grabbing the rebound at the buzzer to seal the win and leaving the partisan crowd stunned.

It was also a fitting debut for new head coach Angelito Quidlat as Kent Joemar Senining led the Royals to their first win in franchise history with 15 points.

Valconcha finished with 13. Bob Cozy Ilanga topped MisOr with 15 followed by Demape with 11.

Over at the New Cebu City Coliseum, First Conference champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu exacted revenge over Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi, 83-75, for their second straight win and the top spot in the Visayas Division.

Mantawi won their first encounter last October 19 in Mandaue City, 83-79, the opening day of Visayas Division action in the league sponsored by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring Drinking Water, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

M. Lhuillier led all the way, except for a brief moment early in the game that saw Mantawi deadlock the count at 6-6.

From there, Woodrow Enriquez, Stephen Padilla and Enrico Llanto took turns at punishing the Landmaster quintet of Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan.

The best Mantawi could do was close in by seven points, 71-78, on a basket by Luther Luke Justiniani late in the fourth period.

Enriquez paced M. Lhuillier with 19 points while Padilla knocked in 15.

Carlos Sayon and JR Quinahan were the lone twin digit scorers for Mantawi with 19 and 10 apiece.

The Royals shoot for their second straight win October 29 when they host the Iligan Archangels of Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz at the Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod starting at 6 pm.

Both teams are now tied with similar 1-3 win-loss records.

Aquastars put brake on Turbos
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel
The Freeman 11/06/2006

The Talisay City Aquastars staged a daring breakaway in the third quarter to destroy the visiting Toyota-Iloilo Turbos, 80-65, in the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference the other night at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

With Bruce Dacia, Leo Bat-og and Rino Berami going ice-cold, Morsie Akad, Chris Carretas, Kim Calo and Jessie Lumantas provided the offensive spark when it mattered most for the Aquastars of head coach and MLSDF executive director Eddie Ybañez.

Akad topscored for the Aquastars with 15 points, even as three others cashed in double figures underscoring Talisay's balanced attack.

Calo chipped in 13 markers, while Carretas and Lumantas combined for 21 points for the Aquastars, who assumed the temporary second spot in the Visayas Division with an even 2-2 win-loss record.

It was a close battle early on resulting into four deadlocks and five lead changes in the opening period. The Turbos stayed within striking range, 21-23, but Akad hit a triple to spark an 11-3 run, giving the Aquastars a twin-digit edge for the first time, 34-24, with 5:40 left in the second period.

The gritty Turbos rallied back to pull within a hairline at halftime, 45-46. They even grabbed the lead, 47-46, on a basket by Nicolas Billones to open up the final half.

But just when the prospect of pulling an upset looked brighter for them, disaster struck the Ilongo visitors like lightning, immediately causing a major trouble on the Turbos' offensive engine.

At the point when the Turbos' conked out on both ends of the court, Carretas, Calo and Lumantas conjured all the strength they could muster to spearhead a 19-4 outburst that handed the Aquastars a commanding 16-point bulge, 65-49, with two minutes remaining before the final canto.

The Aquastars had their biggest advantage of 19 points at 80-61 on back-to-back baskets by Akad in the final 1:36 mark of the contest.

Ruel Balgos led the Iloilo Turbos with a game-high 24 points followed by Henry Sencil and Elben Leonida with 10 apiece. The missing link was Eldrin Senierez, who was held off to only five points.

As of this writing last night, the Turbos were still playing against Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi of realtor Joe Soberano and coach Jun Tan at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex. Toyota-Iloilo will wind up its Metro Cebu swing tomorrow when it battles M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu at the Cebu Coliseum.

Iligan duels Pacman
sunstar.com.ph

NO LESS than the second place in the Mindanao Division of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) second conference is at stake today as the Iligan Archangels hosts the MP Warriors-GenSan at the MSU-IIT gym.

The 3-2 Warriors of boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and coach Ramon Pido enjoy a one-game lead over the 2-3 Archangels of Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz and Coach Ed Arugay in the standings of the league backed by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

Being the final intra-division game for both teams, a win is a must before they face the Visayan Division teams in the next round.

In their first meeting last October 19 at the Almendras Gym in Davao City, both teams battled through two overtimes before the Warriors prevailed, 105-103.

Both squads come from victories over the Lanao Royals of Gov. Imelda Q. Dimaporo and Coach Angelito Quidlat.

The Archangels won last October 29 at the Mindanao Civic Center, 73-66, while the Warriors prevailed last November 5 at the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center, 91-50.

