Its down to two teams. AFter the non-appearance of SSC-Cavite in their scheduled match versus STI today, fearless forecasters predicts a BATTLE OF THE COMPUTER COLLEGES in the NAASCU 6th Season.

Not to dampen the spirits of the other teams, on paper, STI and AMACU have the best line-up other than SSC-Cavite.

STI is bannered by Jun Perez with four DLSU-Dasma recruits providing spark to the team while AMACU is unstoppable with Journeyman Laading MVP Contender Chito Jaime.

Place your bets here and tell us your insight on this match-up...... ::)

Â* Â* Â*IT'S too bad that the Baycats' super season had to boil down to this.Â* It seems they are bent on forfeiting their remaining games as a form of protest after the committee decided to suspend Coach Edgar Macaraya for his misconduct in the elimination round.

Â* Â* Â*Anyway if there is no way to convince them to change their minds then prepare for . . .

I think it's too early to count out the New Era University Hunters because they just beat the AMACU Titans. Don't count them out because they are peaking at the right time. New Era Unviersity is not going down without a fight. They have proven that they could beat any team in the NAASCU Tourney. They may be weaker on the line-up and papers but they have the heart, the heart of a Champion.

Yup New Era is also good. Unfortunately they were derailed today as the STI COllege Olympians won over them 72-61. Most probably STI and NEw Era will face each other in the final four. Good luck to the Hunters.

Well everyone is entitled to his own opinion. We lost to AMA in the first round by four points because of Chito Jaime's exploits. Last week when the teams met again AMA raced to a 22-11 lead in the first quarter with Jaime scoring 10 points. COach VIc Ycasiano made a defensive adjustment and Jaime just scored 4 points the rest of the way. Actually we are not afraid of Jaime because he is just one man, if his team mates like Mercado, Abac & the others play the way they complemented Jaime in the first round then we are in trouble. By the way that game against AMA, we won by 12 points. We welcome the challenge of containing Chito Jaime and that will make winning the championship a herculeanan task. But as they say... " Mas masarap kung mahirap... and we lose its okay coz giving 100% & losing to a better team is all the same as long as you gave your all.

Ex-EAC Generals Top point Guard De Guzman will play a vital role in bringing the AMACU Titans to the promise land. He needs to control the game through out, and keeps the ball moving should defense of STI clogs on Jaime. His experience in annexing the 17 wins and 0 loss of the eAC Generals in the 2004 UCAA Season will be the key factor here.

GAME TODAY (Rizal Coliseum)
3 p.m.—STI vs AMACU (Game 1)

THE budding rivalry between two top computer schools erupts when STI and AMA Computer collide today in Game 1 of the NAASCU basketball finals series at the Rizal Coliseum.

The two teams have emerged from the ruins of University of Manila’s crumbled dynasty and also survived brash newcomer San Sebastian-Recoletos Cavite to eventually square off in the best-of-three championship.

Of the two squads, however, the Olympians are no stranger in the finals. They faced the Hawks in the title series last season, UM’s fifth straight before it lost key players.

Experience will be on the side of STI which boasts of a solid backcourt with Haddi Porto at the helm. Porto keyed the Olympians’ 12-2 top record in the eliminations. Marc Anthony Reyes

PATRICK Mercado came through with a big three-pointer in the last two minutes as AMA Computer nipped STI, 74-70, yesterday to move within a win from the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities men’s basketball championship at the Rizal Coliseum.

The burly forward didn’t wait for the STI defense to settle before flinging the booming trey to give the Titans a 73-68 cushion en route to the Game 1 triumph in the best-of-three title series.

The Titans will try to take the title, the league’s first which won’t bore the name of fallen superpower University of Manila, in Game 2 on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The 6-foot-5 Chito Jaime, a prized rookie, finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Titans, who trailed for the most part and entered the fourth quarter trailing, 50-54. Mercado backed him up with 12 points.

The scores:

AMACU 74—Jaime 23, Zablan 15, Mercado 12, Franco 6, Galang 4, Gabica 4, Galvez 3, Abac 3, Vergara 2, De Guzman 1, Dela Peña 1, Suarez 0, Padilla 0.

AMA COMPUTER University is eyeing its first championship today but STI College will be standing in the way when they collide again today in Game 2 of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) men’s basketball title series at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Titans will be riding on the momentum that shifted to their favor after taking a 54-50 triumph in Game 1 last Saturday.

They hope to become the league’s first champion team after University of Manila relinquished the throne after five years of dominance.

Chito Jaime, the hands down favorite to win the Most Valuable Player award, will again be the tower of power for the Titans.

Jaime amassed 23 big points in Game 1 to anchor AMACU’s running game and at the same time lord it over the shaded lane.

Expected to provide support are forward Patrick Mercado and point guard Robbie Zablan, who created three-way trouble to the normally free-flowing game of the Olympians.

The Olympians will try to avert a sweep through off-guard Haddi Porto and center Dexter Micutuan, who will have to step up this time.

The duo went silent for most of the fourth quarter and left Rodrigo Rufin to do the job, spelling disaster for STI the last time out

AMA COMPUTER University downed chief rival STI College, 74-65, Wednesday to complete a sweep of the 2006 National Athletics Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) men’s basketball title at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Forward Patrick Mercado and guard Robbie Zablan filled up the slack left by MVP winner Chito Jaime as the Titans upended the league’s eliminations leader in the best-of-three title series.

STI held the 6-foot-5 Jaime to only five points but Mercado scored 17 points and Zablan added 13 aside from keeping the Titans’ transition game smoothly flowing.

The Bulacan-raised Jaime, who also took the top rebounder award, led the Mythical Team that included Mercado and Zablan and STI gunners Dexter Micutuan and John Macalma.

New Era University’s Jeff De Guzman emerged the scoring champion with an average of 21.6 points per game, while STI’s Jun Perez proved best in assists with a 5.8 assist per outing.

Bonnie Garcia of AMACU was picked Coach of the Year.

AMA captures NAASCU title

AMA COMPUTER University finally fulfilled its date with history, beating arch-rival STI College, 74-65, to capture the title in the sixth NAASCU basketball tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Robbie Zablan emerged as an unlikely hero for the Titans, who wrapped up the best-of-three title series, 2-0.

Zablan, a 5-7 junior guard, scored 11 of his 13 points in the payoff period to power the Titans of coach Boni Garcia and adviser Richard delos Santos to their first title in the six-year-old league.

AMA also became the first team to win a title after University of Manila, which dominated the league’s first five years.

"We’re very, very happy. This is really a major achievement for the team,"said Garcia, who was also voted as best coach. "I have to share the credit to the players, who worked hard every game, and the management, which supported the team all the way."

It was a double celebration for AMA, which also bagged the title in the women’s division for the third straight year.

AMA defeated Centro Escolar University, 66-62, in their winner-take-all women’s title showdown.

Chito Jaime of AMA was named MVP while Christian Gobis of UM was voted as rookie of the year.

Joining Jaime in the mythical team are Zablan and Patrick Mercado of AMA and Macalma and Micutuan of STI.

New Era University’s Jeffey De Guzman emerged as the scoring champion, Jaime was the rebounding leader and Junjun Perez of STI was the assist winner.

In the battle for third place, CEU subdued New Era , 101-79.

Earlier in the day, UM defeated New Era, 75-66, to clinch its fifth straight juniors title.

Rookie forward Renbert Bayo scattered 20 points and two other players also scored in double figures for the Eugene Tan-mentored Hakwlets.

St. Clare College (Caloocan) whipped San Sebastian College-Cavite, 90-70, for third place.
