STI COLLEGE OLYMPIANS GAME SCHEDULES

After the Father Martin Cup ended last month the STI College Olympians went back to the gym to "repair" some kinks in their armor.* Coach Vic Ycasiano's wards learned a lot from the other teams and gained a lot of experience from that league. As they prepare for the coming 12th Father Martin's Cup and 6th NAASCU Basketball tournaments they now go up against teams to see if their plays will hold up.* This thread will post the forthcoming activities of the Olympians.

Team Captain Jojo Belano sank 5 three pointers to lead all scorers with 17 pts as he led the STI College Olympians to a 68-53 win over the Jose Rizal Bombers. Its a good start for the Olympians considering its their first game since the last Fr. Martin's Cup last february.* The team is blending well and is poised to do even better in future games.*
Again it was defense that led the way for the run away win by the Olympians.

NAASCU Mythical 5 member Ramon Mabayo provided his usual defense as he complemented Belano's offense by forcing lots of turnovers through his hustle plays and solid defense. >:(

Congratulations Olympians for the good start.

STI and EAC Exhibition Game ends in a stalemate 77-all!

Two years have passed and the STI College Olympians and the EAC Generals are still locked up after another tied ball game. Everyone watching at the EAC gym saw a good fight as booth teams fought tooth and nail in what seemed like a championship match! Well, it seemed like one but it was only a practice game for both teams.

The first quarter was close with the Generals dictating the pace early on. The Olympians then countered with swift plays and good defense as the generals led them 14-13 at the end of the 1st ten minutes. The second quarter saw STI summon the spirit of the gods as it raced to a half time lead of 42-31 through its signature defense that led to easy baskets and an eleven point halftime lead. Coach Vic Ycasiano was pleased with the outcome of the first half.

The second half was a different story as the generals showed the stuff that they are made of as they battled back to come to within three points at the end of the third quarter 62-59.

The fourth quarter saw both teams come up with different spurts as the Olympians and the Generals came up with great defensive gems in making their opponent struggle to get their offense going. With less than a minute to go, Jojo Belano stole the ball and scored on a lay up to give the Olympians a 77-75 lead. The Generals was not able to convert on the ensuing play and fouled Jun Perez of the Olympians for two free throws.* Unfortunately, Perez muffed the two gift shots and the Generals converted with their own two free throws on the other end. The Olympians sued for time and failed to cash in on their last possession.*

Visibly missing was Ronjay Buenafe who is the sparkplug of the EAC Generals. On the other hand Dexter Micutuan, STI’s scoring machine, was also not in the game which evened out the field.*

Coach Vic Ycasiano was still pleased with the outcome since EAC has a proven basketball program and a winning system and leader through Coach Nomer Isla.

STI and NU in tied game

STI College and National University settled for a tie 76-all as both teams played a tune up game to get ready for their respective tournaments. Edwin Asoro led the Bulldogs with help from reliables Jason Malcontento, Cyrus Malagueno and Jonathan Fernandez. Dexter Micutuan and Ramon Mabayo carried the fight for the Olympians with ample support coming from Jojo Belano and Jun Perez.

The tie shows that there is progress in the game of the Olympians as the same team won over them last year with plenty to spare. The OLympians dictated the pace of the game in the first three quarters with costly errors in the endgame that gave the Bulldogs the chance to win. Ramon Mabayo scored the final basket from a pass off Jun Perez with 4 seconds to go.

We've just received word that STI will hold its Pep Rally on Tuesday, July 18 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in preparation for the opening of the National Athletics Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome on Saturday, July 22.* The featured game after the Pep Rally will be the STI Olympians versus the De La Salle University Green Archers.

Well i just got back from Rizal memorial Coliseum and watched the game of the Olympians against the DLSU Green archers.
The first quarter had the Olympians starting like a house on fire and lead at the start by 9 points 17-9.
The Archers courtesy of JV Casio came back and led the first quarter 25-21.

The Olympians and the Archers squared off in a defensive match at the start of the second quarter with the Archers threatening to pull away by the mid point of the 2nd half. The Olympian's rifleman Dexter Micutuan
kept the Olympians in the game by firing 4 consecutive three pointers. The half ended with the Archers now on top by eight.

The second half saw the Archers tighten on defense and translate those stops into baskets as they led by twelve points at one point. But the Olympians summoned the strength of the gods to fight back and move to within four points 64-68 as the Olympian's defense produced numerous Archer turnovers. The Archer's had one final run to take the win 78-71. Dexter Micutuan led the Olympians with 31 points, eight coming from rainbow territory.