Expected to fill stellar roles for the Archangels in today's game are MVBA scoring leader Dino Cabili (17.6 PPG), Marvin Tundag (15.7 PPG), Jeffrey France (14.2 PPG) and Sammy Ayodelle (11.2 PPG).

Meanwhile, performing consistently for the Warriors are Apol Coronado (14.2 PPG) and Donald Tadena (10.2 PPG).

A shootout will surely ensue with the Warriors (84.0 PPG) and Archangels (81.2 PPG) boasting of being the two most offensive-minded MVBA teams.

Visayas Division contenders M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu (3-1) of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba was still locked in combat with the Toyota-Iloilo Turbos (0-2) of Robert Uy and Coach Jerry Jaranilla and press time last night at the New Cebu City Coliseum.

* * *Suddenly, MisOr went on an 11-2 run to close the first half on top, 34-25.* MisOr was coasting to the win when Buhat banged in a triple and Arlo Jueves added a three-point play to begin the final quarter and threaten for the last time, 49-51.

* * *Dondon Mendoza and Jesson Alfeche then sank key baskets to keep the Royals at bay, including a drive by Alfeche that gave MisOr a 12-point lead entering the final two minutes, 68-56.* Both teams settled the tally with free throws.

* * *Demape powered MisOr with 21 points followed by Mendoza with 13.* Buhat paced the Royals with 15 on four treys while Arlo chipped in 13.* MisOr will now wait for the winner of the series between the MP Warriors-GenSan of Manny Pacquiao and the Iligan Archangels of Mayor Lawrence L. GENSAN COMPLETES FINAL FOUR

* * *ILIGAN CITY – This time the MP Warriors-GenSan made sure the outcome of the contest would be decided early as they erased the Iligan Archangels from the playoffs of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference last Wednesday, 88-65, and advance to the Mindanao Division Finals for the second time in as many conferences.

* * *The Warriors of boxing idol Manny Pacquiao and Coach Ramon Pido started slow by allowing the Archangels of Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz and Coach Ed Arugay to race to a 24-13 lead.* Suddenly, the Warriors unloaded 16 unanswered points spanning the first and second quarters for a 29-24 tally and the Archangels never recovered.* The Warriors went on to take the half, 48-36.

* * *So dominating were the Warriors that the Archangels never came closer than 10 points from thereon, stretching their margin to as much as 27 markers, 86-59, late in the contest.* This was a far cry from their two previous encounters that were decided only in the waning seconds both in the Warriors’ favor.

* * *Up next for the Warriors in the best-of-three Mindanao Finals are the top seeded Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr of MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Rex Salvana.* MisOr eliminated the Lanao Royals of Gov. Imelda Q. Dimaporo and Coach Angelito Quidlat last Tuesday, 72-61, at the Mindanao Civic Center.

* * *Jeffy Locsin led the Warriors with 14 followed by Louie Medalla with 13.* Aries Gloria paced the Archangels with 16 while Francis Sanz added 14.

* * *Meanwhile, First Conference champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Jewelers begins its quest for back-to-back titles as they host Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi tomorrow at the New Cebu City Coliseum in Game One of the Visayas Division Finals.

* * *Landmaster of Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan are coming off an inspiring 115-108 conquest of the Talisay Aquastars of Coach Eddie Ybanez last Tuesday at the Talisay City Sports Complex to earn the right to face the Jewelers of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba.

* * *Spitfire Egay Billones tallied an all-time league record of 41 points and he is expected to lead his team anew in partnership with Alex Cainglet (13.7 PPG) and Carlos Sayon (11.5 PPG).* Fans are expected to savor the brewing shootout between Billones (22.4 PPG) and M. Lhuillier’s resident gunner Stephen Padilla (14.3 PPG).* Padilla is not alone as Coach Alcoseba can always draw good plays from Woodrow Enriquez (9.4 PPG), Mike Manigo (9.7 PPG) and Jayford Rodriguez (9.4 PPG).

* * *The Visayas and Mindanao Champions will square off in a best-of-three affair for the MVBA Championship later this month, made possible with the help of ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Drinking Water, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

MANTAWI TAKES VISAYAS GAME ONE

* * *CEBU CITY – Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi rallied from 17 points down in the third period to edge out M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu, 84-82, and take Game One of the best-of-three Visayas Division Finals of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference at the New Cebu City Coliseum.

