JOHN VALDERAMA waxed hot with his triples in the endgame and the defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals tripped the St. Francis Doves, 70-66, to bag their third straight title in the UCAA basketball tournament at the Olivarez College Sports Center.

The Generals trailed the Doves, 62-63, in the closing minutes but coach Nomar Isla’s boys came charging back as St. Francis found itself in foul trouble.

Ronjay Buenafe led the Generals with 21 points, while Alain Musni had 14, and Gester Ebuen tallied nine.

Earlier, Lito Casil showed the way with 25 points and lifted the Asian College of Science and Technology Lightnings to a 90-79 beating of the Olivarez College Sea Lions in the battle for third place.

After the Doves’ Raymund Ilagan fended off the Generals’ unforgiving attack with a driving shot, Valderama found an opening from the left corner, and popped in a three-point bomb with 49 ticks to go. This allowed the Generals to grab the upperhand, 65-63.

Leomer Losentes, who led the Doves with 28 points, answered Valderama’s trey with his own three-pointer in the ensuing play, allowing St. Francis to stay ahead for the last time at 66-65.

But Valderama got his bearing from the right corner in the next play, and with less than 30 seconds left, he replied with a three-point shot at the right side off an assist by Ebuen.

The Generals, who were ahead by two, 68-66, following Valderama’s heroics, then started celebrating after Ronjay Buenafe added two more charities with four ticks remaining off Chad Paez’s foul.

"In the UCAA, it’s an honor for us to get our first-ever grand slam. I’m sure nobody will forget us. This is a fitting gift to the support which the EAC administration and our president Dr. Jose Paul Campos gave to us," remarked Isla.

Assistant coach Christopher Villamayor added that the Doves’ performance was better than in Game 1, when the Generals won, 69-66.

"Lumaban kami sa endgame. Mas maganda ang nilaro namin ngayon dahil nakadikit kami," said Villamayor.
