Umulan sa QC kani-kanina lang. I don't hope this signals the start of the rainy season; I haven't been to Galera yet this summer. Or Bora, although that can wait.

For the first time in months, nakasulat na ulit ako ng love poem in Filipino. Asteeeg.

I hope Da Raiders did it right this time. I'm sick and tired of the Silver and Black being the laughing stock of the league year in and year out. Of course, I'm sick and tired of Al Davis' constant meddling in the team's affairs. Yeah, he owns the team but it's not doing anyone any good. Tatang, awat na!

Captain America should stay dead. His relevance died with the Cold War.

Superman is a more durable (and flexible) icon by far. Although he is all-American, he is much less of a political tool than Captain America was designed to be.

Had only 9 names for senator. Basicaly chosen on the criteria of "fidelity". Individuals who have always been consistent on their views and stand on issues, of course malinaw ang posisyon. I may not agree with them, I may not like their faces. Pero kung alam kong yun ka at hindi doble cara, imo, you deserve a seat in the senate.

For mayor, crime deterent and prevention ang kailangan sa lugar namin. Kung sino yung mayor ko, yung mga kapartido niya ang binoto ko for vice, councilors and representative.

UEFA Champions League Finals
AC Milan 2 - Liverpool 1

Filippo Inzaghi scored both goals for the Rossaneri while Kuyt made the score more respectable for Liverpool.

It's Milan's 7th title, just two behind Real Madrid's record nine trophies. Sweet vengeance for their defeat two years ago against Liverpool in one of the most dramatic Champions League Finals in history.

In 2005, Milan was leading 3-0 by halftime. In football, that means you just go through the motions in the second half, wait for the final whistle, and the victory is yours. But inspired by Steven Gerrard, Liverpool equalized in a six-minute spell and eventually won on penalties.

I saw this feature on GMA 7 about how Muslim kids were being picked on at a certain public elementary school. Apprently even the teachers got it on it as one teacher ordered one of the Muslim kids to remove her veil or be sent to the Principal's Office. The kids were of course distraught, and the reporter was rather sympathetic with the "discrimination" these kids were subjected to.

My reaction: Are you f---ing kidding me?

In Saudi Arabia, the seat of Islam, even non-Muslims are suppsed to strictly obey the tenets of Islam within the Kingdom i.e. women - whether Muslim or not - must wear a veil.

Why is it in non-Muslim countries, like say THE PHILIPPINES, people shout and scream "discrimination" when Muslims are asked to conform to our mores and standards?

So in the very heart of Islam, in Saudi Arabia, non-Muslims must obey the mores, standards and laws of an Islamic state and society, and this is not called discrimination, and there is nothing wrong with this.

But when a Muslim girl is told to remove her veil in the predominantly Catholic Republic of the Philippines it becomes discrimination and it is morally wrong?

Arrant nonsense and unmitigated bullshit if you ask me.

Because predominantly Catholic or not, the Republic itself cannot unreasonably restrict the free exercise of religion, seen here as the wearing of the veil. Now, if this were, say, a military training facility, you can allow the restraint against the veil.

Congratulations to the Anaheim Ducks for winning their first Stanley Cup, and to defenseman Scott Niedermayer for winning the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP.

I still would have loved the Cup to go back to Canada, but it was not to be (again) this year. (Maybe Ottawa needs to beef up between the pipes. Walang pantapat kay Giguere.) On the bright side, it's good to see Canadian teams in the finals these past two years. Just a little more, methinks, and someone will bring the Cup back home!

EDIT: Scott and Rob Niedermayer are the first set of brothers to win the Cup together since Brent and Duane Sutter (New York Islanders, 1983).

Blooded, to me this is more about reciprocity than law.

Let's put it this way: suppose I were to bash in the face of say, a public elementary school teacher who ordered a Muslim girl to remove her veil in a Caloocan Public School.

Would this same Muslim girl bash in the face of the religious enforcers if they forced a Catholic woman to wear a veil in Riyadh?

If the Muslim is unwilling to stand up for my rights in his jurisdiction even as a courtesy, then I suppose he/she should not expect me to stand up for him/her in my jurisdiction. You want our women to wear a veil in your country, fine. But please don't give us any shit when we ask your women to remove their veils in our country.

Speaking personally I think all of this so-called "call for tolerance" and "bridging gaps" and "finding common ground" ought to be a two-way process. If France could ban the wearing of the Mulsim veil on their streets why can't we do the same here?

^^ Always been a fan of the Finnish Flash, Teemu Selanne, ever since his younger days with the defunct Winnipeg Jets, so I was rooting for Anaheim to win. Good to see them finally win the Stanley Cup.

Never been a fan of Ottawa, to be honest. My Dad grew up rooting for the Montreal Canadiens, so if the Stanley Cup shall be going back to Canada, I want the Habs to win that honour* ;D. They still need to get some good players, though, before they can even be considered as Cup contenders anytime soon.

^^ I never really knew how to make heads or tails out of the recent Stanley Cup finals.* Never was a fan of the Sens (still bleeding Leafs blue here, no matter if they suck) yet felt it was time for Lord Stanley's orinola to come up north.* On the other hand, you had more Canadian content with the Duckies.* So I ended up following the Goliath killers, LeBron and the little Boobies, blow the 'stons out of the water.* Hope they do the same with the San Antonio goons.

