I know that the Unigames has started in Bacolod and will be ongoing until October 29. It's a bit difficult to find any info or updates regarding the games since it looks like the major dailies do not cover it.

According to Sunstar, there are 38 schools participating in the tourney. FEU is defending champion.

Anbody here who can provide us with any updates? Any noteworthy performances?

Got a text that the Blue Eagles won by 68 pts over Negros Oriental State. Can anyone confirm? Don't have the details.

In their first game (and first victory), Rabeh Al-Husseini scored 31 points.

From visayandailystar:

Blue Eagles claw Stingers;
SFACS nips WNC

Ateneo de Manila University's vaunted frontline and pressure defense proved too much for University of St. La Salle last night as the Blue Eagles came away with a 99-81 win in the men's basketball tournament of the University Games at the USLS Coliseum in Bacolod City.

Although it did not have the same prestige as the De La Salle-Ateneo rivalry, the match was just as entertaining with the Stingers putting up a gallant stand in the first two quarters before wavering in the face of the Eagles' relentless assault in the second half.

Ateneo's veterans JC Intal and Japeth Aguilar teamed up with Paulo Dizon and UAAP rookie of the year Jai Reyes as the Blue Eagles frolicked in the final half to put away the Stingers and nail its second win.

The 6-7 Aguilar punctuated Ateneo's dominance with two slam dunks, one of which came in the first half when he soared over an unsuspecting Alphoe Jareņo for a two-handed rim rattler that had the big crowd roaring.

Nevertheless, La Salle, mentored by Troy Sarabia, refused to lose without a fight, cutting down the Eagles' 25-point lead to 14, 88-74, with 2:36 left as diminutive Norman Jacinto threaded the Ateneo defense to spark the surge that fell short in the end.

The loss dropped USLS to 1-1, while Ateneo upped its record to 2-0 for the solo lead in Bracket D.

In Bracket B, reigning NOPSSCEA champion West Negros College suffered its first setback at the hands of favorite St. Francis of Assisi College System, 54-62, at the Natalio Velez Gym in Silay City.

The Mustangs (2-1) looked poised to pull off an upset, taking a 52-51 lead on Joel Deocadiz's free throws but the many-time UniGames champion Doves went on an 11-2 tear to post its third win in as many games.

The other local team, the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos were playing against defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College as of press deadline. The Rams defeated Ateneo de Davao, 111-71, Sunday.

In the distaff side, UAAP squads Ateneo, Adamson and Far Eastern University and the RP women's team stayed unbeaten with similar convincing victories.

The Lady Eagles clobbered the University of Iloilo, 71-44, while Far Eastern trimmed Silliman University, 62-33. Adamson routed University of San A gustin, 80-62, after the RP Team cruised to a 132-25 win over Holy Angel University. *CPT

Yes, I heard that they're a "guest team" in the tournament or something like that. Some of the champion Ateneo Lady Eagles will reportedly be playing for the Nationals instead of for Ateneo.

From a friend at Lasalle Bacolod:

Cheryl Ngo scored on a drive to the hoop in the last 13 seconds for the winning basket of Ateneo against FEU. FEU fielded its complete UAAP lineup including the athletic triumvirate of Diana Jose, AA Adriano and Ayi Rivera. Ateneo had a mixed UAAP - Team B lineup. UAAP aspirant Lady Eagle Trina Limgenco was scolded at the sidelines often by coach John Flores for ballhogging. Limgenco responded well and helped move the ball around to bring Ateneo back into the thick of the game coming from as much as nine points down at several junctures. Celine Cruz and Ngo were a very potent perimeter combination with their strength, toughness and athleticism.

I heard that both the Lady Eagles and Lady Falcons will play without their Seniors. This match should give us an idea of how the line-up of the two finalists will look for the next season. I know it may be too early to speculate about who will be in their respective rosters but at least, it can give us a clue.

easter
10-28-2005, 02:35 PM
It seems that the Blue Eagles have trouble finishing off tournaments (UAAP, FMC, etc) for almost 2 years now. We start out like a house on fire and then fade away in the home stretch like in the final four. Almost all the tournaments are mirror images of each other on how they finish.

The coaching staff has got to address this pattern.

Gil, lemme answer your query regarding chicken and batchoy in bacolod. The last time Chba-Dude and I were in bacolod, we ate inasal at least once every fucking day. (We stayed there for 2 weeks!)

One "medium-sized" person will normally consume 2 pcs of inasal and 2 cups of garlic rice. One order of paa (thigh & leg) costs 35 pesos and 1 order of pecho (brast & wings) costs 37 pesos. Add 24 pesos for two cups of garlic rice and you have the best meal you could buy for a hundred bucks.

As for batchoy, Ted's Special La Paz Batchoy (from Iloilo actually) offers a lot of batchoy versions but i suggest you try a large bowl of sotanghon or miswa batchoy. Better yet, order both at the same time. Don't forget to order puto to make your meal complete.

Nice. Taking the more scenic route to San Vicente by way of "pa, good food". Baka ma offend sila pag sinabi mong "I smell something fishy". Di bale malamang naka-daan na sila sa Calvary on their way to Sta.

Ateneo avenged its Unigames loss to EAC in an exhibition game last night. The scrore was 86-82. JC Intal was all over the court and was unstoppable at the low post. Ronjay Buenafe of EAC was checked by Ronnie Bughao. The two engaged in an all game round trash talking but exchanged some smiles and friendly taps after the final buzzer. An altercation ensued towards the latter part of the 3rd Q between EAC player # 4 and Doug Kramer. Fortunately though, cooler heads prevailed.

Eric Salamat played for the Eagles and showed some spunk on defense. He had a couple of gutsy drives that caught some fouls from the EAC defenders. He ended up with 3 or 4 pts I think.

The EAC team is a very strong team with very athletic wingmen. They just lack a dominant presence inside.

chba_dude
12-17-2005, 02:10 AM
That Salamat kid is really something.. He was the court general when he ended the long title drought of the San Sebastian Staglets in the NCAA Juniors, over the ever-dominant Red Cubs.. He plays with a lot of spunk on both ends of the court.. He can penetrate and has an above average stroke from long range.. He knows what he can do and sticks to what he can do on the court..

If Ateneo gets to keep him, you just might have insured stability at the point position for the next five years. He can apprentice while Escalona keeps his job this year and Bughao takes over next year.. After that sky's the limit for this kid..

Gil_Andrews
12-17-2005, 08:21 AM
chba,

Actually, I could sense that Salamat is a natural 2. He in fact substituted for Ronnie Bughao. But I also agree with you that he can also be a good combo guard. He reminds me of a small Avenido.
