BIGGER SECOND SEASON COMING

* * *WITH last year’s inaugural two-conference season successfully completed, the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) braces for a much-improved second offering in the first quarter this year.

* * *But before the actual combat begins, the teams will engage in a pair of pre-season tournaments expected to gauge their preparedness for the long and grueling battles ahead.

* * *First, MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno will host the Governors Cup from January 26 to 31 at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.* Gov. Moreno’s Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr cagers are expected to do their best in defending their home turf against the visitors led by back-to-back champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu of Michel J. Lhuillier, MP Warriors-GenSan of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, Cebu Landmaster-Mantawi of Joe R. Soberano and the Lanao Royals of Gov. Imelda Q. Dimaporo.

* * *After that, it will be the turn of the City Government of Cebu to host the Cebu City Charter Cup from February 18 to 23 at the New Cebu City Coliseum.* M. Lhuillier will definitely have its hands full against its fellow MVBA teams and possibly a guest team from Metro Manila.

* * *The new season also signals a lot of new developments in the composition of the teams as they try their best to come up with the best line-up possible.* Already, teams are negotiating with players and expect to see some new faces in the coaching front.

* * *Finally, the big question of expansion is answered with a resounding yes as the league is already conducting negotiations with parties interested in putting up new teams.

* * *An exciting season is to unfold in the coming months and the fans cannot wait any further.* The two pre-season tournaments alone are sure to whet the appetite of MVBA fans for honest to goodness Filipino regional basketball!

Oscar Moreno Cup at the Xavier University Gym Monday evening (January 29).

* * *The nine-man M. Lhuillier squad of basketball patron Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba banked on their strong finishing kick to put away guest team Pagadian City, 93-80.* MisOr of host and MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. M. LHUILLIER WINS GOV. MORENO CUP

* * *CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City turned to its vast championship experience to stun host Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 72-67, and capture the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Gov. Oscar Moreno Cup in front of stunned crowd Tuesday night at the Xavier University Gym.

* * *Veterans Danny Aying and Stephen Padilla starred in a 13-2 salvo to open the final period and give the team of basketball patron Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba an unassailable 64-54 lead with five minutes to go.

* * *Still, MisOr of MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno and Coach Rex Salvana gamely fought back with Lowell Briones canning two free throws off Woodrow Enriquez to threaten at the 36-second mark, 67-70. Needing to give up two fouls to enter the penalty situation, MisOr took too much off the clock until Rocky Sanchez and Mark Ababon were whistled in succession with only eight seconds to play.* Padilla calmly sank both free throws off Ababon’s foul to settle the final tally.* With no more timeouts, MisOr quickly threw in the ball only to see Enriquez break up the play allowing M. Lhuillier to dribble the time away to claim the trophy and the 100,000-peso winner’s purse. MisOr took home 75,000 pesos.

* * *Playing with only a nine-man roster riddled with nagging injuries throughout the five-day joust, Coach Alcoseba had to dig deep in his arsenal for one final push, including a suffocating defense that greatly reduced MisOr’s offensive output compared to their 92.0 points per game average in their first four outings. M. Lhuillier thus avenged their classification round loss to MisOr, 80-85, last January 27, their only loss in the tournament organized by Gov. Moreno and the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental in line with the province’s 77th Founding Anniversary and supported by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring, Accel, Sulpicio Lines, Reva Sandals, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

* * *Padilla starred for M.Lhuillier with 25 points, 10 coming in the pivotal fourth period.* Enriquez finished with 15 markers to get the nod as tournament Most Valuable Player after registering a team-best 17.0 points per game scoring average.* Randy Sevilla paced MisOr with 12 points followed by Briones with 11.

* * *In the opener, the Lanao Royals of Gov. Imelda Q. Dimaporo salvaged Third Place and the 50,000-peso prize by nipping guest team Pagadian City, 70-68.

* * *Jan Philip Villaver canned a jumper and Baltazar Jueves added a free throw to push the Royals on top with 43 ticks on the clock, 70-67.* Pagadian’s Melvin Mamaclay then struggled by making only one of his four free throw attempts in the final 25 seconds allowing the Royals to complete their great escape.

* * *Villaver finished with a tournament-best 38 points as a one-man wrecking crew for playing coach Cristopel Abellana. Mamaclay led Pagadian with 19 followed by Nathaniel Cruz with 12.