Good thing La Salle decided to show up in this activity . . . akala ko allergic sila sa mga PEP Rally!* *:D

For a while, the game looked like an Inter-La Salle tournament since the Olympians had four players who saw action for the De La Salle-Dasmarinas Patriots last school year -- Francis Junatas, Haddi Porto, John Macalma and JR Rosales!* The NAASCU does not require residency from transferees so the ex-Patriot quartet may play immediately.

Any way, it was a good show by the Olympians -- sending a stern warning to the other NAASCU schools to watch out this season!

What the NAASCU is very strict is the age limit. You must be 25 yrs old at the most to be able to still play. The league is still young and some of the notable players who i was told played in NAASCU was Edwin Asoro of University of Makati, Niño Cañaleta & Vladimir Joe of Holy Angels. Some UAAP and NCAA schools are closely watching good players from this league. Other players from UA & NC on the other hand who are still looking for one final gasp try their luck in the teams here. LIke what we talked about, you can actually play 9 years of college basketball you graduated at 16 years old.

But then again we hope that when the league has a solid following like the two other leagues, we can enforce other rules which can make the league a better place to play with.

Ateneo won over STI 69-64
STI erased a 14 Ateneo lead in the fourth quarter as the Olympians relied on the outside sniping of ace gunner Dexter Micutuan. The crucial play came when Rabah Al Hussaini got a rebound from a missed free throw (forgot who shot the FT) and scored on an AND1 play. That put the game beyond reach.

It was a good game nevertheless for the Olympians.

STI COLLEGE OLYMPIANS NIP SSC-R STAGS 62-61

The STI College Olympians bounced back from a 64-69 loss to the Ateneo Blue Eagles with a 62-61 win against the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags at the San Beda Gym. The Olympians relied on the defensive gem of center Darryl Mendoza who blocked the game winning shot of the Stags to give the Olympians their third win in four outings. The Olympians led by five points 62- 57 with 42 seconds left but failed to capitalize in their next two possessions which the Stags converted into four free throws. Unfortunately their last stab at the basket was foiled by Mendoza’s heroics who swatted three stag field goals.

The Stags dictated the tempo of the game with timely hits from Jose Juan and Juanito Quiamco to lead the first quarter 22-18 and the half 40-32. The Olympians came back to life in the third quarter courtesy of their wingmen Haddy Porto and Dexter Micutuan to cut the Stags lead to three as their defense limited the stags to just six points in the 3rd quarter, 43-46. Haddy Porto continued to sizzle in the fourth quarter as he was 3 for 3 from beyond the arc as the Olympians wrested the lead for good and held on to it until the Mendoza’s heroics came along.

STI won against ADNU last Sunday. The NAASCU board will be meeting this friday, only then can we answer if the aformentioned players (Tiongco, Baguio, Mendoza) can play for STI. Nacpil gave his slot for a younger point guard.
Hope they'll be given the nod of the board. If not.. then panay asaran na lang ang gagawin ko the whole season, don sigurado panalo kami! Hahaha :D

Ang issue yata kay Baguio is that he is 25 years old at nagbago yata ng rules ang NAASCU sa age limit.

As for Nacpil, may health problems daw siya kaya nagbeg off na. This was the same reason bakit nung nasa amin siya sa DLSU-D ay di siya naglaro ng NCRAA last season because of health.

@ Mhel

Sana magkaroon ng update regarding this.

In the NAASCU an athlete can be allowed to play as long as he is below 26 years old. In the last planning session they lowered the age limit to below 25. There is nothing wrong with the rule, its just that its too sudden. We are requesting for the effectivity of the rule to be implemented next school year to give time for ALL Naascu schools to adjust.

Since the NAASCU is trying to position itself as the "Third League" expect a lot of changes or updates on league rules in the future. The rules will hopefully protect the players of the league and help put NAASCU members in the Philippine Basketball map. Most of the notable players who came from the NAASCU come only from the University of Manila who we know has a long tradition of good athletes. STI is just trying to put itself in the same boat so anything positive that comes out along the way is already a bonus.

Mahirap magsalita ng hindi pa tapos. anyway I pray dat we sweep the first round so that we'll have to win less in the semis. I mean kung biglang madisgrasya kami (wag naman sana Lord) at least eh mas madali mag final four coz we are currently one win ahead of UM and two wins ahead of AMA.