* * *Egay Billones was all over the court, hitting a crucial triple with 1:26 to play that gave Landmaster an 84-80 edge.* M. Lhuillier’s Enrico Llanto then answered with a quick basket to threaten, 82-84.* After both sides failed in their next offensives, Mike Manigo stole the ball with 15 ticks on the clock, feeding an open Stephen Padilla.* Sadly, the M. Lhuillier hotshot’s attempt missed at the buzzer, triggering a celebration by the Landmaster squad of Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan.

* * *M. Lhuillier was on top by 17 at the 7:46 mark of the third canto, 59-42, but Billones, Bernie Ursal and Luther Luke Justiniani conspired in a 27-9 run bridging the third and fourth quarters that gave Landmaster the lead for the first time, 69-68, and 7:45 left in the game.* It was a seesaw battle from there, with the score being deadlocked for the last time at 79-79 entering the last two minutes when Ursal scrambled for a loose ball to break the time and put Landmaster on top for good, 81-79.

* * *Billones led Landmaster with 22 points followed by center Rex Mangubat with 16.* Padilla finished with 25 points, 13 coming in the opening quarter that saw M. Lhuillier take a 22-16 advantage.* Llanto chipped in 13.* Landmaster leads the series, 1-0, the opening game of the playoffs made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Nature’s Spring Drinking Water, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

* * *Landmaster can wrap up the series and a spot in the MVBA Finals tonight at the Lapu-Lapu City Gym.* However, M. Lhuillier is no stranger to situations like this.* Landmaster shocked the then undefeated M. Lhuillier at the Cebu Coliseum in Game One of the First Conference’s Visayas Division Finals, with the Jewelers of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba regrouping to take the next two contests in Balamban, Cebu and the Cebu Coliseum en route to the historic first MVBA championship last June.

MISOR RESERVES KEY GAME ONE VICTORY

* * *CAGAYAN DE ORO – Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr scored a resounding win over the MP Warriors-GenSan, 76-65, in Game One of the Mindanao Division Finals of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association Second Conference Friday (December 8 ) at the Xavier University Gym.

* * *With his starters struggling early allowing the Warriors of boxing idol Manny Pacquiao to take the first period, 19-14, MisOr Coach Rex Salvana inserted reserves Mark Apepe and Rocky Sanchez in the second period and the duo provided the needed boost to turn the game in their favor.* Apepe sank back-to-back triples to give MisOr the lead for good, 26-21, while Sanchez energized the team and the crowd with his drives to the basket en route to a 32-28 lead at the break.

* * *Sanchez then added two triples in the third canto while Jerome Numeran scored on a pair of put-backs to maintain their distance.* The Warriors finally collapsed in the fourth period, greatly due to poor shooting as the wards of Coach Ramon Pido missed nine of their 14 attempts.* Gilbert Demape scored six straight MisOr points before Numeran put the finishing touches with seven markers of his own, including a three-point play that gave MisOr a 10-point lead entering the final three minutes, 68-58. Franklin Nailon settled the final tally with a triple at the buzzer, their biggest lead of the game.

* * *Sanchez, a former National University Bulldog, finished with 16 points, leading the charge for the team of MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno.* Numeran submitted 13 points.* Donald Tadena paced the Warriors with 17 points, 12 coming in the third quarter, followed by Apol Coronado with 13.

* * *MisOr can book a spot in the MVBA Finals tomorrow (December 10) when they travel to the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center today (December 10) for Game Two of the best-of-three series backed by ML Kwarta Padala, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Nature’s Spring Drinking Water, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

* * *KORONADAL CITY – The MP Warriors-GenSan rallied from as much as 17 points down in the second period to stop Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 81-78, and force a winner-take-all Game Three in the Mindanao Division Finals of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference Sunday at the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center.

* * *Inspired by the presence of team owner and boxing idol Manny Pacquiao, the Warriors of Coach Ramon Pido mounted their searing rally to erase the once 17-point deficit, 36-53, midway in the third quarter.* Jeffy Locsin, Louie Medalla, Miller Dennison and Rolly Menor took turns at chipping away at MisOr’s lead before finally taking the lead for the first time on a basket by Donald Tadena, 77-76, and 1:22 to play.

* * *Known for always killing the Warriors with his last second heroics during their previous meetings, Gilbert Demape ran out of tricks as he bungled two free throws off Locsin that could have tied the game with 12 seconds remaining and the Warriors ahead, 80-78.* Apol Coronado grabbed the rebound and was quickly fouled by Dondon Mendoza, connecting on his first attempt for the final tally.

