Cagefest hopes to tap young talent

The Futures Basketball League (FBL), the newest school-based organized basketball tournament for kids 13 years old and below will go nationwide starting this season with regional tournaments scheduled in Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon aside from Metro Manila.

This was announced by the organizing Futures Sports & Events Management Int’l Corp. at the recent organizational meeting for Metro Manila-based athletic directors and coaches where close to 30 schools were represented including ten new schools from the inaugural cast of the first tournament held earlier this year.

"For this year, we will definitely be holding regional tournaments in Davao City, Cebu City, and in a key city in Luzon with the FBL Davao opening on August 19, followed by Cebu on September 6, the Metro Manila leg on September 16, and the Luzon edition on October 20, here in Manila alone, we expect around 50 teams to play, up from the 40 teams we had the first time," said overall tournament director Jay Salvador.

Sponsored by Smart Communications, Primovit Multivitamins, Gatorade, and Adidas, the tournament features 3 divisions, mini for boys 8 to 10 years old, midgets for boys 11 to 13 years old, and a girls’ division, in the inaugural tournament, Ateneo de Manila ruled the mini group, San Beda College-Alabang took the boys’ midget crown, while St. Scholastica’s College emerged champions among the girls’ teams.

FBL sets 3-on-3 battle

AROUND 200 teams are expected to participate in the second season of the Futures Basketball League (FBL) 3 on 3 basketball tournament next month.

Dubbed as the 2008 Futures 3-on-3 Baller Battle, the tournament, which will also feature similar tournaments in Davao City for the second time and in Cebu City for the first time this summer, will have 4 categories — mini and midgets for boys and juniors for both boys and girls with the ages adjusted to the categories in the regular FBL basketball tournament.

"When we launched our first 3-on-3 competition last year, it generated a lot of interest and the response was good both in Metro Manila and Davao. That is why we have decided to expand to Cebu which is an acknowledged basketball hotbed in the Visayas." tournament director Tyrone Limon said.

The elimination round of the event will be held at the Xavier RCSC courts in San Juan on Feb. 23 and 24 while the finals will be at the Activity center of Trinoma Mall in Quezon City on March 1 with the deadline for the registration of team entries set on Jan. 31.

Participants will be receiving FBL playing shirts, give-aways from sponsors, and will play a minimum of 3 games per team while the top teams in each category get cash prizes, trophies, and other prizes in kind, added Limon. Play-Offs will be on Saturday, 01 March 2008 at the Activity Area of TriNoma Mall in QC with a mini-concert by the ItchyWorms at 4:30pm prior to the Semi-Finals and Finals.

Cebuana vs Accenture

League leaders Cebuana Lhuillier and Accenture Solutions, with similar 2-0 win-loss records, go up against one another on Sunday, hoping to take the solo lead in the on-going Futures Corporate Classic basketball tournament at the Club 650 gym.

Cebuana Lhuillier, which beat Customer 24/7, 61-47, and Prime Peak, 8859 in its first two games, plays Accenture Solutions, winner over JP Morgan Chase, 82-67, and against Customer 24/7, 69-43, at 3:10 p.m.

Other games this Sunday in the tournament sponsored by Pocari Sweat, Bacchus Energy Drink, Accord Capital, and Club 650, will see Accenture BPO going for its 2nd win after splitting its first two games, against winless Prime Peak at 8:30 a.m. while the other featured game at 9:50 a.m. is between Infonxx (0-1) and Customer 24/7 (0-2).

To heighten the excitement and encourage all the teams to go all out every game, the organizing Futures Sports and Events in factoring in a point differential bonus system which reward teams with bigger margins of victory and after two playing days, Cebuana Lhuillier had already a plus 43 while Accenture Solutions is close behind with its plus 41 point differential bonus.

FBL Caging Set in Bacolod City

Future Basketball League (FBL) will set a tournament for three age-groups divisions basketball tournament either this December or early January 2009, according to Roger A. Banzuela, Bacolod Organizer.

The three age-groups divisions are mini, midget and junior which are equivalent to 8-10 years old for mini, 11-12 year old for midget and 13-14 years old for juniors.