Hey Joe :)

If you were an American citizen, I'd definitely pencil you in as a Republican. You do make a good point about reciprocity.

That said, ours is "a government of laws and not of men" -- (or at least some of us* try to make it so, but I digress...) -- and freedom of religion and freedom of expression are two of the more basic freedoms guaranteed by our Constitutional Bill of Rights. The crux of this matter was already in point when you correctly characterized our country as a REPUBLIC. We are not, as you know, a monarchy, a theocracy or any other form of state but a REPUBLIC. We have also chosen to be governed in* a secular fashion that is more than loosely modelled on the American system which is, strangely enough a FEDERAL one. In this hybrid manner therefore, we have chosen to live, obvious warts and all. Much unlike the French in your example, whose Republic is as Franco-homogenous as homogenous can be.

The fact of the matter is, (notwithstanding the obvious merits of your argument), in these tropical isles the rule of law is oft bruited about as supreme. The law says that freedom of religion is guaranteed, and the Supreme Court has given flesh to it in the analogous case of Ebralinag, GR No. 95770; relating to the religious practices and beliefs of the Christian sect of Jehovah's Witnesses.

In the final analysis therefore, we would do well to just make sure that our own laws are upheld and dispensed properly, equally, fairly, and without fear or favor. Again "equal protection under the law" being an enshrined principle, but sadly, another one oft given short shrift.

We can talk about this at the BEN bash if you like because discussing this without the benefit of a beer in hand can only cause you to age... :D Cheers buddy!

Nagtext kanina.

Last night while watching the yankees-tampa bay game, it was quite strange to see that there were more yankees fans watching than devil rays fans...and they weren't playing in the bronx. The predominantly yankee crowd were even cheering for a matsui homer and chien mang wang's pitching, i'm puzzled. ???

The 90's team of chuck knoblauch, tino martinez, scott brosius, paul o'neil etc... was of a different breed, even derek jeter said last year that the team isn't quite what it used to be,nevertheless I do hope NY wins this year, it's about time they get another one. Question is, what do they have to do to get it and does this team have what it takes? Can they even get past Manny Ramirez and the Red Sox? They're playing around the .500 area which is not a good thing in baseball or in any sport for that matter. I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Last night while watching the yankees-tampa bay game, it was quite strange to see that there were more yankees fans watching than devil rays fans...and they weren't playing in the bronx.* The predominantly yankee crowd were even cheering for a matsui homer and chien mang wang's pitching, i'm puzzled. ???

The 90's team of chuck knoblauch, tino martinez, scott brosius, paul o'neil etc... was of a different breed, even derek jeter said last year that the team isn't quite what it used to be,nevertheless I do hope NY wins this year, it's about time they get another one.* Question is, what do they have to do to get it and does this team have what it takes? Can they even get past Manny Ramirez and the Red Sox? They're playing around the .500 area which is not a good thing in baseball or in any sport for that matter. I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Bronx bombers forever!

Steinbrenner is from the Tampa area. Yankees spring training is done here. if i am not mistaken, there is a yankee office here as well.

like many others are saying, the michael vick scandal is perhaps the most bizarre way for a celebrity to fall from grace. part of me says nothing beats OJ killing his ex-wife and her companion, but pleading guilty to executing your own fighting dogs by clubbing or drowning them is utterly disturbing and sickening.

Yeah, makes you wonder "what was he thinking"?* I woudn't be surprised if Al Davis and the Raiders come to terms with Vick once this thing blows over.* They need a quarterback at the moment and Vick has enough baggage to fit the mold of your standard model Raider head case.* Sayang talaga.

Fountain of youth: LB suits up for Sul Ross State after 37-year wait, 6 years before Medicare
By JAIME ARON, AP Sports Writer
August 22, 2007

AP - Aug 22, 2:37 pm EDT

ALPINE, Texas (AP) -- Mike Flynt was drinking beer and swapping stories with some old football buddies a few months ago when he brought up the biggest regret of his life: Getting kicked off the college team before his senior year.

So, one of his pals said, why not do something about it?

Most 59-year-olds would have laughed. Flynt's only concern was if he was eligible.

Finding out he was, Flynt returned to Sul Ross State this month, 37 years after he left and six years before he goes on Medicare. His comeback peaked Wednesday with the coach saying he's made the Division III team's roster. He could be in action as soon as Sept. 1.

I'm sharing this here instead of the new NFL thread because this is where the Michael Vick discussions are, and so I don't clutter the new thread with discussions that aren't about NFL games.

Vick: Villain or scoundrel ... or sympathetic figure?
By Gregg Easterbrook
ESPN Page 2 August 17, 2007, 8:59 PM ET

I have an inclination to sympathize with Michael Vick, and not just because People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is denouncing him. They are popping champagne corks over at PETA, as Vick is the best thing to happen to the organization's profile and fundraising in years. Remember, the charges against Vick are accusations. The Duke lacrosse mess reminded us that accusations are not the same as guilt and that prosecutors might be unscrupulous. The NFL, the media and popular opinion all seem to accept that because Vick is accused, he must be guilty. He's been treated as guilty -- mocked, effectively suspended from football, deprived of most of his income -- long before any legal determination has been made. There's something deeply sick about the fact that you can go to the NFL's official shop and order a Bills jersey with No. 32 and SIMPSON on the back -- go here and try it yourself -- or a Panthers jersey with CARRUTH on the back, the NFL system actually says "Great choice!" in response, but if you go here and try to order a Falcons' jersey with Vick's name or number, you'll get a message saying your order cannot be processed.