* * *The Warriors grabbed the offensive rebound off Coronado’s missed second free throw but gave MisOr another golden chance after Medalla missed his two free throws off Bob Cozy Ilanga with nine seconds to play.* Collaring the rebound, Ilanga threw up a hurried three-point heave that bounced off the rim and thus setting the stage for Game Three on Wednesday (December 13) at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.* MisOr took Game One there, 76-65, last December 8.

* * *Locsin made up for his scoreless Game One with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Tadena finished with 15.* Menor and Dennison combined for 21 of their 25 points in the second half.* Mendoza topped MisOr of MVBA Chairman Gov. * * *CEBU CITY – M. * * *The Jewelers of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba led by as much as 19 points, 40-21, in the second canto.* The best Landmaster could do was cut it six, 43-49, at the 7:36 mark of the third.* Back-to-back baskets by Enrico Llanto and two free throws by Mike Manigo with 34 ticks to play held off the final Landmaster surge and preserved the win.

* * *Stephen Padilla topped M. Lhuillier anew with 13 points followed by Llanto and Jett Latonio with 12 apiece.* Bernie Ursal led Landmaster with 17 markers and Alex Cainglet chipped in 14 as the team of Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan definitely felt the loss of leading scorer Egay Billones who was suddenly called up to the pro league after their Game One victory.

* * *M. Lhuillier’s Stephen Padilla received an assist from Mike Manigo and buried a wide-open triple with 10 seconds left in the game to eliminate Landmaster, 90-89.* Landmaster had a golden chance to win the game but Egay Billones missed a medium jumper at the buzzer.

* * *It was a sorry loss for the Landmaster quintet of Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan, who controlled the whole fourth quarter until the fateful final 10 ticks.* Landmaster held a 66-60 lead, thanks to eight straight points by Billones to close the third period.* From there, M. Lhuillier slowly crept back in the final three minutes after Coach Raul Alcoseba fielded a novel five consisting of Padilla, Manigo, Woodrow Enriquez, Jett Latonio and Jayford Rodriguez.

* * *Rodriguez tipped in a miss by Enriquez with 46 seconds left to close in, 87-88.* In the ensuing play, Padilla fouled Bernie Ursal, but the latter could only split his charities for an 89-87 Landmaster lead.* Padilla’s miracle shot more than atoned for his failure to hit a similar winning shot in Game One won by Landmaster, 84-82, last December 7.* M. Lhuillier rebounded to take Game Two four days later, 83-71.

* * *Enriquez topped M. Lhuillier with 25 points.* Padilla added 19 en route to getting the nod as Visayas Division Most Valuable Player.* Alex Cainglet paced Landmaster with 29 while Billones, who missed Game Two, finished with 18.

* * *MisOr of MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno and Coach Rex Salvana needed an extra five minutes to grab the Mindanao Division crown from the defending champion Warriors of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

* * *Gilbert Demape soared for a lay-up with 24 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 63-63.* In the ensuing sequence, Demape added more heroics by tapping the ball out of bounds off the body of Apol Coronado and giving MisOr a chance to end the game.* However, the Warriors’ defense held form to force the overtime.

* * *In the overtime, the Ramon Pido-coached Warriors drew first blood thanks to a stab by Jeffy Locsin but MisOr responded by unloading 12 unanswered points to erect a 10-point lead with 51 ticks left, 75-65.* Still, the Warriors did not give up as Coronado knocked in six free throws to threaten at the 15-second mark, 71-75.* Rocky Sanchez then added two free throws to secure the win with a triple by Donald Tadena with a second to play settling the final score.

* * *CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Visayas Division Champion M. * * *The Jewelers of Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul D. Alcoseba can wrap up their second title in as many conferences with another win tomorrow (December 19) when they host MisOr of MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno and Coach Rex Salvana at the New Cebu City Coliseum starting at 6:00PM.* M. Lhuillier swept the then PacMan-GenSan (now MP Warriors) of Manny Pacquiao, 3-0, to annex the historic First Conference crown last June.

* * *After MisOr's Rocky Sanchez tied the score for the last time at 51-51, M. Lhuillier went on an 18-2 rampage led by the nine markers of Visayas Division MVP Stephen Padilla to close out the third period, 69-53. MisOr never recovered as M. * * *Padilla fired 23 points on five triples to power M. Lhuillier. THE FINALS: MISOR LEVELS SERIES, 96-84

* * *CEBU CITY - Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr forced a winner-take-all Game Three of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference by shocking M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City, 96-84, in front of a stunned crowd at the New Cebu City Coliseum Tuesday (December 19).* The series is now even at 1-1.

