Today's only game was the 1st elimination game between NCAA & UAAP Champions Magnolia and Kettlekorn.

Kettlekorn-UST Popkings 128 Magnolia Spinners 133 3OT

The undermanned Popkings seemed to have to won the ball game leading by 3 with less than 10secs left but a 3-point heave and a shooter's bounce by Pong Escobal tied the game. Evangelista failed to hit his 2nd freethrow earlier which could have iced the game.

In OT, the Spinners almost closed out the game with an 8pt OT lead but the Popkings refused to die & fought back with clutch 3 pointers. Angeles' missed freethrow gave the spinners a 3pt lead with 4secs left. Japs Cuan ran the whole court and heaved a hailmary way beyond the 3-pt line to tie the ballgame at the buzzer.

With the ballgame tied at 122 in 2OT, Custodio failed to win the game after fumbling the ball in the last possession. Evangelista's follow-up tied the game in the previous possession.

The game finally took its toll when the Popkings were down to 6 men. Ogie Menor's crucial offensive rebounds together with Custodio's baskets finally sealed the game.

Ballgame started at 3:30pm and ended at 6:45pm.

Custodio led all players exploding for 34pts. Aljamal finished with 27pts & 12rebs.

Sadly, Kettlekorn finished the conference without a win.

Definitely a classic never-say-die ballgame no one will forget.:lol:

* * *I am proud to have personally witnessed this future classic game.* I believe this game should define the character of Magnolia for the rest of the Silver Cup.* Some notable performances:

* * *Bonifacio Custodio -- after scoring only six points in the first quarter and going scoreless in the next two, he explodes for 14 in the fourth quarter and a combined 14 in the three overtimes for a total of 34 points in 31 minutes of play;

* * *Yousif Aljamal -- submitted a double-double of 27 points and 13 rebounds in 41 minutes;

* * *Jeff Chan -- played 44 minutes for 23 points, six rebounds and six assists;

* * *Samuel Ekwe -- another double-double with 11 points and 20 rebounds in 41 minutes;

* * *John Paul Escobal -- nine points but he made the triple that sent the game into the first overtime;

* * *Rogemar Menor -- five points in the final overtime to put away the tired opposition.

* * *In fairness to Kettle Korn, they should not be ashamed for their gallant stand, leading by double-digits in the first period and threatening to turn the game into a blowout.* They were down to only five able bodies during the final minute of the third overtime.* Allan Evangelista, the sixth player, could not continue with cramps.* The game almost became four-on-five as Mark Canlas played with four fouls.* Four other teammates had already fouled out in Dylan Ababou, June Dizon, Chester Taylor and Josh Urbiztondo.* Several players were also unable to play due to various injuries and ailmnents.

* * *After the game, both teams happily congratulated each other of a job well done.* I expect this game to be replayed a lot of times!* It was a good show for the fans.

How They Scored:

* * *MAGNOLIA (133) Custodio 34, Aljamal 27, Chan 23, Ekwe 11, Escobal 9, Angeles 8, Menor 7, Raneses 6, Jones 5, Villanueva 3, Gamalinda 0.

* * *KETTLE KORN (128) Evangelista 26, Duncil 22, Espiritu 20, Urbiztondo 14, Dizon 13, Taylor 12, Ababou 8, Cuan 5, dela Cruz 5, Canlas 3.

* * *Period Scores: 26-35, 46-44, 59-59, 86-86 (reg.), 109-109 (OT), 122-122 (2OT), 133-128 (3OT).

Yep, that should rank among the best games ever in PBL history. It's really a pleasure watching "no tomorrow" games, because you're sure that both teams would give no quarter. The game started at 3:30 and ended sometime around 7 pm.

Really, a war of attrition. Can you imagine Japs Cuan throwing a quartercourt heave, with his left hand, even? That and many other plays by both teams made this game so very special.

Pong Escobal showed his smarts at running the team and courage to take the big shot when the game is on the line. Japs showed that he can run a team, but he still needs to make a consistent outside shot, in spite of his making the tying heave. Je

Koy Banal allowed Bonbon Custodio to create inside, and how he exploded. Jeff Chan finally found his game, to counter the disappointing performance of Jonas Villanueva. Evangelista, Ababou, Espiritu, Taylor, these were big men who were taking threes, and making them. From deep in the corners, even, probably among the more difficult shots to take.

Since this was a de facto matchup of players of the NCAA/UAAP champions, the experience they got playing in this kind of war wil serve them well* when they get back to their respective leagues.

Great game! With pride at stake, both teams stepped up to the plate and gave it their all. Showing that they do have the heart of champions.

^ We just wanted the game to end asap. Plans and schedules were altered that day because of that game. Muntik pa kaming mag away ni misis kasi hindi kami makaalis ng bahay. lagi ko kasing sinasabi - "sandali na lang, last 2 minutes na. antay ka na lang sandali" ;D
