Oo yata. Parang dumami mga projects niya recently (sa may Katipunan, ironically).

Ex-cagers register as party-list
By Sheila Crisostomo
The Philippine Star 02/11/2007

Filipino boxing idol Manny Pacquiao has been invited by the party-list group of athletes known as Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) to join them and represent athletes in the House of Representatives.

The PBA sought yesterday Comelec accreditation for the coming polls.

PBA spokesman Orlando Castelo said that negotiations are underway to convince Pacquiao to represent the athletes in the House of Representatives.

"We hope we can get him (Pacquiao)," said Castelo who claimed that PBA was able to recruit retired professional basketball superstars Alvin Patrimono and Jerry Cordiñera.

Castelo who had played for the YCO team in 1960s and became a coach of Tanduay team, said the party-list group PBA had registered with the Comelec as early as September 2006 but their application was only approved last month.

Former professional basketball players Cris Bolado said the PBA filed yesterday documents that informed the Comelec that the group of athletes will participate in the party-list elections.

PBA treasurer Dave Chua said Filipino athletes are neglected, hampering the victory of local competitors in international sports tournaments.

Chua said once a PBA representative wins they would ensure the welfare of all active and retired athletes.

Athletes to seek party-list posts

MANILA, Philippines -- A group of former professional basketball players have banded themselves into Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (Force of Heroic Athletes or PBA) to participate as a party-list in the May 2007 polls.

The group, represented by its secretary Merwin John Castelo, was the 94th organization to file a manifestation to join the political fray at the Commission on Elections on Saturday.

Other famous basketball players like Cris Bulado and Terry Saldana accompanied Castelo when he filed the manifestation.

Former professional basketball stars Jerry Cordinera and Alvin Patrimonio are among those being considered by the PBA as its nominees in the party-list.

The 1987 Constitution allows the marginalized sectors of society, including farmers, workers, and women, to participate in legislating pro-poor laws through party-list representation.

Athletes’ party-list

Other athletes have thrown their hats in the political ring.

Leaders of the Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta, including former Philippine Basketball Association players Chris Bollado, Ronald Magtulis, Terry Saldaña and Marwin Castelo, filed their manifestation to participate in the election as a party-list group.

Their nominees for a seat in the House of Representatives include former PBA players Alvin Patrimonio and Jerry Codiñera.

The group’s spokesperson, Orly Castelo, said the group was also wooing Pacquiao to be one of their nominees.

This was before the group found out that Pacquiao had been sworn in as a member of the Atienza-led Liberal Party faction.

No bench-warmers

Castelo said the group, if it wins a seat in the House, would be the voice of the athletes who are often neglected by the government.

“We want athletes to have direct representation in Congress so our appeals for funding and other needs would not have to pass through committees and various sports bodies,” he said.

Aside from proper compensation and benefits for the athletes, Castelo said their group would also push for the putting up of a hospital for athletes that would give them a 20-percent discount on their medicines.

* * *Looking at the list of Senatorial candidates, there are several candidates that may qualify as a basketball personality.

* * *First is former Senator Anna Dominique "Nikki" Coseteng, the first woman team manager of a PBA team.* Coseteng managed Galerie Dominique in the early 1980's.

* * *Then there is another former Senator John Henry "Sonny" Osmena, who used to own the PBL team John O Juzz earlier this decade.

* * *Finally, we have Gov. Luis "Chavit" Singson of Ilocos Sur who used to own a team in the old United Regional Basketball League (URBL) named the Ilocos Sur Snipers in 2004.

Isn't the PBA's "Fortune Cookie" Atoy Co running for anything in Pasig? I believe he is an incumbent City Councilor.

For that matter how about UST Coach Pido Jarencio? I recall he was a City Councilor in the third district of Manila at one time or another in the recent past.

In Valenzuela a former UE Red Warrior, Mar Morelos, is to my recollection an incumbent Councilor. Is he running for reelection?

FRANZ PUMAREN - PBA player and UAAP Coach
for Councilor, Quezon City

Actually, he's running (or ran? kailan ba talaga magiging past tense? after the voting or the proclamation?) for congressman and is in 2nd place, trailing Mat Defensor.

How are the other candidates doing?

* * *Actually, it's the family patriarch Coach Filomeno "Pilo" Pumaren Jr. who is running for Congress in the Third District of Quezon City.* Coach Pilo is the official candidate of Ang Kapatiran.* Sadly, he was not able to unseat the incumbent representative Rep. Matias V. Defensor Jr.