How They Scored:

* * *LANAO (70) – Villaver 38, Rosal 7, A. Jueves 7, Abellana 6, Libatog 4, B. Jueves 4, Senining 2, Abang 2, Meting 0, Sapiler 0, Valconcha 0, Dais 0.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY –M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu opened its quest for a rare three-peat by repeating its mastery over Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 75-67, at the start of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference at the Xavier University Gym Monday night (March 26).

Woodrow Enriquez scored seven straight M. Lhuillier points in the third canto that restored the lead for good to the wards of team owner Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul D. Alcoseba, 54-52. Suddenly, M.Lhuillier turned up the defense and coupled with the return of Enriquez limited MisOr to only five markers in the fourth quarter. Compounding MisOr’s woes was their inability to score in the final four minutes.

VISAYAS FINALS: SERIES ALL EVEN, 1-1

* * *CEBU CITY – Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu banked on a strong endgame to defeat M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu, 70-67, and level the best-of-three Visayas Division Finals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference at one game apiece Sunday (June 3) at the New Cebu City Coliseum.

* * *Guard Luther Luke Justiniani buried a triple with 1:21 to play to push Arthro of sports patron Jonathan “Atan” Guardo and Coach Al Solis on top for good, 68-65.* After a series of failed offensives on both sides, Mike Manigo opted to drive to the hoop for a lay-up with ten seconds remaining and cut the Arthro lead to a point, 67-68.

* * *Coach Solis then sued for time.* M. Lhuillier quickly fouled Alex Cainglet who coolly sank both his free throws for the final tally with 8.7 ticks on the clock.* Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba was out of timeouts so after a quick inbound, Jett Latonio fired a desperation triple that bounced off the rim and out of bounds, preserving the win for Arthro.

* * *M. Lhuillier suffered a big blow when point guard Woodrow Enriquez fouled out with still six minutes to play in the final canto and his team holding a shaky four-point advantage, 61-57.* Arthro pounced on the opportunity as JR Quinahan and Justiniani scored at will, including back-to-back baskets that equalized the score for the last time at 65-65 and 2:10 to play.* Arthro outscored M. Lhuillier in the fourth period, 22-10.

* * *The winner-take-all Game Three will be held on Wednesday (June 6) at the University of San Carlos Gym.

* * *It was a sorry loss for M. Lhuillier, which led by as much as 17 markers early in the second period, 27-10, and was firmly in the lead until Justiniani’s crucial triple.* The team thus absorbed its first loss in the conference co-presented by ML Kwarta Padala, Converse and Gatorade and also with the help of Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Ocean Jet, Parklane Hotel, Red Horse, Yayoy’s Grill, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.* Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Holiday Plaza Hotel, Trans-Asia Shipping and Reva Sandals have also thrown in their support.

* * *Quinahan led Arthro with 22 points while Justiniani followed with 13.* Alano Caputolan paced M. Lhuillier with 14 points followed by Stephen Padilla with 12.* Padilla surprisingly failed to convert a triple.

* * *Meanwhile, Game One of the best-of-three Mindanao Division Finals will be this Friday (June 8 ) as the Iligan Archangels of Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz host Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr of Gov. Oscar S. Moreno at the MSU-IIT Gym.* The Visayas and Mindanao champions will then clash in a best-of-three series for the MVBA First Conference title.

ARTHRO VISAYAS CHAMPIONS!

* * *CEBU CITY – Arthro Kontra Arthritis dethroned M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu, 87-82, in the winner-take-all Game Three of the best-of-three Visayas Division Finals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference Wednesday night (June 6) at the University of San Carlos Gym.

* * *A strong first period finish was all the team of sports patron Jonathan “Atan” Guardo and Coach Al Solis needed.* A five-point cluster by Stephen Padilla gave M. Lhuillier its biggest lead of game, 14-8.* Arthro then went on a 15-4 finishing tear anchored on Bernie Ursal to lead after 10 minutes, 23-18.

* * *From there Arthro erected its biggest margin early in the third canto, 50-38.* M. Lhuillier did not give up easily as Padilla, Aldrin Ocanada, Woodrow Enriquez and Mike Manigo tried their best to cut into Arthro’s lead.* Padilla nailed a triple to threaten, 56-57, and 2:30 to play in the third.

