The NU Bulldogs didn’t pick up a win last year until the very last second of their very last game, when then-rookie Jonathan Jahnke hit a wild runner in the lane to give his team a one-point victory over UST.

Chalk it up to inexperience and a lack of talent. Looking at their statistics, it’s a wonder they even won a game. Last season, the Bulldogs gave up the most points per game (83), were the worst-shooting team (33%) the worst freethrow-shooting team (51%), the worst rebounding team (42.6), had the most turnovers per game (25.9), and issued the fewest assists per game (10.6).

Coach Manny Dandan, though, has modest expectations this year, even as he is hopeful his team will surpass their win total last year. The line-up is still basically the same, with only four players gone from last years’ roster, none of whom averaged more than 3.3 points or 14.5 minutes per contest. These were forward Chris Catamora, center Cesar Estolano and guards Jerome Tungkol and Rocky Sanchez.

This basically means NU’s first and second units are all a year older and a year wiser. But does wiser necessarily mean better?

In the case of the Bulldogs’ best player, Edwin Asoro, the coaching staff certainly hopes so. Last year, the six-three Mythical Team member tore up the league with averages of 15.3 points (best in the entire league), 8.7 boards (4th-best), 1.9 steals (2nd-best), and 2.9 blocks (fourth-best), in a superb all-around performance that had many comparing him to some guy named Arwind. Personally, I think Asoro has the chance to become better than Santos, especially since Santos was already 20 when he entered the league in 2002, while Asoro will turn 20 only this year.

Comprising the rest of the first unit are center Howard Flor, shooter Jonathan Fernandez, swingman Dave Catamora and point guard Jason Malcontento. The six-five Flor is a hard worker underneath, good enough to give his team maybe 8-10 points and the same number of rebounds per outing, but he’s not among the elite centers in the league. The good news is that his back-up, second-year man Joseph Lingaolingao, has improved over the offseason. Lingaolingao is a wide-bodied six-five banger with a nice touch from the outside. Together with Flor, they give the Bulldogs a credible rotation at the pivot slot.

Fernandez is a conscienceless gunner who will not hesitate to pull up for a three even with no teammate in sight. The problem, though, is he’s streaky. One day he can shoot the lights out, other times he can’t hit a basket to save his life. Regardless, he will always take an inordinate amount of shots per game. In fact, last season, he had almost twice the number of three-point shots (110) as two-point shots (60), although he made only 31% of them. A longtime UAAP observer made a interesting comment last year on Fernandez’s shooting skills: “Siya ang tanging shooter na hindi maka-shoot.”

Catamora and Malcontento make up a veteran back court who each can provide double-digit points on a good day. If Malcontento can take better care of the ball, the Bulldogs should make their games much closer.

Malcontento’s chief back-up, Jahnke, has also shown marked improvement. The five-nine sparkplug is still feisty as ever and can provide an emotional lift for his team while blossoming into a good defender. Look for him to get on the nerves of opposing point guards. Cyrus Malagueno, meanwhile, is back after an injury-shortened season and is ready to resume his role as a scorer off the bench. Sophomore Michael Salvado, on the other hand, will provide relief at the two and three spots, while Christopher Dela Cruz, another sophomore, is Asoro’s chief back-up at the four spot.

Among the rookies, six-four Bennett Salamat is good enough to give a few minutes’ effort on the frontline and should also find his way into the rotation, even for just a few minutes per contest. Salamat has some promise, but the kid is only 17 years old and his body hasn’t filled up yet.

Rounding up the team are rookie point guards Michael Luy and Julian Cooper, both of whom are not expected to see too much playing time, except maybe in blow-outs.

But with a more seasoned crew around this time, Dandan hopes those blow-out games are a thing of the past.
