Open division ang napagkasunduang laro, no minors and seniors (citizen) allowed.

Did anybody stay up late until the wee hours of yesterday morning to watch on cable tv the farewell match of Andre Agassi's 21-year tennis career?

As early as the first set, I had a feeling that this would be Andre's last match as his aging body, not his desire to win, could not keep up with strong serves and ground strokes of his younger opponent Benjamin Becker (no relation to the great tennis legend Boris). After the obligatory hand shakes with his foe and the umpire, Andre broke down in tears after he took his seat. I'm sure not an eye was dry at Arthur Ashe stadium that afternoon.

No regrets for me though to see the match through until the very end despite the foregone conclusion. The crowd (including millions who watched all over the world) witnessed and heard what could become a classic farewell speech in the annals of sports. It may not be as memorable as the late New York Yankee great Lou Gehrig's "I consider myself the luckiest man in the face of the earth" speech, but it should be the most heartfelt speech eloquently delivered despite the emotions flowing in such a momentous occassion.

Let me quote below this short but eloquent speech (culled from espn.com):

Agassi's Farewell Speech
Andre Agassi's on-court speech to the crowd after the final match of his pro career, a loss to Benjamin Becker in the third round of the U.S. Open on Sunday:

"The scoreboard said I lost today, but what the scoreboard doesn't say is what it is I have found.

"And over the last 21 years, I have found loyalty. You have pulled for me on the court and also in life. I've found inspiration. You have willed me to succeed sometimes even in my lowest moments.

"And I've found generosity. You have given me your shoulders to stand on to reach for my dreams, dreams I could have never reached without you.

"Over the last 21 years, I have found you. And I will take you and the memory of you with me for the rest of my life.

"Thank you."

-- The Associated Press

From a talented but brash teen-age brat, Agassi has metamorphosized into tennis' venerable senior statesman.

Farewell and more power to your future endeavors, Andre!

May your career and persona be an inspiration to all athletes.

Isang walang kinalaman sa basketball.

Patay na pala si Steve Irwin. And because of his death, now we know how dangerous stingrays are.

Tanging ina nilang lahat.

According to an Israeli Intelligence report :

“Lebanese Security” Is the Pretext for the Naval Babel around Lebanon’s Shores

DEBKAfile Exclusive Military Report

September 4, 2006, 11:37 AM (GMT+02:00)

The extraordinary buildup of European naval and military strength in and around Lebanon’s shores is way out of proportion for the task the European contingents of expanded UNIFIL have undertaken: to create a buffer between Israel and Hizballah.

Close investigation by DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources discloses that “Lebanese security” and peacemaking is not the object of the exercise. It is linked to the general anticipation of a military clash between the United States and Israel, on one side, and Iran and possibly Syria on the other, some time from now until November

Schumacer's retirement marks the end of an era. When a great sportsman retires it is always a day of sadness for millions of sports fans as well as for the world of sports in general. Ali, Pele, Nicklaus, Magic, Mosconi, Bannister, Namath, Gretsky and many other athletes defined their respective sports, their respective eras. So when they finally called it a career it was both a celebration of their respective sports, as well as a eulogy for an era of greatness. Their contributions not just to their disciplines but to humanity's neverending search for excellence in all fields has made them immortal.

It is with all this in mind that gameface.ph waves the last chequered flag to the greatest racer of all time, Michael Schumacher.

meron din elorde gym sa eastwood. they took over the boxing facilities of Pinnacle.

mangtsito

^ Yung sa Elorde's Katipunan, kumpleto ang gamit, I could count 4 speedballs, 3 punching bags, 3 floor/ceiling balls, at least one teardrop-shaped punching bag, some punching bags I dunno how to categorize, some basic weights equipment, mats for stretching exercises, jumpropes, and one boxing ring in the middle of everything. P200 per session, P500 annual fee, P300 sparring fee.

The place is large enough to allow you to jog around the ring unobstructed by the other gymgoers. The shower rooms are small but clean. You can buy gatorade, water, and even some snacks at the front desk (which is actually positioned at the back). No lockers though. You can just leave your bags at the frontdesk.

The best thing about this gym is that the training is really one on one. Hindi ka iiwanan ng trainer mo. Marami sila.