* * *Ursal and JR Quinahan conspired to restore Arthro’s 10-point lead early in the final canto, 72-62.* M. Lhuillier countered with a searing 14-4 rally, forcing the final deadlock at 76-76 on a side jumper by Alano Caputolan.* Suddenly, Game Two hero Luther Luke Justiniani completed a three-point play off Padilla to push Arthro on top for good with three minutes left, 79-76.

* * *Left with no recourse, M. Lhuillier gave up fouls to send Arthro players to the free throw line.* Justiniani made four out of six attempts to keep Arthro on safely top.* Enriquez threatened one last time with a field goal at the 10-second mark, 82-85.* Coach Solis then called the game’s last timeout.* In the ensuing play, Alex Cainglet settled the final tally with two free throws off the final foul of Manigo with eight seconds to play.

* * *Cainglet paced Arthro with 21 markers followed by Justiniani with 15.* Quinahan had 14 points and 12 rebounds.* Padilla topped M. Lhuillier with 26 followed by Enriquez with 21.* M. Lhuillier took Game One last June 1, 82-74.* Arthro bounced back to level the series by winning Game Two last June 3, 70-67.

* * *Arthro thus denied M. Lhuillier and its owner Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba a rare three-peat in the league co-presented by ML Kwarta Padala, Converse and Gatorade and also with the help of Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Ocean Jet, Parklane Hotel, Red Horse, Yayoy’s Grill, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.* Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Holiday Plaza Hotel, Trans-Asia Shipping and Reva Sandals have also thrown in their support.* M. Lhuillier ruled both conferences in the MVBA’s inaugural season last year.

* * *Arthro now awaits the winner of the best-of-three Mindanao Division Finals between the Iligan Archangels and Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr.* The series will begin this Friday (June 8 ) with MisOr visiting the Archangels at the MSU-IIT Gym starting at 6:00PM.

MINDANAO FINALS: ILIGAN PULLS GAME ONE SHOCKER, 87-85

* * *ILIGAN CITY – The Iligan Archangels shocked heavily-favored defending champion Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 87-85, in Game One of the best-of-three Mindanao Division Finals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference Friday (June 8 ) at the noisy MSU-IIT Gym.

* * *Point guard Von Harry Lanete atoned for his near-fatal miscues by burying a triple with 18 seconds left to put the Archangels of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz and Coach Mike Reyes on top for good, 86-85.* In the previous one-minute span, Lanete missed two free throws and committed a traveling violation in what could have pushed his side to the lead much earlier.

* * *In the ensuing sequence, MisOr could only watch helplessly as new recruit Dennis Concha bungled two free throws off the final foul of Jan Malinao at the 10-second mark.* Mark Abadia grabbed the defensive rebound and drew the last foul of Randy Sevilla.* Abadia then gave the robust crowd some anxious moments by missing his first free throw but made the second to settle the final tally.* With Coach Bong Abad out of timeouts, MisOr fired a quick inbound pass to Mark Ababon who missed a twisting lay-up at the buzzer that could have forced an extra period.

* * *Employing a torrid scoring pace and an unforgiving defense, the Archangels scored their first 25 markers in the first five minutes en route to taking the first quarter, 30-19.* MisOr with team owner and league chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno in attendance clawed back behind the good plays of Anton Viloria, Ababon and big men Randy Sevilla and Franklin Nailon.* Both teams battled through eight deadlocks and five lead changes in the second half alone.

* * *Carlos Sayon scored 11 of his team-best 21 points in the opening quarter to lead the Archangels.* Abadia followed with 17 points and 10 rebounds.* Viloria topped MisOr with 25 markers, 11 coming in the fourth quarter, followed by Ababon and Nailon with 13 each.

* * *Newly-crowned Visayas Division champion Arthro Kontra Arthritis of sports patron Jonathan “Atan” Guardo and Coach Al Solis will face the winner of the series in another best-of-three affair for the MVBA championship made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Converse and Gatorade and also with the help of Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Ocean Jet, Parklane Hotel, Red Horse, Yayoy’s Grill, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.* Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Holiday Plaza Hotel, Trans-Asia Shipping and Reva Sandals have also thrown in their support.

* * *MisOr and Iligan will mix it up anew in in Game Two Saturday night (June 9) at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro.* MisOr badly needs a victory a home to force a deciding Game Three, tentatively set for today at the Xavier Gym anew starting at 6:00PM.* On the other hand, an Iligan triumph will give the franchise its very first trip to the MVBA Finals.