Read the rest here - http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=easterbrook/070816

There are still some gaps in Easterbrook's arguments as pointed out by commenters to the article, but I think he presents an interesting new perspective on the issue.

john_paul_manahan
08-23-2007, 06:19 PM
i think the gravity of the charges, as well as the situation that vick (one of my favorite players, esp during his VT days) got himself into. add to that the fact that people naturally love dogs...

but g. easterbrook has a point. and people like o'reilly are eating this alive....

Looking at things from a different vantage point, the late former journalists/political animals Monching Mitra and Louie Beltran never hid (and even flaunted) the fact that they raised fighting cocks and spent weekends at the cockfights, yet nobody raised even an eyebrow.* Hmmmm.

Still, as far as Vick's sorry ass is concerned, "what was he thinking?"

Bennie Bangag
08-24-2007, 06:31 AM
heto tingin ko:

1. dogfighting is banned in many states in the US. cockfighting in contrast is perfectly legal here. michael vick was actively involved in a criminal ring, and there's no skirting around it.

2. it appears that michael vick at first was naive about the seriousness of the animal cruelty charges against him. he believed that what he did with his underperforming dogs was nobody else's business. if his idea of blowing off steam, as accounts would have it, would be to drown or electrocute the "talunan" in his kennel, then that's an utterly depraved character. no sabungero would ever think of ending the life of his talisain. if it dies, let it be on the pit, fighting until the very end.

3. there is no racism angle that i see here. unlike the plights of jackie robinson and hank aaron, michael vick is being persecuted not because of the color of his skin but because of the problems he brought on to himself.

This is the unfortunate experience of former UST courtside reporter Rheena Villamor in her recent USA trip. Only saw the last minute of the news report on Bandila last night.

Biyernes, 12 Oktubre, 2007
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=95667

"Sabi niya I don’t believe you. I’m gonna put you to jail immediately. Iyun ang sabi niya sa akin. Parang ako naman hindi natatakot kasi alam ko hindi naman ako makukulong. Wala silang proof na ipapakulong nila ako for five years.

"Pumunta po iyung guy officer na nag-interrogate sa sister ko and then he said na your sister already told us the truth that you’re going to work here. Sabi ko we’re not going to work here because we do not have our working visa,” ang sabi naman ni Mary Ann.

Now if only they could spell Philippines correctly

Rosales, Delasin lead Phillipines to victory

Associated Press

SUN CITY, South Africa -- Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin of the Philippines shot a 7-under 65 Sunday to beat South Korea by two strokes at the Women's World Cup of Golf.

Ji-Yai Shin and Eun-Hee Ji were comfortably in the lead after nine holes, but Rosales and Delasin had five birdies and finished at 18-under 198 at the Gary Player Country Club.

Taiwan and Japan shared third place at 203.

Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst of the United States had six birdies and a bogey for a final round 67. Their 208 gave them a share of 10th with Scotland.

"It's tough, but it is a fun golf course," Hurst said. "You have to hit it straight, which we didn't."

Delasin sealed the win with a 15-foot putt for birdie on the par-5 18th, after she had pulled her drive to the right of the fairway. She threaded her second shot close to the trees onto the fairway, and dropped her third to set up the putt.

"I had an angel with me on that [putt]," Delasin said. "I had no fear. I just crossed my fingers and hit it."

Korea went into the final hole needing an eagle to get back into the match. Shin's second shot aimed straight at the pin but it veered right and bounced off a rock in the water surrounding the island green. It landed 30 feet from the flag.

Shin finished with a birdie, Korea's second on a homeward nine against six for the Philippines.

It was the reverse for the opening nine holes. Shin had an eagle 3 on the fifth and a birdie on the par-4 sixth, to pressure the Philippines, who birdied the first and third holes.

Gwladys Nocera and Virginie Lagoutte-Clement of France shot 67 to finish fifth, while South Africa, Canada and Wales shared sixth.

hi mga sir.. i dont know where to put this topic kaya dito ko na lang ilinagay.. 2 years ago mga sir, i accidentally dislocated my left shoulder while trying to go for a steal while playing the sport i love so much..

I went to the Orthopedic center and they said that there was nothing wrong with my shoulder, just really an accident. Since then, my shoulder has been already 6 more times after that accident. The last time na nadislocate ito is last January 10. Believe me mga sir, i will rate that pain in 10 (10 being the higjest). Right now, hindi ko maingat my left shoulder, though i can move it, di ko lang talaga siya maingat kasi im afraid na baka madislocate ulit.

I am now planning to have my surgery right after graduation (mga late march or early april).

Mga sir, since this is a forum site which is dedicated to basketball, baka meron kayong kilalang doctors na pwde kong bisitahin and magpakonsulta.. and sana hinde siya ganun kamahal maningil.. ;D

Coming soon: Playboy Philippine Edition

By CARMELA FONBUENA

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storyPage.aspx?storyId=113172

Daddy’s magazine is making its way to Philippine shelves.