Correction: the best thing about this gym are the pretty and well-toned boxer chicks. ;)

=========

The one at Pinnacle is air conditioned and has fewer equipment. The fees are P250 per session and P500 annual. If you are looking for a hardcore boxing gym, this is NOT it. There are only 3 trainers at the most at peak hours.

Rangers just started their season with a 5-2 win against the Capitals. Jagr, inheriting the C from Messier, scored after just 29secs. Brendan Shanahan scored 2 goals. If you ask me, they got Shanahan 10 years too late. They should have gotten him to fill in the line of Gretzky years ago.

Our Yankees are back in the playoffs. Given the fates that befell my favorite teams this year (Brazil and Ateneo), I'm trying not to get too excited. Is it going to be the Yankees of 1996 to 2000 when they won 4 of 5 WS, or will it be the Yankees of the past 5 years that did everything but win the big one?

Let's go Yankees. Let's go Rangers.

5FootCarrot

Haha, jkad, I was thinking of posting "LET'S GO RANGERS" on this thread ;D

I read about the Rangers game just a couple of hours ago and I, too, am glad that they're off to a flying start. Before, I would have had doubts about giving Jagr the C, but in last season's playoffs he did his darnedest to show me that he wasn't a prima donna so I'm cool with him leading the charge this season. May he bring our boys to the promised land.

Congratulations to Brendan Shanahan (another of my all-time faves) for reaching the 600-goal mark :)

Let's go Rangers! Let's go Yankees!

here is proof, via a song, that one can be his own grandfather. if you know this, chime along...

I'M MY OWN GRANDPA

I was married to a widow, who was pretty as can be.
This widow, had a grown-up daughter,
Who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law,
And really changed my life.

Now my daughter was my mother,
Cause she was my father's wife.
And to complicate the matter,
Even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad,
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad.
For, if-if he were my uncle, then that also made him brother.
Of the widow's grown up daughter, who was of course, my stepmother.

Father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run,
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue.
Because although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too.

Now, if my wife is my grandmother, I am her grandchild, yeah.
And every time I think of it, heh! Nearly drives me wild.
Cause now I have become, the strangest case you ever saw,
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpaw.

Oh I'm my own grandpaw.
I'm my own grandpaw.
It sounds funny I know, but it really is so,
Oh I'm my own grandpaw.
I'm my own grandpaw.
I'm my own grandpaw.

It sounds funny I know, but it really is so,
I'm my own grandpaw.

Krazy George claims he invented the 'Wave' (http://www.gmanews.tv/breakingnews.php?id=18819)

Article posted October 26, 2006, 8:28 am
OAKLAND, Calif. - Krazy George Henderson has spent the last quarter-century trying to persuade everyone that he debuted the "Wave" during an Oakland Athletics' playoff game against the Yankees — not those Washington football fans who claim the Huskies first performed the now famous cheer.

Debate aside, the Wave is 25 years old and still going strong.

"It's been really interesting," Krazy George said in a phone interview from his home in New Rochelle, N.Y. "I see it at the Olympics. There's a video of Fidel Castro doing it. If it had actually originated in New York at a Yankees game, they would have thought it was sent by the gods."

Krazy George, now 62, says he spent three years perfecting the Wave. He first pulled off the move — in which fans take turns, by section, standing up and waving their arms — on Oct. 15, 1981, at the Yankees-A's AL championship series game in the Coliseum. Washington, meanwhile, did it two weeks later, on Oct. 31.

Former Husky yell leader Robb Weller had returned to campus for a homecoming game against Stanford. He began a vertical version of the Wave in the '70s, but first did the horizontal Wave that day.

Officials at Washington acknowledge Krazy George as being first, but what they are certain of is that the Huskies popularized the cheer. It soon caught on at a
Seattle Seahawks game, too.

It took a year and a half, according to Krazy George, for the Huskies to fess up that they'd seen the Wave on television and given it their own twist. Good thing, too, because he has the proof on tape: The Wave was part of the A's 1981 highlight video shown to potential season ticket holders for the following year.

"That's the best-kept lie in the last 25 years. But now, most of the world recognizes me," Krazy George said. "Their theory is that they came up with it in 30 seconds! 'Oh, we just thought it up.'