How They Scored:

* * *ILIGAN (87) – Sayon 21, Abadia 17, Lanete 15, Malinao 12, France 7, Abatayo 6, Jueves 3, Tangarorang 3, Esperat 2, Sereno 1, Tundag 0, Hermosa 0.

* * *CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – With their backs against the wall, defending Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr scored an emphatic 91-79 thrashing of the Iligan Archangels to even their best-of-three Mindanao Division Finals series at 1-1 Saturday (June 9) at the Xavier University Gym.

* * *Homegrown talent Nico Pupos came off the bench and banged in nine markers in the third canto that gave MisOr its biggest lead of the game, 69-47.* From there, it was smooth sailing as Pupos and Randy Sevilla submitted timely baskets to cushion a late Archangels rally led by Jeffrey France and Von Harry Lanete.

* * *In contrast to their masterful 87-85 win in Game One last June 8 at the MSU-IIT Gym, the Archangels of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz and Coach Mike Reyes were only in the contest during the early stages of the first period, 8-6, on a basket by Mark Abadia.* From there, Julius Navales hit a triple, his lone score for the game, to put MisOr of MVBA chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno and Coach Bong Abad ahead for good, 9-8.* That was the beginning of a 13-2 MisOr run that closed the first period, 19-10.

* * *Game Three of the series will be played less than 24 hours from now on Sunday (June 10) at Xavier.* The MVBA is co-presented by ML Kwarta Padala, Converse and Gatorade and also with the help of Nature's Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Ocean Jet, Parklane Hotel, Red Horse, Yayoy's Grill, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball. * * *Anton Viloria hit a triple with 20 seconds to go in the first overtime to tie the score anew at 89-89.* Mark Abadia then drove strong to the basket only to see the rim cough out the ball at the buzzer and set the stage for the second extension.

THE FINALS: MISOR MVBA CHAMPIONS

* * *CEBU CITY – Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr whipped Arthro Kontra Arthritis, 74-65, Friday night (June 15) at the New Cebu City Coliseum to bag the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference.* MisOr swept the best-of-three series, two games to nil.

* * *MisOr of league chairman Gov. Oscar S. Moreno made history as the first team from Mindanao to grab the MVBA title.* Defense was the key as winning coach Bong Abad employed a combination of zone and man to man defenses to frustrate Arthro, the Visayas Division champions owned by sports patron Jonathan “Atan” Guardo and coached by Al Solis.

* * *A crippling 15-3 run to close out the third period anchored on Mark Jonas Ababon, Dennis Concha and Randy Sevilla gave MisOr a 54-47 lead that later ballooned to ten markers midway in the fourth period, 65-55,

* * *Arthro gamely fought back with JR Quinahan adding two free throws to threaten 62-65, and 3:30 to play.* MisOr answered with back-to-back baskets by Mark Apepe and Concha to ease the pressure.* Concha then made two more free throws to put the game beyond reach with still 42 ticks on the clock, 69-62.

* * *Quinahan then launched a triple as Arthro’s last hurrah, 65-71.* Ababon and Concha settled the final tally with free throws.

* * *For his outstanding overall performance throughout the conference that saw him average 11.7 points per game, big Frank Nailon was named as Most Valuable Player (MVP).* Nailon scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in their 74-71 Game One victory last June 12 at the Xavier University Gym.* In Game two, the 6’5” Nailon focused on defending Arthro’s stratospheric frontline.

* * *Concha topped MisOr with 18 points followed by Sevilla with nine.* Apepe, Ababon and Lowell Briones all had eight markers in the balanced attack.* Quinahan led Arthro with 29 points while Bernie Ursal added 13.* MisOr was able to limit Arthro’s prolific guards Alex Cainglet and Luther Luke Justiniani to a total of nine points, a far cry from the duo’s combined 26.4-point average entering Game Two.

* * *MisOr will have little time to celebrate as they join Arthro and other MVBA teams – M. Lhuillier and Iligan Archangels – and two teams from the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) – Burger King and Dazz ‘Sang Patak – in an invitational tournament in Cebu from June 24 to 28.* The said event will be sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP), the first major provincial event of the organization since its creation earlier this year.
