FEU disbands dethroned Tams but keeps Flores
The Philippine Star 09/19/2006

Reeling from the impact of its failure to defend the UAAP men’s basketball crown, Far Eastern University yesterday disbanded the Tams after failing to even make it to the Final Four.

Anton Montinola, the school’s senior representative to the UAAP board, made the announcement a week after his Tams dropped out of the semifinal race following a 68-70 loss to the Ateneo Eagles.

The Tams thus became the first defending champion squad to crash out of the semis since the Final Four format was adopted in 1998.

Montinola, however, clarified that the coaching staff, headed by Bert Flores, remains intact.

"The team has been disbanded although the coaching staff stays," said Montinola.

The disbandment would mean players will be stripped of their allowances and dormitory privileges although Montinola assured the scholarship will remain should they opt to continue to study at FEU.

"The scholarship will continue if they still want to study," said Montinola.

Flores, on the other hand, hopes that the FEU management will still give them another chance.

"We’re still holding on and hoping we’ll be given another chance," said Flores, who steered the Tams to the 2005 crown on a team built around Arwind Santos.

With the breakup, FEU is expected to recruit new players and activate some from its second team.

The squad is also expected to tap some of the players from its high school team slated to dispute the juniors’ crown with Ateneo.

"Definitely we have ample high school talent. We will elevate them to Team B next semester for training. We must improve next year," said Montinola.

He, however, stressed that players who will be eligible for next season will not be allowed to play in the Philippine Basketball League.

Among the Tams who saw action this season, only Jeff Chan, Jonas Villanueva and Francis Barcellano were allowed to play in the PBL since they’ve already played out their final year in the UAAP.

"Ateneo and UST did it, and it worked for them that’s why they’re successful this season," Montinola said. — Joey Villar
