Greatest UE Players ever? First of all, who's the greatest Warrior? No brainer. Depending on when you were born, it's a tossup between Robert Jaworski and Allan Caidic. The honorable mentions, and the other greatest players ever to wear a Red Warrior uniform are, for starters:

Rudolf Kutch
Johnny Revilla
Rudy Soriano
Rudy Distrito
Jerry Codinera

Bahala na kayo sa current era.

My memory fails me at this time...but I recall that Crispa took in a lot of UE players. Was Rey Franco and Rey Pages also products of UE? Help.

Yup.

Si Carpio yes. Nag Crispa nga siya and he was one of my favorite players then. Very effiicient power forward.

In the Caidic vs. Jarencio shootouts of the 80's, I always rooted for Caidic simply because I found his demeanor more subdued than Jarencio. I consider him one of the best pure shooters at every level of the game. Unfortunately, a number of people, myself included, feel that he's underachieving at Ginebra. At least he's calling the shots at the professional level already, while Jarencio finally gets a break many feel is undeserved and immediately displays his professionalism by exchanging hand gestures with his opponent's fans during his second game as a coach of UST.

I think Caidic was doing the "catch-and-shoot" even before that term was coined....he was that quick with his release, automatic two or three points na when he's on a hot streak.....

How about the living legend, Father of all "gulangs" and to the anti-Ginebra crowd damatand's Robert Bobby Jaworski. He is a hardcore hardknock Player who likes to mix it up with the big guys.

Anybody who has ever seen the Big J play either hates him or loves him. He has this effect of polarizing people, but everybody recognizes the extraordinary talent of the man for the game. I was among the anti-Ginebra crowd in the 80's simply because of my contempt for him and I was so ashamed at the time that one of the prized possessions of my beloved mother, which included my medals from school, was an autographed black and white photograph of Jaworski as a Toyota rookie.

Elder members of my family never considered Jaworski as the best to come out of UE. There were varying opinions... Rudy Soriano, Rudolf Kutch and Caidic are mentioned often. But not Jaworski.

Though everyone agrees that the man was a class by himself. At different times in his career he was the country's best rebounder, best in assist, highest scoring average.

There was one observation made by my grandfather w/c to me was the true measure of Jawo. That was when his adversaries from Crispa eventually played for him at Anejo/Ginebra. When Cezar and Hubalde played for him, and even Fabiosa aspired for a spot in his team, my old man said, " Ano ang masasabi mo sa isang tao na nilapitan ng ang dating kalaban at tinanggap?".

Knowing the animosity and hate that exist between Crispa and Toyota, personalan na yung away na yun, who would ever imagine that Cezar and Hubalde would later play under Jawo.

Jaworski was not considered a talented basketball cager back then. My father was able to watch him during his NCAA and MICAA days. He was more of a defensive player and a role player. No offensive skills to boast. His 3-point accuracy only came during his PBA career. He was more noted for his "gulang". He is well-appreciated because a big-guard who can bring down a ball was a rarity during those days.

Wala akong kilalang ibang player na ganun ang star power at charisma, as in ibang klase talaga. Siya lang ang nakita kong talagang kayang mag-point guard to center all in the same game na walang kahirap-hirap.

Speaking of Lefties, UE seems to have a knack for discovering them, I believe the Brothers Villarias - Vern and Vic - were both lefties.

And speaking of shooters, aside from Mariano, Caidic and the Villarias Boys, how about Wowie Ibanez, Jun Catalan, Olan Omiping and James Yap, gunners to the core.

During Allan Caidic's time, the only player who got considerably the same publicity was Gerry Codiñera. Hot and promising recruits and the supporting cast, though played up nonetheless withdrew back to the shadows made by the two Warrior stars. One of them was 6-2 Conrado Barile, a promising slasher/ mid-range shooter and very athletic 2-3. Didnt last long as a Warrior and made little impact in the PBL, as far as I remember. Wasn't he considered for the Youth team too?

Ruel Buenaventura had his last foray into mainstream basketball via a brief stint with the MBA's Casino Cagayan de Oro Amigos in 2002. After the MBA folded up in the middle of the year, he played for Casino Alcohol in the weeklong Manila leg of the 2002 PBL-CBF Dual Meet. These days, Buenaventura is a barangay kagawad in his hometown in Rizal.

Raymond Soto was last seen by the public with Forward Taguig of the NBL in 2003. He now runs several businesses in Manila and Bulacan.

Arnold Booker is currently recovering from a knee injury he sustained last year while preparing to play for Far East Insurance in the last PBL Heroes Cup. He should be in the final stages of his recovery by now.

This year's UAAP Opening Palabas on July 8 should be one to watch out for the followers of this thread because host UE has invited several of its famous Red Warrior alumni led by Coach Virgilio "Baby" Dalupan and players Sonny Jaworski, Jimmy Mariano, Allan Caidic, Jerry Codinera and many others who have brought honor to the school.

Ferdinand Ravena was one of the special guests at the UAAP Opening. By the way, the title clash with DLSU was in 1990 (Season 63).

I guess typo lang. Season 63 was when DLSU got its three-peat (2000)

^ I think Anthony Servinio mentioned in some other Forum hereabouts that Olan Omiping is playing in one of the smaller province-based leagues. I don't know what it is about that kid, why no one in the PBA seems keen on him considering every team is always looking for a shooter. Omiping has plus range, doesn't need much sighting to launch a shot, can play off either hand and moves very well without the ball, assets a lot of PBA teams are always looking for.

Ollan Omiping just joined the Philippine National Police (PNP), in fact he just finished his basic training and will be given a rank and commission very soon. I say that's a very noble and laudable move by him.

* * *SINCE he has a college degree, RJ Masbang was able to land a job with Allied Bank and represented the bank in a league playing against employees of other banks.* If he will not make the roster, I will not be surprised if he lands an office position at Air 21.

playing for a team in PICAA and danny espiritu cup. saw him once wowing the crowd at the RTU gym with his trademark hang time moves. IIRC, he is playing in a team which also boasts of al vergara, jerwin gaco, larry rodriguez, chico lanete and a big slew of NBC, ex pros and notable PBL players completing the lineup

Speaking of All-Timers, and for all the Val Acuna and Elmer Espiritu fans: ASEAN Basketball League Season 1 Finals Game 1 is set for this Friday at the Ynares Center along Shaw Blvd in Pasig at 6:00 PM. Come and support the Philippine Patriots as they gun for the inaugural championship of the ABL against a very tough Satria Britama Indonesian team. Miller and Hartman, the Satria imports, are 24-karat a--holes who need to be put in their place, so please come out and support our Patriots.