This is the first time the FBL will be held in Bacolod City, Banzuela added, saying that other cities holding the event are Cebu, Manila and Cagayan de Oro.

Nino Sinco is the Managing Director of FBL Sports and Events and also the National Coordinator of FBL, arrive recently in Bacolod City to meet with Banzuela.

However, there is another division that will be contested among the girls’ junior.

Each team in the three divisions shall be composed of eighteen (18) players’ maximum, with fifteen (15) to play. The three extra players should be born 2000 for the Mini, 1997 for the Midget and 1994 for junior divisions.

The girls’junior division the maximum players are 15 and the minimum of 10.

The composition of players in three divisions are; six players born in 2000, 5 players born in 1999 and seven players born in 1998; for midget division, seven players born in 7, four born in 1995 and seven (7) players born in 1998; for boys junior; 7 players who are born in 1994, seven born in 1993 and four players born in 1992. In the girl’ junior division, the players are born in 1992 and younger.

The players in all the divisions should be registered student-athlete of the school supported by a valid certification of registration from the school.

The age requirement should be supported by original NSO birth certificate or Philippine/foreign passport (for presentation purposes) and submitted photocopy of NSO birth certificate passport.

Players who are currently playing for UAAP, NCAA or Cesafi are not allowed to play.

The submission of a team gallery should contain photos of the coaching staff and players of each team and certified by the registrar and athletic director of the school. Only team officials/coaches and players on the team gallery holder shall be recognized by the FBL.

There is no registration fee, but instead, each team must submit twelve (12) empty boxes of Primovit Multivitamins capsules.

FBL '08 starts Nov.15

The Futures Basketball League (FBL) 2008 gets going on November 15 in Davao City, according to organizer Niño Sinco.

He said that Holy Trinity College of Gen.Santos City, last year's second placers in the junior's division, is expected again to see action against the other Davao City-based schools.

Holy Child School of Davao, Stella Maris Academy of Davao, Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High, Nikkei Jin Kai School, Ateneo de Davao, Holy Cross of Davao, Assumption College of Davao, Magallanes Elementary School, Davao Central College, St.Peter's College of Toril, University of the Immaculate Conception and Emar Learning Center are among the teams expected to field squads in the boy's mini, midgets, juniors and girl's juniors divisions of the tournament backed by Primovit, Purefoods, Gatorade and Philips.

i feel bad for our school for not participating this year.. we entered the final4 last year in the 14,15,16 category.. too bad we lost to ust b. ust a defeated dlsz, for an all ust finals.. bad thing is there's no battle for third, we should've faced the dlsz who banners the 6'7 arnold van opstal and dela paz.. to organizers, please send an invitation for us next year,, ;D this league makes me proud of my school varsity.. i remember we beat schools who have players in the NBTC like St jude and HTA.. im from caritas don bosco school. currently 3rd year, so next year if i can still join this tournament.

UST, Adamson lead FBL juniors division

Defending boys’ junior champion University of Santo Tomas streaked to its third straight win by beating Don Bosco Technical Institute, 50-22, to keep the solo lead in Group A of the boys’ juniors division of the 4th Futures Basketball League (FBL) last Sunday.

Letran holds sway in Group B with a 4-0 win-loss slate, the same record of De La Salle -Zobel in Group C while San Beda College -Alabang has beaten all its Group D opponents for a perfect 5-0 record.

In the girls’ side, Adamson University, gunning for another crown this year, also remained on top of the standingsfollowing its 58-48 victory over Sta. Clara for a 5-0 record while San Beda College-Alabang, which beat Colegio de San Agustin, 44-29, is in second at 2-1 together with MISA.

The mini division of the four-month long tournament organized by Futures Event and sponsored by Primovit Multi-vitamins, Gatorade, Bacchus Energy Drink, Purefoods TJ Hotdogs, Accord Capital, and Philip’s Gadgets, had Xavier posting its 4th straight win, defeating Marist, 53-29, to remain on top.

Sta. Clara is just a game behind as itbeat La Salle-Greenhills 39-14 for its third win in as many games while Don Bosco Technical Institute has a 3-1 record after scoring a 30-0 win over Holy Trinity Academy.