"They kept doing it the whole football season and of course they were a big national football power with a big budget. I tell everyone to call Seattle and get their side of the story. It's like a war with me."

Krazy George, known best by that name and for pounding his drum in stadiums across the United States, is a California native who moved north to Napa from Southern California at age 17. He left for New York three years ago.

A former high school shop teacher, Krazy George's lone job the last 30 years has been as a for-hire cheerleader — working all of about three hours a week. Yes, that's it. He averages one game every seven days.

In that first Wave game, the Yankees eliminated the A's 4-0 to reach the World Series. Dave Righetti, now the San Francisco Giants' pitching coach, was the winning pitcher. A crowd of 47,302 was on hand for the first Wave.

"We put it on the map in 1981," said Shooty Babitt, a rookie on the '81 A's. "A lot of people wish the Wave would go away now. A lot of people don't understand when you should do it. ... The new-age fan doesn't understand where the Wave originated. But Krazy George still looks the same today as he did 25 years ago."

Krazy George is a well-known figure at sporting venues, especially in the Bay Area. Mostly bald with blond curls above his ears, he wears his striped athletic socks pulled up and always has a drum in hand.

He has been featured in national magazines and TV programs and has several upcoming interviews with international publications.

That game in Oakland was the biggest crowd yet for Krazy George, who had tried the cheer a couple of times at high school rallies.

A simpler version originated at San Jose State several years earlier. Krazy George would call for the three student sections to chant — one word for each group — "San!" "Jose!" "State!" He would point to each section signaling those students' turn.

He also did something similar for the former Colorado Rockies hockey team, using "Go! Rockies! Go!" But it didn't work so well with only 5,000 fans in the seats many nights.

He knows there are plenty of fans out there who refuse to participate or become grumpy when their view of the game gets briefly blocked.

"There are always a few people," he said.

So, in an era when fads tend to fade quickly in sports, fashion and technology, why has the Wave stood the test of time?

"As a professional cheerleader, I know why I do it: What it does is intensify the energy of the crowd," Krazy George said. "It's almost like an accomplishment. It's their own competition, like a contest or video game. You have to participate to make it work. It takes 95 percent of fans doing it to make it great."

Krazy George says he last got into it with Washington about the Wave before the 20th anniversary. Over the years, he has called the university's athletic director and president, not to mention newspapers and TV stations.

The way things are going, the Wave will carry on long enough for the lore to continue.

"You can start a wave but nobody can stop one," Krazy George said. "The only way it stops is if something exciting happens on the field." - AP

Smackdown last saturday, rockred the house to say the least. Those who watched it saw a very happy, overwhelmed and a more human side of the undertaker. It was quite a sight to see 'taker quite overwhelmed by the crowd before him. He sat down in the steps for a good minute or two after his match to immerse himself in the moment, he then raised his left hand in a clenched fist just before he exited the ramp.

When batista was being beaten by Finlay, booker and Regal during his championship match, everyone was shouting lashley but it was the deadman who rushed to the ring to help, much to the delight of the fans. While Batista was in the middle of the ring flexing his muscles and patting his Philippine flag tattoo to the crowd, I noticed taker quietly heading backstage, goofing around with one of the wwe crew as if he wanted to spar with the guy. Mababaw na ko kung sa mababaw but that for me spoke in volumes. ;D

The only regret that evening is that they didn't sell the d-ex hoody found in wweshop.com. Overall, it was a great 3 hours of sports entertainment.
Paging Vince McMahon, come back soon! :)

Aside from the ticket prices na medyo may kataasan nga, what compounded that embarssing view on TV is that, there are still too many matches being played at the same time. Aside from the TV table there are 6 other tables.

Aficionados move from one table to another. Unless dikitan ang laban, iikot ang mga nanonood to get a glimpse of the players in action.

But, then, the pairings at the TV table has always been a subject of disccussion since 1999.

Though, there is one "very audible" difference in this years coverage compared to that at Taipei and Cardiff -- masyadong maingay ang background. I would take that to mean na maraming "activity" sa venue, pero di lang kita sa TV.