They surely remember—others will never forget—that 1980s edition of Germany’s local Playboy showing the Philippines’ very own Tetchie Agbayani posing nude. Never mind that they couldn’t read the magazine’s story or the captions of Agbayani’s photos—which were all written in German. They weren’t the reason they bought the magazine in the first place.

Didn’t Daddy wish back then for a Philippine edition of Playboy?

About three decades later, that forgotten wish will come true.

Next month, expect in the magazine racks a local Playboy most probably standing next to FHM and Maxim.

Playboy Magazine Philippine Edition is scheduled to be launched April 2 at Sofitel Hotel in Pasay City.

But is Daddy still Playboy’s market? Isn’t Daddy a little old for Playboy now?

Even Agbayani has changed track. She is now teaching at the St. Joseph College in Quezon City.

Conservative Playboy?
But before anyone expects anything from Playboy Philippines, Playboy editor-in-chief Beting Laygo Dolor clarifies that there will be no nudity in the local edition.

“It’s a lifestyle magazine for mature, successful men and women,” he says.

“No, Playboy Philippines will not be more daring than FHM,” he says. “We will be adjusted to the local culture and sensibilities.”

“Our market is different from FHM or Maxim,” he adds.

Dolor boasts of his contributors. “I have five or six Palanca Awardees as contributors,” he says, without divulging his prize-winning contributors or the articles in the first issue next month.

Aside from its photos, Playboy has always been known for its “high brow articles” and the Playboy interview. It is what men usually used as excuse in buying the magazine.

“I buy it because it has great articles,” they would say. But they all know that the excuse was more often a lie.

But Playboy Philippines may be different.

In the Philippines, “being daring doesn’t dictate the success of men’s magazines in the Philippines,” notes adverting and marketing specialist Ed Estrada of Image Dimensions.

“Our first issue will make clear what we are about. It will be a good read,” Dolor says.

Will Filipinos want to buy Playboy?

The country is getting a Playboy franchise at a time when Playboy is internationally declining in circulation, eroded by the competitions like FHM and Maxim, even if they show less skin. Both have their local franchises already.

For sure, Playboy is still big with its current circulation of about 3 million copies in the US. But it’s been down from its peak in the 1970s when the magazine could sell over seven million copies. In Australia, Playboy folded up in 2000.

The nudity of Playboy has become obsolete because of the Internet and Cable television, where photos even more daring than Playboy’s—and videos, too—are available for free.

These, plus Playboy’s reputation as “old dad’s mag,” says advertising and marketing specialist Greg Garcia, are factors going against the magazine. “Playboy is for old people,” he says.

Playboy was first published in the US in 1953, with Marilyn Monroe on the centerfold. It became an international sensation in the 1970s, and several countries started to publish their local editions.

On the other hand, FHM and Maxim cater to “a new generation of voyeurs,” Garcia says. There are referred to as “lad mags.”

The “old dad’s mag” reputation of Playboy is affecting its sales abroad, says Garcia.

“That’s a problem I see even in the States,” he says. “It’s not a good thing. That’s the challenge for Playboy Philippines.”

FHM Dominates Market

The first to have its local franchise in the Philippines, FHM has cornered the Philippine market for men’s magazines.

The latest known survey conducted by TNS-Trends in 1999, showed that FHM got 67 percent share of the market for men’s magazines in Metro Manila. The other men’s mags include Men’s Health (14 percent), Maxim (12 percent), Uno (4 percent), and Manual (3 percent). The survey was commissioned by the Publisher of FHM.

In 2005, FHM also reported a circulation of 133,492 copies based on the audit of Sycip, Gorres and Velayo, which was also commissioned by FHM’s publisher.

“FHM is attuned to the times,” says Estrada of Image Dimensions. “Inspite of being an international magazine, they localized.”

FHM draws a big market because of its success in showing sexy photos of local celebrities, says Garcia.

Unlike seeing a nude photo of, say, Pamela Anderson in an international magazine, Filipinos would rather see a photo of a sexy Anne Curtis, Angelica Panganiban, or Marimar. “They are reachable,” Garcia explains.

FHM is usually most-talked about when formerly conservative child stars shed their clothes and pose for FHM in their two-piece swimsuits.

Makati, Cabanatuan, Tagbilaran are RP's best cities to live in

By CARMELA FONBUENA
abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak

Among the best cities in the Philippines, Makati City, Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija, and Tagbilaran City in Bohol offer the best quality of life, according to a new survey of the Asian Institute Management (AIM).

These three cities ranked highest in the quality of life category among 25 cities that made it to the AIM’s Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project 2007, a survey of cities’ global competitiveness.

The cities were separately ranked according to size. Makati, Cabanatuan, and Tagbilaran were categorized as metro, mid-sized and small-sized, respectively.

Quality of life is one of six categories in AIM’s survey. The other categories are cost of doing business, dynamism of local economy, human resources and training, infrastructure, and responsiveness of local government units (LGUs) to business needs.

Unlike its previous surveys, AIM decided not to rank the cities based on total performance.

This is the 5th round of the AIM survey on Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking.

Quality of life is considered one of the yardsticks in determining which cities have successfully developed and which have succumbed to the ills of urbanization.

Among the relevant aspects of quality of life are social welfare of the people, peace, and order, quality of living environment, and local amenities.

Cabanatuan and Tagbilaran ranked first in their respective city sizes, rating 7.17 and 7.97, respectively. The highest rating is 10 points. The average rating in their city sizes is 6.31 and 6.43, respectively.

Makati ranked second among metro cities, with a rating of 6.98. The average rating of metro cities in terms of quality of life is 6.06.

Cabanatuan was credited for its good access to commercial banks, low or non-existent informal fees, and total crime solution efficiency.

Tagbilaran was noted for its low or non-existent informal fees, good supply of water, and low water rates. Its local environmental planning and management program was also praised.

Makati was recognized for its good access to commercial banks, total crime solution efficiency, and supply of potable water among others. AIM also noted its programs such as the Makati Health Program, the “Yellow Card,” the Makati Command Center, and its Satellite Real Property Tax collection.

A total of 90 cities were surveys—20 metro cities, 25 mid-sized cities, and 45 small-sized cities. The AIM survey was conducted in collaboration with the German Technical Cooperation, International Finance Corporation, International Labour Organization, SM Investments Inc., and Petron Corporation.

The following is the complete list of the top performing cities.

1.* * Davao
2.* * Lapu-Lapu

the department of education is in charge of declaring the suspension of classes for elementary and high school levels, while the commission on higher education is tasked for tertiary and graduate levels. deped takes a more cautious, proactive approach in declaring suspensions dahil kapakanan ng mga batibot ang pinapangalagaan nila. on the other hand, ched is more laissez-faire except for typhoon signal no. 3 because you should be able to make adult choices and decisions in college. as a college student, one must be able to justify his or her absence from class to professors--that's what consulting hours are for ;D

Two long weekends this August

Thursday, August 7, 2008

The nation will enjoy two “long weekends” this month based on the law rationalizing national holidays or what is more commonly known as holiday economics.

Proclamation No. 1463, issued by the President earlier this year, set the specific dates of holidays for the year as mandated by Republic Act 9492 or the law rationalizing national holidays.

For this month, Ninoy Aquino Day would be moved to Aug. 18 from Aug. 21 while National Heroes’ Day, which historically falls on Aug. 31, will be celebrated on Aug. 25.

R.A. 9492 provides that holidays, except those which are religious in nature, are moved to the nearest Monday unless otherwise modified by law, order or proclamation. – Marvin Sy

US white population a minority by 2042: census bureau

Agence France-Presse
First Posted 04:02:00 08/15/2008

WASHINGTON -- Whites in the United States will no longer be a majority of the population by 2042, nearly a decade earlier than previous projections, according to US Census Bureau figures released Thursday.

While 65 percent of the US population is projected to be white in 2010, those numbers will start to decline around the 2030s as white deaths outpace births, according to the figures.

The figures show that in 2042, whites will be outnumbered by Americans who call themselves Hispanic, black, Asian, American Indian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander. Previous projections said this would happen by 2050.

By the mid-century mark, when the United States is projected to have a population of 439 million people, 54 percent of the population will consist of racial minorities.

The largest growth will be among Hispanics, expected to number 133 million by 2050 -- almost a third of the projected US population growth between 2010 and 2050 -- due to high birth rates and immigration.

"No other country has experienced such rapid racial and ethnic change," demographer Mark Mather told the New York Times.

The Asian population will rise from 4.5 percent in 2010 to nearly eight percent in 2050, but the non-Hispanic black population is expected to remain steady, going from 12.2 percent of the population in 2010 to 11.8 percent by 2050, the figures show.

The US population is also expected to be much grayer: currently 38.7 million people in the United States are aged 65 or older, a figure that will balloon to 88.5 million by 2050 boosted by the "baby boomers," those born in the post-World War II era (1946 to 1966).

Researchers pointed out that some sections of the United States already have reached the point where whites are minorities, such as the states of California and Texas.

The findings also pointed to a swelling size of the US population as a whole, adding more than 130 million people from its current figure of around 305 million by 2050.

And along with the overall growth, the number of mixed-race Americans was expected to triple, reaching 16 million, or close to four percent of the population.

"Within the conventional definition of race, white, black, Asian, minority versus non-minority, this is a big change," David Waddington, chief of the Census Bureau's population projections branch, told the Times.

maybe it's high time for FINA to start looking at the new swimwear, most especially the new sharkskin bodysuits, now being used in the olympics. mukhang masyadong dramatic ang pag-break ng mga swimming records. my fear is that if this trend continues, questions might arise as to whether the new world records were the result of superior aquatic athleticism or the handiwork of new technology that gives its user an unfair advantage over his or her competition.

I think Michael Phelps is a natural swimmer, very much like Australia's Ian Thorpe. Look at his body type: broad shoulders, long arms and reach, slim waist, and large hands and feet that virtually serve as paddles. Many of those who share these characteristics have gone on to swimming greatness, and he's the latest to roll off the assembly line.

When he stated at the onset that he sought to break Mark Spitz's all-time Olympic record of seven gold medals in a single Olympic year, then he must have trained and prepared accordingly. However, I do get Kid Cubao's original train of thought: are world swimming records being smashed because of superior athletic performance, or because of technological advances that bestow upon its user an unfair edge over the competition?

To answer my own question, I think it's a little of both, but with a little difference: Michael Phelps is really the world's best swimmer, and no doubt his athletic performance was enhanced because of his use of special Speedo bodysuits that allow him to rip and slice through the water like aquatic predators. However, I don't think there's any unfair advantage enjoyed by Phelps because the cutting-edge technology in his swim gear can also be found in his competitors.

Regarding the swimwear issue, matagal na issue na yan. It was resolved na already about 3 years ago after the Athen Olympics. That was featured in a CNN program years back.

One of the gold medals that Phelps won, teammates niya ang nagpanalo. In the 4 x 100 relay, Phelps was the first to swim and going into the final lap his teammate came from behind (2 places behind yata) for a dramatic win for USA's swim team.

A former Canadian swimmer commented that Phelps's wingspan is longer than his (Phelps) height. Also, Phelps is double-jointed at the chest so he has a mechanical advantage over other swimmers since his lower body is a more efficient propulsion unit.

Mukhang cloning na ang next sports frontier, if you can clone those body features.

Ilagay lang sa tamang pananaw.

NOT every gold medal won by Spitz, nuon, at Phelps, ngayon, are INDIVIDUAL events. May kasamang relay- team events.

Yes, these two swimmers are indeed great, walang duda. But they are fortunate to have teammates who will complement or even propel their teams to win the relays.

Sa puntong iyan, it's the country's swimming program that should be given credit. This may sound simplistic as there is more to it than just having a good program. But it all started from there, and later, the workings of capitalism, advances in science, inability of other developed nations to keep up, etc., all add up to make this feat possible.

One difference between Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps is Spitz was essentially a 2 stroke swimmer (Freestyle and Butterfly) while Phelps competes using all 4 strokes--including that most gruelling of all events the 400IM.

He has the amazing ability to recover from a race quicker than anyone--remember that after each race , he warms down for 2400m to rid his body of the lactic acid.

He has the uncanny ability to conserve his energy, doing just enough to get through the heats and semis--he rarely breaks the world record in the prelims.

He has the best turn in swimming bar none. He wins most of his races on the turns, especially the final turn where he'll use his God-given body (huge-double jointed feet that act like flippers) to underwater dolphin kick faster and further than his competition. Frequently, you'll see him behind at the final turn but come out ahead after the underwater dolphin. At the US trials, Lochte overtook Phelps in the breaststroke leg in the 400IM and led at the final turn until Phelps used an awesome underwater dolphin kick to overhaul the lead. Lochte took 3 or 4 strokes before Michael finished his underwater kick about half a body length ahead.

Finally he knows how to finish...no amount of technology helped him come from 7th place at the turn to out touching Cavic by a fingertip in the 100m Fly -- his weakest event and the only one he doesn't hold the World Record in.

read this article on how the Beijing pool and other technology helped all those swimmers make World Record times.

Meron nang IRA sa Pilipinas

It's called the Personal Equity Retirement Account or P.E.R.A. The law was signed by GMA last friday.

Looking at the provisions of the law, it's more like a Roth IRA than a Traditional IRA.

And take note, ang implemeting agency ay ang BSP, hindi BIR. Hooooray!

Hi mangtsito. Can you pls elaborate on this PERA and translate to us how the commoners can really benefit from this? Thanks.

Kid Cubao
08-25-2008, 11:25 AM
it's basically forced savings that will provide for a dependable and sustainable retirement plan for filipino workers. that way, it will reduce our overreliance on pension fund corporations like the SSS and the GSIS.

with PERA, an individual contributor can make a total maximum annual contribution of P50,000.00 to his PERA account. he or she shall be given an income tax credit equivalent to five percent (5%) of the total PERA contribution.

heto maganda dito: income from the contribution as well as the eventual distribution of the PERA to the contributor shall be tax-exempt. this amount is withdrawable when the contributor reaches the age of 55.

gameface_one
08-25-2008, 11:43 AM
^^^ Thanks Kid Cubao. Will this also be made compulsory like SSS and GSIS or do we need to apply separately for this? How about entrepreneurs, puede rin ba? Who are qualified?

mangtsito
08-25-2008, 08:52 PM
^ Nope, that's the beauty of it. You have more control on the amount that you wish to contrbute.* Yun nga lang, if you do the contribution, you can't withdraw it until you reach 55 years old - or else you will be assessed a 10% penalty on the amount taken out.* The only exception is if you need the money for medical expenses, qualified college expenses, first time home purchase, or if you become disabled and you need the funds for subsistence.

This is far better than existing private pension plans wherein the earlier you withdraw before the maturity date, the smaller the amount that you are allowed take out.* For example, with my existing retirement plan with Manulife, I can only take out something like P700 out of the P40k I've contributed so far.* With PERA, 10% lang ng P40k ang penalty ko if I want to take out the whole thing.

And, as Kid Cubao mentioned, any income earned by the fund is TAX EXEMPT.* This means if you invest P50k in stocks and mutual funds, and the investment subsequently doubles in value, then the government can NOT touch that P50,000 captial gain.* 8)

EDITED TO ADD:

From what I've read, the maximum contribution amount per year is P200k for OFWs and P100k for non-OFWs. For married OFWs, it's P400k. But I'd have to read up on it again.

The PERA is open to all Filipinos. Somewhere along the bicameral conferences of Congress, the target of the law became OFWs....but still, everyone can take advantage of it.

It's astounding how the BIR did not even express it's objections to their boss GMA on the loss of revenue that the PERA will cause. In the US, the IRAs only provide for tax-deferment, and not complete exemption. :)

This is interesting. First, the BIR didn't raise a fuzz about this considering the lost revenue this vehicle will create. Secondly, napasa siya as a tax-free vehicle not like its North American siblings which are just tax-deferred to a later time when the individual is in a lower tax bracket. What I fear (I hope I'm wrong here) is that the government will make a backdoor privatization of the government-managed retirement fund operations or some portion thereof, and pass responsibility of retirement fund management to the individual. If that is the case, then the BIR looks smarter than they really are by just keeping their mouths shut.

Kuro-kuro, haka-haka. Oh well, just have to wait for the implementing guidelines then.

With the current 9 - 10 % inflation rate, PERA qualified investment vehicles should at least give you an ROI of 12% p.a.* Risk free T-bill rates is around* 6.5%. With Mutual funds, you also have to contend with Management Fees. If you earn abroad, take note also of forex risk before investing in PERA. How about the return of the local stock market?

What qualified investment in the country that has an* ROI higher than the current inflation rate? Since this is actually designed to lure foreign earning pinoys to save in the country, I suppose a dollar denominated qualified investment vehicle is available locally.

It does not matter if this is tax free since the money to purchase this seems to be coming from after-tax funds. Still a 5% tax credit is better than none at all. I have more questions but we need to wait for the implementing rules.

The bottomline in investing/saving is the risk-adjusted return tailored to your personal requirement (investment life cycle, level of risk tolerance, time-frame etc.)

And the hottest vice-presidential candidate, ever, denies that humans have a hand in global warming:

Environmentalists can't corral Palin
By DINA CAPPIELLO – 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — At the National Governors Association conference where she first met John McCain, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had other business: making her case to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne against classifying the polar bear as a threatened species.

Months later she sued Kempthorne, arguing that the Bush administration didn't use the best science in concluding that without further protection, the polar bear faces eventual extinction because of disappearing sea ice as the result of global warming.

Palin, McCain's vice presidential running mate, has had frequent run-ins with environmentalists.

In her 20 months as governor, Palin has questioned the conclusions of federal marine scientists who say the Cook Inlet beluga whale needs protection under the federal Endangered Species Act.

She has defended Alaska's right to shoot down wolves from the air to boost caribou and moose herds for hunters, and — contrary to a view held by McCain — is not convinced that global warming is the result of human activity.

Read this over at Howie Severino's blog (http://blogs.gmanews.tv/sidetrip/blog/index.php?/archives/382-The-first-half-blackhalf-white-candidate.html). Baka mag-backfire pa ang strategy ni McCain:

As for McCain, after insisting that his opponent Obama was too inexperienced to be president, the 72 year old chose for his running mate a pretty 44 year old with less experience than almost anyone else in the field. Now controversy swirls around Sarah Palin because her unmarried teen-age daughter is pregnant. But that's not the real scandal. As governor of oil-rich Alaska, Palin does not believe that humans have had anything to do with global warming and she doesn't believe in evolution. Plus there's this rumor with credible pictures going around that she is not the mother of the baby with Down's Syndrome that she claims as her own. Reports say the baby is actually her daughter Bristol's, the same teen who is now pregnant (again?).

You can almost hear the essayist Michael Kinsley smacking his lips as he stripped away McCain's pretensions:

The important point about Palin's lack of experience isn't about Palin. It's about McCain. And the question is not how his choice of Palin might complicate his ability to use the "experience" issue, or whether he will have to drop experience as an issue. It's not even about the proper role of experience as an issue. In fact, it's not about experience at all. It's about honesty. The question should be whether McCain—and all the other Republicans who have been going on for months about Obama's dangerous lack of foreign-policy experience—ever meant a word of it. And the answer is apparently not.

Comrades Bush, Paulson and Bernanke Welcome You to the USSRA (United Socialist State Republic of America)

Nouriel Roubini | Sep 9, 2008

The now inevitable nationalization of Fannie and Freddie is the most radical regime change in global economic and financial affairs in decades. For the last twenty years after the collapse of the USSR, the fall of the Iron Curtain and the economic reforms in China and other emerging market economies the world economy has moved away from state ownership of the economy and towards privatization of previously stated owned enterprises. This trend was aggressively supported the United States that preached right and left the benefits of free markets and free private enterprise.

Today instead the US has performed the greatest nationalization in the history of humanity. By nationalizing Fannie and Freddie the US has increased its public assets by almost $6 trillion and has increased its public debt/liabilities by another $6 trillion. The US has also turned itself into the largest government-owned hedge fund in the world: by injecting a likely $200 billion of capital into Fannie and Freddie and taking on almost $6 trillion of liabilities of such GSEs the US has also undertaken the biggest and most levered LBO (“leveraged buy-out”) in human history that has a debt to equity ratio of 30 ($6,000 billion of debt against $200 billion of equity).

So now Comrades Bush, Paulson and Bernanke (as originally nicknamed by Willem Buiter) have now turned the USA into the USSRA (the United Socialist State Republic of America). Socialism is indeed alive and well in America; but this is socialism for the rich, the well connected and Wall Street. A socialism where profits are privatized and losses are socialized with the US tax-payer being charged the bill of $300 billion.

tingnan natin if the market forces will be able to correct itself from the distortions caused by speculation and geo-political events. it may drop to P40, there's no telling, but it may eventually settle at the P44-P46 range. oil, after all, is an exhaustible resource, and the quest for new untapped oilfields is moving more and more offshore, which will lead to generally higher oil prices.

Lehman Files Biggest Bankruptcy Case as Suitors Balk (Update4) (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=awh5hRyXkvs4&refer=us)

By Yalman Onaran and Christopher Scinta
More Photos/Details

Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., the fourth-largest U.S. investment bank, succumbed to the subprime mortgage crisis it helped create in the biggest bankruptcy filing in history.

The 158-year-old firm, which survived railroad bankruptcies of the 1800s, the Great Depression in the 1930s and the collapse of Long-Term Capital Management a decade ago, filed a Chapter 11 petition with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan today. The collapse of Lehman, which listed more than $613 billion of debt, dwarfs WorldCom Inc.'s insolvency in 2002 and Drexel Burnham Lambert's failure in 1990.

Lehman was forced into bankruptcy after Barclays Plc and Bank of America Corp. abandoned takeover talks yesterday and the company lost 94 percent of its market value this year. Chief Executive Officer Richard Fuld, who turned the New York-based firm into the biggest underwriter of mortgage-backed securities at the top of the U.S. real estate market, joins his counterparts at Bear Stearns Cos., Merrill Lynch & Co. and more than 10 banks that couldn't survive this year's credit crunch.

``There is likely to be a domino effect as other firms and individuals who relied on Lehman for financing feel the effects of its meltdown,'' said Charles ``Chuck'' Tatelbaum, a bankruptcy lawyer with Adorno & Yoss in Florida and former editor of the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal. ``The whole thing is frankly frightening for the U.S. economy.''

Bank of America to Buy Merrill (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122142278543033525.html?mod=special_coverage)

By MATTHEW KARNITSCHNIG, CARRICK MOLLENKAMP and DAN FITZPATRICK
September 15, 2008; Page A1

In a rushed bid to ride out the storm sweeping American finance, 94-year-old Merrill Lynch & Co. agreed late Sunday to sell itself to Bank of America Corp. for $50 billion.

The deal, worked out in 48 hours of frenetic negotiating, could instantly reshape the U.S. banking landscape, making the nation's prime behemoth even bigger. Late Sunday night, the companies' boards had approved the deal, but lawyers were negotiating over last-minute details.

Driven by Chief Executive Kenneth Lewis, Bank of America has already made dozens of acquisitions large and small, including the purchase of ailing mortgage lender Countrywide Financial Corp. earlier this year. In adding Merrill Lynch, it would control the nation's largest force of stock brokers as well as a well-regarded investment bank.

The combination, if approved by shareholders, would create a bank of vast reach, involved in nearly every nook and cranny of the financial system, from credit cards and auto loans to bond and stock underwriting, merger advice and wealth management.

Through the weekend, federal officials, including Federal Reserve Bank of New York head Timothy Geithner, made it clear that they strongly encouraged a deal to sell Merrill. They worried the firm could be the next to approach the brink of failure after Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., said people familiar with the matter.

A.I.G. Seeks $40 Billion in Fed Aid to Survive (http://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/aig-seeks-fed-aid-to-survive/index.html?ref=business)

Updated: The American International Group is seeking a $40 billion bridge loan from the Federal Reserve, as it faces a potential downgrade from credit ratings agencies that could spell its doom, a person briefed on the matter said Sunday night.

Ratings agencies threatened to downgrade the insurance giant’s credit rating by Monday morning, allowing counterparties to withdraw capital from their contracts with the company. One person close to the firm said that if such an event occurred, A.I.G. may survive for only 48 hours to 72 hours.

A.I.G.’s sickly financial health emerged late into one of the most tumultuous days in Wall Street history. Lehman Brothers, the 158-year-old investment bank, is expected to file for bankruptcy protection Sunday night, while Bank of America has agreed to buy Merrill Lynch for $50.03 billion.

It has already raised $20 billion this year. But even that enormous capital raise may not be enough.

In a more positive note, some say there's reason to cheer the demise of Lehman.

Reasons to cheer Lehman's demise (http://www.reuters.com/article/reutersComService4/idUSMAR53800320080915?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=0)

Performance-based compensation practices at Lehman and throughout Wall Street, which pay big bonuses when bankers bet right but only imposes losses on shareholders when they bet wrong, has propagated the kind of toxic financial engineering that caused mortgage-backed securities meltdown, general credit crisis, and the near death experience of many Wall Street banks and securities dealers.

Paying bankers more reasonably is as necessary to restoring the normal operation of credit markets as the general deleveraging Ben Bernanke talks about.

Sadly, Vikram Pandit at Citigroup, John Thane at Merrill Lynch, and others can't let go of the delusion that their 35-year old MBAs are not worth as much as New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter and they in turn are worth multiples of that.

The shareholder value they have destroyed repudiates that conclusion.

Sooner or later after enough dominos fall, compensation structures and business practices will return to more conservative norms of ten and twenty years ago. Only then will the credit crisis resolve and the economy have a decent shot at full recovery.

it's a good thing there are already self-correcting measures in place to offset the widespread damage of this collapse in the financial sector. after all, marami na ring pinagdaanang krisis gaya ng great depression, world war 2, the stock market falls, and 9-11, so in a way the damage will be mitigated. however, the real blow, i must say, is in reviving the confidence of investors and shareholders about the stability of the foundations upon which wall street stands on.
