PUTTING the nightmarish cage scandal behind, De La Salle University decided to go back to the old and the familiar.

Franz Pumaren was reappointed as head coach of the men’s basketball team as the Green Archers begin their rebuilding process while the university serves its one-year suspension from the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

“The administration reinstated coach Pumaren last week,” La Salle sports development head Br. Bobby Casingal said yesterday.

“There was a search committee, it started last February. We submitted names (of candidates).”

Pumaren, who resigned at the height of the UAAP eligibility scandal last November, already met with the players last week. Official practice will start on Wednesday.

“I told them what will happen with regards to the suspension,” said Pumaren. “It has its downside and upside. But in the long run, it will benefit them. We’ll be able to concentrate on their individual skills and training.”

Calingal said La Salle is still finalizing its sports calendar after the UAAP slapped a one-year suspension on the university in all league events for fielding two ineligible basketball players.

Pumaren noted the team already received invitations to play in international tourneys, including Indonesia, China, Australia and Taiwan.

“We want to keep the boys busy,” said Pumaren, who steered the Archers to five championships in the last eight years.

“We’re reviewing the tournaments we’ll join, whether local or international. We’re assessing the invitations from different countries, the ones that will not affect their classes.”

Still keeping the same staff, Pumaren will be assisted by Tonichi Yturri, Tyrone Bautista, Jack Santiago and Dan Rose in the final two years of his contract.

Any details on his appointment (how long, etc.)?

It's most likely a multi-year appointment, probably 3 years. It would be pointless to appoint him for just a year, as the real challenge is to prepare the Archers for re-entry into the UAAP in a year's time.

Correct me if I'm wrong (rek, etc..), coach Franz will most likely finish out his 3 year contract that he signed. He already finished 1 year so he's still good for 2 more years.

I think Franz is just going to continue his original 3 year contract.

The appointment was supposed to take place last June 01, 2006 with Bro Armin making the pronouncement. I think the original plan was to call for a press conference announcing franz reinstallment but it was delayed and instead they just fed the information to the media... making the pronouncement low key without much fanfare.

Looking back... during the initial phase of the uaap investigation, feelers were made by some in the uaap board seeking for the ouster of franz in exchange for a more lenient resolution of our case. We did not give in and we would rather go on with the investigation than compromise. The rest is history.

Nah, there's history still to be made. What will transpire in the next few months and in season 70 might just eclipse what's happened in the past. At least, we can be sure that the Archers will be well prepared for next year under an experienced coach with an excellent track record.

Funny, those who sent those feelers must be breathing a sigh of relief that we're not participating this year. Just shows you how afraid they are of what Franz and the Archers might accomplish.

History in the making.

Those who sent those feelers for coach's ouster better try to win it all this year. They better make hay while the sun shines.

We will not see a back-to-back or a three-peat champion next year.

With Franz Pumaren back as Head Coach, let's hope Ryan Arana can get his grades back in order so he can help the Archers win another title. Arana is a vital cog in the Archer's rotation. A talented role-playing guy.