With that, paniwala ko talaga nanduon ang mga tao sa ibang mesa na mas maganda ang laban. Kahit nakatayo basta maganda ang laban, magtitiyaga ang Pinoy.

agree. clubber's power will make him competitive in the early rounds, maybe score a flash knockdown, but in the later rounds drago's superior conditioning ang better discipline will gnaw away at clubber's defense.

Part of Clubber's game is intimidation. How can he intimidate someone bigger and stronger than he? Parang Holyfield/Lewis vs.Tyson in the real world.

One thing about fight scenes in the movies.... In the real world, if those Hollywood haymakers DID hit, boxing matches would only last a few seconds. Another gem of an observation from..... Mad Magazine.* *:D

the mods may decide to transfer this to the Basketball on the Silver Screen thread, but another discussion my friends and i love to dwell on over alcohol is - how would our marquee high school teams match up against the hickory huskers of jimmy chitwood?

chitwood can probably burn any opposing defender but if we double or triple team him, limit his touches, we take away half of hickory's offense. ogie menor though probably has the size and speed to play decent one-on-one defense on him.

the key factor, though, is that hickory has only 8 players, and that would spell trouble when facing a full-court pressing team like the blue eaglets.

bottom line, put together a bunch of basketball junkies and plenty of alcohol, and you'll have the weirdest but most interesting basketball debates.

For a while I thought you were referring to chess.* ;)

A search in the web will give us the following definition of sport/s :
"A physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively." or
"An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively."

Billiards, in both instances, fit both definitions.* In billiards, the need for strength, stamina, or speed may not be pronounced. They are however necessary if one aspires to become a successful cue artist. Strength is needed to break the balls at the onset. Stamina is necessary for cue players who play racks and games in succession. And speed? A player doesn't necessarily have to run around the pool table, but applying speed control on the cue balls will often help you pocket the balls and win games in the process.

Yes, it's a game where one can openly smoke and drink* while playing. But isn't it that one can also smoke and drink while playing basketball? Ahehehe.... Namimilosopo lang po...;D

we are ending our asian games campaign on a high note, with bantamweight joan (pronounced ho-wan) tipon capturing the gold medal with a masterful victory against a hopelessly overmatched korean opponent. we now have three gold medals and a slew of silver and bronze medals. violito payla earlier won the country's second gold medal when he outpointed the thai favorite in the flyweight division. also, cecil mamiit won for the country its first asian games medal in tennis in 40 years. all in all, our stint was par for the course, except for the disappointments in bowling and 8-ball.

some bowls have conference agreements... ex. the Emerald Bowl pits a Pac-10 team vs an ACC team. certain teams also have agreements, like Notre Dame or navy (if Navy's eligible, the Menieke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte will reserve a spot for them)

nahihirapan ang duke dahil wala na sina jj redick at shelden williams. jj redick's outside threat allows shelden to operate inside as a low post threat or as an offensive rebounder, while shelden's inside mastery frees up jj for the open jumpers behind the three point arc. pero mahaba-haba pa ang conference season, marami pang games ang susunod. and of course, they save their best for march.

as far as greg oden is concerned, hindi ko pa sya napapanood. but if the attending hype suggests that he's as good as dwight howard coming out of high school, then he's a lottery pick (perhaps the tope overall pick) in the 2007 NBA draft. he's still suffering from an injury in his right wrist, so he's forced to shoot left-handed this early in the season. still he was good for 24 points and 15 rebounds in a winning effort against the tennessee vols, which is more famous for producing peyton manning of the indianapolis colts, the best quarterback in the NFL today. here is the game account: http://ohiostatebuckeyes.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/011307aab.html

Dahil binanggit na rin ang football...

Today --- January 12 at 5:30pm live sa Star Sports, PHILIPPINES vs Malaysia. Group A match sa ASEAN Football championship.

By watching the live coverage, I consider it my own little way of supporting our National Football Team.

GO AZKALS !

I've read that the team captain, Ali Borromeo, is out for the rest of the tourney due to knee injury.

Which should make the Azkals fight more.

GO 'PINAS!

tama ka diyan, oca...coach is aris caslib - san beda red booters coach. from what i heard, a number of players in the team comes from the red booters.
Final Score:

MALAYSIA 4
PHILIPPINES 0* *:(

GO TEAM PILIPINAS!* *;D
>:(* BEAT THAILAND!