* * *From the onset, it seemed the Jewelers of Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul D. Alcoseba were all set to take home their second straight MVBA championship, controlling the first three periods and leading by as much as 13 points, 64-51, late in the third quarter.* Adding to the woes of the wards of MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno were a spate of injuries that limited the efficiency of usual starters Gilbert Demape, Bob Cozy Ilanga and Dondon Mendoza thus forcing Coach Rex Salvana to give extended playing time to his role players.* That was until disaster struck on the part of M. Lhuillier in the fourth period.

* * *M. Lhuillier's Alano Caputolan pegged the count with a field goal, 75-67.* Suddenly, MisOr went on a 19-0 run led by the two triples of Rocky Sanchez plus another six markers from the seldom-used Jun Pardillo thus giving them the lead for the first time in the game entering the last two minutes, 86-75.

* * *Mike Manigo ended MisOr's run with a basket at the 1:55 mark but Pardillo then hit a back-breaking triple, 89-77.* Manigo scored anew but Mendoza and Ilanga then added two free throws each to assure the win, the first by a Mindanao Division team over a Visayas Division team in the league supported by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring Water, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Reva Sandals, Sulpicio Lines, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

* * *Sanchez hit a total of six triples en route to a game-best and career-best 24 markers.* Ilanga bucked pain in his foot to contribute 18 points off the bench, 11 in the crucial final canto.* Woodrow Enriquez paced M. Lhuillier with 16 points followed by Stephen Padilla and Jayford Rodriguez with 11 markers each.* Sadly, the trio could only muster a single field goal courtesy of Rodriguez during their final quarter meltdown where MisOr outscored M. Lhuillier, 35-13.

* * *Game Three will be played tonight (December 20) again at the Cebu Coliseum starting at 6:00PM, a fitting ending to a very successful inaugural season of the MVBA.

THE FINALS: M. LHUILLIER BACK-TO-BACK MVBA CHAMPIONS

* * *CEBU CITY – M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City annexed the championship of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference with a hard-earned win over Mindanao Division champion Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 79-71, in the deciding Game Three of the series Wednesday (December 20) at the New Cebu City Coliseum.

* * *The multi-titled Jewelers of Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul D. Alcoseba used a decisive 12-0 run in the fourth period to nail back-to-back conference trophies in the community-based league made possible by the unwavering support of ML Kwarta Padala, Nature's Spring Water, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Reva Sandals, Sulpicio Lines, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

* * *From the game's final deadlock at 65-65, M. Lhuillier made its move sparked by a Jett Latonio triple and capped by a another surprise triple from big man Enrico Llanto and back-to-back baskets by Mike Manigo for a 77-65 tally entering the final two minutes.* MisOr tried its best to recover behind back-to-back field goals by Mindanao MVP Gilbert Demape and Game Two hero Rocky Sanchez, 69-77.* However, two free throws by Latonio with 36 ticks to play sealed the deal and another addition to the team's already crowded trophy case.

* * *It was an all-M. Lhuillier show in the first half as Visayas MVP Stephen Padilla, Danny Aying and Latonio caught fire early accounting for 36 points as M. Lhuillier led at the half, 48-35.

* * *Suddenly the ghosts of M. Lhuillier's Game Two 84-96 debacle the night earlier returned resulting in a third quarter collapse that allowed MisOr to begin the period with a 17-4 run and tie the game at 52-52 as Demape finally broke into the scoring column after a silent first half.* Both sides entered the final quarter deadlocked at 59-59 setting the stage for the exciting finish.

* * *Latonio finished with a personal conference-high of 23 points followed by Padilla with 18.* Padilla averaged a team-best 17.3 points in the series thus earning him the Finals MVP award.* All of Demape's 14 points came in the second half to lead MisOr.* Bob Cozy Ilanga followed with 11.

* * *MisOr Coach Rex Salvana accepted his team's First Runner-Up trophy after which league Commissioners Jose Murillo and Willy Generalao handed the Championship Trophy to the Jewelers.

* * * The inaugural two-conference season of the MVBA thus came to a close with a promise of a bigger and better second season in 2007.* Come next January 8, the MVBA will stage the Gov. Oscar Moreno Cup to be hosted by MVBA Chairman and MisOr team owner Gov. Oscar S. Moreno in celebration of the 77th year of the province.* The MVBA regular season will follow sometime in February.

How They Scored:
