He sure did bulk up this year. Great performance in the opening game!

Arellano is proving to be the big time player of UE. Custodio habitually gets into foul trouble early and is turnover prone while Borboran can't seem to create opportunities for himself and relies too much on his teammates to get him the ball at his sweet spots. Although Arellano missed what could have been the winning shot in regulation, he more than made up for it by sinking the dagger trey in overtime and icing the win with freethrows. Overlooked in the write-ups of the win was starting point guard Labagala who tallied 10 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and an 80% field goal shooting percentage in 24 minutes of play.

Maybe it's right Wang-Bu. Borboran, Custodio and Espiritu are all making extreme efforts this season and it could be one possible reason why we seldom see Arellano on the spotlight like he used to be.
But Arellano is still the dependable 67th season ROY awardee, minsan nga lang he's being 'natatabunan' by his other teammates who are also doing good this season.
And Arellano's game is still good, it's just he is not that so much of a noise-maker like others. Maybe because he also just plays simple and quiet, yet remains to be still a good basketball player. ;)

hello po sa lahat ng nagpopost dito! especially sa mga UEans. Im a new member here and just want to join your topic. Aniway i think Marcy is getting stronger here sa PBL silver cup he's a new player of Sista. Nung opening game they win against Magnolia which, Bonbon, is a player there.*

Marcy Arellano is a good two-way guard who has improved his playmaking skills over the last two years. In his Rookie of the Year season he was one heck of a scorer who was all hustle. Now his game has matured and he has learned that being a decoy is as good as being the gunner. No one can afford to sag off against him to double or help because he can nail the three-ball and/or drive hard into the lane. He's gotten better built as well, putting on lean muscle where it counts, in the upper body and arms so that he can take the beating dished out by forwards and centers.

In order for Marcy Arellano to make it to the next level though he needs to do two things:

First, he needs to figure out how to become a fulltime pointguard. By this I mean he needs to become more of a playmaker and table-setter rather than a shooter / scorer. He's been variously listed as 5-10 to 5-11. I've seen him up close and in relation to other players and he can't be more than 5-9. There is no way he is going to be a combo-guard at 5-9, at least not in the PBA, so fulltime point duties will be his ticket to the next level.

What does he need to become a fulltime pointguard? Well, he needs to get faster and more athletic, as in LA Tenorio fast and athletic, or Johnny Abarrientos fast and athletic. I can already hear a lot of you out there protesting, "But Olsen Racela is the best point in the PBA and he is no where near that level of speed or athleticism!" and you'd be absolutely right. BUT Olsen possesses one of the highest basketball IQ's in the pro ranks. His basketball intellect more than makes up for his lack of natural top-quality athletic ability. He could never win a sprint against LA or Flying A even in his prime, but he sure as hell will hold his own when it comes to running a team and getting that W.

Arellano does not change directions or corner with the quickness and agility of the real pocket rockets. If he has a hard time keeping up with LA how in the world is he going to keep up with the likes of Jay Helterbrand, Jim Alapag, Mike Cortez and Willie Miller, the pointguards he will be going against over the next four to five years if he ever makes the PBA? It is that speed that will keep him out of harm's way against giants like Asi Taulava and Dorian Pena, and give him an edge against bigger and stronger guards. In its absence he will have to get smarter, a lot smarter, Olsen-level smarter. He needs to scout obssesively, watch hours of film on his teammates and opponents so he knows where to deliver that ball and when, as well as to be aware of where everyone else at all times. This was Olsen's edge.

Second, and Jesus H Christ this is far more important, he needs to change his sissy nickname...

With the emergence of young players like Zamar, Reyes and Lingganay, Arellano's role with UE is not that big anymore except from a veteran leader standpoint. However, anyone who saw the game yesterday is probably in doubt if Arellano is really a veteran. He was so tentative the whole game and even committed two crucial turnovers during that last-ditch DLSU rally. To cut the long story short, he played like a rookie yesterday.

Marcy Arellano is averaging over eight points, four rebounds and four assists per game in nearly 25 minutes per outing. Those are DECENT numbers but not great numbers, especially from a fifth-year veteran expected to step up in his last year in the UAAP. Rudy Linganay and James Martinez are getting better numbers than Arellano for the UE backcourt. Martinez is in fact the leading scorer of UE and the only Warrior averaging double figures in scoring. Right behind him at a little over nine points per game each are forwards Elmer Espiritu and Hans Thiele.

When you compare Arellano's numbers to opposing players at his position he is a far cry from the lot of them - FEU's Benedict Fernandez, Lasalle's JV Casio and Ateneo's Chris Tiu are averaging close to 15 points per game, nearly double Arellano's production.

If UE is to have a chance it is Arellano that needs to wake up and carry the cudgels. He isn't demanding the ball in critical situations and he has not been an insurance at the perimeter. Linganay has been a better passer at way less minutes while Martinez has been the best shooter on this team.

When the likes of Martinez, Lee, Reyes, Lingganay and Zamar have all ably manned the 1 nd 2 spots, I wouldn't be worried for UE if Arellano continues to play below expectations.

Imo, napaso na yan si Dindo on relying too much on veteran guards who, by their position, will have the ball in their hands for more minutes than the rest of the team. ::)

Dindo won't force the situation when in fact he has the luxury of a deep rotation who have shown to be very competitive.

I felt that the most critical play for the Warriors was the loose ball foul of Thiele in the last minute. UE was up by 3 when Thiele commited that foul. It could have padded the lead for UE but instead it gave another ball possession for the Blue Eagles.

Marcy had a brillliant game yesterday.

In his final game as a Red Warrior guard Marcy Arellano had zero points on 0-6 shooting from the field and not a single trip to the foul line.

He may go down in UE history as the most underwhelming player ever to wear the red and white.

I certainly hope he isn't even thinking about a PBA career. If I were him I'd hit the books with renewed purpose and just hit the mainstream job market.

Poor kid. Pagbigyan niyo na. He can make it to the PBL, then PBA but he will not be a premier player (for now). Mabe 2nd or third guard off the bench. Maybe he is not made to be a leader. But give him the chance to be a role player.