Siguro kasi may oras din ang laro sa volleyball (I mean the time on the watch) kaya pag tumawag sila ng timeout eh hindi kasama sa oras ng paglalaro yun. ;D

Going to NFL playoffs naman, it's going to be the Patriots and Colts for the AFC championship while it's the Bears against the Saints for the NFC championship. Peyton Manning did a good job in beating a defensive oriented team yesterday in the mold of Baltimore.

Sa on-going ASEAN football championships naman tayo hehehe, ang sakit sa mata ng mga talo natin, especially against Thailand last night, before 30 minutes ng 1st half e 3-0 na ata ang score. I believe na kaya naman natin mag-excel dito eh. Kailangan lang siguro ng pondo and other outlet/competition na puede salihan. Kudos to coach Aris for keeping this team in fighting mode.

Ibang klase VA Tech ah, they stunned both Duke and North Carolina. If I'm not mistaken VA Tech is part of ACC also right? They are making a strong run going to March Madness. Is it the AP ranking or the ESPN ranking?

It's often been said in the past that football is one sport we can excel in, but up to now, we've remained stagnant. Like in most Filipino sports, there is no development program or funding to introduce world class training at the grassroots level. If ever we want to get anywhere, there's not substitute for developing the right fundamentals in the youth. Or, if there is one, it's not working.

Importing Fil-foreigners to play on the national team is strictly a stop-gap measure, and will only help us in the very short term. If they're not available to join the team for a tournament, we're still stuck with homegrown players, who sadly are not up to the international skill level. We got beaten by Malaysia and Thailand by identical 4-0 scores. With the current setup, we'll only manage to win over the regional minnows who are at our level. It seems that our sports leadership (like the BAP) are content to keep us where we are, at the bottom of the international sports ladder.

Fearless forecast: we'll remain where we are as long as our sports associations are under the leadership of people who are more interested in maintaining their so-called leadership positions rather than truly working to bring the Philippines out of the 3rd world of sports. It's simple: ask our so-called leaders what their long-term development plan is, how they will bring it down to the grassroots level, who will spearhead the programs (hopefully they really know what they're doing), and how they will get funds to pay for the program. The only programs I remember that seemed to work were those under Michael Keon for track & field, and basketball under Danding Cojuangco, and sadly they are no longer actively involved in charting the future of Philippine sports.

I propose that we use the following as our yardstick to measure our sports leaders if they have the: long term vision to improve the state of our sports, guts to initiate changes, endurance to keep going over several years (hey, those who think this can happen overnight or even in the space of a year are dreaming!), and financial clout to get the required funding from the private sector (forget government as a source of funds).

Patriots vs Colts- I'm picking Brady and co. to win. Amazing that New England has only lost once in the playoffs with Brady at QB. They'll find a way to beat the Colts and Peyton Manning somehow, unless former Patriot Adam Vinateri somehow steals the game for the Colts in the 4th quarter.

Bears vs Saints- Depends on which Rex shows up. If it's the good version (early this season) then Chicago will advance. If it's the terrible one (past few weeks), then Brees, Bush and Co. will advance to their first ever Super Bowl game, and Chicago will be looking for another QB this off-season.

new england's tom brady is once again channeling the legendary joe montana deep in the playoffs. in contrast, indianapolis's peyton manning must be thanking his lucky stars that the colts are playing the kind of smashmouth defense his head coach was originally known for. so is it new england's precision offense or indianapolis's bullying defense in the AFC finals? kutob ko peyton will finally get to the super bowl after years of playoff disappointments. sana...

i agree, rex grossman has been wildly inconsistent directing the bears offense of late. it's clear his confidence is shot, so i think head coach lovie smith will rely more on his running game against the saints. on the other hand, new orleans has been impressive in their use of multiple sets (or the use of multiple receivers or running backs designed to confuse the defense). multiple sets + reggie bush = saints victory. sana ulit... ;D

Remember that it was Tom Brady and his Patriots who always served as roadblock to Manning and his Colts.

