EAC and SBC battled on near even terms in the 1st quarter with the score ending at 19-18, EAC up. Manansala led the way for the Generals with 6 points, while Guillermo scored two treys to lead the Red Lions in the 1st quarter.

EAC then outscored SBC in the 2nd, 26-12 to post a 45-30 lead at the half. Ebuen led the charge with 9 points in the quarter, while Guillermo continued his scoring ways with 6 more in the quarter. SBC was plagued with 18 turnovers, which EAC translated to 19 turnover points in the 1st half.

SBC tried to stage a mini rally in the third with eventually fizzled out but cut the EAC lead to 10 by the end of the 3rd, 65-55. Buenafe doused fire on the mini rally by hitting 2 treys and a breakaway slam to score 8 points in the 3rd, while Suguitan imposed his will in the paint with 9 points. Another highlight of the quarter was Taupa's own breakaway 2-handed slam.

SBC rallied furiously, cutting the EAC lead to 2, 74-72 in the final canto. But Hubalde and Buenafe hit treys to finally stop the SBC rally. EAC won 83-78. Musni led the Generals in the quarter with 8 points, while Suguitan continued his scoring ways with 8 points in the last canto.

Topscoring for the Generals were Ebuen 13, Musni 12, Valderrama 12 and Buenafe, who played only in the second half, with 11.

San Beda was led by Suguitan with 17 (all in the 2nd half), Antonio 14, Guillermo 12, Evangelista 9, Taupa and Hermida with 8.

Closed call for the Knights against SSC Cavite. Anyway, does anybody knows if Baustista and Aban played last Saturday for the Knights? Are they in the FMC line up?

Ateneo A had quite a rousing debut against the tough but outclassed NU Bulldogs. Johann Uichico showed quite a lot of improvement, seems the Team B stint did him a world of good. He had two tough jumpers in traffic, hustled and reached for all sorts of loose ball recoveries, and covered Edwin Asoro, Joseph Lingaolingao, Howard Flor and new Bulldog Jo Beri at varying times. Johann will never be mistaken for a star in the UAAP but he's certainly made those who underestimate his heart pay a dear price.

NU Coach Manny Dandan has a solid team for Season 69, but it'll be quite a feat getting his boys all on the same page. They've got the firepower, the size and the athleticism, now all they need to do is play like a team. Ateneo made them pay for their inability to communicate on the floor, generating turnover after turnover. Plus the ridiculous tendency for ticky-tack fouls will bite the Bulldogs where it hurts. Asoro had three first half fouls, as he, Lingaolingao, Flor and Jon Fernandez nearly fouled out with four each.

Baclao plays and looks like Vic Pablo. He also reminds of another ADMU recruit (but didn't push thru due to eligibility issues) Neil Raneses.
Matsumoto is the brightest prospect with his in-control type of game. Bery Hector Calma except for his hesitance to shoot the ball.

April 30, 2006 - Game Day 8

Seniors, Group A

San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) won its second game of the tournament by manhandling University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) defending champion Far Eastern University Team-A (FEU-A), 61-48, behind the virtuoso performance of Viray and the overwhelming power of its frontcourt. Playing without National Students Basketball Championship (NSBC) Most Valuable Player Jeffrey Chan, the Tamaraws relied heavily on point-guard Jonas Villanueva who finished with 13 points but did not get enough help from his supporting cast. The stifling defense of the Stags only allowed the Tamaraws 3 and 11 points in the first two quarters of the game. Viray ended with 17 points, scoring all 10 points of SSC-R in the third quarter. He got ample support from their big men, among them Bulawan who chipped in 9 points. Quarterly scores were 18-3, 34-14 and 44-17.

Adamson (AdU) maintained its clean slate as it came from behind to nip a fading Ateneo De Manila University Team-B (Ateneo-B), 72-63. Down by 5 points, 54-59, with less than a minute to go in the game, the Falcons forced two successive turnovers and connected on a trey and an undergoal stab to force overtime. The stunned Blue Eagles never recovered and scored only 4 points against AdU’s 13 in extra time. Four Falcons finished in double figures led by Hugnatan’s 20 markers, but more importantly, AdU was able to shut down Ateneo-B’s offense at critical points of the game. The Blue Eagles got good performances from Nkemakolam, Dizon, and rookie Baclao who scored 13 points in his second outing for Ateneo-B. Quarterly scores were 13-17, 23-26, 40-42 and 59-59.

Bakit kulang-kulang? There are some games that only have stats for one team. Where are the stats for the past games? Bakit mali-mali? Sample: there are guys credited for points when they don't have any attempts, there are some teams with final scores that are more or less than the sum of the scores of the individual players. Bakit through text lang available ang mga stat leaders? Are the computations for these stat leaders based on your boxscores? Anybody here familiar with the term GIGO?

EAC won a fight-marred game against Letran today. I think the score was 60 - 58. The game ended in the 3rd quarter when Letran decided to forfeit the same. The officials decided to throw out ALL but 4 Letran players because all the Letran players darted to the playing court during the scuffle. Fortunately, Coach Nomar Isla of EAC had the sense of controlling his players and preventing them from leaving their bench. Coach Alas, eventually relaized that it would just be useless to continue the game and so he just decided to forfeit the same.

tHE SCORE was letran 52 eac 50... eac generals's ronjay buenafe sparked the 12 to nothing run. coming from the 1st half run with letran erected a 14 pt lead. it was another amazing rally by the generals which was unfortunately marred by the bench clearing of the knights which eventually led to their decission to forfeit it with less than 4 minutes in the 3rd canto. however, this will not take away the winning streak by the generals who remained unbeaten in group b.... way to go generals!

Hawks in Fr. Martin’s-Nike finals

By FRANK CALAPRE, The Manila Times Correspondent

San Sebastian Colege-Cavite took advantage of Emilio Aguinaldo College’s poor shooting from the stripe to nail down a close 77-74 win Wednesday and claim the first finals slot of the 2006 Father Martin’s Cup-Nike Summer Basketball League at the EAC gym in Manila.

Forward Jerome Cenita scored 28 points, five crucial ones in the last three minutes, to lead the SSC Hawks to the finals against the winner between the University of the East Warriors and Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles.

The Blue Eagles and the Warriors were still disputing the last finals slot at presstime. The one-game championship duel is set at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Mentored by former Crispa Redmanizer Edgar Macaraya, the Hawks shot 69 percent from the free throw line—still much better than the EAC Generals, who wasted 8 tries in the fourth quarter that practically stalled their offense.

The Scores:

SSC-R 77 – Cenita 28, Villareal 12, Bolocon 11, Basa 9, Magdadaro 9, Panes 3, Gracilla 3, Mconociao 2.

EAC 74 – Ebuen 30, Buenafe 14, Musni 9, Valderama 6, Quiambao 4, Hubalde 4, Dedase 3, Baybay 2, Manansala 1, Lapitan 1.

Quarters: 16-18; 36-39; 64-52; 77-74.