As for the other series, I agree it will all depend on Rex Grossman's play, kung sablay laro niya, expect the Saints to enter the Super Bowl pero kung otherwise, dikit ang laro.

If Drew Brees is successful in leading the hard-luck New Orleans franchise into the Super Bowl this season, then San Diego should be wondering if they made the right choice in letting him walk as a free agent last year. No disrespect to Philip Rivers (who performed well this year), but imagine if the Chargers had TWO potential MVPs in their line-up, with Tomlinson and Brees still together. Brees is only 2 years older than Rivers, so there's no big age gap between the two QBs, even if Brees is 5 inches shorter.

I know it would have been hard to keep LT and Drew together for the next few years with the salary cap restrictions of the NFL, but there would have always been a question of what if? they still had Brees as their QB against New England last weekend, could they have been able to advance to the next round* ???

Bennie Bangag

as a longtime NFL fan, i think i'm just happy that san diego made it to the playoffs, period. they were an entertaining bunch back in the days of dan fouts and kellen winslow senior--his son, kellen junior, is now a tight end for the cleveland browns--but they hardly ever got to the bonus rounds.

they had a good run this year because of the season-long brilliance of out-of-this-world running back ladainian tomlinson, but they fell short against tom brady and the pats. and you know tom brady, you get a feeling he's sleepwalking during the first half of the season, and then just like lighting an imaginary switch, he becomes the 3-time super bowl winner of yore delivering a performance worthy of a super bowl. i know that loss stung the chargers more than anything else, but they've got to keep plugging along now that are forging their own winning tradition. question is: will it still be marty schottenheimer as head coach? kalat na kalat ang balita that he will be fired or kicked upstairs.

as far as drew brees is concerned, he made the most of the situation in new orleans. he had a new coach and his host city was just glad they didn't skip town like the NBA's hornets. kaya ibig sabihin, hindi ganun kataas ang expectations sa kanya at sa team--walang ka-pressure-pressure sa kanila. as a result, they played loose, relaxed, and relished the role of being the league's party pooper. soon the wins started piling up, and drew brees quarterbacked the saints to a career-high in season yardage and touchdowns. and he was joined by reggie bush, a gifted, lightning-quick rookie from USC whose main talent is making tacklers miss.

all in all, i think it worked for the best of both parties.

that saints offense gained the most amount of yards in the nfc. simply because they have both a running game and a passing game...

I, too was a 49er fan until nung umalis na si Steve Young sa game. Wala nang naging matinong QB ang 49ers. They are even one of the worst teams in the NFL after this regular season.

Regarding Drew Brees let go situation, kailangan na sigurong mamili din ng Chargers because of their age gap, hindi naman puedeng may magtagal na isa sa kanila sa bench, may aalis at aalis din talaga and the Chargers made its choice by picking Rivers. Let's see if Vinatieri can do his late game heroics in Indianapolis. Siya ang game savior ng Pats lagi before in their playoff apprearances.

Pre wag ka magagalit hehe, if we are talking of superstar calls dito, tingin ko Wade and Kobe are getting the lion's share of this case. But Kobe did a good job yesterday defending Wade in the 4th and in OT. FEU beat Ateneo 2-1 in Season 67, ADMU's only loss that year, and then today's loss makes it 2 in the past 2 years and 1 game. Ateneo won 10 games and drew 1 last year, and yes DLSU prevented the 14 game win streak but they only drew with Ateneo 0-0.

There will be two African-American coaches in Super Bowl XLI. Will Peyton get his coveted silverware? Mas exciting itong laban ng Pats and Colts. The Pats were leading most of the way until the Colts caught up in the 2nd half including the game winning touchdown to seal the AFC championship. Sayang season ni Drew Brees.

LivELY: Coming Together for Ely Buendia
By Jim Ayson
Tuesday, 23 January 2007

You might as well have been living under a rock for the past two weeks if you hadn't heard all about the drama involving Ely Buendia, once the frontman for the legendary 90's supergroup the Eraserheads, since then the Pupil of his new band's eye. That's right, the heart attack (at the ripe young age of 36) in the midst of a gig, the twin angioplasties, the unwarranted charges of drug use (by rock icon Mike Hanopol of all people), the denials, the talk show guestings, the recovery, the text messages from well wishers, and the hospital visits by Francis M bearing trans-fat laden Krispy Kremes.

Sensationalism aside, less talked about are the grimmer aspects of surviving a cardiac arrest in this country: The paralyzing medical bills involving the procedure, confinement, and subsequent health care. Forget the veneer of the rock star life - in the real world, people who get very sick pay very expensive hospital bills, and in the absence of the cushion of health insurance, even so-called rock stars need a hand to get back on their feet.

The bills are nothing to sneeze at. We bumped into Pupil bassist Dok Sergio recently, and he let on that the cost of the first confinement at Asian Hospital, where Ely was first taken to, and underwent his first angioplasty to treat a blocked artery, was already pretty substantial. That bill alone was easily over 700,000 pesos. On top of that, Ely underwent a second angioplasty at the Heart Center of Asia. You can imagine that the bill has probably hit well over a cool million after that.

Factor in post-op recovery and rehab costs, plus medication and it all adds up even further. Ely might have struck an invincible figure on stage at one point, but in this instance he definitely needs help just to get back on track.

This fact hasn't been overlooked by his friends in the music circles he calls home. And so a group of them have banded together to put together a benefit show - for the benefit of their friend and fellow musician Ely Buendia. Billed as "LivELY" the show will feature 20 bands. Admission is free.

We first heard about the project from Dindin Moreno, drummer of Parokya ni Edgar on Saturday, January 20. He mentioned a free show on Sunday. January 28 at the Eastwood Central Plaza, at Easywood City complex in Quezon City. Dindin passed my mobile number to Rico Blanco of Rivermaya, who confirmed that Rivermaya was very much in the loop. Radio station Magic 89.9 TM is involved - the show will take place right outside its outdoor gazebo/booth at Eastwood, and will be aired live as the event takes place from 4pm in the afternoon till evening.

And how will this help Ely? As of this writing, the plan is to pass the hat. It's a free show, but people are encouraged to donate money to help defray Ely's medical expenses. There will be designated sections around the performance area where people can make their donations.

For the well wishers who rooted for Ely to get out of the ICU, that task has been pretty much accomplished. Getting him out of the financial bind of those debilitating hospital bills is the next hurdle.

The musician community is pulling together to get one of their own back on his feet. Hopefully, the fans will continue to show their support. Musicians in this country may not be as amply compensated as their counterparts in other countries. But hopefully they can continue to count on the support of the fans who enjoy their music.

What:
LivELY: A Benefit Concert for Ely Buendia (complete band list to be announced)

Where:
Eastwood Central Plaza, Eastwood City, Quezon City (free admission)

When:
Sunday, January 28, 4pm onwards.

Command:
Be there or be square

Mabalik tayo sa Super Bowl.

Super Bowl marriage proposal, anyone?

There is this guy who has been trying to raise US$2.00 Million to get a 30-second Super Bowl advertising spot. When his online fund raising fell short, he got the services of a publicist who saw an opportunity. They are now in talks with corporate sponsors. Abangan.

super bowl 41 is fast shaping up to be one of the most-talked about NFL championship games in history because of its multitude of storylines and subplots. will peyton finally win his first vince lombardi trophy? will this year's chicago bears finally be exalted on the same level as walter payton, jim mcmahon, the refrigerator, steve mcmichael, and all those who danced to the super bowl shuffle in 1985? will adam vinatieri, now the colts' kicker, put his golden leg to use and hammer the nails on the bears' coffin the same way he did when he was with the new england patriots?

for me, though, the most compelling story line is still the rise of two black head coaches to the top of their profession and the ties that bind them along with many other current head coaches in the NFL. yes, it's about the colts' tony dungy and the bears' lovie smith and their super bowl summit and how this represents a watershed event in professional sports and race relations in the states. what's more striking for many observers is how they led on the sidelines with so much class and dignity--no yelling, no jawing, no clipboard throwing, none of the antics that used to get bill parcells, jon gruden, and their ilk plenty of air time on ESPN sportscenter. the quarterbacks who play for these coaches, the bears' rex grossman and the colts' peyton manning, cite their calming influence for helping them get through their toughest moments.

would that ryan gregorio of the purefoods chunkee giants learn a thing or two from these head coaches and stop acting like a wuss whenever his team is coming apart.

Saw the huge billboard along edsa of the new nike commercial "the second coming" of air force 1, and whoa truly hard to miss! Saw the accompanying t.v. ad too last night at NBA's league pass. Steve Nash was there, Lebron, Tony Parker, Kobe, Pierce, Sheed, Amare etc...all wearing white playing ball and walking towards an airport hangar. Two questions popped when I saw the ad; where's melo and vince and why is kobe standing in the middle of the pack in the end, shouldn't it be lebron? Great commercial, though.

Peyton Manning is the MVP. He can now be considered as one of the all-time great QBs who have played the game, congrats to him, Tony Dungy, and the rest of the Colts *;)

As for the Bears, what the heck are they going to do with Grossman? His decision making towards the end of the game was terrible, as those interceptions really killed 'em. The only short term solutions I can see who might be available this off-season is Jake Plummer and Jeff Garcia, and those two aren't exactly sure things either. Chicago will have some tough decisions ahead for the next few months to figure out what to do next.

heto tingin ko: rex grossman was put in a position in which he was forced to throw because the colts did a good job stuffing the run. indianapolis head coach tony dungy made the right decisions to clog the middle in order to stop chicago's running backs from gaining long yardage--so successful, in fact, that chicago's ballcarriers including grossman were often stopped behind the line of scrimmage for losses. this forced chicago to lean on rex grossman late in the game. now the colts readily yielded the short completion, opting to allow grossman to connect with his running backs and tight ends for three, four, five yards. the reason is clear: to goad grossman to attempt to throw long, given the fact the bears were behind the score. and when grossman threw the bomb, hayun, nandun nakaabang yung mga safeties ng indianapolis, lalo na si bob sanders. utakan lang talaga ;D

as far as what to do with grossman, my view is that despite his so-called inconsistency, he has what it takes to be chicago's main man in the same vein as brett favre and john elway--yung mga matagal mahinog pero naging bukod tangi nung ganap nang nahinog. bata pa sya, he'll respond to game situations better as he gets more poised in the pocket.

bad rex showed up today... he sure has a split football personality (come on, 2 botched snaps from the center?)

good job by the colts... they played ball control... kudos to them. i mean, i saw like 3:1 ratio there... the bears D got tired...

i still hate peyton, though. LaDainian Tomlinson rules.

For me this is Tony Dungy's second Super Bowl win.

For all intents and purposes, Jon Gruden's Super Bowl winning Bucs had Tony Dungy's (and Lovie Smith's) name written all over it.* "Chuckie" Gruden just had perfect timing joining the Bucs at the right time.

Lovie has what it takes to be in the same league as Lombardi, Chuck Noll, Tom Landry and the rest of the SB winning coaches.* He'll have his time (paging Al Davis: please hire this guy, get out of the way, and let the young ones take over).

Tony Dungy joined a limited but celebrated group, super bowl winners as both player and coach. Tony joins former Raiders coach Tom Flores and Mike Ditka in this group. He now will be the proud owner of 3 super bowl rings.

Give credit to the Colts defense. Manning did enough to put points on the board but it was their defense in the last 5 games that stepped up to the plate. Teams were running over the Colts front seven in the first 10 games but the defense has been stellar when it counted most. The Colts outplayed the higher rank defenses of Baltimore, New England and Chicago. Chicago definitely missed the services of veteran safety Mike Brown, Manning burned Manning on the first Colts touchdown, and lineman Tommie Harris.

Wawa naman my beloved Bears! :'(

I wonder what Edgerrin James and Mike Vanderjagt must be thinking right now?* ??? The year they leave the Colts for free agency, that's when they win the Super Bowl, heh. Tough luck guys.

Grossman should still be the starter next season for the Bears, but should be kept on a short leash. They should find someone who can push him for the starting job, so that he'll be more consistent knowing he could lose his spot as the starter. Griese and Orton aren't the answers to the back-up slots.

I think that we will be back next year. Too bad Grossman wasn't that up to it. Well, I'd rather the Bears lose the way they did this year. In comparison to the way the Cubs lost in '04, (a'la Bartman), this was an easier pill to swallow for Chicago die-hards...
